    Book Description

On the very day after the commutation of the sentence had been announced, Sunday, the 3rd of July, the Queen was again fired at as she sat by the side of her uncle, King Leopold, on her way to the Chapel Royal, St. James's. The pistol missed fire, and the man who presented it, a hunchback, was seized by a boy of sixteen called Dasset. So ridiculous did the group seem, that the very policemen pushed away both captor and captive as actors in a bad practical joke. Then the boy Dasset, who retained the pistol, was in danger of being taken up as the real culprit, trying to throw the blame upon another.

5 out of 5 stars Fred does it once again...5 stars!!!.......2004-09-12

Fred is an icon of the surfing community. His written works are truly memorable and facinating to read. While I know all the breaks he's written about in the surfing portions of his book, I was also in awe about his other exploits in the mountains, etc. My wife was equally enthralled with the book (she, like Fred, is a teacher.) His love of life is genuine and this book is an uplifting piece that everyone should read, whether you surf or not.

5 out of 5 stars moving portrait of a lost land.......2002-10-07

I really liked this book. Van Dyke writes with understated grace and wit, it's a pleasure to read. He describes the days before California became so crowded....it truly was a beautiful place. Still is, but it's nice to read about how it used to be. He is very passionate in his portrayal of the abundance that used to be California. I can't say exactly what about this book made me keep reading, but I didn't put it down until I was done.

5 out of 5 stars A Surfer Who Discovered Life Is More Than A Beach.......2002-02-17

...P>A life is not a novel. So the reader of a memoir can't expect every scene to resolve itself and move the plot forward.
Rather, memoirs tend to be, like history, "one damn thing after another." If a theme emerges, the writer has shown some skill and attained some insight into his or her own life.
Fred Van Dyke, a surfing icon who taught for 30 years at Punahou School, achieves this in his autobiography "Once Upon Abundance, Coming of Age in California and Hawaii" (Anoai Press, paperback, [price]). The reader is pulled forward by the thread that runs from beginning to end.
It is the theme summarized by the title: Van Dyke, who divides his time now between Montana and Hawai'i, has had a life of incredible richness. The California he recalls from a rough-and-ready childhood spent camping, fishing, hiking and roaming the landscape on foot is unimaginable today. The Hawai'i he came to love after he moved here in 1955 is flat out gone. But it is good to read about and imagine these places.
The abundance of pre-freeway California - of space, clean air and water, of fish in the rivers and seals and otters in the sea - is truly a once-upon-a-time fairy tale. Van Dyke's sad visits to childhood haunts, chronicled in the book, are both a lament and a warning: Let's not lose any more of what we've got left of nature.
There is another theme, too: coming of age, both in boyhood and adulthood.
Anyone who picks up this book hoping to read about Van Dyke's glory days as a big-wave rider will be disappointed; he refers only obliquely to that period in the late '50s and '60s, noting that he was so focused on surfing that nothing else much mattered to him. In sharp contrast to the loving detail with which he describes his courtship of his present wife, Joan Marie, whom he married later in life. The entire middle of his life is just ... not there. One can intuit some regrets, and a sense that it was only after he matured that he completed his coming of age, when he began to put people first and surfing second.
Throughout the book, the sheer hardiness of this man is immensely impressive, and not a little intimidating. Growing up, he routinely walked tens of miles just to reach a fishing hole or see a girl he cared about. At one point, he lived on a sand dune in a shack made of driftwood and a discarded hatch cover from a boat. He surfed chilly California waters before wetsuits were widely used, literally turning blue and losing mobility in his limbs because of the cold. He learned to fish, dive, surf and swim by jumping in, shrugging off risk.
In a chapter called "Sharing Camp with Rattlesnakes," he writes matter-of-factly of the summer when his father solved the problem of where the family should live while their new home was being built by sending them to camp in a redwood forest in a tent atop a wooden platform. Few women today would have held out as long as his mother, Billie Van Dyke; it wasn't the rattlesnakes that was the last straw, it was the creaking oak tree that crashed down, just missing their campsite.
Van Dyke's perspective is a long one: Although he rode waves and partied with the children of affluence, the boomer generation, he was shaped by a time before that, when abundance was measured by a different standard. Here, he re-creates that time, shows us how it has affected him, in the process reminding us of what has been lost.

A visually stunning photographic journey chronicling the creation of a Bond movie and the only official companion to the new Bond release in 2002. Award-winning photographer Greg Williams will spend over a year working behind the scenes on the sets of the latest Bond movie, due for release in November 2002. Following the multiple film crews shooting around the world, Williams will record the creation of the film from early production and casting meetings to set building and the day the cameras start rolling through stunt work and special effects to the wrap day. As the only official companion to the twentieth Bond movie, Williams will capture exclusive images of the cast and crew in action and provide a unique insight into the making of a Bond movie. Greg Williams has built up a remarkable portfolio of photography for over 42 films. His last book, On Set, recorded behind the scenes of five years of British filmmaking to include Notting Hill, Bridget Jones's Diary, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Elizabeth.

1 out of 5 stars Bond on Set - Filming Die Another Day.......2005-05-10

I was extremely disappointed in this book. When you get a book that involves the making of a movie, you look for details in set location, make-up, special effects, etc. This book is 95% pictures. I wanted information not pictures. Therefore, this book was a waste of time and money for me. There was a similar book for "Tomorrow Never Dies", but that book described the movie making procewss in detail. That was the way that this one should hav ebnn written.

                        5 out of 5 stars One of a kind!.......2004-06-10

This book is one of my favorite because it has lots of behind the scenes pictures, quotes, pictures of the cast and crew. if your a Bond fan. You gotta have this book!

                        5 out of 5 stars Very good 007 Photographs.......2003-08-06

This is really a very good book. Since I have been watching more of DIE ANOTHER DAY on DVD I have come to love this book. Strange in a way but its reminds me of a visual representation of the Ian Fleming novels. Very good item to have for collectors of James Bond.

                        1 out of 5 stars Rather Disappointing!.......2003-02-17

Some great pictures, I won't deny, but particularly, my expectations were way beyond that what I could get from this book. Most of the pictures are in plain old B&W, instead of being in living colors. The great majority don't even have a subtitle, therefore, we get a little lost sometimes. Besides, as this book was supposed to be something like a filming diary, it could depict much more behind-the-scenes stills, making of candids and so on, and even could show some text in it. I think if you only like to see pictures then the book will be ok, but if you're a die hard fan, searching for news about the filming of the picture, then this book will be the wrong choice. I think maybe to those photo admirers the book will be a disappointing, so, I wouldn't recommed it at all. I am quite disappointed myself!

5 out of 5 stars Filled and Thrilled with pictures of Die Another Day.......2003-01-21

Bond on Set: Fiiming Die Another Day is perhaps one of the most unique 007 books on the movie ever. When you open it up don't expect to see text. This book is filled over the top with behind the scenes pictures of the cast and crew. Greg Williams does an absolutely fantastic job of showing off the film. Pictures include Rosamund Pike in her fencing suit, Michael G. Wilson in his cameo, Pierce Brosnan, Halle Berry, Rick Yune, Toby Stephens and many more. From the forward by Michael G. Wilson to the end of hundreds of pictures, this book is a treasure to all Bond fans!

The number one New York Times bestselling author of Bias delivers another bombshell—this time aimed at . . .

100 People Who Are Screwing Up America

No preaching. No pontificating. Just some uncommon sense about the things that have made this country great—and the culprits who are screwing it up.

Bernard Goldberg takes dead aim at the America Bashers (the cultural elites who look down their snobby noses at "ordinary" Americans) . . . the Hollywood Blowhards (incredibly ditzy celebrities who think they're smart just because they're famous) . . . the TV Schlockmeisters (including the one whose show has been compared to a churning mass of maggots devouring rotten meat) . . . the Intellectual Thugs (bigwigs at some of our best colleges, whose views run the gamut from left wing to far left wing) . . . and many more.

Goldberg names names, counting down the villains in his rogues' gallery from 100 all the way to 1—and, yes, you-know-who is number 37. Some supposedly "serious" journalists also made the list, including the journalist-diva who sold out her integrity and hosted one of the dumbest hours in the history of network television news. And there are those famous miscreants who have made America a nastier place than it ought to be—a far more selfish, vulgar, and cynical place.

But Goldberg doesn't just round up the usual suspects we have come to know and detest. He also exposes some of the people who operate away from the limelight but still manage to pull a lot of strings and do all sorts of harm to our culture. Most of all, 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America is about a country where as long as anything goes, as one of the good guys in the book puts it, sooner or later everything will go.

This is serious stuff for sure. But Goldberg will also make you laugh as he harpoons scoundrels like the congresswoman who thinks there aren't enough hurricanes named after black people, and the environmentalist to the stars who yells at total strangers driving SUVs—even though she tools around the country in a gas-guzzling private jet.

With Bias, Bernard Goldberg took us behind the scenes and exposed the way Big Journalism distorts the news. Now he has written a book that goes even further. This time he casts his eye on American culture at large—and the result is a book that is sure to become the voice of all those Americans who feel that no one is speaking for them on perhaps the most vital issue of all: the kind of country in which we want to live.

Bernie Goldberg is by far one of the best political analysts in the Business. Honest and fair. Audiobook even better to hear him.

5 out of 5 stars The Truth Hurts.......2007-08-29

Humorous, clever, insightful, painful at times, it's a valuable commentary from the kid from the Bronx.

                            2 out of 5 stars Don't hate me because I'm a democrat!.......2007-08-07

On my list of 100 things screwing up America, #1 would be the narrow-minded comments that liberals and conservatives alike will make, and more alarmingly -- believe, about other human souls.

Here's a quote from another review posted on this site - about this book.

" There is little decency left in this world due to the people he talks about in this book."

Given that this book (and please don't be fooled into thinking otherwise) is an unobjective look at liberals, that comment is so alarming to me.

I don't disagree that many of the people and their words or actions cited in the book are "screwed up." Does that make the other ?? millions of liberals equally detestable? If the book would have talked about 100 idiots (equal opportunity political parties represented) that comment would be benign. But as the book makes no effort to answer it's title question objectively, it's credibility is lacking to say the least -- and it makes that comment an over-reaching comment to all liberals, and it's offensive. Not just to me, but to any sensible person.

A mildly amusing rant for the right, the book may be... but that quote demonstrates something really completely "screwed" up with many people. We need to think for ourselves, and have a little respect for mankind.

Full disclosure -- yes, I am a democrat and I spent my own hard earned money for this book (gasp) I was fairly certain it would be a one-sided rant, but I like to read all types of authors, consider other points of view... you get the picture. (I dare one of you on the right... to read one of Al Franken's book... or to go see "An Inconvenient Truth.")

Don't get me wrong... I don't mind a rant... even one-sided rants (because I think I'm smart enough to pick out the nonsense and it's interesting to hear them once in a while -- on either side of the fence.)

What an excellent concept for a book. How interesting and utterly smart it would have been if it were presented in a non-partisan manner. Come on..... we can't really believe that 50% of the population really make up 100% of the reasons America is screwed up. It's irresponsible. Don't we all know, love and respect friends, family, and neighbors who are on all sides of the political spectrum?) Sadly, the author is either that narrow-minded -- or he believed this would sell more books. (I think it's the latter to be honest with you. While he doesn't have a moments hesitation to dish up a one-sided rant - he obviously knows it's one-sided... but it's his side so --- who cares right?)

Sensible, objective, lover of mankind. (Even conservatives... except... I must admit... Ann Coulter:-) But then she would expect nothing less.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting but closed-minded.......2007-07-27

I consider myself a conservative, so in many ways I agree with Goldberg's list of mostly-liberal individuals who are screwing up America by promoting a morally relative world-view rejecting all traditional value systems and by embracing their own hypocritical, extremist version of what they call "diversity." However, instead of presenting well-researched and well-reasoned arguments, Goldberg pulls the common-sense card and expects readers to see the names on the list, roll their eyes at the hapless politicans/celebrities/intellectuals, and accept that they are responsible for the crumbling of America because it's soooo obvious. This shows that Goldberg is writing not to persuade but to make some cracks at those who have different views than him and pat his fellow conservatives on the back. The book has the potential to be thought-provoking reading if it utilized facts rather than obviously out-of-context quotes and anecdotes to assail the listed and garner cheap laughs.

What is more, Goldberg completely disregards feminists as "crazies" and essentially denies that domestic violence is a HUGE problem in the united states today. On the contrary, I would argue that the indifferent attitudes toward domestic violence and those who express them are more detrimental to America than some of the feminists out there. And calling any group of people names is no way to work towards positive change, anyway. When will feminists on-the-fringe and dear Goldberg realize that, rather than isolating insults lobbed at opponents, balance and true open-mindedness and a seeking of middle-ground is the key to everything?

Ultimtely the book was mean-spirited and poorly researched, despite its glimmers of humor and sense. There have to be better conservative writers out there, or America really is going to have problems.

4 out of 5 stars Bush should have been included!.......2007-07-26

The book starts with the Hiltons, and of course, the most notorious of them all, Paris! Paris is known worldwide, gaining a wide audience from both youngsters and adults. Shout the name Paris Hilton in the streets of say, Zanzibar or Timbuktu, and you will be instantly rewarded with facial expressions of instant recognition from the crowd. But why, and most importantly, how has she become a household name? Is it her home made porn movie seen by millions in the internet? But is she really screwing up America, or herself? Or is she entertaining America and just screwing around?

The author explores many other characters he feels are screwing up America. Some you might have never heard of. It would have been nice to include pictures of each person. Sometimes the name might not be recognizable but the face always is.

Two of his characters get little words to describe them: Courtney Love (# 95), gets two letters: Ho; and Michael Jackson (# 90) gets the following sentence: "If I have to explain it to you, you shouldn't be reading this book!" Amazingly, Jimmy Carter is ranked at number 6! And who gets the number one rank? You probably haven't guessed it: Michael Moore. And he gets a full page picture of himself too (the only one with a picture), and just the following quote: "They are possibly the dumbest people on this planet..." Moore is speaking of his fellow Americans.

Honestly, I am surprised he did not include President Bush Junior in his list. According to Europeans and probably the rest of the world, President Bush screwed up the image of America big time!!!!
I could not stop laughing. Was this book meant to be a serious work or comic, or both? I loved the exchange between Goldberg and Al Franken. It was just hilarious.

If you want to laugh out loud then pick up this book! If you are a believer in let bygones be bygones, then better not to read this book.

                                            Book Description

In today's changing political and economic environment, it is increasingly important that companies learn to properly use various trading instruments to protect themselves against price volatility. Since the first successful energy futures contract was introduced almost a quarter century ago, trading in energy futures and options has played an important role in hedging against fluctuations in the price of petroleum products, crude oil, natural gas, propane, electricity, and most recently, coal.

In this 2nd edition of their best-selling primer, authors Steven Errera and Stewart L. Brown explain how exchange traded futures and options markets work, and how companies can successfully use the markets in their overall strategy to increase profitability. They cover everything from market mechanics, hedging, spread trading, and technical trading to the history and growth of the markets. Also included in an extensive appendix detailing contract specifications for thirteen energy futures/options contracts.

                                            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great book if you know nothing about futures, skip if otherwise.......2007-03-26

This is a great book. It's well written and easy to read. However, there is very little here in terms of specifics to energy per se. The book spends a lot of time describing basic futures and options concepts. Still, if you're new to finance and want an introduction to the energy markets, this book is for you. Especially valuable was the appendix at the end of the book which summarizes various popular different energy future contracts.

                                            4 out of 5 stars Well Written.......2003-10-03

The concepts and trading strategies of futures and options are well explained in plain English. Unfortunately, the author only scatterly discussed some characteristics of the energy industry. To be a successful trader in the energy futures market, you must be an expert in the industry first. However, this might be beyond the scope of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Primer.......2003-06-28

This is an excellent and invaluable learning tool. It is helpful to have some financial experience, namely understanding some of the terms like call and put, etc, so that you may spend more time focusing on the concepts, but not absolutely necessary.
The book is logically organized to start with an overview of the futures market, followed by an overview of futures, generalized hedging, and options. All topics are related to energy commodities with easy to understand explanations. Relevant details relating to the energy market (definitions of spark spreads, inter-exchange hedging strategies, etc) are included.
Although I could not go into the market and trade commodities after reading this book, I could understand the overall concept of hedging energy futures and options and this serves as an excellent primer to the next level.
I would say that this book is at about the college senior level, easy on the math and not heavy on modeling. I would recommend it for the beginning MBA student but not at a PHD level.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding material on trading energy futures and options.......2002-01-04

Thanks to the authors for presenting this information in language that is understandable to the masses. You have demystified a topic that is often encrypted.

Many people in the energy business would benefit greatly in their overall understanding by reading this book! It is well-organized and makes the complex business of hedging futures contracts seem logical.

I have worked with wholesale energy traders and seen the trading floor with it's live weather maps, analytical systems, and 100 or so traders and I thought it was an exciting environment. Understanding P/(L) positions, mark to market, and familiarizing with the multitude of hedging strategies has made this intriguing business all the more interesting to me.

The book delivers exactly what its title implies. Thank you, again!

The Fundamentals of Trading Energy Futures & Options was one the best business books I've read. It was easy to read and understand. The book is well written and earned its cost in my first hour of trading. I highly recommend this book.
