Book Description
Newly reissued, Lord of Arabia is the famous biography of Ibn Saud, King of Saudi Arabia, who continues to cast a shadow over the Middle East. In this important study, the author reveals many of the family traditions and deeply-held principles that form the unwritten foundation of present-day Saudi Arabia and its neighbors. Despite the lack of documentary information available on Ibn Saud, the book ably recreates the king's life through key principle first-hand authorities.
Lord of Arabia not only tracks the life of this extraordinary man, but also gives rare insights into both past and present Middle Eastern conditions and its culture.

Book Description
Once known as the "Harry Truman of hockey" (San Jose Mercury News) for his bluntness and humor, coach Darryl Sutter gave up the sport from 1995 to 1997 to care for his son Christopher, who was born with Down's Syndrome. Brimming with anecdotes from on and off the ice, this book gives a close-up view of both sides of Sutter - the tough guy and the activist who started a foundation to raise money for nonprofit organizations.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for all hockey fans.......2006-02-10
While not as full of exciting hockey action as Six Shooters, this is a very well-presented story of the man behind the coach - what are the driving forces behind the way he thinks and acts? I wasn't aware that he has a son with Down's Syndrome, and it was very interesting the way Darryl relates the experience of watching his son struggle to conquer skills we-all take for granted to not tolerating players who aren't using their God-given talents to the best of their ability. The emphasis on strong work-ethic is very refreshing in this era of convenience where somehow we have come away from giving all we have to everything we attempt and instead settle for taking the easy way out. There are powerful lessons in this story that non-hockey players can apply to their personal lives and use to steer their attitudes and intentions regarding whatever they are doing in a more positive and productive manner. The quotes and Darryl-isms were probably my favorite part of the book!
Quick-Wit and a great sense of humor!.......1999-05-22
Coach Sutter has turned our hockey club around. We can be proud of our team and we can look forward to each and every game because no matter what our record is and no matter how we fared the game before, we know coach Sutter is going to get the Sharks up for the next contest. I never really knew what kind of a person he was until I read this book. His quick-wit has a unique blend of honesty, puncuality and humor in it that is hard to find elsewhere in pro sports. It's a great read for hockey fans and sports fans alike. I only have one suggestion: E.C.McEnery needs to continue his book writing ways with a new book on Sharks Fans and how we're the best in the league. And don't you forget it!
A rare look at a fascinating individual.......1999-02-20
This book is a "must read" for hockey fans, as well as fans of a fascinating human interest story. E.C. McEnery does an outstanding job of profiling San Jose Sharks head coach Darryl Sutter, not only as a player and a coach, but more importantly as a husband and a father. Darryl's life as a player and coach are remarkable and McEnery did a great job of recapping his professional history. But what makes this book truly unique is how he was able to show a side of Darryl that most people are not familiar with - Darryl as a family man. Darryl's quotes over the years have been witty and meaningful. However, the most important thing that you'll pick-up from this book is that what you're gonna get from Darryl is the truth.

Tick tock goes the clock..........2003-08-02
London is a fascinating place. By day it is a centre of culture and economy, government and teeming humanity. Even well into the evening, the city does not stop -- the government is used to meeting well into the night (there is a light at the top of the Big Ben Clock Tower signifying that the House of Commons is still sitting; often this light burns until nearing midnight), and the theatre and restaurant districts continue bustling well into the darker hours.
However, after midnight, the city begins to slow. Public transport stops, the pubs have closed, and decent folk have returned to their flats, terraced housing, or outlying homes. This is London After Midnight -- a place for the less reputable folk, the criminals and the cads. Many is the author who has used this rich resource as the seedbed for their stories. Peter Haining has compiled a nice collection of stories that show the darker side of London, by giving a literary tour of its criminal haunts.
Haining has arranged these stories, recent and older, into two broad categories -- Black Spots and City Sleuths. In the category of Black Spots, Haining has selected stories from such notable mystery authors as P.D. James and Graham Greene. London being the international city that it is, one also finds the likes of Fu Manchu in Limehouse. This section concludes with the ironically entitled, 'People Don't Do Such Things' by Ruth Rendell; alas, people do.
Under City Sleuths, no collection of London detectives could be complete, or even seriously considered, without the great Sherlock Holmes by Conan-Doyle. Joining him are the creations of authors such as Dorothy Sayers and Agatha Christie. Searching for the great and the overlooked, these detectives have set a standard that goes beyond the literary -- Holmes, for example, is required reading by the detective forces of many nations. Agatha Christie is perhaps the most translated female author of all time.
One of the things that makes this literary tour so compelling is the element that makes many of the typical (and not-so-typical) British mysteries a delight -- they take place most often in real places. Sherlock Holmes' flat at 221b Baker Street might not be there, but Baker Street surely is. Hercule Poirot's Park Lane, Peter Wimsey's Piccadilly, and John Thorndyke's Temple legal haunts are all real, and can be visited on tour in London. In fact, Haining says in the introduction that it was on such a tour that the inspiration for this arose.
There are twenty-two stories here, all in short-story format that can be easily read in one sitting; some may be unnerving, as crime, even proper English crime in London, can sometimes be a grisly affair. But those who love a good mystery, it doesn't get better than this.
A Killing Spree.......2003-02-26
London After Midnight is great it has some really gorey parts and is extremely intense, it brings the deadly murders to life and will haunt you in your dreams. If you haven't got it yet then you should quickly run to your nearest bookstore and buy one, and it's worth every penny but be carful i'm serious in some parts i would say it would not be okay for children.

A monumental under-taking to film & Chaney fan delight.......2001-06-26
This is a must have for Chaney & Horror film fans! This undertaking must have been a ton of work & a ton of hours to put together but it is a perfect reconstruction of a film that to this date has not surfaced & its only copy may have perished in MGM's vault 7 fire. You also must also acquire a copy of The Marie Collidge-Rask novel (long out of print). Together they make the experiance as close to seeing the film as you & I may ever find.
An exquisite reconstruction.......2000-04-04
Neither Phillip J. Riley nor anyone else has ever found a copy of the legendary lost Lon Chaney reputed masterpiece, London After Midnight. But Riley found the hat Chaney wore, and enough stills to make the lost film come alive.

Dances not Dirges: Culture under Apartheid.......1997-04-02
In 1986, Paul Simon's album, "Graceland" focused international attention on the music and people of South Africa. The music was not the mournful dirges of apartheid
victims but rather the vibrant sounds of a cultural affirmation. Anyone interested the people and culture
behind the "Graceland" sound need look no further than David Coplan's "In Township Tonight!"
Those who might shy away from an academic work, for fear of encountering dry-as-sawdust pedantic prose, will be pleasantly surprised. Coplan's writing is clear and unencumbered. Coplan provides a brief survey of the dynamics of Black South African culture in the nineteenth century. This serves a backdrop to the book's primary focus, Black music and culture in urban South Africa during the twentieth
century.
Coplan's account is intersting and exciting, sad yet homorous. Through rigorous research and passion for his subject Coplan provides the reader with a compelling look at one of the most unusual societies of the twentieth century, apartheid South Africa. The reader is taken beyond the simplistic South Africa of media sound bites to a world of complex characters where music is part of life and where, in the background one hears the irrepresible peep of a penny whistle.

Customer Reviews:
Dry - and I'm not talking lane conditions.......2001-05-20
I agree with one of the reviews that I read here about this book. BORING. Unless you are a robot, do not buy this book. I like lots of detail on the mechanics and science behind the game with illustrations. The book accomplishes this on some fronts by showing the 3021 technique and some other useful tips, but it fails in not showing others. It does not delve enough into the hook release and shooting at strikes + lane conditions.
This book does have a lot of illustrations and it does give you the basics, however, this book focuses mostly on bowling drills.
Bowling Steps to success.......2000-03-24
I loved it I love bowling. I love getting turkeys every time I bowl. I've not missed an turkeys since I read this book it's my lucky charm and I carry it in my bowling bag.
Review of Bowling: Steps to Success by Robert Strickland.......2000-03-17
Robert Strickland's book is a great book for the individual wanting to understand the mechanics and technique needed for building a solid bowling swing. There are step-by-step drills provided, along with success tests for each drill. Having bowled with a poor technique for years, this book helped me to see how much I was doing incorrectly, and why my scoring was so inconsistent. I have applied many of the principles Strickland outlines to my own bowling technique, such as using a four-step delivery, as well as the timing of each arm motion with the feet in the swing, and have found greater success and consistency in hitting my mark on the lane. While variances will inevitably occur with each bowler (for example, I need to start with my knees bent more deeply, as I tend to lift my shoulders and drop the ball at the line, whereas Strickland recommends a more upright "snooty" posture at the outset of the swing), it is a good book to "review the basics" and check your own technique against.
A good all-round book..........2000-02-03
Bob Strickland uses all his experience to write an excellent book covering all aspects of tenpin bowling. Bowling is an extremely difficult sport to master, but Strickland takes the difficult areas (and the easier parts) and makes them easier to understand. In no other book have I seen so much detail given to areas such as the delivery, the release, the psychology, and the all-out approach to the game. However, if there was one diasdvantage to this book, it would have to be the immense amount of training drills that it contains. They may be useful for some, but many involve the use of other knowledgable bowlers, or a long bowling session, or the need to bowl in a league. I actually think that some of them should be omitted from the book, and a bit more information about the technicalities of the game included. However, I would recommend this book to anyone looking more seriously into bowling. I would then recommend looking at "From Gutterballs to Strikes", by Mike Durbin, just to add a little bit more zip to your game.
do not buy this.......1999-12-26
i ordered many books on bowling off amazon.com for christmas and this book was horrible compared to the others. if its help with bowling your looking fo, do not buy this. i didnt like the way it was put together at all and was very boring. definitely go par bowling by tom kouros, that book was best!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!.......2005-06-09
This book can be finished in a day! I simply couldn't put it down. It's written as a story so you get quickly pulled into the storyline to find out the end. Although, you already know the ending...Starbucks is one of the most admired brands and successful companies ever known.
So how did they do it? This book answers this question and more. What I enjoyed about the book is that it opened the door to the heart and soul of Starbucks to reveal their evolution and foundation. As I prepare my business plan, this book has been more helpful to me than typical business plan books. A lot of times those books provide heartless examples of companies. Sure you've got a great idea for a product or service, but how do you translate that into a brand? What is in the best interest for your customer? After all, Starbucks just sells coffee and coffee related products - nothing extravagant alone, but the mystical & romantic experience surrounding their coffee is a distinctive brand that is difficult to match.
This book answers the Who? Where? When? Why? How? of the Starbucks development - their trials, errors and commitment to their beliefs. The concepts discussed in the book are things that I feel touch every business, yet this book provides consistent examples of how to address them.
Concepts such as:-
-Growth & development
-Branding
-Why you don't have to franchise to be successful brand
-Rewarding customers by first rewarding employees ("partners") and suppliers
-Turning down profitable alternatives if it sacrifices the customer's overall experience or a partner's view of the company
I must admit I have not read "Pour your heart into it" so I can't comment on any similarities/differences between the two books. What I can say is that if you are interested in creating a world-class company and want to learn how to infuse your company with a soul (rather than focusing on your product development) to ensure success, then this is your book!
