Palmerston, he evoked an era of gunboat diplomacy. WHy? Because he understood the British empire rested on its ability to deter aggression and his gutsy vindictive nature of sending the royal navy anywhere it took to protect the honor of England. With the exception of churchill, Palmerston was a great defender of empire, uniquly british. THis is a must read for anyone wanting to understand how America should be acting in the face of terror. Palmerston was the ultimate pre-emptionist.

        Book Description

In the late 18th and 19th centuries English dioceses were large and bishops few. Most, aristocratic high churchmen, many from academia, were rarely seen in their dioceses and had little connection to the problems of industrial society. Only when Palmerston became Prime Minister in 1855 was there observable widespread reform. When he died more than half the bishops were his appointees. Most had achieved academic distinction but they also came to office with a wealth of parochial experience. This book examines the far-reaching reforms brought about in the English episcopate by these 'Good and Proper Men'.

                    Book Description

After the New York Rangers missed the NHL playoffs for the third consecutive season in `99-2000, big changes were in the air at Madison Square Garden. Glen Sather was hired as team president/general manager, and he named Ron Low coach and brought back Mark Messier, the captain of the Rangers` 1995 Stanley Cup championship team. In Nightmare on 33rd Street: A Long Season With The New York Rangers, veteran hockey beat writer Rick Carpiniello takes a day-by-day, game-by-game journey with a team in transition.

From the preseason to the season`s bitter end and the important off-season dealings, Carpiniello brings hockey fans inside the locker rooms and boardrooms and onto the ice with a team struggling to regain its winning form. Sather, the architect of championship clubs in Edmonton, discovers that running a team in the big city is a different story. In trying to find the right mix of talent, players are traded or sent to the minors while others are brought to the big club in their places. Constant trade rumors and turmoil sweep through the locker room. Key Ranger players, including goalie Mike Richter, fall victim to injury. Coach Low juggles the ever-changing roster, while captain Messier, now 40 years old, attempts to rally the troops.

Nightmare on 33rd street is an inside look at the tumultuous New York Rangers` 2000-01 season by a seasoned observer of the hockey scene.

2 out of 5 stars Where did I hear that before?.......2003-08-09

As with the 2 previous reviews, I agree that alot of the book was repetitive. The book also lacked flow. There were spots that he should have given more details but didn't. There were some interesting notes as to why players were not taken to task. However, I found myself looking for more....but it just wasn't there.

2 out of 5 stars Over and Over and Over.......2003-02-13

As a Rangers fan, I expected at minimum an interesting read. But what I got is a poorly written piece of tripe. Talk about repetitive: In one instance the writer, Rick Carpiniello, quotes three players--back-to-back-to-back--who essentially say the same thing.
This book sorely needs an editor. Long rambling quotes permeate, while there isn't nearly enough analysis. The writer also has a penchant for doing things like saying the Rangers poor play is not acceptable. He follows by quoting Theo Fluery who says "No, it's not acceptable," and Mark Messier, who says "Losing isn't something we can easily accept." NO KIDDING.
It's a difficult read and way too repetitive. Did I mention it repeats itself--over and over? I ended up skipping paragraphs at a time. I don't know how this guy made it out of J-School.

3 out of 5 stars Get in the corners, Carp!.......2002-01-22

While this book did confirm some of my worst suspicions (GM Mark Messier and Muckler's uh, style), I found that after awhile, it read like a gigantic newspaper article, with re-hashing of stats and scores (They were 1-8-1, with 30 shots...yadayadayada). I even recognized some of the quotes from the papers. It seemed that Carpiniello wanted and tried to be honest, but since I suppose he's still working around these guys, he can't get too opinionated. For instance, he would recall an intriguing incident or remark, then leave it alone. I would have preferred to hear his personal opinions of why Muckler did or said 'such and such.' Here and there, he might insert a little bit of what he thinks, he does get on Sather a little bit, but I'd prefer if he had just let it fly.

"What most distinguished these paperbacks wasn't their narratives but their frequently amazing covers, swashes of erotic eye-candy that, as surely as a Warhol soupcan, now define an era. And so the emphasis in this first-rate celebration is on the covers, with hundreds reproduced in what looks like accurate (i.e., soul-shocking) color."-Publishers Weekly

Campy, trashy, bad, tacky, sleazy... this should appeal to anyone that loves John Waters movies or similar cultural underbelly fare. A big, thick book of fun NOT for the entire family. The text is as interestingly funny as the covers. Sure, it's sexist in the extreme, but we just didn't know better back then, now did we? This totally appeals to the sense of iconic, nostalgic and retro sex and anyone that still thinks "the jerk" is a still cool dance to do and girlwatcher sunglasses are de riguer will love this book. I've bought it for 2 people so far and they can't keep their friends hands off of them... a great FUN gift idea that keeps on giving and making you laugh out loud with every page turn.

4 out of 5 stars Sleaze by the million.......2005-05-15

It soon becomes apparent when reading the first few chapters of this interesting book that in this tiny part of the publishing industry were an equally small number of people (mostly males, obviously) yet they were responsible for producing millions of trash paperbacks that sold in the Fifties, Sixties and early Seventies. This book is a celebration of their endeavours.

Because of the very competitive arena in which these publishers worked, with twenty or more new titles each month the covers were the main selling point and the three hundred plus reproduced in this book show that you don't mess with a successful formulae. They had to show a female (unless it was for the gay market) as provocatively posed as possible with a two or three word title to complete the package. It has to be said though that the quality of these illustrations is pretty poor which only makes the work of one or two artists really stand out. Robert Bonfils, in particular, consistently turned out quality art and sleaze artists like Stanton, Bilbrew and Bill Ward were made for this market. No cover design could be too tacky for this publishing genre.

The bulk of the book are the cover reproductions (each with date, publisher, author and artist credits) with several short essays in the front. The two about soft core publishing on the East and West coasts were interesting because they actually explain the background to the publishers and more importantly how the books were distributed through the network of adult book stores in most cities and towns. The back has a useful list of publishers and authors pseudonyms. I was slightly disappointed with the books production though, there is no real page design, paragraphs are excessively long and columns just fall short because no one bothered to make adjustments to the picture sizes to compensate. Despite this 'Sin-a-rama' will probably be the only book to comprehensively cover the publishing world of paperback sleaze.

5 out of 5 stars An eye-opening visual survey .......2005-02-05

Sin-A-Rama: Sleaze Sex Paperbacks of the Sixties is a full-color gallery of paperback cover artwork from "sleazy" sex-themed paperback books of the 1960's. An introduction surveys the industry and history behind such publications, but most of the text within Sin-A-Rama consists of excerpts from the paperbacks themselves. The covers, done in the realism style with muted shades so common in the 60's, are often quite revealing; bare breasts and nipples are not uncommon, as are a number of kinky, if exaggerated situations. An eye-opening visual survey of the sensuality marketed to popular American culture during the era of the sexual revolution.

5 out of 5 stars Great historical & pictorial depiction of sleaze paperbacks!.......2005-01-21

Sin-A-Rama is the only book on this subject on the market today. Sure, there have been plenty of books discussing the 1940's/1950's pulp paperbacks (sci fi, mystery, etc titles) but this is the only one thus far to delve into the realm of the taboo world of 1960's sleaze paperbacks! The editors do a wonderful job constructing the historical basis for these lurid gems, while also providing the reader with pages and pages of full-color pictures of these naughty novels. The book features great articles by Jay A. Gertzman, Brittany A. Daley, Earl Kemp, and Steve Gertz to name a few. Furthermore, the book features excellent reference material at the back including lists of pen names by Earl Kemp and a publisher's catalog by Brittany A. Daley. The book is also littered with interesting quotes from these rule-breaking books. I would highly advise readers to seek out this book! Oh and I don't know if Amazon.com's personnel ever reads these reviews but there is an error on this book's order page. The editor list is incorrect as the editors were actually (as listed on the back of the book): Brittany A. Daley, Hedi El Kholti, Earl Kemp, Miriam Linna, and Adam Parfrey.

                        Book Description

"The challenge of putting together a television show for the first time was especially intimidating because of the traditions and the expectations for Star Trek®."

-- Michael Piller, co-creator, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

It might be hard to believe, but there was a time when launching a new Star Trek series was considered a risky venture. Maybe it was just luck that Star Trek: The Next Generation® had succeeded. Could another show capture the imagination of the viewers?

The creators of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine® built a cast of characters totally different from the more comfortable, familiar ones that had been seen on previous incarnations of Star Trek. One of the writers observed, "You can see right away they're not perfectly engineered humans....They seem more real....They represent a different way to tell a story." The setting for the show was a space station, a dark, almost sinister, alien place -- the diametrical opposite of a bright reassuring starship. This new Star Trek series set every expectation on its head -- and it succeeded. Deep Space Nine created some of the most visionary, emotionally charged and critically acclaimed hours of television ever made, and at the end of seven years it could boast of ranking at the top of the syndicated ratings year after year.

The Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion is the official guide to all 176 spectacular episodes of this revolutionary series. Detailed synopses, behind-the-scenes information, and in-depth interviews with the cast and crew are provided for each show. Hundreds of photographs and illustrations -- many never before seen -- fill the pages of this book. For the casual reader or the fan who wants to know more, this is the definitive book on this groundbreaking series. From its explosive beginning to the heartrending conclusion, relive it all and see why TV Guide called it "the best acted, written, produced, and altogether finest...Star Trek series."

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible tome; the gold standard for episode guides.......2007-09-05

I'll just add to the heaps of praise for this massive work covering the complete Deep Space Nine series. The plot of every episode is described in detail, as one would expect, but this volume goes much further, devoting a great deal of text on each episode and season, primarily offering points of view from the writers, story editors, producers, directors, and other production staff, and occasionally from the actors. What's especially great, aside from all the detail that fans salivate over, is that everyone involved with the production is generally pretty candid about what does and doesn't work, so the less-inpsired episodes aren't subjected to faux praise for the sake of selling DVDs.

It's not flawless, however. Too much detail is sometimes given about how a story evolved into what finally aired, whereas there are often other questions about plot and character development, or lack thereof, that would've been more compelling to read. Also, there are spoilers in some of the behind-the-scenes info that could've been better disguised; it makes it difficult to share the book with someone who is watching the series for the first time. Those are small nits to pick, though. No other Trek episode guide comes anywhere near the level of depth and quality of this one, and I can't recommend it highly enough to fans of the series, even those who don't consider DS9 their favorite part of the ST franchise.

Love this in my Star Trek collection. Helps you to remember all of the great episodes of this series.

5 out of 5 stars The companion book I compare all other comapnion books to........2007-05-10

This book really set the standard for me for what a companion book for a TV show should be. A nice essay on the shows creation, lenghy season overviews, detailed synopsis' for each episode, and at least a couple pages (note these are big pages) of behind the scenes information on every single episode. With all due respect to a previous reviewer I don't understand how one could say there isn't enough behind the scenes information. This book is basically everything you could ever want to know about the TV show Star Trek Deep Space Nine. I now only buy companion books that follow a similar format. For anyone who likes DS9 this is the book to own.

5 out of 5 stars Embrace Your Inner Geek.......2007-03-25

This book is just too good for words - I actually was a little stunned to see it existed, and when I received it, I could not have been more pleased with the content. In-depth articles on each episode, illustrated by nice B&W photos and great interviews with cast and crew up and down the list.

Definitely NOT for the casual fan, but for those rare DS9 fans among the Trek fan base, this is the one.

Also, for those of you who enjoy the current "Galactica" series, this is a good window into how Ron Moore learned to write serialized, relevant sci-fi. If anything, this show is superior in many ways to "Galactica," if only by allowing a few rays of light to shine through the perpetual gloom.

Only complaint, and a very minor one: no interviews with either Marc Alaimo (Gul Dukat, nose-to-nose the best villain in Trek, along with Khan and Q) or Cirroc Lofton.

3 out of 5 stars Some interesting stuff, though not enough.......2005-07-07

Some of the information is interesting, though I do have to admit that I was somewhat let down by it. I thought there would be more "insider information," so to speak, than there was. All the technical info was great, but I was hoping for more personal information, more about inside jokes/behind the scenes/etc. The sections that begin each season are a bit better in this respect though. After one read through of each episode, though, the book's primary use now is just to remind me what each episode is about so I can decide whether to watch it on DVD for the 6th time, or skip to the next episode. Not exactly the central use I had in mind when I bought it.

I am very disappointed in this book. I was looking for leadership games to share with my management class. Of the 50 games listed, only about 10 deal directly with leadership skills and traits. The rest are general ice-breakers, productivity boosters, and team-building games. And, in my opinion, none of the games are worth more than what you can find for free on the internet. For instance, one game encourages you to develop a slide presentation of photos and ask your group about first impressions of people. It is a good idea for a quick game but the book doesn't provide any photos. It took about 45 minutes to read the entire 160 page book. So, if you can pick up a used copy of this book for a couple of bucks, you may find a few useful ideas that you can adapt to your own work.
