Richelieu and Olivares (Canto original series)
ASIN: 0719069807 |
Book Description
This is the first scholarly study of the political and economic relationship between Louis XIV and the parlements of France, the Parlement of Paris and all the provincial tribunals. The author explains how the king managed to impose strict political discipline for which this reign, and only this reign, is known. Hurt shows that the king built upon that discipline to extract large sums of money from the judges in the parlements, thus damaging their economic interests. When the king died in 1715, the regent, Philippe d'Orléans, after a brief attempt to befriend the parlements through compromise, resorted to the authoritarian methods of Louis XIV and perpetuated the Sun King's political and economic legacy. This study calls into question current revisionist understanding of Louis XIV and insists that absolute government had a harsh reality at its core. Based upon extensive archival research, this remarkable book will be of interest to all students of the history of early modern France and the monarchies of Europe.

Book Description
A grippingly honest account of how one man succeeded in filling the emptiness at the core of his soul. --RABBI HAROLD S. KUSHNER, author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People One of the most important memoirs of the spirit I've ever read. --BILL MOYERS
Customer Reviews:
An Exercise in Moderation.......2002-06-27
Spiritual memoirs tend to follow the same plot line. It's the boy meets girl story with God substituted for the girl. There's nothing wrong with the formula, the author's job is to make it fresh and interesting. Dan Wakefield doesn't get the job done. The structure of "Returning" is linear, the pace is ponderous, and the insights only moderately interesting. In fact, the entire book is an exercise in moderation, written by a moderate talent, who, on the evidence presented, has lived a moderate life. It's no wonder Bill Moyer's, a paragon of moderation, liked this book. There are parts of this book where the author could have revealed more. The account of his nervous breakdown is scary, but all too brief, and on too many occasions - bouts of adolescent [activity], unsuccessful psychoanalysis, addiction to alcohol - Mr. Wakefield seems like a kid in a confessional. He rushes through his sins in order to be unburdened, but also undiscovered. It doesn't work. If we give the penitent the benefit of our attention, he should give us the benefit of a compelling story.
Spiritual comet.......1997-04-22
I started reading this book while Comet Hale-Bopp was at its brightest. I quickly came to understand that journalist/novelist Dan Wakefield's journey was the spiritual version of a comet. He begins with a fairly typical midwest Christianity, then moves to agnosticism, then moves to atheism, then moves to attending a Unitarian church, within which he moves back into Christianity.
His journey, like that of a comet, took him far from his home, his roots, his faith, his God, to the cold and darkness that filled his life. But when the return journey began, like a comet, his life grew brighter as he came nearer to the faith that he found to be the center of his journey.
As he looks back, Dan Wakefield sees the ways that God has been with him throughout the long journey. Like the gravity that calls a distant comet to make its journey back toward the sun, so was God pulling on Wakefield. Reading the story of his return was more stimulating than watching Hale-Bopp on its journey.

Magical Reels: A History of Cinema in Latin America, New Edition
ASIN: 0851703348 |
Book Description
The five hundredth anniversary of the landing of Columbus in the Americas was the occasion for a prolonged debate on the consequences for both Americans and Europeans of that fateful event. Now another anniversary looms, the centenary of the invention of the cinema, a moment in its way no less revolutionary in its effect on consciousness. Cinematic encounters between Europe and America have taken place almost throughout the entirety of this period.
This collection of essays is the first to take stock of mutual enrichment that has been the result. In the first half of the book, the contributors explore the many and varied ways in which European and North American cinemas have attempted to represent the societies of Latin America. In the second part, the focus shifts to Latin American cinema in its own terms.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Starting a Home-Based Business, by home-based attorney Barbara Weltman, provides the beginning entrepreneur with a blueprint for success in the blunt but whimsical style readers have come to expect from these types of handbooks. Basic information on financing, system setup, and separating business from pleasure is combined with specific details on taxes, marketing, and critical issues such as zoning laws and insurance to create a helpful (but never heavy handed) guide to starting and operating a profitable enterprise. Also included are discussions on franchises and other existing business opportunities.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Starting a Home-Based Business.......2005-07-21
I enjoyed the simplicity of this book. The book helped me understand what to expect from the attorney. Thanks!
I liked it!.......2005-02-19
I found this book to be highly informative, and well put together. Like most Idiot's Guides, it was easy to read, just full of great information. I'd recommend this book to anyone.
A casual and informative presentation of a serious topic.......1999-03-07
The three (3) most important areas of any book are its content, writing style, and organization. Weltman's book is superb on all three counts. It is a detailed, succinct, point-by-point introduction to a growing and popular topic in today's fast-paced, changing society.
Each chapter begins by explaining what you will learn, then explains key concepts at least twice in the middle, and finally summarizes the least you need to know about each aspect of the home business.
The book itself is divided into six useful parts, plus appendices filled with helpful information. Each part focuses on a particular aspect of running a home business, such as: your reasons for wanting your own business, the types of businesses you can run (franchises, ready-made businesses, existing businesses, or your own pet project), financing the home business, setting up the home office, running the home office, and finally common personal issues unique to running the home office and scaling up.
Broadly speaking, Weltman devotes an equal amount of space to each topic. However, some topics, such as taxation (any advanced student should keep a copy of that particular info very close by) receive a lot of attention, while others, such as planning and budgeting the start-up, are clearly de-emphasized. The book also includes a lot of useful information in little boxes on every other page such as entrepreneurial statistics, key business terminology, added information (based on experience) to help perform a particular aspect of your business better, and things to avoid while in business.
In terms of content, the book is packed with plenty of information to get you started. Though the book is very comprehensive, more advanced readers may find it to be a bit redundant at times. Key terms, concepts, and absolutely need to know information are repeated often ( for the quick learner, ad nauseum) in each chapter. This use of repetition, however, does not weaken the book, as repetition is a proven method of learning new concepts.
The book is heavily laden with useful contact information and resources. Weltman presents the essentials, the absolute bare bones structural framework for the typical home-based business. The book's major strength is its presentation of key issues in very general, easy to understand terms. You are not inundated with a lot of excess, useless resources and you are slowly and casually guided through each phase of your start-up. Weltman also thoughtfully includes good federal and state resources one can actually use.
For the initiate, everything is discussed simply and clearly, as if the author is sitting right in front of you chatting over a delicious cup of Seattle's Best Coffee (sorry folks, but Starbuck's just doesn't cut it), but the more clever may find the book a slow and plodding read (this is a thick book, folks). Now, the book's major weaknesses lie in its utter lack of information on selling methods, management techniques (classic, coordinator, or craftsman), structuring employment contracts (especially for independent contractors), scheduling, getting and keeping customers, and operating a global business (my personal interest) from home.
Weltman skillfully introduces all the things one should consider when starting a home based business. It is the approach I would take with those who want to start a business but have no idea as to how to start. Those who are really serious about starting their own home business should not stop with Weltman's book. Look to other books to present you with the meat on such topics as contracts, selling, and managing employees. More advanced readers can skip this book and start with Karen Cheney and Lesley Alderman's How to Start a Successful Home Business.

Exhaustive tome of advice and resources.......2007-09-11
Ms. Weltman provides a ton of edifying statistics regarding the current state of the working-from-home crowd: who knew there were so many people doing it these days, and doing it successfully? She gives us some idea of how long it typically takes people to start earning what they need to live on. She provides reminders of what we'll be saving by working from home, as well as the new expenses we have to take into account (such as our own health insurance!).
If you want to work from home but don't yet know what you want to do there, Ms. Weltman also includes plenty of information to help you choose. She tells us all about franchises, buying a pre-existing home-based business, e-commerce, etc. One of the appendixes includes a list of the 100 most popular types of home-based businesses, including the addresses of web sites with further information on them. You might be surprised by some of the possibilities here, such as: sketch artist, bed and breakfast, bridal consultant, personal chef, chimney sweep, nutritionist, event planner, interior decorator, jewelry designer, personal shopper, or speechwriter.
There's plenty of information on organizing your business, such as choosing whether to incorporate. There's also advice on setting up your business, writing a business plan, and obtaining financing from a variety of possible sources. Such issues as the zoning of your home are addressed, as well as legal means to get around any potential snags in this area.
Ms. Weltman goes into the practical issues of setting up your home office: office equipment, computers, and convincing your family and friends to let you get work done! She also delves into what you really need to do to make your business succeed in terms of marketing, networking, insurance, taking care of taxes, and getting the professional help you need when you can't do everything yourself.
I highly recommend this read to anyone who's thinking of starting up their own business from home: it could save you some costly mistakes, and help to ensure your success!
