So, how does a whole sport write an autobiography? With wit, grace, and insight--thank you--if the sport has seen as much, lived as much, and contributed as much verbiage as America's national pastime. Wallace, who also assembled the beautiful Baseball Anthology, has collected bits and pieces of obscure autobiographies and other written arcana from some of the best who ever played. This literary montage--stitched together with flowing narrative--is a remarkably clever, lively, and, at times, quite moving account of what it's like to play big-league ball, and just how hard a craft the game is. For the fan, that may be the equivalent of going yard, but it barely rounds first in the entirety of what Autobiography offers; a coffee-table volume in size, it gathers a spectacular lineup of photographs, from Cap Anson booting a grounder in the 19th century to the immediacy of Tony Gwynn's sweet swing, with baubles in between, like Lou Gehrig as a boy, Cy Young milking cows, a great catch by Roberto Clemente, and an amazing sequence capturing submarine pitcher Carl Mays's startling delivery.

The book's unique format allows players to compare notes on subjects as varied as the skills required for individual fielding positions to chasing a record to the difficulty of hanging up your spikes when it's all over. Gwynn and Babe Ruth weigh in on hitting with Hank Aaron and Jimmy Foxx; Bill Dickey and Johnny Bench trade catching tips; and Mickey Mantle, Honus Wagner, and Lou Gehrig share the nerves they experienced breaking into the show. These virtual dialogues across time form a skilled double-play combo with the photos that accompany them. They are Autobiography's strengths, but there's a weakness in the format, as well: nothing is examined too deeply. Still, that's not really the book's intent. Like any life story, it sets out to cover as much ground as it can, establish its own agenda, revel in what's good, air out some dark corners, and not dwell too long anywhere. To that end, Autobiography certainly scores. For fans who care about the game and adore its history, it should score pretty big. --Jeff Silverman

5 out of 5 stars over one hundred years of oral history/ amazing rare photos.......2003-04-27

This is one of the most informative(from the player perspective) books on baseball I've ever seen. Good narrative riddled with excerpts from interviews and autobiographies of the players who've made this the most beautiful sport around. Highlights include Willie Stargell's harrowing brush with Texas racism in the minors, psychological terrorism tips from Ty Cobb, playing through agony with Gary Carter and Roberto Clemente, what if's from Judy Johnson and Monte Irvin and dealing with the loneliness of language barriers in a strange land by Juan Marichal.
Humor comes from a bit on illegal pitches featuring Gaylord Perry and Burleigh Grimes, as well as Joe Sewell's innovative way to deal with a bunt down the third base line...that one led to an overnight rule change. There is also an amusing debate over who threw the first curve ball and how corn cobs made Paul Waner a better hitter.
There is also tragedy. The Carl Mays fastball that killed Ray Chapman is dealt with in these pages.
The oral history is striking and wonderful, but the rare photos are even better. Clear photos grace nearly every page, many of which I have never had the pleasure of seeing. If you love baseball with even half the passion that I embrace it , you must own this book. It's time to see what was going on before sportscenter.

Despite claims to the contrary by previous reviewers there are no stories related by Barry Bonds and this book is not in chronological order. It is, however, made to order. Slip off the dust jacket and enjoy.

                      5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2001-11-23

This book is a unique approach to examining the
national pastime of the USA. It is a picture book
that visits various eras of the game in chronological
order, along with quotes from the era's greatest stars,
many of whom are enshrined in Baseball's Hall of Fame in
Cooperstown, New York. You get to see the quotes of some
great players. The photography alone makes the book a
treasured keepsake. If you love baseball history, this
book is for you. The photography mixed with comments

about the game itself from those who participate in it
is a great concept in itself.

                      5 out of 5 stars An "All-Timer" Hit.......2000-03-29

This is a different sort of "best" book and takes the concept of oral history to a new level. Previously the players in such collections shared a common theme, like a team or time frame. But Wallace wonders what it would be like to sit down old-timers with contemporary players for a discussion of their craft. Babe Ruth and Barry Bonds . . . Bob Feller and Greg Maddux . . . brothers of the diamond shooting the breeze. Using excerpts from old interviews, Wallace seamlessly blends the generations as they regale us in tales about the pressures a rookie faces, the joy of the cheers, and the heartbreak of realizing it's time to hang 'em up. The choice of illustrations works extremely well in enhancing the stories.

                      Book Description

The entrepreneur of phonograph concerts and motion-picture programs Lyman H. Howe was the leading traveling exhibitor of his time and the exemplar of an important but until now little examined aspect of American popular culture. This work, with its numerous and lively illustrations, uses his career to explore the world of itinerant showmen, who exhibited all motion pictures seen outside large cities during the 1890s and early 1900s. They frequently built cultural alliances with genteel city dwellers or conservative churchgoers and in later years favored "high-class" topics appealing to audiences uncomfortable with the plebeian nickelodeons. Bridging the fields of American studies and film history, the book reveals the remarkable sophistication with which exhibitors created their elaborate, evening-length programs to convey powerful ideological messages. Whether depicting the Spanish-American War, the 1900 Paris Exposition, or British colonialism in action, Howe's "cinema of reassurance" had many parallels with the music of John Philip Sousa.

4 out of 5 stars An independant exhibitor.......2000-08-15

Lyman Howe was a travelling showman that originally started with 'phonograph concerts' and then switched to films when he was able to obtain a projector. He originally was a one-person operation, but at his company's height he had several groups of people touring the eastern half of the United States exhibiting films. At first he showed films any place that he could book. With the rise of the nickelodeon, he began to specialize in 'educational' and news film shows at churches, YMCAs, and civic centers. His shows featured sound effects, music, and color tinting whenever possible. He also began to produce a few films himself.

This book is an interesting look at the struggles and triumphs of an independent showman. It is very well researched. However, the exhibition side of the business is not quite as engrossing of a story as the production side. This book is also expensive. If you are not really interested in the exhibition side of the movie business it may not be worth the money you spent on it.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book of Spells.......2006-03-27

Eldritch Sorcery is exactly what it says it is: a giant book of spells.

This book contains hundreds of new spells for all of the core d20 spell casting classes, plus Assassins and Blackguards. I was impressed with the number and variety of spells available. There's a heavy emphasis on Evocation, Necromancy and Transmutation, but all of the schools are well represented. Illusion is the only school that seems to have gotten the short end of the stick.

The book is well laid out and very text dense. Unlike most d20 sourcebooks, Eldritch Sorcery contains no new Prestige Classes and only a handful of new Feats. This is a huge plus for me.

The Book of Eldritch Might, best-selling d20 System roleplaying sourcebook for all things arcane, features essential new feats, spells, magic items, classes, and creatures from the author of the Dungeon Master's Guide. Highlights include:
                          * Nine original feats including the new eldritch type, which grants specific magical abilities to enhance your spells in ways that metamagic feats can't.
                          * Three new prestige classes: the embermage, a supreme fire mage; the graven one, who covers his entire body in magical tattoos; and the mirror master, who specializes in unique mirror magic abilities and spells.
                          * More than 60 new spells of all levels that you can add to any campaign.
                          * A like number of magic items of all types, from weapons to wondrous items and artifacts! This section introduces the brand-new concepts of magic poisons and magic vehicles such as the wheeled war altar and the diving sphere.

The Book of Eldritch Might also presents a new monster template, the magical construct, which allows any spellcaster to create golemlike guardians and servants based on existing monsters.

This illustrated PDF for characters of all levels features a streamlined page layout, art by Brian LeBlanc and the Unseelie Court, and bonus content from Monte Cook's website (also featured in the print edition). You'll achieve better results by printing the 48-page book in two segments of 24 pages, rather than all at once. If you're concerned about ink usage, set your printer to "Speed" rather than "High Quality" printouts. You may want to change your printer settings to black-and-white to save on color ink, and/or not print the covers (pages 1 and 48) and product ad (page 47). The layout of this PDF was designed for double-sided printing.

One thing I like about the 3E core rulebooks is it seems like WotC play tested the hell out of them. Nearly everything is fairly well balanced. Many aspects have been simplified from the 2nd addition in a good way (though sometimes too much.) Overall, I really like 3E and consider it worth buying.

Enter supplemental materials like the Book of Eldritch Might, by Monte Cook. Let's take a look:

VALUE: Under 10 bucks for the printed version, or 5 bucks for the PDF file (available from his website). After shelling out at least 20 for each of the class books, I find this very refreshing.

DESIGN: The art in the printed version is pretty horrible. But, it's nice to have the printed bound version for easy access. However, I went with the PDF and had Kinko's print it out and spiral bind it. It's just as nice, if not nicer.

CONTENT: This is where all of Monte's D&D 3E material shines. The man is brilliant when it comes to fantasy game design. The BoEM contains new feats, spells (primary for Wizard's and Sorcs), new prestige classes, and new magic items. However, these aren't just more of the same things we've seen. Each has a unique flavor and purpose. Examples:

FEATS: Eldritch feats enhance spell-casting abilities in a whole new way outside of metamagic. Most are usable for many of your daily spells, if you meet the prereqs. Rune & tattoo magic -- very cool, great flavor to a campaign.

PRESTIGE CLASSES: For those of you that follow the many PrCs that get published through Dragon mag, Monte's are almost always unique and cool. So too in this book. Embermage: Ultimate fire mage. Graven One: A mage covered in sigils, glyphs, and tattoos, using them to invoke powerful magic. How cool of a NPC would that make? The other PrCs are solid too.

SPELLS: As mentioned, most are for Wizard and Sorc, but there is a mishmash of spells for druids and even the assassin PrC. The spells are all creative, interesting, and remarkably well-balanced.

MAGIC ITEMS: Interesting! Magic vehicles. Magic poisons. Others that vary in power, but never vary in cool factor. Your players will love to get their hands on these, and will loathe NPCs wielding them!

OVERALL: 5 Stars. One of the few accessories that I've opened up in its entirety to my game. Visit Monte Cook's website for errata to this book, and all his other Malhavok Press products...

This is an extremely useful book with new spells, feats and magic items in it. The spells are well balenced and won't require any adjustments before being put in a campaign. The PDF ... is a better value, but the print version is pretty good.

Terrific feats! Great spells! Brilliant Prestige Classes! Thrilling magical items! [understated] artwork! This work is available directly from the author at montecook.com in PDF format. In that format, the art is provided by the Unseelie Court and Luis Corte Real. THIS IS A FIVE-STAR BOOK. So, why just three stars? Because Sword & Sorcery's in-house artist Brian LeBlanc is a poor substitute indeed for the original artists. The price is higher in hardcopy, and the artwork is very poor. The one positive note is that this print version includes a couple of features not included in the PDF verson of the Book of Eldritch Might, but then these are available for free through Monte Cook's web site. Again, this otherwise nearly faultless book suffers the onus of some horrible artwork. (Think original 1st ed. Fiend Folio)

but Monte Cook has done it. This review is for the PDF file available from Monte Cook's website. The print version I just received has such poor artwork that it merits only three stars. I have written a seperate review for the print version available here.
Remeber the AD&D2 Dungeon Master's Guide? It was awful. Useless. I left it behind when I went to play. Read the 3rd edition DMG? Great, huh? I think so too. The same author left WOTC to do his own thing and return to freelance writing, and this is the first product under his new imprint: Malhavoc Press. If you're spoiled on the high quality of Wizards' products and have been reticent to try third party d20 products, I don't blame you, but this is the exception if ever there was one. I'm tempted to call this the best D&D product of '01. No question that it is in the top ten. Artwork is what you expect from good RPG products; layout is fine, yada yada. Where this product shines is in content. Unless you bought the PDF file online, you can't beat the price. The feats include some interesting goodies, the spells are fantastic, and the magical items are flat-out inspired. If you're worried at all about mechanics, then rest at ease -- Monte Cook designed the mechanics. He, Jonathon Tweet, and Skip "the Sage" Williams are the only authorities on D&D rules, and Monte Cook is my personal favorite RPG writer. This is a clear example of what d20 products should be.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent add-on to any campaign.......2003-08-06

I bought this book in the hopes that it would give me a few more items, spells and feats for my players to enjoy, and instead found a book capable of adding great flavour and verve to any campaign.

The rewrite of the bard is the highlight of this book for me. From a new and unique method of spellcasting, to a new set of skills and special abilities, the bard in this book goes from being a sort of utility spellcaster to being a completely new and unique class, a thing apart. The idea of casting spells as songs is not a new one, but the way that it's done here is nothing short of brilliant, encouraging bards to use their spells while not sacrificing any of the other abilities of the class.

The feats focus mainly on bardic activity, as do the prestige classes, making the addition of the soul magic section seem, at first, like a last-minute add-on. It's not. Soul magic is, as another reviewer's said, the use of intelligent spells, and saying more than that would be spoiling things. They really will add depth to my games in the future.

As if that weren't enough good stuff (for less than half the price of a standard hard-bound WoTC title), there are also a smattering of new and useful spells, perfect for making surprise scrolls and adding detail to a campaign.

I recommend this book to anyone looking to spice up the bard class, and anyone interested in some new and unusual spells and abilities.

VALUE: Under 15 bucks for the printed version, or 5 bucks for the PDF file (available from his website). After shelling out at least 20 for each of the class books, I find this very refreshing.

DESIGN: The art in the printed version is some of the finest yet in a Malhavok product. Monte continues to enlist better and better artists for each product. (I went with the PDF and had Kinko's print it out and spiral bind it.)

CONTENT: This is where all of Monte's D&D 3E material shines. The man is brilliant when it comes to fantasy game design. Like BoEM I, The BoEM II contains new feats, spells (primary for Wizard's and Sorcs), new prestige classes, and new magic items. However, these aren't just more of the same things we've seen. Each has a unique flavor and purpose. However, first lets go over what's totally new: Variant versions of the bard and sorcerer.

BARD: Since 3rd Edition came out, I've seen a million variant rangers, and half a million variant bards. Monte comes through in spades with his variant bard. No longer the sub-par sorcerer rogue fighter, the new bard uses spellsongs to power his unique magical talents. Big thumbs up.

SORCERER: Unlike Monte's variant ranger & bard, his sorcerer is not an attempt to fix a class that was considered 'broken' by so many. Indeed, many consider the sorcerer to kick butt. But, he can get a little boring, casting the same spells all day. This sorcerer really captures the feel of innate, raw magical power. I use Monte's bard, ranger, and sorcerer in my game, and have never looked back.

SOUL MAGIC: A brand new concept for intelligent... spells. A really cool idea that I don't want to spoil. Check it out...

OTHER: Then we have pages of fantastic feats (the lace spell feats rock), spells, prestige classes, and magical items. Like BoEM I, these are all innovative, stylish, and rather deadly. In my campaign I've made the Book of Eldritch Might I & II spells a bit more rare. They are considered powerful secrets to learn of. Once you see some of these spells, you'll see what I mean by powerful...

Apply Lean Thinking to Dynamic, High-Mix Manufacturing
CREATING MIXED MODEL VALUE STREAMS: Practical Lean Techniques for Building to Demand
                          Kevin J. Duggan

How can you apply value stream mapping and lean concepts to the more complex environment created by mixed model (high variety) manufacturing operations? CREATING MIXED MODEL VALUE STREAMS helps to address the challenges of high-mix manufacturing.

                          Topics Covered Include:
Mapping value streams in real-life manufacturing environments
Developing future states that can respond to daily changes in customer demand
Creating flow through the "pacemaker" process when products have different cycle times
Setting up mixed model heijunka (load leveling) boxes that provide visual schedules at regular intervals
Applying mix logic charts to determine finished-goods strategies and meet seasonal demand

The author uses a step-by-step approach, illustrated through a case study based actual experience, to go beyond the basics of value stream mapping and to show how to create future states in the real manufacturing world of multiple products, varying cycle times, and changing demand. The book includes a CD-ROM featuring useful spreadsheets for sorting products into families and calculating equipment needs.

Comprehensive and down-to-earth, CREATING MIXED MODEL VALUE STREAMS provides the details and techniques for implementing lean in the complex environment that manufacturers face on their own shop floors.

4 out of 5 stars Accessible Exposition of Principles but the Devil's in the Details.......2006-09-24

In this very good book author Kevin Duggan describes an approach to implementing lean manufacturing in challenging environments characterized by a high degree of variety, shared resources, and lumpy demand. All too often in such situations, practitioners conclude that lean principles can be applied incompletely or not at all. Significant missed process improvement opportunities follow from this foundational misunderstanding.

Duggan develops his material using as a case study the hypothetical EMC Supply Company. Value stream mapping is used throughout the book to depict the current scenario and the various improvements to achieve the desired future state.

The author starts at the very beginning, with a discussion of how the proper definition of product families is critical to the creation of flow in high mix plants. He goes on to introduce the concepts of takt time and the pacemaker operation for the process. From there the discussion moves to the balancing of operations, presentation of materials at the point of use, scheduling the work, and dealing with variation in customer demand.

These concepts are applied by the EMC implementation team and are illustrated with an evolving series of value stream maps. As a result the presentation has a "real world" feel to it that should encourage application of the principles.

One significant caveat needs however to be mentioned. Successful implementation is about pressing through countless details in every situation. Duggan draws attention to this in various places writing for example, "Material presentation for a high mix of products will take some creativity and planning. This is an area where we will have to sweat the details".

In fact, in my experience as a lean implementer, the details need to be sweated at every turn. The concepts may be simple, elegant, and often self evident, but putting them into action requires an almost obsessive attention to a myriad of practical intricacies.

For those committed to making this effort the results will be impressive. This book can help make it happen.

Value stream mapping and lean "nuts and bolts" for high variety - low quantity products. This book walks the reader through the process of setting up a high variety flow. I am no lean expert by an stretch of the imagination, but found this book to be extremely helpful in understanding and implementing the technique of flow.

The writing is very clear and concise. Graphics show clearly the subject being discussed.

I suggest reading Learning to See first to understand how to create value stream maps, then apply those learned skills to the floor using Creating Mixed Model Value Streams.

This book should be a required core course in the lean planned program of study. But remember there is no graduation, only life long learning.
