i read this story in a ratty old copy that i pinched from the flat of a very dear friend of mine living in London. It is a story that is guaranteed to irritate the life out of almost ninety-nine percent of the world's population. But for the lost sheep? well they may find at least comfort in reading this book, the same comfort that is gained from Miss Jean Rhys novels. That is you're not alone. Anyone who finds this blurb the wishy washy nonsense of a born looser, well your right. and you certainly won't gain a thing from reading this book

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A225714. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The term 'security' has always been vague in terms of its definition. After the end of the Cold War however this vagueness increased as new paradigms emerged. Those studying security need a better understanding of the term 'security' to deal with complex issues within the broadly understood discipline of security studies. This thesis describes the uncertain nature of security by analyzing: (1) various definitions of security and some of the terms directly related to it in different contexts; and (2) the empirical meaning of security by examining threats as indicators of 'insecurity' based on the different characters of threats and levels of analysis from the field of international relations. The thesis argues that regardless of the vague meaning of the term 'security' empirically its parameters are quite certain and definable by the specification of threats as indicators of insecurity. This clarification of the meaning of security studies, in turn, makes it easier for scholars and policy- makers to deal with this increasingly important sphere of human life.

                      1 out of 5 stars Crap.......2006-04-20

Poorly written, no real insight into the person. Its just page after page of vague match summaries and meaningless things. And some of the language is badly written as this was translated from a danish version of the book. Not worth a read.

3 out of 5 stars Stick to your day job, honey.......2000-07-24

Even with a writer to aid him, it's clear that Schmeichel is more skilled with his hands and feet than with words.

You have to be a Schmeichel fan - as I am - to want to read this book from cover to cover.. Great literature it ain't.

I was disappointed that it did not give me more insights about his relationship with his mates in Man U, and his relationship with Ferguson - whose own books are eminently more interesting and insightful than this one. It was a little too much a Me Me Me book.

Perhaps the problem I had was that I read this book right after reading a transcript of interviews with Johan Cruyff, who is as skilled speaking as he was toying with a football.

Still, if one is interested in goalkeeping and goalkeepers, this would be a decent read even for a non Schmeichel fan.

                      5 out of 5 stars too good.......2000-04-15

nothing to say, just really good

                      5 out of 5 stars good.......2000-04-15

nothing to say, one real thing is that its really good. If you are peter's fans, you must buy it. Best book I have ever seen

5 out of 5 stars Schmike is the best.......2000-03-28

This autobiography is the best one that I have ever seen. It has all the details about the best ever goalkeeper in the world---PETER SCHMEICHEL. It is also include some interesting things about his relationship with his former Manchester United teammates as well. If you are a SCHMEICHEL's fan, you should buy one rightaway!

Reading William Froug's Zen and the Art of Screenwriting, screenwriter Erich Leon Harris realized that, as much as he liked it, none of the writers who were interviewed was black. Not being one to complain, Harris fired off a proposal to the publishers and wound up with a deal to do his own book. While African American Screenwriters Now has a different cultural lens with which to approach the craft, this collection has the same range--from the prosaic to the passionate--as the volume that inspired it.

This book is informative and entertaining. The author (himself a screenwriter) interviews screenwriters, storytellers and directors from the standpoint of technique, opportunity, successes and failures. The interviewees and their experiences are diverse and enlightening for all, not just African Americans.

                      Book Description

Sarah Vowell exposes the glorious conundrums of American history and culture with wit, probity, and an irreverent sense of humor. With Assassination Vacation, she takes us on a road trip like no other -- a journey to the pit stops of American political murder and through the myriad ways they have been used for fun and profit, for political and cultural advantage.

From Buffalo to Alaska, Washington to the Dry Tortugas, Vowell visits locations immortalized and influenced by the spilling of politically important blood, reporting as she goes with her trademark blend of wisecracking humor, remarkable honesty, and thought-provoking criticism. We learn about the jinx that was Robert Todd Lincoln (present at the assassinations of Presidents Lincoln, Garfield, and McKinley) and witness the politicking that went into the making of the Lincoln Memorial. The resulting narrative is much more than an entertaining and informative travelogue -- it is the disturbing and fascinating story of how American death has been manipulated by popular culture, including literature, architecture, sculpture, and -- the author's favorite -- historical tourism. Though the themes of loss and violence are explored and we make detours to see how the Republican Party became the Republican Party, there are all kinds of lighter diversions along the way into the lives of the three presidents and their assassins, including mummies, show tunes, mean-spirited totem poles, and a nineteenth-century biblical sex cult.

5 out of 5 stars My first summer reading title.......2007-07-29

So, I started this book while working at a youth arts camp for bratty children and fell into it very quickly, having it act as a getaway more than anything, at first.

Vowell has a very great tone in her writing that, apparently, not everyone finds as endearing as I do. Having visited many of the sites she's writing about (hooray, family road trips!), it's refreshing to read her accounts of the places.

Certainly, the section of the book concerning Lincoln is the best. I haven't done a lot of presidential reading, though I have caught the occasional special on PBS about various presidents, but I felt that the section of the book concerning Lincoln's assassination showed a side to everything that I'd never known about--i.e. Wilkes-Booth's thespian family roots, Robert Lincoln aka the Angel of Presidential death, etc.

The other two sections seemed, to me at least, rushed, although, as Vowell points out, it's hard to compare other presidents, even in death, to Lincoln.

All in all, I felt it was a great quick read that leaves you with some conversation fodder for your next shindig. Everyone enjoys some presidential trivia, right?

                      5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book!!.......2007-07-24

If you know Sarah Vowell from NPR, you'll hear her idiosyncratic voice on every page. And I guess if you don't know her from NPR, then it will just be a fantastic, funny, historic read in your own voice. Vowell is droll, sarcastic, and a Mistress of Irony. It's facinating to see how her mind works, making connection after connection that would probably never occur to mortal humans like the rest of us.

4 out of 5 stars Just what I needed this summer..........2007-07-04

This was a library pick, as I wasn't entirely sure if it would be a keeper. While not exactly something I'd read over and over, it was definitely a good read, honestly, a perfect little book for your summer reading list, as it's light enough to be read in bits, but chock full of fun things that will prepare you to compete on Jeopardy.

The book is part history, part travelogue, part memoir, covering Vowell's various trips to locations around the United States that have links to three presidential assassinations. The book is witty, sarky, and full of dark humor. Honestly, I think she wanted an excuse to write about a trip to the Mütter Museum. In the book she covers the assassination of Lincoln, McKinley and Garfield. She does so by interspersing random bits of trivia (did you know that Robert Todd Lincoln was present or nearby all three assassinations?) She also manages to tie together such disparate things as a Victorian-era sex commune and America's newest national park.

She does it all in a quick-paced, rapid fire, seemingly random association of events. Sometimes they do click, sometimes they don't, but either way, you'll walk away from the particular topic going "Hrmm... I didn't know that."

This book should be particularly entertaining to people who live in DC or New York City, as a lot of her accounts involve locales in this area. I found the DC stuff particularly charming, as nearly everything she pointed out is familiar to me on some level. I half expected her to start blathering about the Roxy Owls, to be honest.

The low point for me, though, has to do with the fact that the book starts off with a sort of smug cosmopolitan egotism that really turned me off. The whole "I know what bubble tea is, and these backwater farmers I'm visiting don't." I was particularly annoyed with her commentary about Richmond, as she seemed to paint the entire place as full of racist hatemongers. She made this assumption based purely on the fact that the Confederacy based its capital here, and John Wilkes Booth spent a good deal of time here. Heck, she even goes so far as to conjecture that Booth and Poe are so messed up because they lived here at some point.

I'm kinda offended by this, as I live here, and Richmond, honestly isn't that bad, especially in the racist hatemonger side of things. Sure, we don't have a decent place to get bubble tea anymore, but Richmond is not really fitting of the whole aura she gives it.

But honestly, that was my only sore point with the book.

I will also add, as a bonus she is one of us. You know what I mean. She drops the secret handshakes all over the book. From her giddiness at visiting the Müter Museum, to her amusement when a docent patted her gently to warn her that it might be a little "scary," to her pride in the fact that her three year old nephew has the word "crypt" in his limited vocabulary. I can assure you, that you are reading a book written by someone who has listened to "Floodland" a few times.

Finally, if you consider yourself conservative, support the Iraq war, and think George Bush is the awesome (which is honestly what she should have picked on in regards to Richmond), then this book will annoy you. Avoid it. Otherwise, it's worth the few days to read it!

5 out of 5 stars The funniest, breeziest tour of American history you'll probably ever read........2007-07-02

It's a darned good book. Everyone should go and read it. It's a great page-turner, and Vowell's fascination with American history is infectious. (If this were a book about the history of typhoid, that would be a joke, and it would be *money*.) She's a funny writer, has a number of ingenious turns of phrase, and draws connections between events in a way that would make James Burke (of Scientific American) proud. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars See, I told you History is fun.......2007-06-22

I want to hang out with Sarah Vowell. More to the point I want to take in some museums and historical landmarks with her and listen in on her conversations with curators, docents and misinformed teens (is there any other kind?). The great thing about Vowell is that in reading one of her books you feel as though you ARE hanging out with her and the assorted lucky friends and relatives who accompany her around America's historical sites. These sites include the arcane, the morbid and the iconic an whatever else is in between.

The pretext for this meandering is to gain insight into the first three assassinations of American presidents That fourth one has, and doubtless will continue to be, beaten quite to death by writers, journalists, researchers and curmudgeons like me resulting in way more questions than answers. The deaths of Lincoln, Garfield and McKinley are a lot tidier in a whodunit and why sense. The latter two especially have received scant attention from the general American public. (There was some president named Garfield McKinley killed by an anarchist office seeker in 1873, I think.)

Anyway Vowell and readers have a lot of fun tracing the events and participants of these assassinations. From Key West, Florida to Springfield, Illinois to New York, New york. From statues, museums, plaques and monuments soak in some American history and enjoy the unique and humorous voice of Sarah Vowell.

While I enjoyed most every page I particularly like the chapter on Garfield who's surprising rise to and brief time as president is so emblematic of an era and who's assassin was such a bizarre character so emblematic of a particular kind of psychosis.

Readers will also appreciate that Vowell is always true to her voice and never hides her biases and predilections but never betrays her true intent of telling a charming and insightful story.

A good time will be had by all.

When Roger Wilkes decided to reopen the file on the fifty-year-old Wallace murder case to make a radio documentary, he knew he was taking on one of the most celebrated unsolved mysteries in the history of British crime. Ever since the night in January, 1931 when the body of Julia Wallace was found on the floor of her Liverpool sitting-room, her head crushed by a series of violent blows, police, criminologists, journalists, even novelists, have been trying to agree on the identity of her killer. Was it her husband, who was tried, found guilty and sentenced to hang for murder, only to be acquitted on the grounds of insufficient evidence? Wilkes knew there had initially been another major suspect in the case, a young man who had a curious relationship with both Wallace and his wife. Why had the police let possible charges against him quietly drop? How could Wilkes get some new answers. His approach was novel: as News Editor of Radio City, Liverpool's independent radio station, Wilkes had access over the air to anyone who might have been involved in the case, still be alive, and willing to talk. In making a carefully researched programme to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Julia Wallace's death, he appealed for information. He could not foresee the tremendous response he would get - or how astonishing and significant one particular revelation would be. This book is the story of the making of that programme, and a subsequent one, taking some startling new evidence from the public into account. It has all the ingredients of a classic whodunnit - an intricate piece of detection vividly described; a mysterious other woman still unwilling to talk, a crucial witness overlooked by the police, a wronged man and a ruined life, a villain allowed to go free, a possible cover-up - all the more compelling for being real. Most significant of all, Roger Wilkes names the man he feels really did kill Julia Wallace, and describes how, and why, he did it.

The title of this collection of humorous essays could also serve as a warning label for its readers. They'll want to stay on guard as GQ writer-at-large Rakoff (Fraud) skewers everything and everyone he encounters. His writing is at its best when trained on the pompous and ostentatious: flying on the Concorde or visiting an exclusive, $1,300-a-night resort off Belize. While attending the Paris couture shows, Rakoff reveals the silliness of the whole enterprise with quips about Karl Lagerfeld's preweight loss "large doughy rump" and the "dry spaghetti" of one model's hair. In another piece, a prominent Beverly Hills plastic surgeon tells Rakoff, "this is the Dark Ages" for cosmetic surgery (meaning that future generations will be amazed by the inevitable advances) before taking him into an examination room. While Rakoff's sardonic wit is clearly his greatest asset, it is sometimes his undoing; the same dry humor that works so well when aimed at the rich and decadent seems mean-spirited when applied to less prominent targets, like "Wildman" Steve Brill, who forages for food in New York City's parks. Still, Rakoff is generally a knowing observer of "first world problems," and his devilishly uncomfortable commentaries are generally quite funny.

A book that guides readers in how to handle a popular variation of the Sicilian Defence, which is far and away the most popular chess opening. An intimidating body of theory has been developed around the Sicilian's main lines, in which White grants his opponent a central majority which may prove an important factor later on. Many players prefer to avoid the all-or-nothing attacks of the Open Sicilian, turning instead to the positionally sound 2 c3 line. White prepares to seize space and will develop his pieces rapidly to natural squares. Those who specialize in the 2 c3 Sicilian find it to be an excellent point-scorer, as Black has not only objective difficulties to contend with, but also has the psychological problem that he is battling just for equality, with little prospect of taking the initiative.

5 out of 5 stars First rate - best book on the opening.......2005-02-28

This is both a repertoire book for white, and also a complete guide, written with passion by two authors who are both enthusiastic exponents. It presents an honest and detailed account of the theory of the 2 c3 Sicilian, a line many Sicilian Defense players loathe facing. Obviously anyone taking up the opening with white will require this book, but also players of the black side of the Sicilian will find it required reading, because of the extensive original analysis it contains. Well done Gambit for keeping alive the traditional objective openings book when the search for truth is paramount.

I have some problems with the accuracy of the analysis.

thats true if black is not familar with the idea that he must push the kingside pawns almst immediately. but thats not even the point. I expected much more detailed variations, certainly more than just 2 pages! of coverage on something they consider the best try. Really I could have done better with my sister on that part than these two 'experts'..thats not a joke either

5 out of 5 stars Probably The Best Book On This Subject.......2007-03-10

I have read and own numerous books on real estate investment and found this one to be one of the most concise and detailed books on apartment house investing on the market. I really don't understand what a previous reviewer meant by that it was a total loss. I found it to be detailed and informative. It literally takes you by the hand leads into investing on a property. I will be following the author's advice and begin investing in small apartment properties. If you are seeking true financial independence, you would be wise to purchase this book and not the crap promoted on late night t.v.

5 out of 5 stars Worth The Investment.......2006-05-07

This is one of four books on purchasing and managing real estate that we purchased. Although pricey due to availability in hardback only, for those such as us that are first time buyers of commercial real estate, the data, clarity of thought and information will likely prove very valuable. It is a quick read that provides the basic tenets of buying multi-family units. The financial elements are fairly simplistic; hence we purchased an additional book that delves into the intricacies of purchasing and financing multi-family units.

Of the three books I've read on investing in multi-family real estate, this is by far the best. The author does a good job of walking the reader through from start to finish the purchase of a representative property. In the appendix the author provides several very easy to understand and useful financial analysis templates which can easily be recreated in Excel or any other spreadsheet program.

I found the book to be a very concise (Nuts & Bolts) and logical approach to buying small apartment properties from someone who obviously knows the process. He gives you all the tools needed to anaylise, purchase, manage and project profits. The forms in the book are easily accessed at the publisher's website www.dnapress.com for downloading. I'm closing on a 7 unit property in less than 2 weeks. Thanks Brian!
