    Book Description

The Broadway Books Library of Larceny
    Luc Sante, General Editor

McGoorty is master billiards writer Robert Byrne’s racy account of the life of Danny McGoorty, a billiards champion of that bygone era when cue artists were often scam artists and pool rooms were held to be dens of iniquity. Hustler and hobo, womanizer and fashion plate, McGoorty was at once eyewitness to Capone’s Chicago and the feats of greats like Willie Hoppe and Willie Mosconi. In an all-American voice at once sarcastic, profane, humorous, and chock full of colorful lingo, he relates his colorful and seedy life and times with a unique style and brio.

“Pool hustler, hobo, alcoholic, ladies’ man, and tournament player... McGoorty was a Runyonesque character and a first-rate raconteur. The result is a memoir that should rack up many readers, even among those that don’t know a cue from a swizzle stick.”
       PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

“At times funny, occasionally filthy, here and there exaggerated, but it’s an entertaining story of a guy who doesn’t try to pass himself off as any sort of giant at the table: just a fellow who loved the game.”

2 out of 5 stars The tale of a life wasted.......2005-02-20

Danny McGoorty was a gifted pool and billiards player. He was also a lazy, drunk petty thief. He spent his life trying his best to avoid honest work. He took as much as he could get from everyone that crossed his path without ever giving anything back. He died bitter and broke.

There, now you don't need to read the book.

5 out of 5 stars Have a sense of humor..........2004-10-25

This isn't "Rudy" Ruettiger and it's not an "inspirational" sports biography. You're not going to learn much about how to play billiards either. If you read this expecting some moral triumph, you are going to miss the point. McG was a sad, pathetic drunk who told truths, lies, half-truths about his failed career as a billaird player. This said, he had a real wit and a flair for pegging people. More than anything, this is a good Depression-era American period piece. It's also a look inside the mind of one candid, unscrupulous character. McG is a funny guy, a sad guy, a nice guy and a wicked guy. Even when he lies he's sincere. If you ever knew a bum, drunk or poolroom hustler you liked and hated at the same time, give it a shot. But this book doesn't belong on the shelf with Byrne's instruction books, or really even with the other billiards biographies; it belongs next to the other volumes of the Library of Larceny: Ponzi, Liebling and Sutton.

    1 out of 5 stars McGoorty.......2004-08-23

I can't imagine anyone wanting to write a book about this man.He was nothing but a vulgar, lazy, lying alcoholic.Half of the things that he says are nothing but B.S.For instance,Chicago police officers murdering suspected gangsters @ black men for 200$ a pop.I could go on @ on but you should get the idea.Save your money. As for me, I am going to line my cats litter box with my copy.

    4 out of 5 stars Pool's Fool.......2004-04-14

This book is one of the few biograghy's i've read that had a true voice of the subject. Gritty, smutty, vulgar and incitful. It tells the tale of the wayward life led by one of this country's greatest pool and billiards players, witten from audiotapes by Robert Byrne, Mcgoorty comes to life.

4 out of 5 stars If vulgar doen't bother you.......2001-11-13

This is another wonderfully written book by Robert Byrne. It shows the vivid life of a pool hustler/hobo/drunk/real person that was in his prime in the 1920's-1950's. If gives a real sense of McGoorty and his life in what apear to be his own words. He also shares extremely colorful insight, his opinion, into several famous and well known professional billiard players and World Champions of his era. It is full of real life experiences during those times; however, the language and crude tone are very vulgar. If you're not offended it is an enjoyable interesting read.

    5 out of 5 stars A pleasure to read.......2004-12-29

PASSION is a fine book about a complex artist. Like a reader below, I am shocked that so many people have found this book "dense" and "unreadable". What do you expect from an academic press? Also, it's clear that "ed" and "Ryan" are the same person--they use the same words and make the same gramatical mistakes. To ed/Ryan I would ask this: you say (twice) that this is the only book about Pasolini in English. Well, guess what? There are at least EIGHT that I can think of off-hand, most of which you ought to be able to order right here from Amazon.com. If you can't even track down any of those books, how do you expect to read something as intricate as this one?

5 out of 5 stars A serious book for serious people.......2004-09-20

The great contemporary philosopher Judith Butler wrote an op ed piece for the "New York Times" a while back in which she beautifully explained why it is writers need complex forms of rhetoric in order to explain complex subject matter.

No filmmaker was more complex, intelligent, and, indeed, difficult than Pier Paolo Pasolini, and Sam Rhodie's book does a nice job of using the theoretical tools necessary to adequately address the late great filmmaker/poet/philosopher. As far as I'm concerned, if you can't understand Rhodie's book, you'll never be able to understand Pasolini's films, so you shouldn't even bother trying. His great films are the cinematic equivalent of Foucault, Barthes, Althusser, and Delezue, and they're not for people only interested in them for the nudity, sex and violence. Pasolini said as much over and over again in his own, published newspaper essays. In fact, he was always sad that so many people came to watch his films with shallow intentions, particularly those "fans" he aquired after the "Trilogy of Life" and "Salo". On the other hand, I'm sure PPP would have been very pleased by THE PASSION OF PIER PAOLO PASOLINI.

1 out of 5 stars it IS dull and difficult.......2004-09-03

despite what one SINGLE reviewer said, this book was impenetrably dense. and, for the record, i have two post graduate degrees in film...so i am familiar with the concept of reading something deeper than an entertainment weekly article...nice assumption, btw... this book is not only difficult to read, but i believe intentionally, and unnecessarily so. GOOD writers realize that sentences do not need to drag on for line after line. the truly unfortunate thing is that i am intensely interested in pasolini's life and work. i have been unable to find any work, in english, dealing with this fascinating figure... although maybe i should try reading some of the books in italian. they would probably make more sense... oh wait, i guess that makes me shallow...maybe i should try reading it while drinking egg nog...that might help.

1 out of 5 stars Unreadable and pedantic.......2003-11-05

Pasolini's cinema is profound and yet uncomplicated at the same time - I believe that his extraordinary films can be readily understood by the average viewer. Nonetheless, I was looking for a text that would help me to assess further the entire body of Pasolini's cinema, to see the common denominators in all the films and augment my critical eye. Rohdie's book is useless to me and mostly unreadable. The sentences are very long and pedantic. You keep waiting for facts or ideas that will enhance your appreciation of Pasolini's life and work but they never arrive. It appears to be a text that was written to impress academic colleagues or an editor. I have a graduate degree and studied film as an undergraduate, and I wouldn't recommend this boring volume even for use as a college textbook.

5 out of 5 stars A great Pasolini book for educated readers.......2003-11-01

I have a particular passion for Pasolini, and I've read most of the English language books about him and his films. This is, for my money, one of the two or three best. (Naomi Greene's "Cinema as Heresy" is still the best volume with which to start.)

I found this a great follow-up. It's a book dealing with a number of topics related to Pasolini that most other authors have downplayed or ignored (like his work about Africa.) Yes, it's an academic book. It's released by a university press (Indiana UP), which should tip potential readers off to the fact that this isn't some sort of Entertainment Weekly level book. Still, I'm puzzled by other comments claiming this is unusually difficult or boring. (If you want difficult reading, try to read Pasolini's own essays!) I read this volume around the house during a Christmas break while drinking eggnog with my family and didn't have need for the unabridged dictionary. Feel free to click onto the sample pages here on Amazon. The prose's sentence length and complexity seems about average for adult reading to me. I guess that if you're ill-educated in critical theory and find yourself interested in this title only because of the book's sexually shocking cover (and Pasolini's scandalous reputation), you'll be disappointed. But if you want a smart account of Pasolini's work in the era of Queer Theory and Post-Colonial Studies, this is a book for you.

        Book Description

Nothing can keep the 1950s housewife down—not dirt, not disappointment, not life! With a smile and a little elbow grease, she tackles the cranky husband after work, calms rowdy children with a snack, and erases that stubborn bathtub ring. Add the improvements of "modern" technology, and she's got time to do even more. Dancing across the floor, mop in hand and makeup in place, RETRO HOUSEWIFE is a tongue-in-cheek presentation of the role of the 1950s housewife. Vintage product advertisements trumpet the man as head of household and woman as keeper of the home, with special instructions for women on how to be an attentive wife, efficient homemaker, and supermom. Kitschy and fun, this look back at how far we've come makes a perfect gift for your favorite female phenomenon.

3 out of 5 stars Photos and descriptions & text don't always match.......2007-08-25

This is a cute coffee table book with reprints of ads from the late 1940's and 1950's.

The main thing that I found frustrating with this book is that the photos did not match the descriptions (or the text/narratives) ! I counted, and only 2 photos matched the descriptions even remotely.
I'm not sure why the author decided to write her book in this manner, but it was so frustrating ....for me.

So, if you are buying this book for the kitschy photos, then this book will delight. But when reading the text, you will have to use your imagination. Good luck.

4 out of 5 stars Good for the coffee table, but not for serious info.......2007-04-16

This book was fun to flip through. I love the colorful ads. And though I do not clean house in a dress and heals, I appreciate those days that seemed to encourage "clean" and "neat" now that we have a nation of slobs and packrats. Seriously. I get so grossed out when I go to other people's houses... it's like no one teaches hygeine and sanitation anymore.

I have two complaints about the book. One is that the ads never match the text on the page. I was reading thinking, "Now this text belongs with the ad on page..." It was like ads were just stuck in wherever there was room. Also, more text on the day-to-day housewifing would have been nice.

        Still, it's a fun-to-peruse book.

        5 out of 5 stars I Loved It!.......2007-01-01

There was a time when people lived like this. I know it's gone now, and I know we are supposed to be more 'with it.' And it should be mentioned that nowadays in this nation, it is almost impossible for a middle class family to get by on one salary.

But that doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with this period of time in history. It's just the way it was. The best thing about this are the fabulous, color-illustrations. The fifties advertisements had flair, boldness, and connoted happiness in everyday situations. Life moved at a slower pace and there was more 'one on one' interaction with family and friends. The advertisements mirrored that fact.

We are way past those times today. In fact the advertisements of today can't hold a candle to their predecessors; Everything has to be 'in your face shocking.' Unfortunately there is a supreme lack of imagination in today's advertisements, which make some of us look back fondly at a time when people treated each other better, were more considerate and yes, life was really in color.

5 out of 5 stars Fun coffee table book.......2006-06-20

This book was lots of fun! It is mostly a picture book, but there are descriptions and commentary as well mixed in. This book would be a fun wedding shower gift and would make a great coffee table book.

        1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2005-05-26

Do you love clip-art!!! No? ok well then this is not the book for you. When I ordered this book I was hoping for some insight to the things that were being taught to the housewives, and future housewives in the 50's. Sadly this wasn't what was in the book, instead the whole thing consisted of old ads advertising everything from washers to steak and drawings from books of that era, along with a fact or statistic. For example page 72 shows drawings of 50's women in various outfits and reads "In 1957, supermarkets welcomed frozen pizza to thier inventory." The next page shows a drawing from an advertisment for an oven and the text reads, "Diner's club issued the first credit card in 1951 to 200 customers for use in 27 restaraunts. Card holders could only use the card for meal payments." And this goes on and on for a whopping 127 pages. I was hoping for some text from home economics books of the era, or magazine articles. Something a bit more meaty. The book doesn't deliver anything more than pictures and factoids...which in my mind fail to deliver on the "a salute to the suburban superwoman" promise. Oh well there's always Donna Reed re-runs!

Patterns are simple to understand (after you've read a few) and the book includes suggestions for modern day substitutions for yarn and hooks.

                        Book Description

While mainstream financial theories and applications assume that asset returns are normally distributed, overwhelming empirical evidence shows otherwise. Yet many professionals don’t appreciate the highly statistical models that take this empirical evidence into consideration. Fat-Tailed and Skewed Asset Return Distributions examines this dilemma and offers readers a less technical look at how portfolio selection, risk management, and option pricing modeling should and can be undertaken when the assumption of a non-normal distribution for asset returns is violated. Topics covered in this comprehensive book include an extensive discussion of probability distributions, estimating probability distributions, portfolio selection, alternative risk measures, and much more. Fat-Tailed and Skewed Asset Return Distributions provides a bridge between the highly technical theory of statistical distributional analysis, stochastic processes, and econometrics of financial returns and real-world risk management and investments.

5 out of 5 stars READ THE BACK PAGE & PREFACE!.......2006-10-17

To all 1* reviewers, moaning about this being a "superficial" book - READ THE BACK PAGE, quote "...they offer you a LESS TECHNICAL look at how portfolio selection, risk management & option pricing modeling should and can be undertaken..."

Now, READ THE PREFACE: page xii "We must admit our intent at the outset was to provide a NON-TECHNICAL treatment of the topic."

If you can't understand who this book is intended for, are you qualified to write a review? To dismiss this as a book for "name droppers" reflects an arrogant misunderstanding. Everyone has to start somewhere on the learning curve.

In terms of its stated aim, this book does an excellent job. There are hundreds of thousands of investment "professionals" who have never heard of stable Paretian distributions or copulas, who would benefit from education. And, yes it is printed on cheap paper. But that makes it very light & easy to carry round! Is it overpriced? Of course - nothing new there. But savvy buyers don't pay full price anyway.

2 out of 5 stars Little Help For the Ordinary Investing Stiff.......2006-09-21

As a reader of Rachev and co's earlier work 'Stable Paretian Models in Finance' this work is admittedly about halfway down from the mathematical stratosphere where the former floated. If anyone knows of a work which can clearly and convincingly explain the implications of this work for the mug punter please let me know at jenpalex@actapple.org.au.

1 out of 5 stars Too superficial to be of any value........2006-08-16

I purchased this book because I was told that it "treated" important topics in the statistical analysis of fat-tailed distributions of price movements--namely, copulas, modeling of VaR under non-normal stable distributions, etc. Unfortunately, these topics are given little substantive coverage. The book is basically a long survey article with little practical instruction for HOW to deal with fat-tailed distributions. The one strong point of the book is the extensive list of references. Mainly though, the book suffers from the general sense of "math anxiety" that is so prevalent throught the population. Bottom line, if you don't know enough math to deal with the technicalities that the authors so studiously avoid, you can't do anything useful with the modeling of fat-tailed distributions. Consequently, I cannot think of any audience for whom this book would be useful, other than someone wishing to do a literature search of the substantive work in this area.

                        3 out of 5 stars look inside.......2006-06-06

One can read the ToC and the first chapter (introduction) with Amazon's "look inside" feature/service. I think this lets one make good estimate of the book's level and depth of coverage, and to decide if the book meets one's needs.

1 out of 5 stars statistical data miner.......2006-03-22

I unfortunately learned too late that the negative review of Jukka Taskinen was understatement.

The "book" is a series of shallow, disjointed chapters that just touch on the important topics. It superficially skims a wide range of issues so that the reader can be a term-dropping jack-of-all-trades but master of none.

I was partially lulled by its availability as a .pdf, which is convenient, and its title and purported thesis of heavy-tailed modeling, which really is a very important thesis but is just a red herring here: the book provides very superficial treatment of this concept throughout, without really building a solid methodological case for it (even though its true, which is why its clever and deceptive marketing, rather than a scholarly OR useful practitioner work). It provides no new insight generally, and the only new insight to me was that I am beginning to see what passes as a typical of Fabozzi publication. I'm angry I wasted the $$.
