Great hilarious book on true mountaineering........2005-08-30
Tom is both a gifted climber and writer. If you like arm chair mountaineering books, and have read "the White spider" or any of the other North face of the Eiger climbing books you'll really love his take on that climb. Plus his climbers dictionary is just great. I second this opinion, buy this book!

Tom Patey not only climbed some wicked routes, but was an incredibly gifted and humorous writer, often in a self effacing manner. This is one of the best climbing books I have ever read. Three words: Buy this book!

Truth in its Title.......2006-08-03
This book does exactly what its title says. I like the way it uses nine different instructors to teach different techniques. It does not waste space with guitar playing basics and starts right off with a full explanation of strum and bass note patterns. This is much more than the usual boom-chucka stuff I find in many books. It gives three pages of varied, and increasingly challenging, examples. After several weeks, I still go back to these pages to practice.
The accompanying CD is fun to listen to these experts playing. Fortunately, they were smart enough to play each example at a slower pace so you can actually hear and learn how to do it yourself. I find tremendous value by accompanying them in addition to doing it myself.
I have learned more and enjoyed my guitar more than any other book.
Covers a range of skills well.......2003-09-20
The first few chapters of this book are very much at the beginner level. The Lester Flatt G run chapter felt like it was trying to pad a simple riff into a chapter. And the "boom-chick" rhythm chapters were a little bit repetative.
But then we get into the real meat of the book with fiddle contest accompaniment and all the chapters past that. This is where we seem some real insigt. There are some very nice chord substitution lessons. If you ever got sick and tired of playing thesame G and D chords over Salley Goodin (Or A and E7 since the version in the book is in the key of A) then you'll be happy to learn some very nice new chord sequences from that chapter. There's also some very nice Irish backup ideas.
Then we move into the flatpicking melody section. The fiddle tunes and cross-picking chapters in particular are quite good. At this point you're moving into intermediate to slightly advanced level techniques so be prepared to spend some practice time.
Normally, I can run through one of these String Letter "Essentials" books in a weekend. But this one has a bit more deapth than some of their other offerings. If you play acoustic guitar of any style, even if you're not a bluegras fan, I think you'll find something worth while in here.
Flatpicking Guitar Essentials.......2000-12-21
This book is put out in association with the people at Acoustic Guitar magazine. It was this fact that led me to look at this book. The lessons are clear and easy to follow which makes it good for beginning guitar players and intermediate players also. The CD that is included with the book is very helpful. Without it the book would not be nearly as helpful. There are several styles covered in the books 89 pages. Some styles easier to pickup than others. Overall this is a good book that will help you learn flatpicking technique.

The content is great, but it seems to be delivered with little patience. Each example is played so quickly. Even the slow tracks move quickly and they are only played once.
If you are a beginner I'd definitely say start elsewhere.

An Unlikely Source for Leadership Insights.......2006-10-31
My daughter is now a freshman at St. Louis University (a Jesuit school) and this book was her summer reading assignment. I was drawn to the book's title since I never would have characterized the Jesuits as a 450 year old company! Lowney's insights are compelling and the stories of the early Jesuit leaders are fascinating as an albeit biased glimpse of the early Catholic Church during the time of the Reformation. I kept waiting for Lowney to describe how he applied his learnings from the Jesuit seminary to his successful career at a major investment firm, but he does not. Perhaps he is applying the Jesuit philosophy of letting us figure that out! An excellent and thought-provoking guide to leadership in an age where ethics is sorely lacking...
Unlike any business leadership book you've read.......2006-08-18
For anyone who has been fortunate enough to have a Jesuit education or anyone who is just interested in what makes these guys tick, this book does a very good job of explaining the history behind the success of Jesuits. By historical example and modern stories, the author takes a step by step approach to applying the methods of the Jesuits to everyday leadership. I highly recommend this book.
Great on Several Levels.......2006-06-13
This book is a wonderful combination of Christian worldview thinking and leadership theory and practice. Where most works on leadership are a string of the latest findings and a set of statistical reviews, this work delves deeply into the lives as well as the practices of the Jesuits.
The many vignettes of Jesuits through the centuries and around the world were especially enlightening. Each story traced the successes and failures of several individuals and their ventures, and mapped them well onto the core principles of the Jesuit "company."
Of particular interest to me was the emphasis on "self-awareness." For the Jesuits this was not only a personal inventory of traits and talents, but of spiritual depth and maturity as well. Many readers of spiritual growth works will find this book exciting as the spiritual exercises of the Jesuits are tied directly to their world-changing influence. As mature Christian theology will tell us, growing deeper in our faith and walk with God changes our daily lives; spiritual discipline is not an esoteric exercise for purely personal gain.
The Jesuit backdrop for this book should not deter readers looking for good works on leadership and business theory. The author does not press Christianity to a point that might make others uncomfortable. There is a lot to glean from this work and from the Jesuits when it comes to leadership and good business practice-Heroic Leadership expresses it well and, in this reader's opinion, convincingly.

I AM VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE WRITER'S DEPTH OF THE HISTORY OF THE"COMPANY". I WISH I COULD HAVE READ THIS BOOK WHILE I WAS ATTENDING BOSTON COLLEGE , A JESUIT UNIVERSITY , SOME 44 YEARS AGO. I AM SURE IT WOULD HAVE MADE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN MANY OF THE EVENTS OF MY LIFE. NOW, I HAVE THE CHANCE TO SEE HOW I CAN FOLLOW THE TEACHINGS OF THE JESUITS IN MY LATER YEARS.
