Book Description

Philip V, who reluctantly assumed the Spanish throne in 1700, was the first of the Bourbon dynasty which continues to reign today. Philip's forty-six-year reign, briefly curtailed in 1724 when he abdicated in favor of his short-lived son, Louis I, was one of the most important in the country's history. This highly readable account is the first biography of Philip V in English.

Previous writing on Philip has been largely negative, dismissing him as comic, stupid, and indolent. Henry Kamen demonstrates here, however, that the king initiated significant developments in politics, imperial policy, finance, government, and the army that laid the basis of the modern Spanish state. Philip also encouraged literature, the creative arts, and music in ways that brought Spanish culture closer in touch with Europe, and he dealt authoritatively with issues concerning the autonomy of the provinces of Spain and the role of the monarchy itself. Drawing on both contemporary sources and fresh archival sources, Kamen discusses Philip's character, decisions, and policies. Kamen's account of Philip as king provides an essential introduction to the study of early eighteenth-century Spain and the Bourbon monarchy.

4 out of 5 stars Spain's First Bourbon.......2002-10-28

Kamen's biography of Philip V, which is the first English-language biography on this troubled soul for a long time, is an attempt at rehabilitation. In Philip's case, rehabilitation has its limits - for instance, the fact that he attended FEWER auto-da-fe's than his Hapsburg predecessors is hardly exculpatory. On the other hand, Kamen shows that Philip was a diligent man who, from the moment he arrived from Paris (he was French-born and indeed a grandson of Louis XIV), took his constitutional and religious roles extremely seriously, and withstood armed insurrection by the Hapsburg pretender, Archduke (later Emperor) Charles. Kamen also refutes the standard caricature of Philip as "dominated by women" and "tormented by desire for his wife." (He was uxorious! So what?) As to Philip's supposed "feeble-mindedness" and "madness," Kamen has the benefit of modern psychiatry, and as he explains, Philip's extravagant mood swings and melancholia are classic symptoms of manic depression. Finally, the title: he ruled "twice" not because of his supposed "madness," but because he abdicated in favor of his first-born son Louis, who then died only months later, leaving Philip to re-take the reins of power. A scholarly and impressive study of Spanish court life in the early eighteenth century.

5 out of 5 stars A new biography for a neglected king.......2002-05-21

Philip V is a king who is more often talked about than subjected to scholarly inquiry. His role in the war of Spanish Succession and his subsequent career on the throne and his second marriage have been the subject of numerous rumors and speculation. Henry Kamen's book rights a great wrong and restores Philip to the modern reader by subjecting his career and mental history to a modern sensibility. Philip's probable bi-polar disorder expalins a great deal about Philip's behavior Kamen's book is not only useful to the reader interested in Spain, but in 17th century European history in general.

4 out of 5 stars Was the King Crazy?.......2002-02-23

Was the King Crazy?

Mr. Kamen's book is not really a biography of the Spanish king. Rather, it is a diatribe against other historians who described Philip V as weak, mentally disturbed and a disaster for this country. The author does not see it that way.

Mr. Kamen explains that Philip suffered from manic depression and bipolar disorder. Could that be another expression for mentally unfit? While the king spent days and weeks in bed, screaming loud and messing up himself and his surroundings, the author claims that he was still of a composed mind and absolutely lucid. Philip's second wife, Elizabeth Farnese, took over the command of the kingdom, saying that she only acted on the instructions of her husband. Do we want to believe her? What we can believe is that, during Philip?s first marriage to Marie Louise of Savoy and even beyond, the affairs of Spain were run by the king's grandfather, King Louis XIV of France. Under Elizabeth Farnese, the French influence lessened and was supplanted by an Italian hegemony.

Given this very strong foreign influence, and the considerable power still exercised by the Spanish grandees, one could question whether or not it really mattered that much if Philip was always lucid or bipolar. Mr. Kamen may have lost the basis for his argument.

4 out of 5 stars A Royal Manic Depressive.......2001-11-21

As a history of the founding of the Boubon dynasty in Spain, I like this book. It's informative about the blood relationships of contenders for the crowns of Aragon and Castille a little more than a century after the Moors were defeated by Ferdinand and Isabella. The author describes the effect of Phillip's mental illness on political power, on family relationships, and on the formation of a centralized, Spanish administration. This is not a thriller of a book, but it teaches details one never hears about in school, for instance, about the role of marriages on treaties, territorial sovereignty and national identity, or about local versus centralized taxation to support royalty and nobility. It's a good thing that Phillip married strong, politically savvy and devoted women both times.

1 out of 5 stars REhabilitating a "sick" king.......2001-10-16

Kamen makes a fruitless attempt to "rehabilitate" the first Bourbon king of Spain, known as Philip V.
No matter how he might try, the author offers very little that could convince a reader that this man contributed anything of value that would obliterate the sorry record of achievements of the very wealthy nation over which he ruled.
Kamen tries to generate sympathy for this man by appealing to current psychiatric babble -- claiming that he suffered from "bipolar disorder." One might generate sympathy for anyone who developed the disordered psychological system that Philip had developed, if he were to be regarded simply as a human being. How can a modern author ignore the tremendous suffering and disorder that resulted from a society being convinced that such a man should rule over a vast empire? The contents of this book does demonstrate the kind of folly into which masses of people can be led by being induced to uphold the kind of reality that allowed a man like Philip to act as a figurehead for a nation that controlled vast wealth and resources.
Kamen, however, conveniently gives little attention to the tremendous suffering of the general public which resulted from a system which allowed a man who worked from a most unusual psycholgical system to remain as a figurehead of power for a nation that controlled vast wealth. Instead, he tries to insert -- between the descriptions of Philip's blatantly unsual pychological functioning -- tidbits which are supposed to generate sympathy and to convince the reader that this man actually accomplished useful functions during his long tenure as king of Spain -- 1700-1746.
This book might have been useful as a clear cut example of how a nation's citizenry can be led to engage in extremely unproductive and, ultimately, dangerous activity if they are first convinced to accept a set of basic constructions -- "the divine right of kings," "the power of the market place," etc. This man served as the figurehead for a power structure that steered Europe -- and The Western Hemisphere -- through vastly significant events. Though a historian can hold to the premise that he/she should not engage in "what if" writing, he/she can -- I would claim -- point out how people of a particular era had been "trapped" in their constructions.

Dr. Gary Solomon's Reel Therapy: How Movies can Help You Overcome Life's Problems is a great follow up to his The Motion Picture Prescription. The new book is longer, and has a helpful introduction based on answering the common questions Dr. Solomon was asked as he promoted the first book.

Reading Reel Therapy reminded me that understanding life isn't a destination, it's a process, and that I'm not alone in wrestling with childhood demons, and some very adult ones as well. Reading the review of The War at Home took me back to growing up in a neighborhood that was a war zone, memories I can never escape, but at least I can understand. Reading about Trainspotting took me back to my own need to be someone else, anyone else, for a few hours, at whatever cost.

Reel Therapy offered a stronger view of Dr. Solomon's own journey. For me, his background as a survivor means he knows what it's like to take that first step out of a dark box into a scary world.

I'm sure this book will help many take that first step.

Frances Densmore's Teton Sioux Music and Culture is one of the many volumes that resulted from her prolific life-long project to record and transcribe the traditional music of American Indian peoples. The book explores the role of music in all aspects of Sioux life, and is a classic of the descriptive genre produced by members of the Smithsonian's Bureau of American Ethnology.

Music serves as the vehicle for organizing this detailed account of traditional religion, warfare, and social life, enriched by first-person narrations by the Lakota men and women who worked with Densmore from 1911 to 1914 to preserve their songs by means of a wax cylinder recorder, the modern technology of that period. The evident quality of the narratives, translations from Lakota, as well as the complete transcription and translation of all the Lakota lyrics to the songs, resulted from Densmore's close collaboration with Robert P. Higheagle, who shared her dedication to the project and was an exceptionally capable translator and cultural mediator.

I was told by people in Wakpala, SD, that this is the best account of the coming of White Buffalo Calf Maiden. She came to the people who lived in this area of South Dakota, and the current residents are their descendents. When Frances Densmore came and asked to record their music and culture, the whole Tribe consulted and having heard of her reputation for honesty and integrity, they agreed to tell her the whole story of the White Buffalo Calf Maiden(Woman) and how she gave them the Sacred Pipe. And they told her all of their sacred rituals and songs. The scores and words are all here, interwoven with the text.

                                          5 out of 5 stars Simply stunning........2004-03-22

This book is one of the finest RPG products I have bought in nearly 25 years of gaming. It is a complex and detailed setting with great depth and immense possibilities. In fact, even if you never play a game in The Forge this book has enough ideas and immagination to be worth the price.

The setting supports every style of play, from backstabbing politics, warring kingdoms, vast wildernesses to explore, strange and arcane mysteries to uncover, winding underground complexes holding the secrets of lost civilizations. And this list isn't exhaustive.

But what about new game systems and mechanics? you might ask.. there are a slew of new prestige classes that open up even more options to adventurers, a passle of interesting new races to ADD to your games, and the crowning jewel: Prestige Races.

Prestige races represent physical transformation of your character as they aquire new traits to help them on their quests. WOTC was so delighted they optioned the idea for an issue of Dragon!

This setting plays to the best D&D has to offer, tailored to it's strengths and letting it's weaknesses fade into the background. The setting offers good reasons for all the expected adventure foils to be present. It is an interesting read even if you never play D&D.

                                          In short: Wow!

5 out of 5 stars This book was a great surprise........2003-10-11

I picked it up at a booth at Gencon last year. I started reading it during lunch and I couldn't put the thing down. This is a vast, complex, and massively detailed campaign world. Check the publisher's website if you want more information on the story... it has a fantasic metaplot and backstory to set your own adventures against and supports every genre and style of play, except perhaps the low level. The campaign is very high powered, so those who prefer low level, low power games will probably not want to use this setting. I will say, however, that as a fan of high level games, I've never once seen a setting geared towards high level play that is comparable to this one. This is a truly epic setting.

Highlights include an imprisoned god of unimaginable power and his servants, now cursed to become his jailers... a city with a population of 40 million with the most complicated (and awesome) politics I've ever seen, thousands of feet high built upon the ruins of previous incarnations of itself... a war torn desert with limitless riches buried beneath the sands... a pit of darkness miles deep that makes Ravenloft look like disneyland... lands, magical items, and beings drawn into the world from every other conceivable game world... and a grand conspiracy to hide the truth of the world from its inhabitants.

The reason it is $30 is because the book is dripping in full color artwork. It's gorgeous, and worth the price for the content alone. The eye candy is just a nice bonus. Pick up a copy at your local gaming store and just read the first few pages. It'll hook you. It is nothing like any other published campaign setting... it is far more rich and deadly than any I am familiar with... it has Ravenloft's evil, Dark Sun's grit, Dragonlance's epic feel, and the personality and familiarity of the Forgotten Realms, all in a mix that is entirely its own. The best part about it... the world is designed to have your characters ripped from any setting and thrown into the mix.

The catch is that you can never leave, although it is hard to imagine why anyone would want to.

                                          5 out of 5 stars A Truly Unique Book.......2003-02-08

Bastion Press has outdone themselves with this book. They have created a fantastic well-thought out setting with interesting character races, thought-provoking prestige classes and, best of all, one of the most unusual worlds ever to be created for D&D (Although it can potentially be used with any d20 game). In addition the artwork is very nice and complements the book well.
That being said, this book is not your typical D&D "medieval" setting. It has more of the feel of the old (out of print) role-playing game Skyrealms of Jorune in that Bastion Press has created a truly unique world.
It has a tiny flavour of Ravenloft in that characters are brought and imprisoned here, but it is not a horror roleplaying game otherwise.

Because it is so unique some people may not like it, but if you want something which is definately not your run of the mill "medieval" fantasy realm then give this book a try.

Veteran industry observer Joe Cappo briefly recaps the factors that impacted the industry in the late 1990s, and gives you advice on how to best position yourself, your work, and your business.

I don't get some of the comments (reviews listed). How can you say Cappo focuses too much on history? I wonder if anyone who thinks such a thing is really a media analyst ... I'm talking multiple regression analysis here, the past 100 years (weighted) of data that is made up of many variables and the outcome of each set. With this whe can assume a probability of what will happen before this year is out and future years (based on reasonable assumptions or trends).

That's statistical history and Cappo, though not mentioning regression, is using the theory (whether it's audience size, ad budgets, etc.)

Second, history is ethnography (the study of life stories of communities [generally speaking]), there is classical ethnography and there are many newer types such as usage ethnography. Sitting is people homes and watching how they watch TV etc.) If you think you know the history of advertising but you haven't used the above mentioned tools (and there are several more, sociology, psychology, women's studies etc.) THEN YOU DON'T KNOW ADVERTISING! - READ THIS BOOK! Unfortunately, if you read this book and you still don't get it, hook-up with some experts - not Joe Blow from the local print shop but Joe Cappo or someone as schooled. Alternatively, if you think you do know the history of advertising so well then why haven't you written a better book?

Now for some criticisms, TV dying... I'm not sure Joe actually said that. If he did say that, I think what he really meant to say was that TV is changing. If you don't read Joe's [former] rag, Advertising Age, then you are missing out. A major company (P&G?) announced two weeks ago it was repositioning its advertising towards TV!

Second, the end to commercials on TV? I actually believed without a critical thought that this was a reality. After discussing it with a colleague I was reminded of the all-time-greatest technical sore thumb, the flashing clock on the VCR. All the technology in the world isn't going to motivate someone to press more than one button. How can a society so trained in passive viewing (TV) be motivated to do more than press on, off, channel up, channel down? Fast-forward is about as complicated as most things get. But Joe seems sold on the idea that the top of the curve is going to change its behavior and enter the world of the early adopter/nerds? There needs to be a greater reward to alter behavior than not having to watch commercials. It took porn and free games to put computers or VCRs/DVDs in every household so I don't think the prospect of skipping commercials is a big enough reward for the first 95 percent of the curve.

Conclusion: I'd read this book five times if I had the time. IT IS insightful, especially chapter 11. I took about 22 separate notes from this book, so if you don't have time to read the whole book then read pages 30,32,36,37,45,46,47,49,51,52, 55,56,62,64,70, 160,206,227, and 228. I loved the insightful comment comparing Survivor and Abram Maslow.

If anyone has any opinions about what I have written I strongly encourage you to send me an email, I'd love to discuss advertising & marketing, especially how social sciences weigh in. We can probably help each other.

2 out of 5 stars title is deceiving.......2006-02-01

Looking for insight into the "future" of advertising, I decided to read this book. Makes sense given the title. Much of the book, ironically, is dedicated to the history of advertising. It gives little indication where things are headed other than they are changing. If you're not in marketing or advertising, maybe it's fresh and interesting. For those in this business, 95% of this book is "yeah, now tell me something I don't know."

5 out of 5 stars Will change but never die.......2005-07-02

Among the many fields in the business world I think advertising comes out as one of the most dynamic. It is a business where technology and the human capacity to create go hand in hand all the time. Radio did not eliminate press, tv did not eliminate press and radio and the internet will not eliminate any of the last three. All media channels will keep working together reaching different targets or adding critical mass to each other. The main change now is a consumer who has more power to decide and to influence products and services but advertising in itself will go on and on as long as there are products and services available to sell and consumers ready to buy in the free world.

                                          4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2004-10-13

Once considered a glamorous, creative and positive influence on American popular culture, the advertising business has changed so dramatically it is almost unrecognizable today. Veteran journalist Joe Cappo uses a personal approach and an historical perspective to explain the problems advertising is facing. Two decades ago, some 20 major agencies, all independent and competing against each other, developed innovative, memorable campaigns for a variety of consumer products. But those days are over. Today, four global marketing communications holding companies control 55% of marketing expenditures. This consolidation curtailed creativity, which has resulted in agencies that produce very few memorable ads or integrated marketing efforts despite unprecedented resources. Refreshingly, Cappo does not temper his industry critique in this slightly disjointed, but well-written explanation, which is buttressed by short articles from other industry experts. Cappo sounds a wake-up call for agencies to reform themselves or lose out to more effective marketing approaches from upstart independent agencies or product manufacturers.we suggest that anyone responsible for advertising budgets or for developing marketing campaigns will benefit from Cappo's view of the past - and possible future - of advertising.

5 out of 5 stars Best overall ad book on my shelf.......2003-08-12

I probably own over twenty books on marketing and advertising; weighty tomes written by the greats and near-greats. But Joe Cappo's crisply written new book is the best global overview I've seen yet. It clearly describes how the advertising industry has evolved dramatically over the past few decades -- and then speculates on the future twists and turns that may come to pass on the "advertising journey."

Will TV fade away and disappear? Of course not, and Cappo is the first to tell us that. But new ways of handling the challenges of commercial clutter (and of personal video recorders such as TiVo) must be innovated. Is the print medium at risk in the future? Perhaps, and that means newspapers most of all. (As this book points out, newspapers have a problem because they own their costly and inefficient printing presses, and are committed to an antiquated distribution system consisting of trucks rumbling through metropolitan areas to deliver their burdens to readers' doors.) The Internet, which came out of nowhere in the 90's -- and caught most advertising professionals flat-footed -- will continue to have a growing and enormous impact on consumers and businesses. (FYI, Cappo tells us that a study covering usage of all media forms revealed that by April, 2002 fully 25% of respondents were getting their daily dose of news ONLINE. Amazing.)

I'm sort of an old codger with a lot of years logged at advertising agencies. But Cappo's book makes me wish I were a kid of 21 again -- bright-eyed and launching into a career in the provocative and ever-changing world of advertising.

So if you're looking for an informative, entertaining, "short course" on the past, present and future of the ad biz, buy this book. I gave it 5 stars. (And I'd have given it 6 if Amazon allowed that over-the-top option.)
