Wonderful! William never looked better!.......1999-06-07
I really enjoyed reading The Journey to the throne. I was very please with the contents of this book. I thought it couldn't be more full of information about the king of our hearts. I hope Walters continues to write. She is very talented.
This is fun reading, but not very accurate........1999-03-16
This book is neither authorized nor endorsed by Prince William or the Royal Family, and I doubt very seriously that it would ever be endorsed by them. This book can be read easily in fifteen minutes or less. I bought this book ONLY because I collect books on the Royal Family.
The pictures of Prince William are great as in the one on page 28 which pictures him with her brother - Prince Harry, as well as, the one on page 35 with his brother and her father. All of these pictures have been in British magazines and in some American magazines to which I subsrcibe.
There's nothing new here except for the inaccuries. Everyone knows that Prince William is left-handed if one's has ever looked at his signing in at Eton while his mother, father, and brother watch. Prince William has many, many nicknames which have been given to him by his family and his friends but are not mentioned. If one has done any reading at all, the individual knows everything in this book and more. It is a known fact that Prince William is the most handsome Royal ever, that he is extremely intelligent, that her is very atheletic and excels in many sports, that he possesses his mother's charm and poise, and that he is artistic.
As I have said previously, I bought this book only because of my collection of books. This is one book which was written purely to make money. This is a paperback book
CONCISE BUT CEWL.......1998-07-29
I liked it very well. It did have more pictures than letters but does life really need a narrarator? I think for we right side of the brain people who read art and not silly little word soundtracks, it's a must have! Because the pictures explain his life and it is well formatted.
Good pictures, but not very accurate........1998-07-24
This book was just OK...it hardly had any words. I think that if you are only interested in William for his looks, and just want a "fan" book, you'd enjoy it. But, if your really interested in him as a person, you might not like it as much.
A very limited book that fills a specific niche.......1998-07-23
This book provides a very limited perspective on the life of the heir-but-one to the British throne. It adds no new pictures, and no new information about his life. What it does do, is to provide readers with a number of nice images of Prince William, which they may not previously have had access to.
It has been suggested in some circles that the interview quoted in the book was "faked". This is not correct. The interview was, in fact, a series of e-mail exchanges between a webmaster and someone claiming to be William. After some investigation, I am convinced that the exchanges were made in good faith by the webmaster. While it has not been proven that the person on the other end was William, neither has it been disproven. So, the jury is still out on this point.

Praise for the Second Edition
"Croteau and Hoynes have written the clearest, most comprehensive, and useful textbook I’ve seen on the media, American Society, and their interconnections. As sage as it is thoroughgoinga, it serves as an encyclopedic reference book as well as a cogent summation of what scholars know. My congratulations to the authors."
-- Todd Gitlin, Columbia University
"The most comprehensive and insightful book on the role of media in life and society. If students, scholars, and all those concerned about our culture had to pick one book to enlighten and inform them, this would be the book."
-- George Gerbner, Bell Atlantic Professor of Telecommunication, Temple University
In a society saturated by mass media, from newspapers and magazines, television and radio, to digital video projects and the worldwide web, most students possess a great deal of media knowledge and experience before they ever enter the classroom. What they often lack, however, is a broader framework for understanding the relationship between media and society.
Media/Society: Industries, Images, and Audiences provides that context and helps students develop skills for critically evaluating both conventional wisdom and one’s own assumptions about the social role of the media.
The first two editions of
Media/Society introduced thousands of students to a sociologically informed analysis of the media process. The
Third Edition builds on this success with revised Internet resources, the latest data on the media industry, new examples from the independent media sector, and updated discussions of media policy, online media, and independent media.
Media/Society is unique among media texts in that it offers:
- A sociological approach that examines overarching relationships between the various components of the media process—the industry, its products, audiences, technology, and the broader social world
- An integrated study of mass media that looks at media technologies, collective influences, and connections between mass media issues that are often treated as separate
- An examination of how economic and political constraints affect the media and how audiences actively construct their own interpretations of media messages
Media/Society: Industries, Images and Audiences, Third Edition engages the reader with accessible analyses that are historically grounded but draw upon current media debates such as regulation of the Internet, concentration of media ownership, portrayals of gays in the media, and the growth of global media. Media/Society an outstanding text for courses in mass media and sociology.

Life in all its strangeness.......2005-04-04
Unquestionably, the strength and courage shown by the modern day media has been the sole driving force in bringing forward the various viewpoints that would eventually change the world for better. It is like the words - "It sometimes takes a stranger for us to be able to look into justices' beautiful eyes". That is true at so many levels, both at an individual and personal level but also in terms of the relationship between the citizens of this world and the media. And therein lies the genesis of everlasting love as well, no matter how much doubt is cast by slander. However human nature is strange in that one often ends up hurting the most those that they actually love dearly. Words, in that context, are also strange since they can be sometimes be so vitriolic, if not being utterly cruel. There once was an ordinary man who sat in his home looking at his television screen, as if looking through it and asked for forgiveness and hoped that one day he would be forgiven by everyone he hurt. It was at times like this that he wished he could get himself to walk away from the television and return to his ordinary world of man and machines or even to his essence, not out of fear of retaliation but out of the pain he kept causing others. After all he was just a human being! He was such a person who could see the truth in every perspective and ideology and at the same time felt that the modern world would be writing its epitaph if it did not bravely face the reality of the every changing world. It was something as simple and pure as seeing the truth in the different ways of life chosen by different human beings who lived on this land even if he did not agree with all viewpoints. It is like being able to walk in every stranger's shoes and realizing that in essence some face of the ultimate truth shows itself no matter how different this truth looks at face value. It is analogous to the different faces of a diamond and that it would take a miracle to be able to see these myriad, if not infinite, faces of the same diamond in one glimpse. In this regard, the narrower the tunnel vision, the more mistrust there is against other viewpoints. That is the essence of life. Well, what can you say other than - "shine on you crazy diamond..."
your superego.......2005-03-07
Complete moral degredation of society, eh? Dimwit zealots interspersed with egotistical invaders of privacy and the silly immature masses of disgusting protoplasm seeking fun at others' expense, all trapped in the tragic duplicity and hypocrisy of their own self-glorified beliefs...the self-proclaimed intellectual class, the so-called saviors of modern society? Has the rabid journalistic and entertainment and advertising (aka the modern day devils) media gone berserk with no one around to save them from their mental illness except maybe their own slow but inevitable slide down into oblivion?
Shooting history on the wing.......2000-04-15
Media-disseminated messages flood our every waking second, affecting us in ways we often do not readily discern. Croteau and Hoynes take the reader on an exploration of these media forces in a sociological journey that walks then leaps from the birth of printed words for the masses to cyberspace for the individual. In the process, we learn a lot along the way. Not only about media, but, about ourselves. Unlike most college course texts in Media and Society (in sociology or journalism), "Media Society" is written in understandable English and is not ruefully Marxian in ideological slant. The work plays it straight down the middle. The authors' goal, to which they succeed, is to provide information that shows the complexity of social relationships in, around and through which information from all sources is sought and internalized by "receivers" then, through feedback, subtly affects the "senders" and subsequent messages as well. Surprisingly up-to-date in information, especially concerning the so-called New Media (a synthesis of current technologies, traditional entertainment programs-turned-political,and old news media). Croteau and Hoynes not only introduce the reader to the media mileau in society, they show how economics drive news coverage. At the same time they explain that media consolidations have not shrunk the markets as first feared, but have actually led--perhaps inadvertently--to an explosion of different, often smaller and more intimate media. The media pie, they attest, is growing bigger as the number of slices inexplicably increase. In later chapters, the authors do a commendable job acquainting the reader with communications theory, especially explaining how opinions are formed. My favorite chapter, given my predilections, are the chapters dealing with media and the political world (and the rest of the chapters in Part 4). The authors also enter the globalization fray by demonstrating not only how American pop culture is transforming traditional cultures (see Barber's McWorld v. Jihad for greater detail), but also how traditional cultures are influencing American pop culture in ways greater than we had intuited. Anyone interested in gaining a sense of how media is impacting his or her daily life and how we, as social beings, react to that impact, should certainly read this wonderful book.

In each of the four sections games, the authors cover the basics of play, the top 10 tips for winning, 10 essential practice hands, frequently asked questions, review questions and "Dear Tom" stories from readers about actual situations with 1983 World Champion, Tom McEvoy's answers. Light yet serious, with wisdom and a touch of humor, and spiced with anecdotes designed to teach a lesson.
Customer Reviews:
Great For Beginner Players.......2005-12-12
Mr. McEvoy's view on how to approach both internet or real-life games of either limit or no-limit Texas Hold'em would best benefit someone who has just started playing the game. McEvoy informs his reader on the basics: what kind of hands are good/bad, how to bet in many different situations, relative chances of making certain hands, reading bluffs, and how to act depending on your position at the table, whether it be your chip stack or seat location.
McEvoy suggests a very tightly played overall strategy of the game. He tells of no style of bluffing--a quintessential part of poker, especially Hold'em. If you sit around and play a tight game, which normally means playing almost no hands, you will eventually be blinded until you are short-stacked or sitting at the rail.
Enough with my displeasures--I believe this book, despite its few drawbacks, is an excellent guide to those just beginning in Texas Hold'em. Mr. McEvoy gives a good synopsis on starting hand strengths and weaknesses. He also gives great insight on the impact of position, or order of bet, at the table. He argues that position is everything--I agree.
The best part of this book is the section devoted to possible hands one may come across at the table. While one hand may be wise to raise with in late position may simply be a call- or fold-only hand in the early or mid positions.
The part of the book that helped me the most was the section devoted to learning your opponents. McEvoy wisely stresses that you must know or very quickly learn the tendencies of your opponent in order to come out on top. He teaches to always fall in with the speed of the game, but at the same time, play your game no matter what. His best advice--to me--is to stick with your game and style and do not stray from it whether you are the chip-leader at the table or the short-stack heads-up against anyone from novice to poker great.
This book seems to be most beneficial to novice players, yet there are a few key things that could be learned by a seasoned-veteran who gave this book a shot. Mr. McEvoy's book was both very informative as well as entertaining and even humorous at times.
A great book for beginners.......2005-04-05
I would recommend this book only if you've been playing hold 'em poker for a month max, or if you've been playing for a while and you keep loosing yet don't know why. The information here is basic, solid strategy that will prevent the novice from loosing all his money. It covers limit, no-limit, tournament and online play, therefore giving the reader a good basic foundation on all the most popular types of Hold 'em. It's also very inexpensive, a plus that's even more enticing for the beginning player considering the prices of most other poker books. But for intermediate players, this is pretty much information you already know intuitively.
To sum it up: A good, cheap, introductory strategy book meant for those who have just started playing the game.
Excellent for Novices. .......2004-09-21
This book is what it is. "Beat Texas Hold Em" is designed to give beginners a feel for the game and ideas for strategy and tactics. It succeeds wonderfully. Its price is very cheap which is something that cannot be said of many gambling books. The narration style is very clear and concise. There's nothing confusing in the least in its structure. McEvoy provides advice on how to play common hands and also addresses internet poker in a separate chapter. No, it won't say a great deal to the pros but for those of us initially grappling with the game it's well worth the price.
A Great Book for Texas Hold'em Beginners.......2004-09-11
This is a great book for beginner Texas Hold'em players. It is an easy, fast read, which is very entertaining and informative.
The early chapters talk about the basics and mechanics of the game: how the cards are dealt, posting the blinds and the proper hands to play. Here they also discuss betting and the various positions at the table (everything from being "under-the-gun" to being on the "button.")
Later chapters cover "Limit Texas Hold'em," which is the basic game you might play at home or in a poker room. Also, many of us watch poker on TV, and an entire chapter is devoted to that, talking about what really goes on. A chapter on online poker is very interesting, as thousands play online every day. In fact, I just won a mini-tournament using some of the inforation I learned from this book (1st prize - $25!!!!!).
The book concludes with a chapter on winning in tournaments, which explains how playing in those differs from just the regular game.
Each chapter contains practice hands and "Tom's Top Ten Winning Tips."
Again, a good book for the beginner. More advanced and/or experienced players will probably want something more in-depth.
Good luck...and may the flop go your way!

Excelente conditions.......2006-11-11
I received the book in excelents conditions and on time.
For sure I will ask for another book in the future...
Not a paperback copy.......2005-10-03
I was very disappointed with what I purchased. It is not a paperback of the textbook "Essentials of Managerial Finance". It is simply copies of all the powerpoint slides with some lines next to them. Most classes provide that for free anyways. It's not even a workbook with examples and text. I am not sure what it is for; i guess note taking. Unfortunatly, for that I have notebook paper.
Maximizing shareholder value.......2003-07-12
I used this book for a 500-level MBA finance class, and I have to admit I liked it. The first 3/4's of the book drive home the financial manager's objective: Maximizing shareholder value. It does this consistently, and actually got me (A Sales Manager) to understand why profit needs to take a back seat to value.
Like all introductory texts, it skimps a little on complexity. However, I truly have an appreciation now for finance. Many decisions my company makes now make sense. Though I have little need to apply financial concepts in my current job, I can give better `business reason' explanations to my reports when they ask. Which is why I began pursuing an MBA in the first place.
Enough to avoid Finance mistakes.......2001-01-29
This new edition of the classical title looks very informative and meaningful. Perhaps a little bit more strong in the mathematical treatment will provide the customers with a text more atractive. Anyhow, it is still a good text for beginners.
Dr. Guillermo E. Martinez.
Excellant materials for the study of finance........1998-10-08
The book is fairly easy to understand. Students with little or no background in accounting were able to grasp the subject and understand the material. Thoroughly enjoyed using the text. Would have liked to see a web site available to use with the book. The test bank was effective and a time saver. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone wishing to use up-to-date materials with which to teach the subject of finance. Can be used in both a regular semester and a condensed class.
