Book Description
In the spirit of Alvin Toffler's Future Shock, a social critique of our obsession with choice, and how it contributes to anxiety, dissatisfaction and regret. This paperback includes a new P.S. section with author interviews, insights, features, suggested readings, and more.
Whether weᱥ buying a pair of jeans, ordering a cup of coffee, selecting a long–distance carrier, applying to college, choosing a doctor, or setting up a 401(k), everyday decisions––both big and small––have become increasingly complex due to the overwhelming abundance of choice with which we are presented.
We assume that more choice means better options and greater satisfaction. But beware of excessive choice: choice overload can make you question the decisions you make before you even make them, it can set you up for unrealistically high expectations, and it can make you blame yourself for any and all failures. In the long run, this can lead to decision–making paralysis, anxiety, and perpetual stress. And, in a culture that tells us that there is no excuse for falling short of perfection when your options are limitless, too much choice can lead to clinical depression.
In The Paradox of Choice, Barry Schwartz explains at what point choice––the hallmark of individual freedom and self–determination that we so cherish––becomes detrimental to our psychological and emotional well–being. In accessible, engaging, and anecdotal prose, Schwartz shows how the dramatic explosion in choice––from the mundane to the profound challenges of balancing career, family, and individual needs––has paradoxically become a problem instead of a solution. Schwartz also shows how our obsession with choice encourages us to seek that which makes us feel worse.
By synthesizing current research in the social sciences, Schwartz makes the counterintuitive case that eliminating choices can greatly reduce the stress, anxiety, and busyness of our lives. He offers eleven practical steps on how to limit choices to a manageable number, have the discipline to focus on the important ones and ignore the rest, and ultimately derive greater satisfaction from the choices you have to make.

Read this Anti-dote to the information age insanity.......2007-07-24
Oh, My, Goodness. We who are embedded in consumer culture so need this book. It will take some time to put the lessons into practice but will be worth it. Think of all the leisure time, satisfaction, and fun we will have!
This is a fun read with an important message. In the style of Blink, the author shares studies and experiences and theory that all converge on one thing: We are not satisfied because we have to many choices.
Then he provides the anti-dote to being overwhelmed by the information age: "Satisficing"
This book could save relationships, as well as personal well-being.
I am now on the path to recovery. I am a recovering optimizer and on the way to being a satisficer!
This one is a must-read.......2007-07-02
Some parts get a little complicated for just a quick read. But, at 240 pages this is a a fun look at the societal and psychological issues we face.
The areas explored are summed up with the following:
"...our experience of choice as a burden rather than a privilege is not a simple phenomenon. Rather it is the result of a complex interaction among many psychological processes that permeate our culture, including rising expectations, awareness of opportunity costs, aversion to trade-offs, adaptation, regret, self-blame, the tendency to engage in social comparisons, and maximizing."
The last chapter goes on to highlight and explain how we can try to avoid these issues (regret leading to depression, leading to suicide; comparing to neighbors and having regret; post-decision regret). A lot of it has to do with accepting "good enough".
Again, I recommend the book because it may help you see your decisions a little differently. At the same time, it helps understand the psychology behind others' decisions.
The Real Deal.......2007-06-09
The book may look on the outside like a social, economic, or political critique. But it's actually addressed mostly to individuals, and probably belongs mostly in the self-help category.
Most books of this kind - even some good ones - have only enough interesting ideas to justify a sizeable magazine article. The authors of such books also usually overstate their case drastically by claiming that everything in the world that they don't like can be explained by the one insight that forms the premise of their book.
This book is an exception. It's not long, but that's largely because there's no padding. Schwartz uses several examples to illustrate his point that our modern, economically productive society has provided us with an unprecedented range of choices in areas of our lives where formerly we didn't have to even think hard to make a decision.
For me, one of the most thought-provoking and enjoyable things in the book was the inclusion of many creative and revealing psychological experiments which produced unexpected insights concerning how we make decisions, and what the consequences of the decision-making process are.
Schwartz makes a good case for his thesis that "choice overload" can have a wide range of negative results. And instead of delivering a political diatribe or social critique, blaming politicians or greedy corporations for all of these problems, he addresses himself primarily to his readers, and tells us what he thinks WE as individuals can do to ease the undesirable consequences of having to make too many choices.
The only part of the book I found unconvincing was when Schwartz argues that (1) when people have to make individual choices in too many areas of life, they then have to take responsibility for the results of those choices, and (2) people who take responsibility for most of the things that happen in their lives tend to be unhappier. I'm condensing his argument here, but he definitely does give the impression that he believes that. And I'm here to say that even if people who take responsibility for the results of their actions **are** unhappier, that's just tough. The last thing we need in our society is fewer people who take responsibility for the results of their choices. Just about every failure and every criminal that I have ever met, or known anything about, has REFUSED to accept responsibility for his or her choices - and that's why they're failures and criminals. If taking responsibility increases your stress level, well isn't that just too bad.
But that one disagreement doesn't prevent me from giving the book 5 stars. The book makes so many important points, and explains them so lucidly, persuasively, and non-ideologically, that I think everyone should read it.
A Great Book for Business Owners.......2007-05-15
I thought this book was most excellent. I took my time reading it but it still went fast. The opening about choosing jeans at the GAP really struck a chord with me. I have had the same dilemma and therefore I only buy two pairs of jeans every 2-3 years. It's confusing. On a business sense this has helped me with providing excellent customer care with AUDIN Web Design. The sense of past loss versus future loss/gains really helped me in my business. I am able to create a pricing model that is able to help my business as well make the customer feel comfortable., If you are a business owner, I suggest you take a look at this book. I've also used this book to evaluate my personal life. Have you been holding onto something because of some (ancient) intrinsic value? This book helped me realized that I have a lot of things that will cost me more in the long run than it would if I just tossed it out. That's the past loss.
Less is not always more.......2007-05-04
Schwartz has interesting insight and the book is easy to read. Though some readers may find that Schwartz's ideas are somewhat old fashioned, this is coming from a reader that appreciates the choices available to him. But still I must urge people to read this book because you will begin to look at the choices you make more criticaly than prior to reading The Paradox of Choice. I will admit even though I do not agree with all of Schwartz's theories his knowledge on the psychological point of view of choices are invaluable.

By a master, about a master .......2007-08-15
Wolf has yet to dissapoint me with his transcriptions and this is no exception. Grant, one of the best guitarists in history IMHO, is woefully under represented in the music book industry. I think he's had 2 songs transcirbed for guitar magazine, and this book are IT. And I think that's a crime. Especially considering Grant was Wes's main competition and that a huge chunk of the Blue note catalog has Grants name on it. Thanks Wolf, for bringing this sorely needed information to us.
Great Product.......2005-05-10
I think all enthusiasts of Grant Green should be grateful to Wolf Marshall for this product. GG's technique and musicality deserve great study and admiration. Thanks to Wolf Marshall's guide more and more people will be able to give it just that. The transcriptions are faultlessly accurate and the choice of tracks is excellent.

The Magnakai Climax!.......2001-06-04
This, being book 12 of the Lone Wolf series, and the final chapter in the plights of Lone Wolf in the discipline of the Magnakai, pits Lone Wolf once again against the Archlord of Darkness, one Lord Gnaag, supreme ruler of the Masters of Darkness. Lone Wolf returns from the Dazhiarn, an alternate world, only to find his enemies, the nemesis of the Sommlending, about to storm his very homeland! He must journey to infernal city of Heldgedad, the very stronghold and capital of the evil oppressors! Here chronicles one of the very best adventures Lone Wolf embarks upon, and you can bet it is one of the very best of the series, which curtails approximately 32 books long-and well worth reading every one!
Of all in this series, 'Masters' is most memorable.......2000-08-08
Lone Wolf Series fans will be delighted with #12 Masters of Darkness, as it supplies a much needed sense of closure to the "Magnakai" chapter in the series (noting that the series continues with at least 10 other books last I heard). I've followed the series from the start (Flight from the Dark)up to Legacy of Vashna and in my opinion, Masters of Darkness is the book I remember most vividly. Within it is the adventure in which Lone Wolf actually stops messing around and confronts all the major Darklords in a battle worthy of legend (even in terms of this series, it is a wonderful climax plot-wise). Highly recommendable, fun, and a must-have by fans for fans.
Absolute Success-Indubitable Masterpiece.......1997-04-11
It is hard to single out a Lone Wolf book in quality-they all share but one thing: their amazing breathtaking superbness. But one in particular does indeed rank superior to some of its predecessors and followers: The Masters of Darkness.
The thrilling conclusion to the Magnakai and Kai adventures, The Masters of Darkness transports the reader from ship to beast to places that lurk in the nightmares of Lone Wolf. The reader must fight the terrors of the Kaltersee, the new city of Argazad, and finally, smuggle himself to the Black City and make a stand for the future of the entire world of Magnamund. Along the way the reader encounters, in incredible prose, the darkest and most infamous creatures in the Lone Wolf series: the Masters of Darkness.
If you have read Lone Wolf books but not the Masters of Darkness, you haven't read Lone Wolf

A tale of a different kind of hero.......2002-07-25
As the previous reviewer mentioned this is the first of a series of novels by Rose Estes that are set in the Greyhawk Campaign setting. The series continues in "The Price of Power", "The Demon Hand", and "The Name of the Game". The series chronicles the adventures of the wolf nomad Mika-oba, who is the son the clan's shaman, and his wolf companion Tam-Tur. Mika is an extremely interesting character that kind of has the mentality of a sex-crazed hobbit. He wants to have the riches, women and glory, but doesn't like to work for it. His fate to takeover as the next shaman seems clear, even though he doesn't like the idea, but a raid on a passing caravan forever changes his life. The novel is fast paced and humorous and you'll love Mika's less than heroic attitude and his fun loving wolf. The ending is a strange one that will leave you wanting to know what will happen next. I recommend this novel to the lighthearted reader for a tale of a different kind of hero.
This book is very good for the fantasy beginner.......2000-02-04
As far as I can tell, this is the first book in a series of four written by Rose Estes for Greyhawk Adventures. This was the first fantasy book that I ever read. I would highly recommend this book to those of you that aren't familiar with reading fantasy. It is a good one for beginners. If you've already read the Lord of the Rings or The Wheel of Time, you'll probably think it to be a little less intellectually stimulating. However, this book is a very colorful beginning to an extremely entertaining four book saga.
D&D novel for the series reader........1999-01-02
Even D&D has spawned several series of novels. The Greyhawk Adventures is one of the better known (after the Forgotten Realms series).
Make sure you read the books in numerical order, they make more sense.

Great Read... Will Get you atleast a second interview!.......2007-08-31
After thumbing through this book I learned more in a few hours than I have in the last 6 months. Like previous reviews have stated its straight forward and to the point. There are a few do's and dont's that are common sense, but you must make that call for yourself. There are also a few suggestions the author made that I feel were slightly inappropriate for certain interviewing situations. If you are an individual with sound mind and judgment then this book will be your guiding light through the oh so dark tunnel of job hunting!!! Good Luck!
This book is a keeper.......2006-12-20
I liked this book because it gives well rounded view of what the interview process is like. Author tells you how to dress, groom and accessorize, prepare objective, make well thought out resume and smart cover letter. You will be thought on how to research the company, prepare for the interview, ask quesitons during the interview and finish with really smart follow up and thank you letter. Negotiation techniques and acceptance letter and great part of the process. Many reference books mentioned here are probably worth reading and I just may do that next.
Sorry, but it was disappointing for me........2004-04-22
I did not find ANY thing there that are new for me. All information was VERY basic.
Besides, I don't think that this book will help you with ANSWER to question "HOW to turn an interview into a job?".
If you don't have any idea about resume and interview I think it's probably better to buy:
1.) Resumes in cyberspace (about e-mail resumes and more);
2.) 10 insider secrets to job hunting success;
3.) Gallery of best resumes;
4.) How to knock `em dead (interview questions).
Also I found "Here is my card "book. I think some info there is interesting and useful.
Good luck!
The Best.......2003-12-04
I left school about 18 years ago armed with a copy of this book. The book helped me get offers or at least second interviews in about 75% of my attempts. From my experience, you'll do quite well in the interview if you take the author's advice. You'll actually feel positive energy flowing during the interview if you are using the techniques from the book.
Quick and Simple.......2002-03-12
...this short and sweet book ...[has]
tried and true concepts [that] will walk you through the critical
interview process, and send you on your way prepared and
confident. Once you have spent the time and effort it
takes to land an interview, Jeffrey G. Allen, in How to
Turn an Interview Into a Job will show you how to make it
count.
Let this no nonsense 12-step action plan be your guide. It
includes frequently asked and tricky questions, pro-active
answers, and some simple but valuable tips to demystify the
process. Keep Allen's list of action and buzz words handy,
so you can have what he calls a "winner's vocabulary".
Preparation is key, and Allen keeps it simple.
