        4 out of 5 stars Wicked Ernest.......2003-02-16

John Wardroper has chosen to tread on forbidden paths with "Wicked Ernest" and expose the 'Demon Duke' who was accused of incest, murder and, possibly, sodomy. He approaches the topic as a scholar, providing much documented proof and presents it in an easy to read, interesting book about the seldom heard of Prince Ernest, Duke of Cumberland, son of King George III. Extensive research is apparent throughout the work as, understandably, much of the evidence has been destroyed. I liked this book very much and recommend it to history buffs. Thanks, Mr. Wardroper.

I first purchased this book at Canyon de Chelly, in the heartland of Navajo country. I had read all Tony Hillerman had written, and I had witnessed a pow-wow on the Navajo reservation. This book is so readable, enjoyable, and comfortable that I have given it to many friends who are interested in the Southwest. It was a fantastic read for a very, very bright sixth-grader, and a fantastic read for several very birght 40-something readers. An excellent way to refresh and enhance your history of the Navajos.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book!.......2006-03-29

If you are at all a volleyball person, this book is required reading. It's that simple. Karch was called the best indoor player in the world and proved himself the best beach player as well. What's better than hearing the story of the greatest player the sport has yet known from his own lips?

5 out of 5 stars The Man With the Midas Touch.......2000-03-17

Karch Kiraly is simply the best volleyball player ever to play the game. So, of course, this read was very insightful, heartwarming, and humourous at times. I couldn't put my copy down at all. I have read it twice.

I say that Karch is the man with the "midas touch" because everything he touches is golden; his life with family and friends, the kind of role model he is to so many, and lastly for his volleyball accomplishments. It has been a pleasure to follow his career as well as read about his life in his book entitled, "The Sand Man."

I would encourage any volleyball fan to pick up this highly recommended book and to have it signed by Karch if they see him at an event soon!

Best of luck to Karch in the future and keep writing because your fans love it!

5 out of 5 stars An inspiration to an English player!.......2000-01-02

I knew this was to be my Xmas pressie this year and so it was frustrating waiting for the 25th! As soon as I unwrapped it I couldn't put it down; in the end my wife became annoyed and told me that I would get no lunch until I put the book away. This book is a great read with lots of bits and pieces. There are various inspiring stories that make me want to get down to a beach (yes we do have them in England) and restart training. Living in this volleyball deprived nation it's great to have something like this book to get me through the long and dark winter. Just buy the book it's fabulous! Write to me! volleyball@tesco.net

5 out of 5 stars The definitive Karch Kiraly book for all volleyball fans!.......1999-12-18

In basketball there's Jordan, in baseball it's Ruth, in Golf it's Nicklaus, auto racing's king is Richard Petty. In the world of indoor and beach volleyball one man stands alone at the top the mountain - that man is Karch Kiraly.

Karch Kiraly is the most decorated volleyball player in the history of the sport and at age 39, he's still the most feared name on the court. The Sand Man is the first book to truly capture this often misunderstood icon of the AVP.

From his first tournament at age 15 to the Atlanta Olympic gold medal in 1996, Karch Kiraly is truly the greatest player ever to spike a volleyball. I can not begin to say how great this book was.

Laced with stories and photos, this book is the tied for number one in my reviews of 1999. For the serious volleyball fan, this is the must read of the year. Best of luck in Sidney in 2000 Karch!

5 out of 5 stars An in-depth look at the vollyball legend.......1999-10-14

When most people tune in to watch the AVP, they often notice one thing - some guy out there is wearing a pink hat. The man underneath that hat is, undoubtedly, the greatest volleball player to ever step on the court (or the sand). This is the life story of Karch Kiraly and his accomplishments in life as well as on the court. Always a gentlemenly competitor, we get to see the few flare-ups and frustrations along with the glory of his storied career. Starting from birth and ending with last season's (1998) success with Adam Johnson, this book chronicles Karch's travels, his loves, the people he admires that came before, and his devotion to his children. A must-read for anyone who enjoys the sport and the man who has helped bring it to new heights.

Movie lovers would be well served if every film genre had a book devoted to it that is as loving and comprehensive as The BFI Companion to Crime. Editor Phil Hardy, who also oversaw the excellent Overlook encyclopedias of horror, science fiction, and Western films, has outdone himself with this volume. Teaming with the British Film Institute, Hardy has produced a volume that covers all aspects of the crime film. You'll find entries on every significant movie in the genre: classics such as The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, Chinatown, and Goodfellas; lesser-known works such as An American Tragedy, Raw Deal, Peeping Tom, and Mona Lisa; popular favorites such as Die Hard and Pulp Fiction; and foreign films from Les Vampires to Diva. Entries for each movie summarize and evaluate the film and provide a full list of credits.

The companion also covers the lives and careers of important pulp novelists such as Agatha Christie, Daphne du Maurier, and Elmore Leonard (whose books were frequently made into movie classics) and approaches the genre by subject. Entries on a variety of relevant topics include blackmail, drugs, Fu Manchu, homosexuality, Sherlock Holmes, and vigilantes. Perhaps the best feature of the book are the hundreds of photographs, in both color and black and white, that illustrate the volume. They are the most striking collection of stills you'll see in any movie book, and they collectively give a taste of the crime film's extraordinary visual richness. This superb companion is full of detail, yet is so accessible that it will delight both crime film aficionados and fans who are just getting acquainted with this deep genre.

                  Book Description

Robbers, gangsters, murderers, and criminals of every description have long been a staple of popular entertainment. Movies are no exception, and film buffs and scholars alike now have a complete guide to the vast array of films that make up the fascinating world of crime cinema. The BFI Companion to Crime offers detailed information on the sub-genres and motifs of movies dealing with criminals and their behavior: prison dramas, heist stories, kidnappings, the exploits of serial killers, juvenile delinquents, and hired guns. Phil Hardy also includes articles on the historical and social background of crime movies. The Mafia, the Japanese yakuza, the FBI, and the underworld of union rackets, prostitution, and drugs are some of the topics covered. Fictional characters such as Sherlock Holmes, Inspector Maigret, Philip Marlow, and Pretty Boy Floyd appear in these pages, along with the literary sources of many crime films. The works of Graham Greene, Dashiell Hammett, Mickey Spillane, and Eric Ambler are among those featured. Abundantly illustrated with more than 500 photographs, this is the book for film enthusiasts and anyone interested in the crime genre.

5 out of 5 stars Sociohistorical Survey of "Crime in Film" Genre.......2001-04-02

"There have always been crime stories," says Richard Attenborough, in his foreward to "The BFI Companion to Crime." Cinematic representations of crime and criminals are a worldwide phenomenon still in force after one hundred years. What editor Phil Hardy has done in his excellent reference book is to create an encyclopedic survey of the crime film genre from its "origins at a certain period in Europe in the late nineteenth century which saw the formation of an organised police force and the professionalisation of both the forces of law and the criminal . . . .[that] gave rise to a literature, of which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is the first great exponent, in which the process of investigation is paramount . . . ." Such an investigation, or "police procedural," did not concern itself solely with crime-solving: an apprehension of the criminal, or "alleged perp," occurred. This "apprehension" involved a physical detention for questioning, as a means of "apprehending" the psychological and social dimensions of crime and criminal. In other words, the evolution of the crime film genre brought about an exploration of minds and motivations of criminals that would no longer be hidden in literary detail.

"What then arose both in Europe and America during the 1920s," according to Mr Hardy, "were a series of representations of daring criminals (Fantômas, Dr Mabuse) and striking and highly popular recreations of the criminal underworld." The high energy of the Roaring Twenties during Prohibition, with its G-Men enforcers, produced the gangster film, a popular genre which initiated a "ripped from the headlines" approach to filmmaking that still persists today. A listing of these early gangster films would include: "Underworld" (1927), "Little Caesar" (1930), "The Public Enemy" (1931), and "Scarface" (1932). As the Depression of the 1930s wore on, people cheered gangsters in films and made them their folk heroes. After federal agent Melvin Purvis gunned down John Dillinger in 1934, the gangster film shifted into a subgenre; now cops and criminals would have double billing, and television entered the scene. (Fast forward to "The Untouchables," "The Godfather Trilogy," "Mean Streets," "Goodfellas," and "The Sopranos," to name but a few examples.)

This "Companion" artfully deconstructs the complex genre (or subgenre) of film noir that emerged in the early 1940s. These films noirs (and neo-noirs) have generated a cottage industry of critical and popular texts. While I do not concur with the editor's thesis of "the lethargy that was film noir," I believe he presents quite valuable insights to the genre.

Several sociohistorical factors came into play at the beginning of the 1940s: America's involvement in World War II; the resurgence of the American economy concomitant with Rosie-the-Riveter's replacement of men in the workplace; and the shifting roles of women and men ("Mildred Pierce"). Soon, contrasting and overlapping images of overworld and underworld intruded into film: "police were expected to be corrupt and the man running the nightclub was expected to be a criminal" ("The Big Sleep" and "Murder My Sweet"). With the appearance of " 'femmes fatales,' preying on confused males" in these films, Hardy sees "languidity" and "lack of masculine energy" in this subgenre: ". . . the way a (wo)man held a cigarette was as important as the way (s)he held a gun."

Films of the 1930s and 1940s also illustrate the influences of Freudian psychology and psychoanalysis, and of German Expressionist artists and filmmakers. "John Huston's 'The Maltese Falcon' (1941), adapted from Dashiell Hammett's novel and one of the earliest 'films noirs,' is a convenient starting-point from which to examine changes in the narrative strategies of the crime film . . . ." The 1950s highlighted "the importance of the crime writer to the crime film." Preceded by a few pages of color photos from contemporary crime cinema, the extensive glossary includes entries of many of these writers (e.g., James M. Cain, Raymond Chandler, and Elmore Leonard).

"The BFI Companion to Crime" is a fascinating and up-to-date reference for the "crime film" genre. After spending time with Attenborough's gossipy foreward and Hardy's informative, opinionated, and rambling introduction, one might even read the rest from cover-to-cover. One drawback is the lack of an index and appendixes: no filmography or bibliography. However, the book is cross-referenced in bold type and displays several b & w photos per page.

While there are many subgenres of the crime film genre, not all films with crimes are considered here, such as horror films and Westerns because they are considered by most film viewers, scholars, and critics to be separate genres. Film buffs may argue endlessly on what constitutes a genre or subgenre in film, with collateral agreements and disagreements as to the catergorisation of which film belongs in what genre or subgenre. Thus, I consider this book to be an invaluable reference for the crime film buff.

She may be smart, incisive, witty, and keenly observant but with the release of Are Men Necessary?--a series of pithy (some might say piqued) ruminations on the sexes--Maureen Dowd will never, ever be championed by guys. Not that she cares. Even those who seek to avoid her columns in the august pages of The New York Times are certain to stumble over her invective in syndication. Dowd, it often seems, is everywhere. So those seeking even more via this book should be warned: Are Men Necessary? not only asks the eponymous question; it seeks to answer it with myriad examples (some convincing, some not) drawn from the Toronto Star to Kenneth Starr, from Cosmopolitan to Condoleezza Rice. You can bet a lot of folks aren't going to relish the answer.

With hands on hips and eyes wide open, Dowd surveys gender relations in contemporary settings such as the workplace, the White House, the mall, and the media, comparing and contrasting as she goes. And while her secondary sources are endless--and, let's face it, the subject of gender inequality is not exactly new--Dowd manages to produce a fair share of bons mots. To wit, this pearl on the subject of plastic surgery and men: "I have yet to see a man come out of cosmetic surgery without looking transformed into some permanently astonished lesbian version of himself," Dowd quotes a source as saying. "It's terrifying. My friend's father had just his eyes done by the best, most highly sought-after cosmetic surgeon in New York City. And he doesn't look refreshed or well rested. He looks like he's being stabbed to death by invisible people." Dowd's generously dispersed anecdotes, though seldom as funny, are equally readable. In the end, though, one wishes Are Men Necessary? went beyond simply grocery listing examples of sexual disparity to offer concrete suggestions for change. Then again, maybe that's too great a task even for a woman like Dowd. --Kim Hughes

                    Book Description

Are men afraid of smart, successful women? Why did feminism fizzle? Why are so many of today's women freezing their faces and emotions in an orgy of plasticity? Is "having it all" just a cruel hoax?

In this witty and wide-ranging book, Maureen Dowd looks at the state of the sexual union, raising bold questions and examining everything from economics and politics to pop culture and the "why?" of the Y chromosome. These new writings will delight her devoted readers-and anyone trying to sort out the chaos that occurs when sexes collide.

1 out of 5 stars Is Maureen Dowd necessary? When ignorance and arrogance collide.......2007-09-11

To answer Dowd's question, one need only consider that half of all the people you know would not be alive today if it were not for the medical marvels invented by this unnecessary sex, just to look at a single area revolutionized by male creativity and ingenuity, those gifts that CANNOT be learnt parrot-fashion by the ungifted, no matter how hard they try. Let all of us who are grateful that half of our friends and family are alive and not dead express our posthumous gratitude to the men who saved us from the disaster of midwifery (50% mortality rate achieved by these Einsteins until finally men were allowed to participate, and a MAN came along, inventing the necessary equipment and techniques within decades, and teaching his life-saving techniques to these ungrateful wretches, who had only had six millennia to learn to do their job properly.) Thank you Peter Chamberlen, that every baby born feet forwards today is not condemned to die along with its mother like when women ruled midwifery. Dowd and half of her friends and family would not be with us today if these unnecessary men hadn't helped these ignorant women understand how their own bodies worked. If she would gladly accept the loss of all these people from her life, then I fully respect her decision that men are not necessary. If however, she has gladly made use of the medical wonders, from childcare to cancer treatment, that exist only through the genius of the male sex, then I call her an ungrateful, female chauvinist pig of the lowest kind, whose drivel can only be of appeal to those in a similar IQ range. Go away and make room for someone with something useful to say. And see how many days you can get by without making use of any inventions created by the unnecessary sex. I promise to do the same with female inventions.

1 out of 5 stars Is ANYONE Necessary?.......2007-09-02

That's a totally irrelevant question and book title. No one is necessary; because God made man and woman for his own pleasure and desire. We're here because God wanted us here. Plain and simple. Secondly, women would not exist on the earth without men. No women ever born on the earth got here without a man. The first person on earth was a man and everyone else came from him.

5 out of 5 stars A interesting title and lots of real good information.......2007-09-01

I listen to the book on DVDs. The author is a well know columnist. Her insighted to famous and infamous people of our world is very interesting.

She has to be a real woman, who enjoys being a woman and her wit and insight is very enlightening to all who read this intriguing collections of observations.

A must read for women of all ages, it tell the tale of wanting something and then when we have it the repercussions of having is not all that good.

1 out of 5 stars "new" doesn't always mean new.......2007-07-31

Even though I ordered the item "New" from amazon, the book was obviously used, with wear on the binding.

3 out of 5 stars She needs to get...a better love life.......2007-05-27

To quote Ms. Dowd, "if a man writes a scathing piece...no one accuses him of hostility toward men. If a woman writes the same scathing piece" people suggest that her criticism is a reflection of some psyschological problem. She is better about men. "She needs to get...a better love life."

I looked forward to Dowd's first real book, having read her columns for the past several years. Unfortunately, you can't help but believe that Dowd's tone and perspective are heavily influenced by the fact that she is an accomplished, attractive, 50 year old woman, still looking for a date!

The book is fun to read and funny as well, though at times the reader is wondering what the actual point or purpose of the book is. Is it criticism of male-female relations? Is it satire of modern sex? Or is it Ms. Dowd's medium for venting her frustration??

Its hard to really find the point of the book, which at times reads more like a bold-faced names Social column than the work of a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist. Dowd seems to quote only her friends in journalism when supporting her points and whatever TV shows she's happened to watch (Seinfeld and Sex and the City, for instance).

While the book is fun and amusing, I can't say I walked away having learned anything or having gained a greater appreciation for male-female relationships.

... The beauty is Guerilla Marketing falls within the standards of using multiple Amazon.com accounts to create very convincing and completely flattering reviews of books so that you sell more of them.

Bit of paradox, be warned about books with such flawless ratings.

BTW I'm a marketing manager --- I eat this sort of stuff up. In fact for *some reason* this book appeared in my search results while researching a semi-fraudulent search engine company. Cheers and I'd suggest you save your cash and watch more Geico commercials! =)

Once you understand what Guerrilla Marketing is all about by reading the bestseller by the same author, this is one of many other books in the series that will benefit you tremendously! To summarize what Guerrilla Marketing is all about - it is for business owners who want to use their time, energy and imagination rather than dollars to achieve their marketing goals.

This short 200 page book has 50 rules that small businesses need to follow to succeed. It feels like they are all based on common sense as you read through the rules. The book backs up the rules with good data and solid explanations. That's what sold me on a lot of the rules. I am still not so sure about a few rules but maybe as I start implementing the others, I will realize the value of the others.

As an example, here's rule # 17: 'Be sure your timing is on; the right marketing to the right people is only right when the timing is right'. It sounds like common sense and it is but the 10 tips that follow in this chapter on how to implement this rule are very valuable. This is what got me hooked on the rules in this book.

The 50 rules are divided into 4 parts - Golden Rules to Guide your Thinking, to Guide your Effectiveness, to Guide your Marketing Materials, and to Guide your Actions. My favorite rule is part 4, it is rule # 41: 'It is wise to aim to be first in line when your prospect buys, but it is more profitable to be second in line'. When I thought of the number of times that my primary choice of product or service was not able to provide good enough quality that I ended up becoming a loyal customer of my second choice is what made me take notice of this rule. In this chapter, 20 tips are shared that help take advantage of this long term strategy that is difficult for most Guerrillas that are strapped for cash.

Bottom line - if you have enjoyed some of the other books in this series, you won't be disappointed with this one. Good luck!

It used to be that I couldn't put this book down. It was on point and insightful and really helped me start my business. But that was before a friend handed me Guerrilla PR Wired by Michael Levine. It was brilliant and current and the methods were spot on. Theories such as the Magoo Theory helped me to really zone in on why certain techniques work and why others don't. I couldn't go back to Guerrilla Marketing Excellence after that.

This is one of my all time favorite marketing books. I often refer to it time and time again. A MUST read for every business owner, manager and entrepreneur!...

5 out of 5 stars I made miracles happen using this book.......2000-04-23

This book as well as the other Geurrilla marketing books by Levinson adjusted my entire concept of thinking as a businessman and I made miracle happen as a result. Levinson really sifts out a lot of nonsense of marketing tactics, and gives you one atomic weapon after another to really launch an effective attack on the marketplace and hold a position. It was a book of continuous eureka's for me as I read. I suggest keeping a notepad handy as you read because your bright ideas will begin to explode one after the other and you will want to record them for later use. This book is entirely loaded with data. I recommend it for everyone with a desire to be successful in business.
