The Man With the Midas Touch.......2000-03-17
I say that Karch is the man with the "midas touch" because everything he touches is golden; his life with family and friends, the kind of role model he is to so many, and lastly for his volleyball accomplishments. It has been a pleasure to follow his career as well as read about his life in his book entitled, "The Sand Man."
I would encourage any volleyball fan to pick up this highly recommended book and to have it signed by Karch if they see him at an event soon!
Best of luck to Karch in the future and keep writing because your fans love it!

The definitive Karch Kiraly book for all volleyball fans!.......1999-12-18
Karch Kiraly is the most decorated volleyball player in the history of the sport and at age 39, he's still the most feared name on the court. The Sand Man is the first book to truly capture this often misunderstood icon of the AVP.
From his first tournament at age 15 to the Atlanta Olympic gold medal in 1996, Karch Kiraly is truly the greatest player ever to spike a volleyball. I can not begin to say how great this book was.
Laced with stories and photos, this book is the tied for number one in my reviews of 1999. For the serious volleyball fan, this is the must read of the year. Best of luck in Sidney in 2000 Karch!

The BFI Companion to Crime
Manufacturer: University of California Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0520215389 |

Movie lovers would be well served if every film genre had a book devoted to it that is as loving and comprehensive as The BFI Companion to Crime. Editor Phil Hardy, who also oversaw the excellent Overlook encyclopedias of horror, science fiction, and Western films, has outdone himself with this volume. Teaming with the British Film Institute, Hardy has produced a volume that covers all aspects of the crime film. You'll find entries on every significant movie in the genre: classics such as The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, Chinatown, and Goodfellas; lesser-known works such as An American Tragedy, Raw Deal, Peeping Tom, and Mona Lisa; popular favorites such as Die Hard and Pulp Fiction; and foreign films from Les Vampires to Diva. Entries for each movie summarize and evaluate the film and provide a full list of credits. The companion also covers the lives and careers of important pulp novelists such as Agatha Christie, Daphne du Maurier, and Elmore Leonard (whose books were frequently made into movie classics) and approaches the genre by subject. Entries on a variety of relevant topics include blackmail, drugs, Fu Manchu, homosexuality, Sherlock Holmes, and vigilantes. Perhaps the best feature of the book are the hundreds of photographs, in both color and black and white, that illustrate the volume. They are the most striking collection of stills you'll see in any movie book, and they collectively give a taste of the crime film's extraordinary visual richness. This superb companion is full of detail, yet is so accessible that it will delight both crime film aficionados and fans who are just getting acquainted with this deep genre.
Book Description
Robbers, gangsters, murderers, and criminals of every description have long been a staple of popular entertainment. Movies are no exception, and film buffs and scholars alike now have a complete guide to the vast array of films that make up the fascinating world of crime cinema. The BFI Companion to Crime offers detailed information on the sub-genres and motifs of movies dealing with criminals and their behavior: prison dramas, heist stories, kidnappings, the exploits of serial killers, juvenile delinquents, and hired guns. Phil Hardy also includes articles on the historical and social background of crime movies. The Mafia, the Japanese yakuza, the FBI, and the underworld of union rackets, prostitution, and drugs are some of the topics covered. Fictional characters such as Sherlock Holmes, Inspector Maigret, Philip Marlow, and Pretty Boy Floyd appear in these pages, along with the literary sources of many crime films. The works of Graham Greene, Dashiell Hammett, Mickey Spillane, and Eric Ambler are among those featured. Abundantly illustrated with more than 500 photographs, this is the book for film enthusiasts and anyone interested in the crime genre.Customer Reviews:
Sociohistorical Survey of "Crime in Film" Genre.......2001-04-02
"What then arose both in Europe and America during the 1920s," according to Mr Hardy, "were a series of representations of daring criminals (Fantômas, Dr Mabuse) and striking and highly popular recreations of the criminal underworld." The high energy of the Roaring Twenties during Prohibition, with its G-Men enforcers, produced the gangster film, a popular genre which initiated a "ripped from the headlines" approach to filmmaking that still persists today. A listing of these early gangster films would include: "Underworld" (1927), "Little Caesar" (1930), "The Public Enemy" (1931), and "Scarface" (1932). As the Depression of the 1930s wore on, people cheered gangsters in films and made them their folk heroes. After federal agent Melvin Purvis gunned down John Dillinger in 1934, the gangster film shifted into a subgenre; now cops and criminals would have double billing, and television entered the scene. (Fast forward to "The Untouchables," "The Godfather Trilogy," "Mean Streets," "Goodfellas," and "The Sopranos," to name but a few examples.)
This "Companion" artfully deconstructs the complex genre (or subgenre) of film noir that emerged in the early 1940s. These films noirs (and neo-noirs) have generated a cottage industry of critical and popular texts. While I do not concur with the editor's thesis of "the lethargy that was film noir," I believe he presents quite valuable insights to the genre.
Several sociohistorical factors came into play at the beginning of the 1940s: America's involvement in World War II; the resurgence of the American economy concomitant with Rosie-the-Riveter's replacement of men in the workplace; and the shifting roles of women and men ("Mildred Pierce"). Soon, contrasting and overlapping images of overworld and underworld intruded into film: "police were expected to be corrupt and the man running the nightclub was expected to be a criminal" ("The Big Sleep" and "Murder My Sweet"). With the appearance of " 'femmes fatales,' preying on confused males" in these films, Hardy sees "languidity" and "lack of masculine energy" in this subgenre: ". . . the way a (wo)man held a cigarette was as important as the way (s)he held a gun."
Films of the 1930s and 1940s also illustrate the influences of Freudian psychology and psychoanalysis, and of German Expressionist artists and filmmakers. "John Huston's 'The Maltese Falcon' (1941), adapted from Dashiell Hammett's novel and one of the earliest 'films noirs,' is a convenient starting-point from which to examine changes in the narrative strategies of the crime film . . . ." The 1950s highlighted "the importance of the crime writer to the crime film." Preceded by a few pages of color photos from contemporary crime cinema, the extensive glossary includes entries of many of these writers (e.g., James M. Cain, Raymond Chandler, and Elmore Leonard).
"The BFI Companion to Crime" is a fascinating and up-to-date reference for the "crime film" genre. After spending time with Attenborough's gossipy foreward and Hardy's informative, opinionated, and rambling introduction, one might even read the rest from cover-to-cover. One drawback is the lack of an index and appendixes: no filmography or bibliography. However, the book is cross-referenced in bold type and displays several b & w photos per page.
While there are many subgenres of the crime film genre, not all films with crimes are considered here, such as horror films and Westerns because they are considered by most film viewers, scholars, and critics to be separate genres. Film buffs may argue endlessly on what constitutes a genre or subgenre in film, with collateral agreements and disagreements as to the catergorisation of which film belongs in what genre or subgenre. Thus, I consider this book to be an invaluable reference for the crime film buff.

Are Men Necessary?: When Sexes Collide
Maureen Dowd Manufacturer: Berkley Trade ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:

She may be smart, incisive, witty, and keenly observant but with the release of Are Men Necessary?--a series of pithy (some might say piqued) ruminations on the sexes--Maureen Dowd will never, ever be championed by guys. Not that she cares. Even those who seek to avoid her columns in the august pages of The New York Times are certain to stumble over her invective in syndication. Dowd, it often seems, is everywhere. So those seeking even more via this book should be warned: Are Men Necessary? not only asks the eponymous question; it seeks to answer it with myriad examples (some convincing, some not) drawn from the Toronto Star to Kenneth Starr, from Cosmopolitan to Condoleezza Rice. You can bet a lot of folks aren't going to relish the answer. With hands on hips and eyes wide open, Dowd surveys gender relations in contemporary settings such as the workplace, the White House, the mall, and the media, comparing and contrasting as she goes. And while her secondary sources are endless--and, let's face it, the subject of gender inequality is not exactly new--Dowd manages to produce a fair share of bons mots. To wit, this pearl on the subject of plastic surgery and men: "I have yet to see a man come out of cosmetic surgery without looking transformed into some permanently astonished lesbian version of himself," Dowd quotes a source as saying. "It's terrifying. My friend's father had just his eyes done by the best, most highly sought-after cosmetic surgeon in New York City. And he doesn't look refreshed or well rested. He looks like he's being stabbed to death by invisible people." Dowd's generously dispersed anecdotes, though seldom as funny, are equally readable. In the end, though, one wishes Are Men Necessary? went beyond simply grocery listing examples of sexual disparity to offer concrete suggestions for change. Then again, maybe that's too great a task even for a woman like Dowd. --Kim Hughes

The Beauty of Guerrilla Marketing.......2004-09-16
After reading 'Guerrilla Marketing', follow up with this one.......2003-10-16
This short 200 page book has 50 rules that small businesses need to follow to succeed. It feels like they are all based on common sense as you read through the rules. The book backs up the rules with good data and solid explanations. That's what sold me on a lot of the rules. I am still not so sure about a few rules but maybe as I start implementing the others, I will realize the value of the others.
As an example, here's rule # 17: 'Be sure your timing is on; the right marketing to the right people is only right when the timing is right'. It sounds like common sense and it is but the 10 tips that follow in this chapter on how to implement this rule are very valuable. This is what got me hooked on the rules in this book.
The 50 rules are divided into 4 parts - Golden Rules to Guide your Thinking, to Guide your Effectiveness, to Guide your Marketing Materials, and to Guide your Actions. My favorite rule is part 4, it is rule # 41: 'It is wise to aim to be first in line when your prospect buys, but it is more profitable to be second in line'. When I thought of the number of times that my primary choice of product or service was not able to provide good enough quality that I ended up becoming a loyal customer of my second choice is what made me take notice of this rule. In this chapter, 20 tips are shared that help take advantage of this long term strategy that is difficult for most Guerrillas that are strapped for cash.
Bottom line - if you have enjoyed some of the other books in this series, you won't be disappointed with this one. Good luck!
