Book Description
The Diary of the Lady Anne Clifford is historical biography spanning nearly nine decades of some of the most interesting times in English history. Lady Anne's life experiences included the reign of Queen Elizabeth, King James I, Charles I, Lord Protectors Oliver and Richard Cromwell with an ultimate return to the monarch under Charles II. Anne Clifford's early years were influenced through virtuous restraint by a severe and ever present mother, but colored by the fables of an adventurous and almost legendary father. Her childhood developed in a background of feudal castles and estates in the north, while in the south, she lived among cousins and stately aunts with the extraordinary figure of Queen Elizabeth weaving majestically in and out like an intriguing thread. Exposed to the culture and savoir-faire of the London court, which included the likes of Ben Johnson and William Shakespeare, she preferred a life in the north of England and the administration of her father's estates. Yet, Lady Anne's story is one of suffering and endurance: from the time of King James rule through Charles II she struggled against those who would relieve her of her inheritance and outlasted them all. After more than four-hundred years, Lady Anne's image comes down to us in the form of a sad figure, looking as a ghost who somehow searched for a comforted soul, but managed consolation only by religion and charity.

Book Description
An authoritative, collated version of the Mansfield script charts the evolution of his play through its Boston, New York, and London productions. Biographical information is presented for Mansfield, Thomas Russell Sullivan, who worked with Mansfield to adapt the novel into a play, and Stevenson. Special attention is given to American theater and popular entertainment during the late nineteenth century, and to the Jack the Ripper murders, which led to the closing of Mansfield's London production.
Appendices include competing scripts staged by Daniel Bandmann and H.B. Irving, as well as reviews of the various productions, transcripts of Mansfield interviews, and excerpts from early biographies of Richard Mansfield.

A book long overdo........2005-03-29
Mr. Chisholm's book on the theatrical Jekyll and Hyde is long overdue. For over a century, theater and film readers have heard how the great actor Richard Mansfield's creation of Mr. Hyde, on stage, was mesmerizing. Here at last are the supporting facts.
The book is filled with reviews, annotations, and THREE scripts of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson tale.
Mr. Chisholm's exhaustive research is much appreciated.
Now if I could only get someone to mount a new production of this show for me....

Customer Reviews:
The Underground Guide To Las Vegas.......2007-04-05
Was very objective and interesting to read. A lot of information in a small book.
Finishing what the tiger started.......2006-07-01
I grew up in Vegas and still find this book useful. Keene did his homework. And more than that, he gathered an amazing roster of contributors. I mean, who better to guide the traveling drunkard through the liquor-lined streets of Vegas than the city's top boozer himself, Seth Barkan.
Not only is this book useful, it's smart, witty and fun to read.
This book could what finish what the tiger started: Wipe Siegfried and Roy's Vegas off the map.
In a word, a RIPOFF.......2006-04-13
This book is more like an expanded, cheaply produced pamphlet than a real guidebook. It's small, insubstantial, poorly produced, and has little useful information compared to the other guidebooks I consulted. It has the feel of amateurish reviews from underground or college newspapers. This book would probably be rather useful if you want to connect with the Las Vegas gay community, or if you're moving to L.V. to attend college, or if you wish to pick up prostitutes, or if you are into binge drinking on a budget.
I did appreciate the information on coffee shops and bookstores. Other than that, there is little here for the tourist who just prefers to stay off the beaten track.
The Real Deal.......2005-05-06
I went to Vegas twice and was very frustrated trying to find the real fun hidden beneath all the tourist ugliness. I wanted someone to write exactly this book, and that's exactly what I got. It's well-written, funny, sharp and perceptive. Now I actually want to go back, and do it right the next time. This book is worth every penny and many more.
Sensationally sleazy and cleverly-written.......2005-05-05
If you are a visitor or new Las Vegas resident this sensationally sleazy and cleverly-written book clues you into many hidden treasures of Sin City, from peep shows and pawn shops to thrift stores and topless transvestites. But it doesn't stop there, even lifetime residents seeking an out-of-the-ordinary experience will likely be intrigued by places they haven't visited yet.
Our oasis in the desert is flowing with an ocean of booze and the extensive dive bar chapter includes a tutorial on drinking for free and a Bar Etiquette guide before plunging into the depths of alcoholism. Long-term denizens of the darkside will likely laugh out loud when they encounter the establishment that "will earn you a 'Tom Waits/Charles Bukowski Citation for Daring While in Pursuit of Drunkenness.'" Buy the book if you want to know more.
The music section succinctly details venues ranging from The Aristocrat to Tailspin before launching into the best local acts of all genres, along with helpful hints and contacts for touring bands hoping to book a show in Vegas.
Sure, the guide isn't perfect; Alonzo the horse hasn't been in the Double Down Saloon for years, the Lied Children's Museum is curiously unmentioned, as is my favorite neighborhood watering hole The Dispensary, but I have to admit I'm slightly biased due to the lavish praise bestowed on my own efforts to promote the indie music scene via SinCitySounds.

Beyond the voyages of Cook; examine the brushing of cultures.......2004-09-29
When an anthropologist writes history one expects a differant perspective. Still, I was stunned by the insight Ms. Salmond exhibited. Most surprising is how densely this book is filled with small, "throwaway" insights that reveal the nature of Georgian England, the impact of the Enlightenment and even the impact of a society, like our own, where the division of wealth has become so radical.
Most important though, is that this book reveals how the nation of New Zealand has remained a Polynesian country despite its population being overwhelmingly of European descent.
spanning the cultural divide.......2003-12-02
Salmond's superb account of Cook's Pacific exploration tells the story from the perspectives of both Europeans and Polynesians. It places Cook as a 'player' in the islands' internal intrigues and power struggles, especially of the Maori and the Taihitians, while beautifully delineating the various and changing responses of their 'discovers' to the Pacific 'paradise'. Cook's portrayal is highly convincing, and the book assembles a brilliant argument for its conclusions about his violent end. Salmond's work is informed by an impressive anthropological knowledge, but it reads also as a sensitive exploration of personality and as a compelling adventure narrative. I have read a good many historical treatments of this material, and Salmond's work is among the best.

Now, managers can have access to the best of Levitt's thinking over the last five decades in Ted Levitt on Marketing. Framed by a new introduction, this book features seminal articles, including "Marketing Success Through Differentiation," "The Globalization of Markets," "After the Sale Is Over," and "Marketing Myopia." A must-have resource for managers and marketers in any industry, this Harvard Business Review Paperback book is filled with big ideas and practical tools for creating and sustaining a company's competitive edge.
Customer Reviews:
An essential collection of articles on marketing.......2006-09-05
Ted Levitt on Marketing is an outstanding collection of work written by a man, who is often regarded as the father of modern marketing. This is a 'must-have' collection of twelve articles originally published in the Harvard Business Review and includes classics like "Marketing Myopia (1960)," "Marketing Success Through Differentiation - of Anything (1980)," and "The Globalization of Markets (1983)."
These articles are easy to read (and re-read) because of their brevity (about 17 pages on average), but they are thorough and thought provoking. Though some of the data provided for support may seem dated, the ideas and principles that Levitt provides are still relevant in today's markets.
Theodore Levitt's articles have become a staple for MBA students' required reading, but regardless of whether you are a student or a veteran marketer or manager, you will find a variety of practical advice supported by rigorous research and astute observation. Theodore Levitt provided some of the most original and timeless insights into the world of business, and if you have never read any of his work, this is a great place to start.
I highly recommend this book.
Salute Professor Ted Levitt.......2006-07-20
Probably this is the last book Professor Levitt shares his groundbreaking and carefully crafted marketing insights with us before his recent death. (He died of a long illness on 28 Jun 2006. 28 Jun, coincidentally, is my date of birth)
Levitt was a Professor Emeritus at the Harvard Business School and the author of numerous seminal business articles on Marketing. This book is a reprint collection of his 12 award-winning articles published in the Harvard Business Review (HBR) since 1960 including "Marketing Myopia"(1960), "Creativity is not Enough (1963)". "Why Business Always Loses"(1968), "Production-Line Approach to Service"(1972), "The Globalisation of Markets"(1983), and "Advertising the Poetry of Becoming (1993)".
As a gifted marketing scholar with legendary vision rooted in the real world, Professor Levitt guides managers how to define their industries and create and sustain competitive advantages in the cut-throat world of marketing. For example, His article "Marketing Myopia" explains the downfall of two photographic corporations (Eastman-Kodak and Polaroid) as a result of narrow definition of their industry. In his another classic HBR article "Production-Line Approach to Service", he asserts that managers can utilise manufacturing approaches to solve people-intensive service problems. Despite the fact that his ideas about market globalisation and product standardisation remain a fierce controversy in the academic world, his article "The Globalisation of Markets" is still useful for today's managers to understand the power of globalisation and managers can learn how to build different analytical lens to view global markets. In developing organisational growth, the article "Creativity is not Enough" concludes that creativity cannot work well without conformity and rigidity in implementation.
Managers in the business world should salute Professor Levitt for his insightful and practical ideas that have guided and stimulated them to think a myriad of marketing issues. This book is highly recommended to readers who are interested in learning more about marketing insights from this respected guru.

In order to ensure continued company growth, executives must define their industries broadly and take advantage of growth opportunities. Four conditions usually guarantee the self-deceiving cycle of bountiful expansion and undetected decay: the belief that an expanding and more affluent population assures growth; the belief that no competitive substitute exists for the industry's major product; too much faith in mass production and in the advantages of rapidly declining unit costs as output rises; and preoccupation with a product that lends itself to carefully controlled scientific experimentation, improvement, and manufacturing cost reduction. McKinsey Award Winner.
Customer Reviews:
What business are you really in?.......2003-05-15
Theodore Levitt was lecturer in Business Administration at the Harvard Business School when this Harvard Business Review Classic was originally published. He now is Professor of Business Administration Emeritus at Harvard Business School.
This article was groundbreaking when it was published originally in 1960. It questions in a new and challenging way by urging organizations to define their industries broadly to take advantage of growth opportunities. "In truth, there is no such thing as a growth industry, I believe. There are only companies organized and operated to create and capitalize on growth opportunities." He discusses the four conditions which are responsible for a self-deceiving cycle of bountiful expansion and undetected decay: (1) increasing population; (2) production pressures; (3) mass production; and (4) dangers of research & development. Each is discussed in detail. During this process, he describes the difference between sales and marketing: "Selling focuses on the needs of the seller, marketing on the needs of the buyer." Levitt use railroads, oil and corner grocery industries to explain his points. The main point he tries to get across is that "the organization must learn to think of itself not a producing goods or services, but as buying customers, as doing the things that will make people want to do business with it." This e-document is complemented with a retrospective commentary by the author, written in 1975.
Fantastic article by Harvard Business School professor Theodore Levitt. It was an eye-opener for many companies in the 1960s and still is the starting point for marketing-courses at business schools. The author claims that most of the ideas within the article are based on works by others, in particular Peter F. Drucker, but of the simple and understandable language and examples the message comes across even better. Yes, perhaps some of the examples are out of date, but the message still rings true. Highly recommended to all MBA-students and people interested in management/marketing. The author uses simple business US-English.
