    Book Description

The Earliest English Kings is a sweeping and thorough overview of Anglo-Saxon History from the sixth century to the eighth century and the death of King Alfred. Kirby explains and explores the 'Heptarchy' or the seven kingdoms of Anglo-Saxon England, as well as the various peoples within them, wars, religion, King Offa, and the coming of the Vikings.

In this completely revidsed edition, the author brings this classic book up to date to reflect on current findings on this line of rulers. With maps and family trees, this book reveals the complex, distant and tumultuous events of Anglo-Saxon politics.

ISBN-13: 978-1-58477-583-6. ISBN-10: 1-58477-583-1. Cloth. $85. * The most impressive contribution to the bibliography of Anglo-Saxon legal sources since Thorpe and Liebermann, this edition contains the texts of the Kentish laws, the laws of Ine and Alfred the Great, treaties with the Danes, and the laws of Edward the Elder and Aethelstan. The texts are in Anglo-Saxon with English translations. (Latin texts are used if the Anglo-Saxon originals were lost.) "Mr. Attenborough has done a very useful work in providing a critical translation of the Anglo-Saxon dooms for English-speaking students who are unable, or do not go far enough to find it needful, to make use of Liebermann's great and apparently final edition. Not that advanced scholars can afford to neglect Mr. Attenborough, for he shows himself fully capable of independent judgement and makes many observations deserving their attention": Frederick Pollock, Law Quarterly Review 38 (1922) 511.

You've got to give this to former CBS golf analyst Ben Wright: he can sure tell a story, and the further he shoves his soft-spiked foot into his mouth, the better the stories. His anecdotal autobiography flits back and forth between idolatry and wickedness, and at times his pen has no governor at all. Case in point: Wright idolized Ben Hogan. He even went AWOL from the British army in 1953 "shamelessly, though without a trace of guilt," he admits, because it was the only way he could get off base to see Hogan win the Open at Carnoustie. (It's hard to quarrel with that.) After teeing up several tales that firmly ensconce Hogan on his pedestal, Wright finally veers off this way: "These stories illustrate the kind of perfection, dedication and respect with which Gary McCord"--Wright's fellow CBS analyst, and a pretty funny guy in his own right--"was wholly unfamiliar." Fore! Wright then proceeds to launch into a tale of introducing McCord to Hogan, Hogan humiliating McCord when he finds out McCord's been on tour for 17 years and has no victories, and Wright, who clearly detests McCord, getting to gloat, "I told you so."

Wright likes to gloat; he does a lot of it in Good Bounces, and he's awfully entertaining--if somewhat small--when he does. He's also entertaining on the intricacies and personalities of CBS's golf broadcasts, and what an analyst must go through when he criticizes a player. When Wright kept chastising Peter Jacobsen's atrocious putting, Jacobsen claimed he'd exorcised those woes by mentally imaging Wright being hoisted from the TV tower by a helicopter and flown into outer space. Which is about where Wright ultimately wound up when he hooked his career into the drink with some out-of-bounds comments about women golfers, breasts, and lesbianism in 1995. He still offers a bagful of excuses for the incident that badly tarnished him, but he does treat it with appropriate seriousness and contrition. He makes no excuses, though, for the alcoholism that actually sunk him. Given the public nature of his disgrace, Good Bounces is something of a mulligan for Wright. As both raconteur and provocateur, he's made a pretty good shot of it. --Jeff Silverman

                Book Description

One of golf’s preeminent commentators with more than fifty years of experience, Ben Wright relates the wealth of experiences he’s gained from writing and broadcasting about the world’s greatest golfers and courses, and his take on the infamous interview that cost him his twenty-three-year career as a golf announcer with CBS Sports.
In Good Bounces and Bad Lies, Wright brings the reader into the world of professional golf—and professional golf broadcasting—depicting in equal measure the game’s grace and tradition as well as its often raucous behind-the-scenes character. Wright tells of the ups and downs of his expansive career, relating dozens of funny and outrageous anecdotes along the way. Having known such greats as Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Tom Watson, and many other prominent figures in the world of golf, Wright gives the true insider’s perspective. Although controversial, Wright is an entertaining and engaging figure who personifies the elegance and audacity of the game of golf. This Bison Books edition features a new afterword by the author.

1 out of 5 stars Good bounces, Bad read.......2006-07-24

Wright's tales are stupendous, but to the point of being absurd. This is one of the few books in years that I finally just put down. He defects from the army to watch Hogan, his house is reduced to rubble but he and his sister miraculously survive; his overzealous buddy grabs a waiter and pulls him outside to beat him senseless...sheesh. I liked Wright as a commentator but leave this book on the shelf.

3 out of 5 stars No secret is sacred - no one is spared.......2002-11-27

Wright's book basically, after he gets through some obligatory stories about golf in England when he was young, is a tell all about most of the peole he has worked with at CBS Sports. If it is not a tell all, it will do 'til one comes around. Most of the problem is with alcohol...we hear of interventions, wild partys, stupid episodes of behavior...yet through it all...even after an intervention which sent him to Betty Ford...one of the staff told him before he left that he was not an alcoholic but an abuser of alcohol. What that distinction is remains lost to me but was understood by Ben. No matter. You wonder how CBS managed to produce a cohesive telecast of the Masters or any other tournament they were assigned to based on Ben's recollections. He also ran into some world travelers that he thought behaved badly. It is a "tell all" from one who is still in the dog house for telling all about his opinion of women's golf and the difference betwen the men's game and theirs. No matter that he had that just right,,,he was PC'd out and the world of golf broadcasting is the worse for it. I miss him behind the microphone, but the book goes a bit long.

Ben Wright does a superb job in taking mere golfing mortals behind the scenes of some famous, and some not so famous, tournaments to give an insight into LIFE in the golfing world. It is a page turner that had me howling with laughter as he strips bare the mystique behind both golf broadcasting and some of the peripheral characters that add to the colour of the sport. Of course in the true style that has endeared him to so many he also takes a few swipes at some brighter lights in the business of golf. Wright has an obvious deep love for the game but he does not let sentimentality get in the way of a good story. I am sure that he must have a stock of untold tales waiting to be let out of the closet and I look forward to the next installment from this very funny, very English and very lovable raconteur.

                5 out of 5 stars A GREAT Read.......2001-05-02

CBS, BRING THIS GUY BACK! If you want a good read that will absolutely make you CRY with laughter. This is the book for you...And you don't have to be a Golf fan to enjoy it. I always figured that stranged things happened behind the camera, but his stories will absolutely crack you up. It is definitely a MUST buy.

3 out of 5 stars Intimate sharing of a life in golf.......2001-01-20

Wright is as witty and colorful as his broadcasts were. Gives an image of broadcasting which most of us aren't aware of. We sense the morals and ethics of these public individuals are different. Appreciated even more his love for the game and extreme pain the LPGA comments have brought upon him. Image is everything!

                4 out of 5 stars Gritty & Unflinching.......2007-06-14

Newspapers attach a media savvy nickname to murderers, in order to grab a reader's attention. Ladykiller is no exception. The husband wife writing team of Meredith Anthony and Lawrence Light has delivered a frightening glimpse at the dark, sinister side of the city that never sleeps.

The senseless murder of four innocent women has the public demanding justice. With public tension, rising Detective Dillon gets the case. In addition to the mounting pressure to catch the killer, Dillon gets a stern ultimatum from his superiors, "catch him or you're out." Therefore, it is with his career on the line Detective Dillon is determined to bring justice to the Ladykiller.

Tracking the killer leads Dillon to the Crisis center and Megan Morrison, a gorgeous young social worker and her mentor and co-worker, Nita. The instant attraction between Dave and Megan creates yet another layer, bringing the reader deeper into, not only the story, but also the lives of the characters themselves. The relationship is electric between Dave and Megan. What follows is a passionate affair that could derail their investigation, as well as, their careers.

Anthony and Lawrence have created a character in the Ladykiller, with no conscience, that is able to move among the community practically unseen. He enjoys the tabloid and newspaper reports about the murders. Pausing to purchase a copy, he could not help but grin as he read, how stupid everyone was, he thought. Just because they could not fathom a reason for the carnage, certainly did not mean there was not a purpose. There was a purpose. Maybe one day not everyone would understand it, maybe.

This could very well be Detective Dillon's last chance to right a wrong from his past, which haunts his mind and dwells deep within his soul. With time running out, answers few and far between, finding the Ladykiller is his only hope. Repeatedly studying the crime scenes, searching the grotesque photos hoping the victims would speak to him. What could link a cheerleader, a hooker, a housewife and a stockbroker? Lies, secrets, manipulations, swirl together to create an atmosphere of anxiety, anticipation and an insatiable desire to know the truth, for both Detective Dillon and the reader.

Ladykiller is superbly written, with an intense plot line, multi-dimensional characters and a setting that is detailed in such a way that it becomes an integral part of the story. This book moves forward with astonishing speed, taking the reader to places we wish only existed in movies and books. Anthony and Lawrence shine a light into the darkened alleyways and hidden underbelly of New York, bringing to the reader a gritty and unflinching view of the very things that haunt us in our nightmares.

From the safety of my own home, I felt uneasy and found myself checking the doors and turning on an extra light. To deliver a novel that is refreshing and interesting when dealing with such dark, complex issues reveals true talent. With a few questions left a bit iffy at the conclusion. It is my sincere hope that this is the beginning of novel two, as opposed to simply the end of the Ladykiller.

5 out of 5 stars Well-written and gripping - definitely one to read........2007-05-23

Life in Times Square isn't all bright lights and glamour, especially for four very unlucky ladies who have met their maker with a quick bullet to the brain. LADYKILLER takes you on the twisted trail of these killings, mostly through the watchful eye of Detective Dillion who has been assigned to the special task force handling the murders. With the odds stacked against him (in more ways than one), Dillion steadily pulls the pieces of the puzzle together, leading the reader through an intriguing web of characters and settings. However there is one clue he's missed by a mile - the shocking end is worth every second spent reading! I highly recommend this book!

                5 out of 5 stars Great crime novel - a must read!.......2007-05-08

Ladykiller is a fast-paced, psychological thriller that I highly recommend. This book is my kind of mystery, with constant twists and turns and full of interesting characters. Set in New York City, the story mostly takes place during the night's darkest hours, adding great detail to the pursuit of a terrifying serial killer. The plot offers many surprises, the biggest of which happens in the very last paragraphs of the book. I really enjoyed reading Ladykiller and hope for more of the same from the authors.

Ladykiller is the debut suspense novel by Lawrence Light and Meredith Anthony, the husband and wife writing team, and what a unique writing team. They have penned a novel that is a must for crime enthusiast.

The setting is the streets of New York, and the year is 1991. Four women have been murdered from all different walks of life, including a cheerleader, stockbroker, a housewife and a prostitute. Homicide detective Dave Dillion of the NYPD is on the case and must solve these murders or risk losing his job. Dave encounters a beautiful social worker by the name of Megan Morrison, the two join forces in search for the serial killer, and romance ensues.

The press is calling the serial killer "Ladykiller". The killer has left no clues and no trail behind to follow. The murders always take place in some out of the way place where no witnesses can be found. There are never any signs of the victim being taken against her will and no signs of a struggle with their attacker, and the murders all appear to be personal in nature. Will Dave find the killer before its too late?

Lawrence Light is an award-winning journalist and is currently the Wall Street Editor for Forbes magazine. He graduated from Columbia School of Journalism and is the author of the Karen Glick novels. He currently resides in Manhattan with his wife and co-author Meredith Anthony.

Meredith Anthony has written for a variety of sources including film, television, print and the web. She graduated from St. John's College and also received a MA from The Johns Hopkins University.

Ladykiller is an intriguing, compelling and suspenseful crime novel packed with enticing twists and turns to keep you on the edge. The authors have created a powerful thriller that tantalizes with a sense of suspense and a steady flow of action. The characters are believable, finely developed and engaging. Ladykiller is superbly crafted with vivid detail that draws you into the story.

Set in the gritty streets of New York City, Ladykiller reveals just how hard it is to catch a killer in a city of 8 million. I really loved following the characters through the cold, dark neighborhoods of midtown and wondering who was gonna get it next. Despite learning the identity of the killer early on in the book, the authors managed to keep me guessing until the last pages as to how the story would actually end! It was fun to try and piece things together in a different way than most mysteries present. If you're looking for a fresh thriller, this is one I highly recommend!

Many years ago I listened to the audio version of Dangerous Lady and quite liked it. Since then I hadn't touched another Martina Cole novel but after reading an interview with the author I decided to give her books another go. I'm very happy that I started with The Ladykiller, as it is one of the best crime thrillers I've ever read. The book is about the criminal underworld in the East End of London where violence, prostitution, sex shops, massage parlours, hired thugs, bent coppers and paedophiles are a part of ordinary life. I know, it all sounds pretty heavy, and believe me the book is not what you would call light-hearted, but it is written with a such a down-to-earth style and with such realism and psychological insight that it is very enjoyable and exciting to read. Martina Cole is an amazing storyteller, and knows how to keep the reader hooked all the way through.

The novel starts by focussing on George Markham, an abused boy who has turned into an abusive man. George is heavily into sadomasochism and he has started to turn his violent fantasies into real-life crimes by raping and murdering women. One of these women is Mandy Kelly, the daughter of London hard man Patrick Kelly. Patrick will stop at nothing to track down her murderer and bring him to his kind of rough justice.

At the same time, the serial rapist / murderer is being hunted by DI Kate Burrows and her police team. Kate is a woman with a wayward daughter and an ex-husband who has breezed in and out of her life too many times. The emotional heart of the novel lies with Kate and Patrick, who are on opposite sides of the legal fence but who grow to love each other. Their relationship is rocky, passionate and controversial. I absolutely adored the fact that this book included such an interesting love story. In another author's hands it could have come across as ridiculous but Martina Cole writes it perfectly.

As a female reader, I found myself absolutely falling for Patrick Kelly whilst at the same time aghast about his criminal activities and penchant for much younger women (late teens to his forty-something years) when not in a relationship. You can see how Patrick is the result of his poverty-stricken upbringing - he did what he had to do in order to survive. Everything that makes him attractive - his strength, confidence and power - is also what makes him such a successful villain. Kate is also a really strong and interesting character, and I liked the way she stood up to Patrick and didn't give up her principles when she was with him, such as when she walked out of an illegal boxing match that Patrick wanted to see.

The book is also great because every scene seems so authentic. You become immersed in a world where women are `birds' and `skirts' (I know, I know, so chauvinistic - but it's part of the culture) and police officers are the `Old Bill' and `filth'. This book is certainly not politically correct, but it is better for it. Overall, I would recommend this book to people who like crime novels and aren't offended easily by violence, bad language and sexploitation! This novel is a wonderful guilty pleasure.

                One final note:
I'm surprised that Martina Cole isn't well-known in America, which I assume is the case due to the lack of reviews for her books on this website. I can only assume that the publishers felt that the distinctive East End slang / London gangster world wouldn't be understood by an American readership, which is a real shame because this is a great rough-tough gangster crime novel with a fiery romance sub-plot that is exciting all the way through. The subject matter is along the same lines as the Kenzie and Gennaro novels by American novelist Dennis Lehane, which also expose the violent and shocking criminal underworld where nothing is black and white and the line between the 'good guys' and the 'bad guys' is not as clear cut as you might think. Highly recommended.

                            Book Description

"Ladykiller" is the astonishing debut collection of seven smart stories from an exciting new voice in Canadian literature. Charlotte Gill is a brilliant young writer who is not afraid to stare down the truth and shame the devil. She conjures compelling stories about escape, self-sabotage, and the power of unconscious desire. A couple plots against a crying baby in the apartment below as their dysfunctional relationship begins to veer off course. A hot-shot scuba-diving instructor falls for a teenaged girl in a perilous Lolita-like romance. Twin sisters travel to exotic lands in search of romance in order to rescue themselves from their own dark, intense bond. A woman reconnects with the son of her father's mistress, and together they begin an obsession with the past. A medical student embarks on an affair with a professor and discovers revolution in disastrous consequences. An unfaithful man takes his girlfriend to his ailing mother's for Christmas, only to find himself at the crossroads of sexual impulse and mortality. "Ladykiller" is peopled with characters who succumb to the allure of trouble, who find it more satisfying to ruin than create. Gill explores this terrain with empathy and wit. Shot through with comic irony and gentle satire, these are compelling stories about the foibles of the human heart. "Ladykiller" is a brave collection of short fiction that reveals the strange wisdom embedded in our darkest instincts.

This AD&D (2nd edition) book is an in-depth examination of that pillar of fantasy literature - Dwarves. It has chapters on dwarven mythology, subraces, sociology (so you can better understand how dwarves think), character creation, proficiencies (26 new or specialized ones), kits (24 new ones!), personalities, mining (complete with rules for running your own mine), equipment, strongholds, and designing dwarf campaigns.

Yep, this fantastic book has it all! If you run an AD&D dwarf character, or you are just interested in new kits and ways of running campaigns, then I highly recommend this book to you. It is definitely a must-have for AD&D (2nd edition)!

I bought this book when it first came out and just loved it. There is so much detailed about dwarves in here and different kinds of dwarves that can be played. If you have a dwarven campaign going this is definitly worth having!!

5 out of 5 stars Gives a new look at the Dwarves.......1999-08-14

I've been a long time Elf lover. But once I picked up this book I changed my tune. What I once considered drab angry little creatures are actually quite interesting and enjoyable. I would recommend this book to any player but more so for a DM since it will help flesh out any dwarf holdings in your land.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Good.......1997-07-22

This was the first A D and D thing I bought I think it was good especially for anyone that plans on making a dwarven charecter. I know a guy who did not read it and he made a gully dwarf assassin! This was a good supplent as far as they go it is way better than the wizard's handbook. If You see this book and you like dwarves pick it up!

                                    Book Description

Breaking the Rules is both an intensely personal self-improvement book and a business management book. On the self-improvement side it is a personal guide for discovering what you are like at your very best and how to be that way more often. It offers a complete system of self-understanding based on the premise that being at your best is your natural state, and one you could be enjoying more often if you weren't doing so much to interfere with it. The author invites readers to join him in a discovery learning process that reveals how to stop interfering and learn to tap into and begin to work with the natural guidance that is readily available through your inner intuitive knowing.

A complete description is furnished for how real-time access to your intuition can be easily achieved when your intuition is being supplied with properly framed questions.

                                    Breaking the Rules proposes that:

                                    1) Being at your best cannot occur until you gain real-time access to your intuition.

                                    2) While it may be easier for women to access their intuition, it is actually men who have the more powerful intuitive capability. The real need is for both men and women to fully appreciate and make better use of this valuable strength.

                                    3) The proper use of "what's right" questions is a far simpler and more effective way to solve problems than trying to figure out what's wrong and fix it.

                                    4) All that we know about what it takes for an individual to be at his or her best must cross-apply to an organization or it cannot be considered valid.

                                    7) Problems that occur in our lives are simply ways used by our inner self to let us know that we are out of alignment with our life's purpose.

On the business management side, the work presented in Breaking the Rules is the culmination of more than 20 years of inquiry, development and field testing around the question, "What causes commitment, in its healthiest, least stressful form?" The author's initial working premise was that if the thought process used by visionary leaders to achieve their high level of effectiveness could be truly understood, that understanding should offer an ideal model for allowing organizations to achieve their own greatness. Breaking the Rules shows how this can now be demonstrated consistently in practice.

Kurt Wright presented a seminar to our management team ten years ago and it changed my life. I was fortunate to participate in a tele-seminar with him that was even more valuable. His approach to asking "right" questions that allows the other person to arrive at their own conclusions has deepened my relationship with colleagues, friends and family. It has totally changed me from a micro-manager to someone who trusts others to achieve objectives. I have rarely been let down when I showed confidence in other's competence to get things done.

When I was 20, I copied by hand Dale Carnegie, How to Win Friends and Influence People. By doing this I experienced a simple side effect, I made 7 million Deutschmarks. A lot of money in those days.
When I heard of Kurt and Patricia Wright's book, I copied/extracted the essence and sent my questions to the White House. You'll see, what's going to happen.
My only question to Kurt and Patricia is, why don't you change the title to the most effective How to Ask the (W)right Question and Succeed in Life. http://EnergyChallenge.de/091105.htm

This is a brilliant, provocative, intriguing, challenging, energising (literally!) book!

What was the best thing for me?

His concept of the Detached Control Achievement patterns (That's me!)

                                    Other great things?

Clarity around how to GET my Life Purpose (two years of Landmark Forum training did not get me to GET that!).

We get more of what we measure (so measure what you want improved)

That I have a "powerful drive to learn" and all the behaviour/thoughts which go with that.

I look at the world through my own eyes, not those of others. No wonder when I ask people about me, what they see is so different from what I see myself! Powerful insights for me here.

And that I need to envision at least 10 years ahead (last year I created a goal of being "Alive, Alert and Active on my 100th birthday" so I've been thinking along the Right lines.)

It's amazing how my perspective changed when I thought in terms of having another 45 years of life to map out and plan!

This is not just a book - it is a working manual for driving through life on maximum revs!

5 out of 5 stars This book continues to change my life.......2003-06-04

Breaking the is truly a life-changing book for me. Just another self-help book, I thought. It turned out to be unlike any other self-help book that I've ever read.

How is this book different? This is not a book that made me feel good, but never managed to change anything about me, leaving me feel more powerless than before. The authors, Kurt and Patricia Wright, actually manage to engage into a relationship with me, never leaving me off the hook. On the contrary, sometimes I found them to be so inquisitive and personal I put the book down or feel uncomfortable with their questions.

It is indeed the questions that are life changing. I never really new how to ask questions of myself and others that actually improve things. You know how in our conversations and thoughts we so often focus on what's wrong and trying to fix that? And how it never really gets us anywhere? Breaking the Rules is about that, about asking right, empowering questions. About learning to recognize your already existing strength and to build on those so we can all reach a state of effortless high performance.

After reading this book I can never look at myself the same way again. It's like that image where you could at first only see the old lady, unable to see that there was also a young lady in there. Once you see the young lady you can never "unsee" her.

If you are ready for looking at what's right in your own life and the lives of those around you, whether in your personal relationships or in business, you've found your book.

5 out of 5 stars A remarkable, wise, soul searching book.......2002-07-31

I didn't expect this book to be so good. It's remarkable, wise, and soul awakening. Concepts such as all stress is self-induced, that all criticism is self-revealing, that every moment has total perfection, are mind stretching, liberating, and empowering. This is a classic book. I'm going to get copies for people I care about. Read it.
