Book Description

Wheeler Thackstons lively new translation of The Jahangirnama, co-published with the Freer/Arthur M. Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, presents an engaging portrait of an intriguing emperor and his flourishing empire. The Emperor Jahangir is probably best know in the West as being the father of Shahjahan, who built the Taj Mahal. His reign was one of great prosperity, and his passion for art and nature encouraged a flowering that some say rivaled European art during the rule of the Medicis. In penning his memoirs, Jahangir followed a tradition begun by his great-grandfather, the Emperor Babur. Jahangirs memoirs, however, provide not only the history of his reign, but also his reflections on art, politics, and private details about his familyincluding the suicide of one of his wivesand selections of poetry written by members of his harem. One of Jahangirs stories describes his astonishment at witnessing the fall of a meteorite, an event that so amazed him that he ordered that a dagger be made from its metal. This book includes a selection of exquisite full-color paintings, drawings, and objects that specifically illustrate the passages they accompany--including a photograph of the Emperors treasured dagger. A lover of jewels, nature, hunting, drinking, and opiates, Jahangir carried the Mughal empire to artistic and political heights. Refreshingly candid and frank, this splendidly illustrated edition of Jahangirs memoirs is a thoroughly absorbing profile of an emperor and the zenith of his empire.

5 out of 5 stars Miniature painting at its best.......2001-08-26

I would recommend this book for serious folks interested in the art of Mogul Miniatures. Jahangir was a very special king and this book sheds light on the magic of the time period. It is a big and physically heavy book but such a joy to read. You can glimpse into the interests and lives of the royality and experience their lives in detail. The authors have gone into alot of research and there are many descriptions to dates, calendar, language and art. The book itself is a work of art. The reproductions of the miniature paintings, including many portraits of the royal court, are excellent. It is about time that art such as this is understood, recognized and appreciated. This book leads the way.

Book Description

Foreword by Sidney Matthew Preface by Charlie Yates.

Considerable Passions is one of the most significant books ever published on the world's most influential golfer. Featuring an array of never-before seen photographs from the personal archives of the legendary Bobby Jones tracing back to the early days of American golfing, Considerable Passions takes us inside the personal and professional life of this beloved golfer and the game that he helped make great. The companion volume to the permanent exhibition at the prestigious Atlanta History Center, Considerable Passions is the definitive work on Bobby Jones and his legacy.

When Robert "Bobby" Tyre Jones Jr. won the four major golf tournaments (the British Amateur, the British Open, the U.S. Open, and the U.S. Amateur) all in the same year (1930), he became a worldwide hero and the first to achieve golfing's "Grand Slam."

Considerable Passions leads us "down the fairway" of Bobby Jones's life and golfing career, from his days as a competitive golfer, through his early retirement in 1930 at age 28, to his phenomenally popular instructional books and newspaper columns and his involvement in club and course design (such as the most revered American course, the Augusta National Golf Club). Jones's charisma, talent, and foresight shine through, and it's easy to see why he is considered the greatest of them all.

"The story of the man considered to be the most important golfer in the history of the sport, Bobby Jones. Photographs and personal artifacts follow his life through his incomparable number of tournament wins, family, successful business career and ongoing dedication to the game." - about the exhibition, "Down the Fairway with Bobby Jones." At the Atlanta History Center

About the Permanent Exhibit -- Hosted by the prestigious Atlanta History Center, "Down the Fairway with Bobby Jones" is the first and only permanent exhibit on Bobby Jones and the history of golf. Featuring rare archival photographs and personal artifacts, it traces Jones's life through his incomparable number of tournament wins, family, successful business career - spanning the early history of the game through the modern era.

Book size is 10" x 10", with 4-color photographs throughout book.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not outstanding.......2006-12-14

This volume, written to accompany the Down the Fairway exhibit at the Atlanta History Center, is a nice coffee table book, filled with some interesting pictures and some good essays. A downside to this volume is that Dr. Lewis engages in some speculation concerning Jones' attitude toward race that does not hold up to the experience of those who actually knew him. Although this volume is nice, a better treatment of Jones' life is Sidney Matthew's outstanding - but somewhat hagiographical - volume, "Life and Times of Bobby Jones: Portrait of a Gentleman."

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift - Beautiful Book.......2000-04-18

A delightful telling of Jones' life and his contributions to golf. Jones' career and his times are documented in powerful fashion. The pictures are amazing the scope and breath really are incredible. If you or your loved one love's golf this is the book for you. This one looks great on the coffee table and will have your guests wanting their own copy.

5 out of 5 stars Colorful book for learning chess.......2006-12-03

The book is filled with colorful illustrations. The illustrations portray chess pieces, pawns and the board rather plastic and realistic 3-D format, and while they look beautiful, when it comes to explaining chess positions, I have found 2-D illustrations (as chess positions are normally presented in other books) more helpful - it's easier to distinguishes pieces.

The book covers the very basics of chess: how each piece moves, how it captures as well as some basic tactics and strategies; but it may take you little bit more than a weekend to master these basics, both through reading and through practice.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST for kids & people who know nothing about chess.......2002-11-17

If you already know the basics of chess, or you know someone who can teach you, then Learn Chess in a Weekend is of no special value.

But for those who may want to learn Chess and know nothing about it already or believe chess is too complex or difficult, especially for kids (and their parents) just starting out this is the best book I have ever seen. Most introductory books are dry and uninviting, often assume you know at least how the pieces move, but this book has great visuals that give you a graphic feel for the game, is written in a very easy to follow style that a seven year old can follow and understand, and it does not assume anything about your familiarity with chess.

Can you really learn everything the book offers in a weekend? Maybe not. But in two days time you can learn the basics moves and tactics of the game with this book easily because of the style and the graphics. This is an excellent book for kids just starting out. Far superior to the the elementary "rules" that you tend to get with your chess set. It does work up to strategy and explores some famous games (which may be beyond young kids), but most adult readers will soon move on to books that are stronger in those areas.

Know a child who might like to learn Chess? Buy them this book and their first chess set and they will.

3 out of 5 stars Plane, but specific in color photos.......2000-05-16

I think this book is very helpful for beginners who have not acquainted with chess, but not so much good to over-beginners(?) whose rating about 1200. The specific property of this book is 3-dimensional view of chess board in color photos. But I feel some difficulty in imaging the situation compared to 2-dimensional figure. Anyway, this book contains all the basic rule, concept, tactics of chess in about 100 pages.

5 out of 5 stars Learning Chess Made Easy.......2000-03-26

This book lives up to its title. I literally learned chess in a weekend. Its handy size makes it possible to bring it with you anywhere you go as a quick reference for any questions. The book clearly explains how each piece moves; how to set up the board; and even explains moves that many people aren't (unfortunately) aware of like "en passant" for example. The photographs are crisp, clear and provide the utmost help in orienting yourself to how to play the game effectively. The book is great because it teaches you "how" to play chess (i.e, strategy, opening moves, piece placement for effective structure, etc.) so that you move in a direction away from just moving pieces arbitrarily. This was the book that demystified the often, or so it seems, enigmatic game.

Conventional wisdom has it that John Kenneth Galbraith's The Affluent Society spawned the neoliberalism we see in Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, and other world leaders. The economist's prose, lofty but still easily manageable, laid down the gauntlet for the post-cold war class struggle that was still far in the future in 1958. Galbraith saw the widening gap between the richest and the poorest as an emergent threat to economic stability, and proposed significant investment in parks, transportation, education, and other public amenities--what we now call infrastructure--to ameliorate these differences and postpone depression and revolution indefinitely. Widely criticized by conservatives and libertarians wary of public expenditures or increased government influence, Galbraith still influences liberal and neoliberal thinking. He has acknowledged that his work, like that of most social scientists, contains flaws (like his dire prediction of an out-of-control unemployment and inflation spiral that petered out in the 1980's), but much of it remains fresh and true even today. Four years before Silent Spring, he wrote about the consumerist blight that threatened our wild lands equally as much as our cities; his hoped-for increase in environmental awareness has grown significantly in recent years. Whether you support the political implementations of his views, experiencing his writing is important to put those views in context. More than this, though, it is an honest pleasure to read such original ideas so well expressed. --Rob Lightner

        Book Description

Galbraith's classic on the "economics of abundance" is, in the words of the New York Times, "a compelling challenge to conventional thought." With customary clarity, eloquence, and humor, Galbraith cuts to the heart of what economic security means (and doesn't mean) in today's world and lays bare the hazards of individual and societal complacence about economic inequity. While "affluent society" and "conventional wisdom" (first used in this book) have entered the vernacular, the message of the book has not been so widely embraced--reason enough to rediscover The Affluent Society.

4 out of 5 stars The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-09-14

John Kenneth Galbraith is probably the economist that I have read most. This book is a classic and very much worth reading for it analysis of the market system. But when all is said and done I consider it more a work of speculative fiction. I read a book similar to this by Bertrand Russell back in the 60's but both books are lacking a bit in scepticism of the human beast. The very idea that we would all be so wealthy one day that we wouldn't know what to do as a society - or that somebody would have to mail us a check in order to encourage spending and that poverty would be a secondary problem etc. etc. etc. Is plain naivete or maybe wishfull thinking.

5 out of 5 stars courage of thinking.......2006-08-07

it' s the first time I read something like that in economics.

        4 out of 5 stars Affluenza?.......2006-07-14

Written long before modern realization of how our desire for affluence as part of our "right by birth" has largely caused such things as global warming and elimination of species, Galbraith gives a very indepth exposé of the origins and tendencies of the North American material ethos. I would have given this book 4.5 or 5 stars save for the fact that it takes a bit of work on the reader to bring it fully up to date with respect to some of the consequences we now see.

That said, I would heartily recommend this work prior to reading his or other author's more recent works on the direction of modern western society.

5 out of 5 stars Pragmatic approach to economics.......2005-09-08

There is a glaring blind spot among Conservative economists who speak breathlessly about freedom and distribution of power yet completely ignore the threat brought on by the disparity of wealth. The growing gap was what Marx saw as the eventual destroyer of Capitalism. Conservatives, on the other hand, see the disparity not as a problem but as a solution to pure democracy where a street sweeper has the same one vote as a CEO. Extreme wealth puts the power back in the hands of the people most capable of wielding it.

Mr. Galbraith takes a look back at the evolution of economics starting with the early belief that the average worker would always earn just enough to survive and perhaps raise a family. Later Herbert Spencer expounded his Social Darwinian view of economics that has shown a resurgence in the last few decades. The original view was that social programs literally allow inferior genetic lines to procreate and dilute society. It was the collapse of the stock market in the 1930's that put Social Darwinism on the back burner. Although Marx correctly predicted the collapse, the economy recovered and the increasing disparity never created a revolution in the United States. This, however, may have been thanks to the many wealth redistribution programs created after the Great Depression. The author also points out that there is more of a physical separation between the economic strata's and ostentatious displays of wealth have become at best passé at worst vulgar.

The book punches a hole in the theory that productivity declines as worker security increases. One need only look at the dramatic rise in both production and security after World War II. As Mr. Galbraith points out it's always the OTHER guy who should give up security. Corporations and corporate heads work to create a broad cushion of support for themselves while decrying additional safeguards for workers as wasteful of needed capital. Although the author generally supports growth over wealth distribution as a way to improve society he is far more pragmatic than Conservative economists. Unlike right wing ideologists, Mr. Galbraith recognizes that the market often focuses on the things society needs least. There will always be a need for balance between public and private funding in particular for large scale research projects and public goods like education that the market shows a lack of interest in. The author doesn't seemed to have the same mystical reverence for market forces that some economists exhibit. He also has little respect for the federal reserves ability to even out market fluctuations using monetary policy (conservatives) or fiscal policy (liberals). Even with his support of business growth Mr. Galbraith recognizes that growth obsession can be a dangerous thing for, among other things, creating increasingly unmanageable debt in a heavily consumption based society.

There seems to be a definite slant in economics towards the desires of the business class which includes worshipping at the altar of deregulated, free market Capitalism. John Kenneth Galbraith is a refreshingly non-ideological view of economics which actually recognizes that perhaps it's better to offer opportunities to the poor rather than kicks to the teeth to encourage growth out of poverty.

5 out of 5 stars Hope for a hurting world.......2003-11-22

This is a book which excites and stirs. It animates and illuminates my hearts desire to become both authentically human and faithfully Christian, my yearning to have a faith which truly transforms my life and the community I'm part of, my craving for a faith which integrates a world fragmented by injustice and division.

Eugene Peterson writes that Marva Dawn's new book contains, " clarifying, energizing, necessary words for Christian understanding and obedience." Walter Brueggemann describes Dawn as, "one of our most acute social critics and articulate theologians, who moves quickly past the puzzling issues of method to the real stuff of faith." The real stuff of faith and life is what I deal with everyday. So does this book in any way help me as a priest and pastor to make sense of the world around me? Does it equip and encourage the church in being better at being Jesus in the world today? I believe it does!

This book is not just another post 9/11 commentary on modern life. It certainly does contain a reflective and accessible synthesis of social commentary, philosophy and theology which itself affords a piercing critique of the world as it is. But it's much much more. "Unfettered hope" is both prophetic statement and Christian apologetic, manifesto for practical engagement and pastoral handbook for faithful living. Dawn seeks to understand more cogently the forces which bind (fetter) people's lives thus preventing them from becoming truly human and truly Christian. These "fetterings" bind us and blind us by obscuring true priorities and values. In exchange people are given false hopes which result in them being distracted from what should be core values, priorities and practices, what are called our "focal concerns".

The book begins by looking at how life is fettered. It looks at the nature and character of a culture defined by consumerism and technological advancement. It does so not only in terms of its impact upon the wealthy west but also the affect on the struggling two thirds world. This is not another romantic post industrial response to modernity. The problem is not seen as technology per se but how its particular paradigm shapes our thoughts, values and ideals. The great triumph of this paradigm is seen in its "Technical bluffs"how it always promises more than it can deliver. Our optimistically grand expectations and claims concerning the future are debunked as bluff or in the words of fictional character Holden Caulfield mere phonyism. Dawn looks at the nature and extent of this paradigm. This critique is not new. It could be argued that the Wachowski brothers use similar metaphors in the movie "The Matrix" ( Warner Brothers 1999 ). But unlike the Matrix, I cannot escape fully from its grip. We live in two worlds simultaneously, the world of God's emerging kingdom and the world as it is. The challenge becomes to how "resist, restrict and reform" the all pervading value system of this post modern early 21st century culture ?

This is done, Dawn argues, by living according to focal concerns. Ch.3 looks at what Christian focal concerns might be whilst Ch.4 shows how churches in the west often fail to live by them. That we succumb to the same fetterings as everyone else is a result of not realizing the basic paradigm or underlying value system which affects us all. Ch.5 presents true hope in the "...grandly sweeping meta-narrative.. " which is the Christian faith. Consequently this, " ...frees us to live our focal concerns joyfully- to love God and our neighbours wholeheartedly" Chapter 6 gives us clues to what this might look like practically, " seventy practices by which we, empowered by the hope of the Gospel, can attend to our focal concerns and challenge the culture by which the whole world is mired in despair." This chapter has great pastoral connection for all those who struggle in the gloriously messy business of seeing and shaping lives transformed by Christ.

The final chapter further defines this hope as eschatological where our present understanding is shaped by a future promise, a beautifully crafted picture of hope based on promise not power.Even here Dawn offers brilliant pastoral insights and images. Good theology always concerns itself with the "How" of everyday life. Marva Dawn successfully does just this, whilst prayerfully integrating the book into a thoughtful and engaged spirituality. I cannot just read this book. I am drawn into its struggle to work out the implications in prayer and thought, pastoring and preaching, living and dying.

5 out of 5 stars ...and you thought you were living the good life..........1999-09-23

I was required to read this for my book report, and after reading it, I think this book deserves to be in the desks of every college student in the world. It ventures into areas that a lot of generations have been trying to ignore. Serge Latouche presents the western civilization as inherently flawed(and at certain aspects, evil), the poor as not always miserable, and the concern for life as overrated, among other things. It is so different from how we were taught to view the world, and the author's points are so well founded, any reader will be seduced to rethink their ideas about the world society.
