Shadow Court: The Reckoning Part Two is the continuing journey of Rork as he strives to find his place in the world as a holy knight and as he faces past deeds. Along the way, Rork discovers the truths behind the words of a holy man he met while on a campaign many years before. Throughout his transformation into a tool of the One God, Rork tries to keep those he loves from harm, but they will not be kept from his side, even though they must chase after him to the very eastern shores of Atla where dark shadows await all. In the end, Rork trusts in divine powers and the bonds of those close to him as he confronts his worst sin—the abandonment of family and the evil it wrought.

            Book Description

In Glory's Shadow explores the history of The Citadel, an institution set on preserving tradition in the face of profound change. Established as protection against slave insurrections feared by the white minority of Charleston, South Carolina, a generation later The Citadel was a school of privilege for young white men. Through two world wars it grew in size and reputation, proudly providing the United States with (male) military leaders, paying little heed to what was happening in the country around it.

In 1993, when the school rescinded Shannon Faulkner's admission because of her gender, a landmark legal battle ensued. Faulkner won, and although she faced vicious harassment and left after a week, The Citadel was forced to reform: nearly 30 women have graduated since her brief time at The Citadel. In Glory's Shadow is an engrossing and illuminating look at this pivotal event in military history and the history of women.

2 out of 5 stars Disjointed and Polemical.......2002-09-25

This book sets out to be many things. It succeeds at none of them. As a result, it's not only disjointed and confusing, but soaked through with bias as well.

One the one hand, author Catherine S. Manegold, a defense reporter for the New York Times, writes of the fight over the admission of Shannon Faulkner to The Citadel as a metaphor of South versus North. At the same time, she presents the chronology of a legal battle. And a biography of Ms Faulkner. And a sociological study of life at a military college. If Ms Manegold had concentrated on any one of these things, the book might have been more successful.

But apparently she couldn't decide which tack to take, and so the book ends up muddled. Long biographical introductions are given to people who end up playing minor parts in the drama. Lines are drawn for a conflict of cultures -- hidebound, traditional, inbred, hypocritical Charleston versus dynamic, hip, multicultural, liberal New York City -- but this allegory is abandoned as soon as it's developed. The central legal battles are disposed of in a series of 'the lawyers said ... the judges said,' and then, presto!, Ms Faulkner is in the door.

Ms Faulkner herself is the central figure in this drama, but at the end of the book, many questions about her remain unanswered. Did she apply to The Citadel purely on a whim, as it seems at first? Did she want the luster that comes with a Citadel ring (The Ring is almost Wagnerian in its significance), the 'network' and 'connections,' without understanding that the network depends on the shared experience of surviving the Citadel? Were her energies so focused on the legal fight that she was unprepared for what she found when she got in? When she left The Citadel, she complained that she had no friends in the school or the Corps. Was she really so naïve as to expect the school she and her lawyers had spent years attacking to offer her a warm embrace once she battered the doors down? None of these questions are adequately answered. It's not even clear whether the days Ms Faulkner spent in the infirmary were due to heat stroke, a mental or emotional breakdown, physical collapse, or something else entirely.

Instead, we get strange asides, like the bizarre suggestion that harassment of Ms Faulkner was connected to Caribbean voodoo rituals. Or four irrelevant pages rehashing the charges against one of the Left's favorite targets, the School of the Americas.

Interestingly, two of the most evocative sections of the book -- a harrowing account of Hell Week and the strangely moving epilogue 'Fear is like a Tree' -- contain barely a mention of Ms Faulkner at all.

Most Americans probably don't have real strong feelings about The Citadel one way or another. On the extremes, though, are people who really, really love the school, and others who really, really hate it. It's pretty clear whose side Ms Manegold is on.

Unlike Dr Laura Fairchild Brodie, who wrote about 'assimilation' of women at VMI, Ms Manegold is not 'the band director's wife.' Not, that is, someone who knows the story from the inside. She seems not to have even residual sympathy for The Citadel as an institution, for the young men (and women) who attend it, or for the administrators wrestling with how to adapt to a society that has rejected nearly everything they value. Considering the patronizing, even sneering, tone she sometimes takes toward the military and people who serve in it, it's surprising Ms Manegold could have endured a career as a defense reporter.

As Ms Manegold tells it, the original sin of The Citadel was to have been founded for the purpose of training militias in the suppression of slave revolts and the perpetuation of the planter-dominated caste system. The Citadel apparently is tainted by this sin forever, and neither the school nor the author can ever overcome it: she mentions it frequently, often gratuitously. After the War and the end of slavery, The Citadel turned inward, and cadets practiced on one another the social suppression and physical abuse they could no longer impose on slaves. This is what passes for sociological analysis in this book.

That's too bad, because there is clearly an interesting and important story here. Maybe someday, someone will find a more effective, less polemical, way to tell it. In the meantime, read Nancy Mace's book instead.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful Analysis of Life in Soutnern Military Culture.......2001-12-10

Catherine Manegold has written a mesmerizing story of the first female applicant to the Citadel, a southern military college located in Charleston, South Carolina. It traces the history and traditions of a formerly exclusive male domain with all the painful insights needed to fully explain the trauma and degradation which go into initiation into such an oppressive
culture. You will be amazed, you will be shocked at the measures
taken in an effort to refuse to enter the 20th century. She exposes us to the cyclical and circular patterns of what it means
to wear the Citadel ring. In this system men are traumatized by life outside the code, estanblished by the process of indoctrination, to the degree that many of them come back to alma mater as teachers and administrators in order to perpetuate the way of life they hold so dear beacuse they can't make it anywhere else. It is frightening, even terrifying, to learn about the code of silence and the extent to which these men will go to protect their patriarchal, domineering society. Manegold makes very real something so foreign to modern culture. Her painstaking analysis of the whys and wherefores of Shannon Faullkner's attempt to break the gender barrier is the best you will find anywhere. It's well worth the read, but be prepared to lose some sleep when you learn this medieval approach to military education still exists in today's USA.

1 out of 5 stars What you would expect.......2001-10-27

This book was rarely accurate and hardly worth the time I took reading it. Preaching from a single-minded point of view, the author professes to understand a culture and institution where she is an outsider. Having experienced The Citadel experience first hand, I can assure you it is one that is not easily explained to the outsider. Perhaps I am being a bit harsh, but quite a few of the points made in this book reflect upon a mind set that I can not comprehend. Read for yourselves, but I also implore you to keep an open mind about a school that has produced some of the finest patriots of the United States.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greats of WWII fiction!.......2006-04-16

Very rarely in WWII fiction does an author mnage to create a story of literary genius as Allington does with this novel. From the discovery of Jewish ancestry to the forging of artwork, this exquisistely written novel rises above simple war fiction to become a work of literature.

5 out of 5 stars An Exciting Thriller!.......2002-07-31

"The Court of Blue Shadows" is, without question, one of the best thrillers pertaining to the tragic events of the Holocaust that I have read. Maynard Allington uses vivid imagery, accurate historical data, and brilliant plot development to skillfully weave a story that is very difficult to put down.

The story's protagonist, who suffers from a case of trauma induced amnesia, gradually uncovers the shocking truths about his recent past. Although he was once a member of the German elite, he is shaken to the core to discover how his Jewish roots have taken him on a horrifying journey he never thought imaginable. As such, the reader is drawn by the page turning suspense of learning the truth about the hero's past as well as what these truths will drive him to accomplish in his uncertain future.

This emotionally gripping novel has everything: suspense, action, brilliant character development, historical value, and even psychological value. Allington's imaginative story line and gifted prose definitely kept this reader captivated with "The Court of Blue Shadows."

1 out of 5 stars Solid Plot, but the author doesn't pull it off.......1998-08-27

Allington comes up with a excellent plot idea, however his prose fails to capture the reader into the time and place of the events. Also the dialog sounds tacky. Again the story is solid; after a couple more drafts, who knows?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent action/suspense novel set in the aftermath of WWII.......1998-06-16

Maynard Allington crafts a thoroughly engaging and enjoyable post-WWII suspense novel, with well utilized flashbacks. Allington's protagonist is an amnesia sufferer suddenly recalling his nightmarish pre-war flight from persecution and imprisonment in the Nazi concentration camp system while living in a post-war world where he is filled with hate and loathing for old friends, acquantainces and lovers and acting as an avenging "angel" for the death of his siblings. Allington's protagonist is allied with a fellow concentration camp survivor fighting with her own demons, most notably her own self-loathing.

As an avowed fan of WWII historical fiction in the mode of Jack Higgins, I found "The Court of Blue Shadows" to be a fitting addition to my reading of this genre.

For fans of WWII suspense fiction, I strongly recommend "The Court of Blue Shadows".

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding blend of suspense makes this a masterpiece!.......1997-07-28

Maynard Allington once again proves that he is a master of the suspense genre, painting a literary masterpiece that would make Rafael green with envy. Allington blends suspense and humanity in the telling of this story of post World War Two Germany, and its treatment of Jews. Allington's dialogue is crisp, and his action sizzles. This book should be on display in the Louvre

I happened to pick up a copy of "Court of Shadows" from my school library in grade nine and I found the plot, characters, and settings very interesting and enlightening even though it was a lengthy novel. Contrary to what Kirkus Reviews has written about the book being over researched, I find Morgan's descriptions of the scenery and lives of the characters quite realistic and informative to a reader who's fond of Elizabethan England. Of course, there probably are a number of novelists who have done better than Morgan in this department but she's done exceptionally well in interweaving various settings(e.g. Spain, England, France...) into one book. I've read this book at least a dozen times and I never get tired of it and the novel has successfully got me hooked on the subject of the Tudor Age...if one is hooked on the subject..it doesn't really matter if "The Court of Shadows" is really realistic or not...all it matters is that the novelist does a wonderful job at sparking one's interest in further researching and studying what really went on during that time! :) And for the record, Kirkus Reviews, Justin Lisle is "Lord HARWOOD" not "HARRINGTON" or whatever you've written in your review. I am not obsessed, just thorough. So go on, read the book yourself :) Enjoy!

                  5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2001-02-01

I can't say enough good things about this book. It takes during Elizabeth's reign. Mary of Scots is already her prisoner, and the Catholics are plotting against Elizabeth. A beautiful woman named Kat forces her way on an adventure with her brother to spy for the queen's intelligence. Unfortunately she falls in love with the man, Justin, that she is spying on. Justin catches her spying, yet he doesn't know who she is working for. So he keeps her with him on his tratirous journey to Spain and the home of his Catholic cousin. This book is well researched, historically accurate, a great story! There are a couple of chapters that make you yawn, but for the most part you will be up all night. She is good in the way that Sharon Kay Penman is.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, heartbreaking, full of adventure.......1999-05-03

This is a really wonderful book. Full of romance, deceptions, friendships, love, all a book needs. Kat is a noble woman, who happens to overhear a conversation between her brother and a man from the Queen. She decides to help her brother, and dresses up like a man, to help spy. She is eventually caught, while her brother isn't. He though,is in a predictament of his own. This book is totally a no-put-down book. However, there are times when the author tells you a bunch of history, and that can get a little boring. I skipped over those parts, and understood the book fine. READ IT!

                      Book Description

The latest techniques for preserving family wealth and legally avoiding personal liability in the operation of a small business are provided in this guide. Intended for the small business owner, the strategies discussed are equally effective in larger businesses. Taken together, these strategies provide a multilayered approach to asset protection, offering redundant protection and often presenting an insurmountable barrier to creditors. Topics covered include the types of property that are exempt from bankruptcy and legal judgments; and methods for using insurance, asset transfers, and asset protection trusts as a second level of defense. The strategies detailed in this book have been proven effective by actual court cases. Alternatives are contrasted and compared in terms of costs, complexity, and effectiveness, affording owners the opportunity to choose approaches based on their needs.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Intro to Asset Protection.......2005-03-02

This book is probably the best entry level guide to asset protection.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book for general public.......2004-07-17

I read through the book and learned a lot about various aspects of asset protection. This book is focused on small business, as it says, and it does an excellent job when discussing various 'tools'. There are many great asset protection 'tools' out there, but what works for you is all you need to care about, and this books does just that to small business owners.

The book starts with understanding your position to creditors (private and gov't). Then, it helps you get to know one tool after another in different situations you may be in, and each chapter is just in great details including pro and cons, typical scenarios, and Smart Plan (I love these).

Of course, no one is perfect. What I wish to see from this book, and many other books in this topic, is the overall picture of a business entity model/structure a person/business should have. For instance, it'll be much more helpful if the author include 2 or 3 smart business structures one should/could have and provide explanation of how each model works. The model should utilize, let's say, LLC, Living Trust, children's Trust... altogether to build a strong asset protection structure for a business and its business owners. It's true that the models may not totally work for each indiv., but it does give great understanding of how/why it's structured the way it is.

Overall, the book is great and highly recommended to general public readers who, like me, is not a lawyer or pro in this area. Further legal assitance is still recommended, but at least readers get good understanding when designing their own plan.

5 out of 5 stars What every small to large-sized business owner needs !!.......2003-06-21

It's clear that the author has years of experience in protecting business owners' hard-earned assets. The author's asset protection strategies range from simple and inexpensive to complex and costly. This really makes the book suitable for managers of large corporations as well as small business owners.

At 500 pages, the book is detailed and comprehensive, but easy to read. Who would have known that in many states taking out a second mortgage on a house could make it exempt from attachment, while in other states, just the opposite approach, i.e., paying off the first mortgage, is what's required? Or that an IRA shields assets from the claims of creditors in many states and thus provides much more than a tax shelter, while in other states an ERISA-qualified 401(k) plan is a better choice? The author sorts all of this out in an authoritative but easy to read guide. Many readers will wish that they had this book years ago before financial problems developed. But, even there the author has strategies that can help avert a disaster.

The content, layout and design of this book make it not only indispensable, but actually fun to read. The tips, warnings and anectdotes are terrific. Attorney Misenti obviously has wide ranging experience in this field and his writing style is superb.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Wealth Preservation Guide.......2003-05-29

This is the ultimate guide to wealth building and wealth preservation. I've read other guides on forming an LLC or a corporation, but I never realized how woefully inadequate those other guides were before I purchased this book. As the author points out, many business owners form an LLC or a corporation without understanding how to strategically fund the entity, avoid exceptions to limited liability, or transfer assets to exempt categories, all of which are necessary if financial wealth is to be preserved in the face of lawsuits or bankruptcy. This guides teaches how to do all of that, and more.

The addition of actual cases, state asset exemption lists, and business forms for LLC's, makes this one of the best books of its kind that I've seen. Apparently this is one book in a series from the publisher that has received a lot of acclaim. ...

5 out of 5 stars Save a Million Dollars! Timely Guidance.......2003-05-29

I've read that small business and entrepreneurs lead the country out of a recession. This guide could not be more timely. Don't start a business or expand your business without buying this book. This guide should be in the library of every business owner and well used. This really is the best, and most comprehensive asset protection guide on the market for small business owners, corporate mangers, and individuals interested in preserving their wealth.

I like the fact that the author proves that, when his asset protection strategies are put into place before financial problems arise, they are virtually beyond challenge, even to the extent of preserving an individual's entire wealth against the most significant of claims. I found it amazing that, with the right planning, millionaires can emerge from a major lawsuit or bankruptcy with no loss at all! Want to save a million dollars or all of the assets you have worked hard to create? Buy this book NOW and put a comprehensive asset protection plan in place based on the author's recommendations.
