Most Westerners will know next to nothing of the Yamato, Japan's current imperial family. Neither do most Japanese. Much of Japan's modern history has been erased from postwar textbooks, and a whole generation has grown up knowing nothing of the Rape of Nanking, Pearl Harbor, the Second World War death camps, and countless other atrocities. All that remains are Hiroshima and Nagasaki, symbols of Japan's eternal innocence.

Sterling and Peggy Seagrave correct these falsehoods and expose the collusion and corruption that have been at the heart of the postwar Japanese economic miracle. And far from being a symbolic reminder of an ancient past, as the Japanese royal family is sometimes portrayed, the authors point out that it has been at the epicenter of venality and cruelty. Prince Chichibu, Emperor Hirohito's brother, turns out to have masterminded Golden Lily, the systematic looting of every country Japan occupied in the prewar years. Prince Yasuhiko was the brains behind the Rape of Nanking. And dear old Hirohito was so hands-on during the war that he could have halted Pearl Harbor. Moreover, the royal family was so comfortably in bed with the zaibatsu, the corporate ruling elite, that it made a fortune out of the war while the rest of the nation starved.

That none of this has come out before is only partly due to Japanese revisionism. We, too, have to share the blame. We had the evidence to try some of the imperial family as war criminals, but we chose not to. The Seagraves' book makes uncomfortable reading for all concerned. --John Crace, Amazon.co.uk

Book Description

In The Yamato Dynasty, Sterling Seagrave, who divulged the secrets of Mao Tse-tung and the ruthlessness of Chiang Kai-shek in the New York Times bestseller The Soong Dynasty, and his wife and longtime collaborator, Peggy, present the controversial, never-before-told history of the world’s longest-reigning dynasty–the Japanese imperial family–from its nineteenth-century origins through today. In the first collective biography of both the men and women of the Yamato Dynasty, the Seagraves take a controversial, comprehensive look at a family history that crosses two world wars, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the American occupation of Japan, and Japan’s subsequent phoenix-like rise from the ashes of the Second World War. The Yamato Dynasty tells the story of the powerful men who have stood behind the screen–the shoguns and financiers controlling the throne from the shadows–taking readers behind the walls of privilege and tradition and revealing, in uncompromising detail, the true nature of a dynasty shrouded in myth and legend

4 out of 5 stars Ruffling Some Old Feathers.......2006-03-01

The Seagraves' outstanding works on Japan (The Yamato Dynasty, Gold Warriors) have not only attracted hit and run reviews, but the Seagraves themselves have endured personal wire-taps and death threats for their trouble.

When does a supposedly poorly researched book result in death threats? (See The Rape of Nanking, by the late Iris Chang; Dark Alliance, by the late Gary Webb, etc.) Is The Yamato Dynasty a book that no library should buy? Maybe it's simply one that the public simply must not read.

It's required reading, in fact, for anyone interested in how the one-party Japanese state came into being, perpetually mired by corruption, incompetence, and cronyism; how more than a dozen Asian countries were looted by Japan from 1895 to 1945; how upon learning of the immense treasure from OSS/CIA uber-spook Edward Geary Lansdale, President Truman decided to keep the matter secret. Rather than returning the money to improverished nations as partial war reparation for years of genocide, torture, and slave labor, instead Truman, MacArthur and Co. created a bottomless, covert political action slush-fund. Yes, every U.S. president since Truman is implicated in this documented and verifiable cover-up. Marginalizing this fact as fodder for "conspiracy buffs" misses the point, and helps perpetuate the fraud.

Specifically, YD traces the confluence of interests among Japanese corporate cartels, the royal family, the court, and Genro (ministers and handlers) from the Meiji period through the end of the Pacific war. Although a handful of militarist war-criminals took the fall for Hirohito and the sponsors of the Heavenly Throne (Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Sumitomo and Yasuda, as well as newcomer Nissan), the Seagraves show in stark relief the nature and background of today's inept and unapologizing LDP-controlled Japanese government, and its support and collusion from covert elements among America's government and far-right.

1 out of 5 stars Back to square minus one.......2005-08-26

This was one of the few books on Japanese history available in my local library, so I read it second (the first was "Embracing Defeat," a history of the post-WWII Occupation) in trying to learn more about Japan.

Unfortunately, on the one subject I do know in detail, Pearl Harbor (any and all books by Gordon Prange are excellent) the authors were just plain wrong. The errors were all in one direction, too -- dismissing the dull facts in favor of kewl conspiracy theories. I couldn't find out where they got their errors, either, since the attributions both in the text and in footnotes were vague to the point of uselessness.

The result is that I've soaked in a gripping political thriller whose background I _know_ is distorted by an unknown amount in the direction of conspiracies -- and there's a lot of conspiring in this book. I'm not optimistic about how many of the other conspiracies are made up, too, and it's going to take me a lot of research in better books to come to an intelligent conclusion. Thanks so much. Very few books leave the reader feeling dumber than he started out.

1 out of 5 stars Gold, conspiracy, and the Japanese monarchy........2004-10-08

As some of the previous authors have already noted, this book is cleary marked for the conspiracy minded, and those who hate the Japanese monarchy. It is revisionist history at its extreme. Also it takes a lot of swipes at the Republican Party, even though it is a book about the Japanese monarchy. It is dedicated to Diane Fienstein, the liberal Democratic Senator from California. Where to begin?
Up to Chapter 9, this was a very believable book. It discussed the Meiji and Tashio Emperors and the first stages of Hirohito's rule. Then it became unbelievable. First it talked about how Roosevelt let Pearl Harbor happen. There have been many books about this but suffice to say, this is VERY REVISIONIST, and probably not true. Then it questions the courage of MacArthur. Most historians don't debate his courage, but the Seagraves thought they could throw it in there. It also suggested MacArthur was interested in the 1940 Republican nomination, when this is clearly not true. Then it talks about the 1936 coup attempt in Tokyo as being very liberal, when in fact they were very militeristic and anti democractic. This book takes swipes at Hoover as encouraging the corruption of the post war Japanese government and suggested he took a bribe of several million dollars. Hoover devoted most of his life to public service and charities, so it is hard to believe the Seagrave's nonsense. Then there were all the stories of the billions of dollars of gold and gems looted from the conquered Asian countries. There were so many billions tossed around as sure facts, that I lost track if there was that much gold in the world. The Seagraves then detail all the corruption of post war Japan and blame it on Americans, the monarchy, and the rich strata of Japan. It was hard to read this stuff when the documentation is just not there.
This is a hard book to swallow. Part of this book is history, and the last 100 pages is pure fiction. When an author puts one controversial subject in a book, it is open to discussion. These authors threw in literally a hundred controversial subjects (loot, gold, blame for Pearl Harbor, corruption,) and ask the reader to believe them. Please!!!! Stick to the facts Seagraves, and no more treasure stories. One gets sick of so much fantasy in a history book.

1 out of 5 stars What a waste.......2003-10-15

This is the first Seagraves book I have read and will be the last as this book leaves the reader wanting. When I first picked it up, I thought that tackling 1 Emperor in 1 book was a difficult challenge, but 5?! seemed a bit much. Turns out I was correct and not enough background was given on the early Emperors and the book should have been called "Hirohito". By far the most frustrating thing in this book was the lack of "footnotes"-I am not clear on what I was supposed to do; finish reading a page and then turn to the notes section and look up the page to see if there was a note and guess what the note was referring to? Or perhaps I was to read the entire book and then the notes and try to match with the rest of the book? Perhaps the Seagraves should learn about the "*" key to indicate a page where there is a footnote attached or perhaps using small numbers beside passages that require footnotes (what a novel concept!).
Having never read anything they have written before, I am not sure of their qualifications to comment on Japan, but it becomes apparent throughout the book, that their knowledge of Japan is quite superficial.
Definitely a non-read for anyone interested in an in-depth look at Japan from the Meiji era on.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting, Light Reading ... With Some Faults.......2003-08-22

I was looking for a history of the Japanese monarchy. There really doesn't seem to be much out there, aside from some individual biographies of Emperors Hirohito and Meiji, and Jerrold M. Packard's excellent Sons of Heaven. I thought the Seagraves' The Yamato Dynasty might be able to fill a gap and teach me something about Japan's reigning dynasty. It did that, I suppose. But it did not do it in a very objective way.

The tone of this book is clearly anti-monarchy. That is, anti-Japanese monarchy. In many places you get the impression that the authors would have been quite pleased if the entire Japanese monarchy and imperial family had been swept away in 1945 and replaced with a "republic."

Most of the book discusses Hirohito and his brothers and uncles, and all the nasty things they did. Fair enough; maybe Hirohito was a bad guy, maybe he should have been forced to abdicate, and tried as a war criminal. But then the Seagraves constantly repeat their point that "real" power in Japan has never been with the emperor at all, but with "the oligarchs" --- be they shoguns, leaders of the zaibatsu, or underworld "godfathers. If that is so, then how can the authors justify their apparent distaste for the monarchy? Or their charges against Hirohito and other recent emperors?

You can't have it both ways: either Hirohito and his relatives on the throne were powerful enough to commit the abuses they are accused of, or they were virtual puppets ("hostages" is the word the Seagraves use most often) who merely rubber-stamped whatever their masters behind the scenes told them to. So which is it? This book doesn't say, and doesn't provide enough evidence for either case. Or rather, the authors seem to take both sides, and they present a jumble of conflicting "evidence" which really doesn't help the reader to make a conclusion either way.

That is the major fault of this book: the authors failed to convince me one way or the other. I picked up their book undecided if Hirohito was a "war criminal" and when I put the book back on the shelf after having read it through, I am still just as undecided! On the bright side, I did learn some interesting trivia about Japan and its imperial family. But I think this book should have given me more than just that.

A more minor fault of this book, but one I must mention, is the authors' almost blatant anti-American tone. I've learned to overlook such attitudes in books, particularly ones written by Europeans, so it wasn't really a big deal. However, if they want their book to be considered "real" history instead of political diatribe, they really should tone it down just a bit.

I'll give this book 3 stars for research, another star for interesting writing; but I'll subtract one star because the book did not give me much beyond some trivia, and another star because the authors failed to make any convincing arguments to prove their point (whatever their point was!) I will say that the book made interesting light reading for summer vacation.

For years Heidi Howkins, a young climber, nursed an ambitious dream: to reach the summit of K2--the world's second-tallest and one of its least accessible peaks--without using oxygen. She eventually did, though not without plenty of scary moments and much cause for reflection.

Howkins, addressing the reader through stories told to a bemused hitchhiker, reports much more than the sheer achievement of her ascents of K2, notable though they were. Along the way she tells him, and us, of a failed marriage, of the logistical nightmares that accompany any expedition to remote places, of the endless conflicts that can ensue when climbing partners are not carefully vetted. As the lone woman on her K2 climbs, Howkins had more than the usual problems to contend with, though those problems--bad weather, scary bus rides along the Karakoram Highway, the constant presence of death--were hard enough. All of them get an airing in Howkins's book, but for all that, her sense of adventure far outweighs the many downsides.

Why take on such a challenge in the first place? A friend warned her about trying to explain, and Howkins toys with a few explanations: the rush gained by conquering fear, denying the fragility of human existence, and "embracing survival with gusto." In the end, though, her best explanation is this: "When you get to the top of K2, there's nowhere left to go. There is a cessation of passion, of the desire to move forever upwards. There is emptiness, and the closure of a circle. You are back where you started. You're at peace." --Gregory McNamee

      Book Description

Among the mountaineering elite, K2 is the ultimate challenge. Everest is higher -- by just 785 feet -- but K2 is steeper, tougher, and deadlier: Everest has been summitted more than 1,300 times, while only 183 men and 5 women have reached K2's fearsome peak since it was first conquered in 1954, and of those, at least 21 never made it back down.

On her first effort in 1998, Howkins became one of the handful of women to attempt the peak. On her second attempt in 2000, she was determined to once again climb this daunting peak alpine-style -- without the aid of porters or supplemental oxygen -- a feat accomplished by very few mountaineers. She knew the risks as well as anyone...but even her long experience could not prepare her for what happened high on K2's deadly slopes.

Highlighted by evocative photographs, K2 is a compelling chronicle of high-mountain adventure and personal achievement. It's also an unusually articulate meditation upon risk, reward, and responsibility -- made all the more poignant and immediate by the fact that only a few years ago, Alison Hargreaves's death on K2's flanks provoked a storm of controversy about the morality of trying to combine motherhood and a world-class mountaineering career. "I have to be ready for whatever challenge I may face," writes Howkins, a single mother, as she explores the ethics of her passion. "My daughter gives me a desperate kind of strength."

      3 out of 5 stars K2: A Women's Quest for the Summit.......2007-01-12

      K2: A Women's Quest for the Summit

The approach to which Heidi Howkins told us her story was both atypical and captivating. By obtaining a permit, permitting Howkins to attempt the deadly slopes of K2, her fist attempt in 1998 was am unmitigated failure. However, Howkins became one of the first women to attempt this perilous peak. On her second attempt in 2000, she was determined to once again mount the summit of K2 but this time without the aid of porters or supplemental oxygen (an accomplishment made by very few mountaineers). Although Howkins knew the risks of her exigent goal of the summit, not even her long experience of climbing could prepare her for such events that occurred high on K2. This book contains multiple photographs of K2 that show what a physical and personal feat it would be to climb to the summit of this mountain successfully. While on this expedition Howkins explores through her emotions as a single mother, a confused climber, and the subject of her last husband Zee's abuse. As she searches for her true passion for climbing she uses her inner strength that is given to her by her daughter to attempt K2, hoping to accomplish her task.
When I first decided to read this book, by reading the title I assumed it would be about the struggles of climbing and techniques used to reach the summit of the mountain. Although Heidi explains some of her expeditions the book really explains her personal life and how she uses climbing as an escape to her chaotic emotions. My impression of K2 is it has a confusing plot line. As Heidi explains her expeditions on other mountains in the Middle East to a hitchhiker that she picked up, she gets into her expedition on K2 and all the events that occurred without finishing her stories about her expeditions that she was explaining before. This book is both very interesting and emotional. In Inherit the Wind, the young lady Rachel also had emotional problems like Heidi. Heidi's emotions were between her abusive husband Zee and her new lover that had become her climbing partner, where Rachel had emotional problems between her father and her current lover Bertrum Cates. The social value of this book is the information that is told by Heidi how to deal with her fearful emotions. Teenagers and older adults could connect with Heidi and they can compare their emotions and insights to Heidi's.
This book is well written in great detail; however the organization of this book where Heidi talks about her previous expeditions confuses and quickly looses the reader. I would suggest this book to teens or adult readers because of the high vocabulary level and because of the harsh events that occur high up on this treacherous mountain.

      1 out of 5 stars Misleading Title.......2003-11-22

When you read a title that reads "K2 a quest for the summit" you expect a story about how somebody got to the summit, Heidi did not. This is the story of a woman searching for herself who happens who like mountaineering. I wanted a book about mountaineering and got the troubles and tribulations of a woman in search of herself. Bad read.

4 out of 5 stars Quest for the Summit.......2002-10-27

When one thinks of female athletes, female scientists, female bomber pilots such as Kelly Flinn, one thinks of them as being successful and therefore confident and independent, and vice versa. It comes as a shock and a disappointment to read that they stay in abusive relationships for more than a day. Yet such is the case with Heidi Howkins, who stayed in an abusive relationship with her husband Zee for way too long (even when he'd once tried to kill her she stayed with him because he threatened to take her daughter away to Syria).

She tells that story and more in K2: A Quest For The Summit. Eventually she frees herself from Zee, she rises above the obstacles placed in her way from other climbers in this male-dominated world. She's a good writer and tells the story well.

It's not a story of one climb but of several, it's a series of memoirs, really. Why does Howkins use the hitchiker 'Hiddle' as a foil - someone to tell her stories to? Other reviewers of this book have dismissed him as a fictional character, (and a bad device at that) - yet nowhere in the book does Howkins say that he is...so why do they assume so? Because it's impossible to believe a man could sit in a car with a woman and listen to HER talk? Pay attention to HER talk? If Hiddle the hitch-hiker is a fiction, why did Howkins think it necessary to use this foil? Well, their conversations do illuminate her stories the more...for example in the beginning with his talk of 'Ananku' or trouble. She is capable of learning from her adventures, long after they have passed.

''Go ahead, I'm listening.'' she has Hiddle say. One wonders if in the real world she ever had a man who said that to her, and meant it.

      3 out of 5 stars A Mixed Effort.......2002-03-06

Ms. Howkins is a professional mountain climber who is not afraid to take on the tough ones. She has attempted K2, the roughest of the big ones; Gasherbrum II, the north face of Kanchenjunga, and Everest without supplementary oxygen. In other words, she's won her spurs.

The narrative device is the author telling her story and thoughts to a hitchhiker. This is supposedly the staging area for each chapter. It is not a successful mechanism and seems needlessly contrived. The book takes a few scenes from Kanchenjunga where Ms. Howkins found romance with a Spanish climber, a brief narrative of her first K2 climb with her ex-husband, who appears to be a certified mad man, and the remainder is devoted to her second K2 climb, Project K2000.

The book badly needs organization; the reader is frequently confused about what expedition she is talking about, and continuity is completely absent. While reading, I had the impression she was lifting passages from her private journals and entering them in a scattershot fashion. I later found out that almost the entire section on Project K2000 had first appeared in Mountain Zone. The author barely characterizes her teammates on Project K2000; she doesn't even give their last names. It is as if Ms. Howkins was confronting faceless enemies. I have read many times about how difficult it is for women climbers to be accepted in the male fraternity of mountaineers, but the treatment Ms. Howkins endured was appalling: ignoring her, referring to her by obscene names, trashing her tent. I couldn't believe well-educated, civilized men would behave in such a fashion toward the one lone woman on their team. She states that if she had been a wife or companion of one of the members, there probably would have been less friction.

I found Ms. Howkins likeable, smart and perceptive with a flair for the lyrical. However, the book lacks a focus and seems hastily put together. C-

      1 out of 5 stars Bad read.......2002-02-04

This is the worst mountianeering book I have ever read. Heidi Howkins may have accomplished great feats in her mountianeering career, but writng books is not one. This book is more of an account of the mess she has made of her personal life, rather than high adventure. If you are looking to read about the beauty and tragedy of K2, you will not find it here. You will find failure, and blame. It is a horrible jumbled account of several experiances, several of which do not belong in print.

        Book Description

The Tattoo History Source Book is an exhaustingly thorough, lavishly illustrated collection of historical records of tattooing throughout the world, from ancient times to the present. Collected together in one place, for the first time, are texts by explorers, journalists, physicians, psychiatrists, anthropologists, scholars, novelists, criminologists, and tattoo artists. A brief essay by Gilbert sets each chapter in an historical context. Topics covered include the first written records of tattooing by Greek and Roman authors; the dispersal of tattoo designs and techniques throughout Polynesia; the discovery of Polynesian tattooing by European explorers; Japanese tattooing; the first 19th-century European and American tattoo artists; tattooed British royalty; the invention of the tattooing machine; and tattooing in the circus. The anthology concludes with essays by four prominent contemporary tattoo artists: Tricia Allen, Chuck Eldridge, Lyle Tuttle, and Don Ed Hardy. The references at the end of each section will provide an introduction to the extensive literature that has been inspired by the ancient-but-neglected art of tattooing. Because of its broad historical context, The Tattoo History Source Book will be of interest to the general reader as well as art historians, tattoo fans, neurasthenics, hebephrenics, and cyclothemics.

        5 out of 5 stars Invaluable.......2005-05-12

As an archaeologist and a tattoo enthusiast, this is one of my all time favorite books on tattoos. I had been a fan of the web site version for some time and was glad to see that the book was so beautifully designed. But design aside, this is a "history book" that is unique in that it is NOT a narrative description of tattoos through the ages. Instead, it is exactly what it says on the cover -- a source book. Original source material, invaluable to researchers, is presented undiluted, in long quotations, with original illustrations. If you're looking for a plethora of modern tattoo designs that you can take to the shop on your next visit, look elsewhere. If you want to know about early tattooing all around the globe, then look no further.

5 out of 5 stars the book to grab if you can have only one on tattooing.......2003-07-13

Were you a fan of tattoing who had been stranded on that proverbial desert isle and allowed only half dozen favorite musical discs and but one or two books, it's a good bet that you would want Steve Gilbert's "Tattoo History: A Source Book" to keep you company.

A somewhat uneven quality of writing and of academic documentation mark this book. Even so, "Tattoo History: A Source Book" is an impressive work that reflects serious research, and it is a tour de force in comfortably handling material that ranges widely over time and space. On a subject that is so often dominated by photographs and essays that emphasize above all Japanese-style tattooing, it is a delight to learn as well of the long tradition of tattooing in the Pacific Isles, of the role tattoos played in the ancient Middle East, and of early 20th-century tattooing in the West. Gilbert's extensive use of source material--efectively translated from many languages--lends the book its gravitas and contributes significantly to his success in instilling in the reader an increased sense of respect for the tattoo arts.

Finally I should note that even if this book did not open new vistas for the reader, the essays which bookend "Tattoo History" would alone be worth the price of admission. Gilbert's opener, "Confessions of a Tattoo Addict," although but two pages in length, is an evocative essay that relates a fascination with tattoos to his coming of age in the 1940s. Meanwhile, the lengthier closing essay by Don Ed Hardy documents the resurgence of tattooing over the past several decades, the cultural cross-fertilization that has occurred, and the slow but growing acceptance of tattooing as a legitimate art form by the more conventional arts world.

        5 out of 5 stars Instant classic.......2002-08-12

Not just a compendium of illustrations, this collection of essays, interviews, historical accounts and yes, some nice pictures, pulls together a great deal of the cultural history and tradition associated with tattooing. Well written, very wide-reaching and very entertaining. Gilbert is careful to detail where all his information comes from, adding to the work's authority and allowing interested readers to look more deeply into specific topics. This is a winner.

        5 out of 5 stars awesome book!.......2001-04-03

While I can not even come close to the great review that the previous reviewer wrote, I can in fact tell you that this is one of the most interesting books that I have read on the history of tattoos. I myself have 3 tattoos and since I got them, I have been enthralled with the history that surrounds them as well as trying to figure out where the stigma that is currently attached to them came from. I sat down to just leaf through this book and I had to read the entire thing, it was so completely interesting. If you have any interest in tattooing at all, this is a must read!

        5 out of 5 stars A must-have for tattoo enthusiasts!.......2001-03-07

Tattoo enthusiasts will know Steve Gilbert's "Tattoo History Source Book" from Tattoos.com.

Now the online version is available in print, with some additional information and photographs, published by Juno Books, a company founded by one of the former owners that gave us all the fantastic "ReSearch" publications. (Make sure you don't miss out on their "Modern Primitives"!)

Gilbert's book is unique and absolutely fantastic, the most in-depth book I have ever seen on the history of tattooing. It covers an incredible amount of historical and geographical aspects of tattooing (from New Zealand to Siberia and almost anywhere in between; though, unfortunately, the African Continent is completely left out).

Here are some of the chapters you'll find: - Origins - Discovery - Islands in the Pacific - Worlds Old & New (North America; South America; England, etc.) - Other Worlds (The Circus; Arabs, Jews & Christians; etc.) - Contemporary Contributions

At the very end of the book you'll find a recent interview with tattoo researcher Tricia Allen and an article entitled "Current Events" by none other than Don Ed Hardy, who has done so much for the development of tattooing over the past decades. (Don't miss out on his publications through his company Hardy Marks; incl. all the "Tattootime" issues.)

If you're interested in historical aspects of tattooing, this is the source book for you.
