Customer Reviews:
No, no, no!.......2004-06-20
Very, very detailed account of the life of Queen Victoria. I appreciate the author's effort, but this book is a failure!
This book TRIED to be a political AND intimate biography but it just didn't work. The reader is overwhelmed with minor details about the politics of Victoria's reign without getting the big picture. All the details are wonderful, but the author writes in such a confuzing manner that it's hard to follow everything. In the end, we are left with a vague idea about the events of her reign.
There was an alarmingly small amount of information on Victoria's personal relationships. I don't know what else to say because I honestly can't recall learning anything new! Stanley ignored Victoria's family and it makes for horrible reading.
Honestly, this book is a very boring read. Do not waste your time even trying to consume and understand this "intimate" biography.
An intimate look at Britain's most famous queen.......2000-01-22
The author does an excellent job of detailing Queen Elizabeth's life, from girlhood to her death. Throughout the book are the Queen's own letters, furthing our insight into this dynamic female ruler. After finishing this book, I felt as though I knew Her Royal Highness personally!

Book Description
Stu Hart, the patriarch of modern-day wrestling, has battled, innovated, and entertained for more than half a century. This no-holds-barred account offers an insider's look at the first family of wrestling, from Hart's days in the ring to the careers of his sons Bret, now rising to the pinnacle of sports entertainment, and Owen, whose horrific accidental death in the ring led to a multimillion-dollar lawsuit. Some of the most formidable names in wrestling have begun their careers under Hart's tutelage, including Rowdy Roddy Piper, Jesse "The Body" Ventura, and Lance Storm. This biography explores the highs and lows of one of wrestling's most colorful and remarkable figures.
Customer Reviews:
If you like Pro Wrestling, read it........2007-03-05
It's a good book to read if you like Professional Wrestling. You might see what it's really all about and get an indepth view of this world and the family of the Harts.
Interesting Story of a Legendary Man.......2003-11-06
Although the WWE has become somewhat redundant and rather boring nowadays, I have to admit that there was a time that I followed professional wrestling quite seriously.
One of my favourite athletes of all time was Bret "The Hitman" Hart, a hero and a role model to a whole generation of wrestling fans, and at one time, the pride of Canada in the squared circle. His brother, Owen, was also amazing in his own right, and I'll never forget the time in 1993 at the Winnipeg Arena when, dressed as the Blue Blazer, he slapped me five as he made his way to the ring. These are some of the reasons I was especially intrigued to learn the story of the patriarch of Canada's first family of wrestling, Stu Hart.
The author, Marsha Erb, a former journalist for the Saskatoon StarPhoenix and the Saint John, New Brunswick Telegraph Journal, did an excellent job of telling the story of the unique life and times of this legend.
Stu's life has not been an easy one, from his childhood, where, at times, he was living in a tent in the dead cold of the prairie winters, to his rise to becoming one of the most prominent figures in the wrestling business, to the loss of his youngest son, Owen, his story has just about everything. It is truly an inspirational story of the power of will and determination.
It also documents the less uplifting side of Stu Hart's story, which are the problems that come with living a public life. A lot of the dirt on the infighting within the Hart family, and the tough times they have been through are also documented in this book.
The only real weakness in this book is the fact that the stories sometimes feel a bit rushed, but I would imagine that they would most likely have to be, considering all the tales that a man like Stu would have to tell if only we had the time.
Unfortunately, the book ends on a rather gloomy note, which I will not give away, but some that know the story of the Hart family may have a good guess.
Through and through, this book is enlightening, well put together, entertaining, and should not be seen as something that is written just for sports entertainment fans. It would make a great read for just about anyone.
Writing doesn't match the subject.......2002-11-23
I've been a fan of the Hart family wrestlers since I was a kid. I have fond memories of watching the Bret Hart and Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart on Maple Leaf Wrestling. The story of the Hart family is the story of modern day wrestling. From the small, regional promoters to the advent of the WWF to the steroid abuse to the over the top stunts that got tragically out of hand, there is no aspect of professional wresling that hasn't impacted directly on Stu Hart and his extended family.
His life makes for a fascinating story. It's a shame that Martha Erb's prose is not half as interesting as Stu Hart.
I found her writing style to be overly drawn out and somewhat flat. Too often, I found myself struggling to get through chapters that ought to have been riveting. It would have been much more entertaining if she had simply recorded a few hours of Stu Hart talking and then transcribed it to the page.
Overall, this is a good book, but not as good as it should be.
A family story worth telling.......2002-11-22
Reading this book, I felt as part of a Canadian explorer's life. The book is as much about a family struggling together, as it is about wrestling in Canada. There are many startling stories, just all about Stu Hart, A toughman in the ring, while at the same time the family's seamstress... You could see the normalcy of the family, in the middle of wrestling's unique environment. Truly a work of love, memorializing a great man. This is a must read to aspiring wrestlers, as they could see the real man behind the gimmick...
Great comprehensive history into the life of Stu Hart.......2002-08-16
This book is more than just another book about pro wrestling,
or a pro wrestler. It's about Stu Hart, patriarch of the most
successful family in pro wrestling. If you're an avid fan of
pro wrestling, or a casual one, this book is for you. Last
year, Stu's youngest daughter, Diana, released a book about
her family, called Under The Mat: Inside Wrestling's Greatest Family.
Amazon, didn't carry the book, and it turned out
that decision turned out to be the correct one, as the
book has been recalled by the publisher, HBFenn, and is
no longer available. The book was the source of bitter
animosity, and led to a lawsuit being filed by Owen's
widow, Martha, about content in that particular book.
Needless to say, this book doesn't delve into the murky
side and shouldn't be a source of controversy like the
aforementioned book was. I am one of the lucky ones
who has a signed copy of this book (author and subject
both autographed the book).
This book describes Stu Hart's upbringing as a poor
Prairie boy, and his subsequent journey into the world of pro
wrestling. He was born in rural Saskatchewan in May 1915.
He endured hardship with his family when his father was
in charge. Jonathan Wong's review for this title provides
an excellent skeletal framework of the book itself.
It does cover his early athletic career as an Olympic
hopeful for Canada's wrestling team, which was cut short
by World War II, and also his days with the Edmonton
Eskimos professional football team in Canada. There is
also discussion of the events that led to the formation
of Stampede Wrestling, and predecessors like Wildcat
Wrestling and Big Time Wrestling, as well as programs,
like Mat Time, which was a preview show shown on Fridays
before the news, and a Sunday TV program as well. It
also discusses the tactics rival promoters used to
try to buy him out. Eventually Stu bought them out.
His relationship with Helen is discussed in vivid
detail, from the courtship to his mother-in-law's
disapproval at first. She felt Helen deserved better.
However, eventually Stu was able to win over Helen,
whom he affectionately referred to as Tiger.
This book talks about the good times and lean times
of Stampede Wrestling, as well as the pivotal role of
a man who would play an integral part of the history
of the promotion, Ed Whalen. Ed Whalen, was originally
considering a career in medicine when he was in
university, but he eventually ended up in journalism,
and his nasal twang and unabashed support for the
babyfaces over heels every time made him a legend.
Discussion of the Bret Hart-Shawn Michaels 1997
Survivor Series match itself, and the circumstances
involved surrounding the aftermath are brought to
the forefront. There is also detailed discusssion
surrounding the events of Owen Hart's death, which
occurred during a May 1999 WWF (as the WWE was
known at the time) PPV, and the ensuing legal
fallout is discussed, as well as Stu's decision to
shut down Stampede Wrestling in 1984.
As Jonathan has pointed out there is friction in
the Hart family. Bruce, Diana, and Ellie are part
of one faction, while Bret heads up an opposing
faction. These factions are with regards how to
deal with Vince McMahon and family after Owen
died. It is also thought that Bruce, who wanted
to revive Stampede Wrestling, was upset at Bret,
who didn't. There is discussion about when the
WWF (as the WWE was known back then) came to
Alberta in 2001 for Monday Night Raw and
SmackDown!, and the 10 minute ovation Stu
received when he was announced in his hometown
in Calgary. Bret opposed his father going to
RAW, based on the bitter animosity.
Other topics discussed include Stu Hart's
legendary Dungeon, and how he made grown men,
many bigger than himself, howl in pain when
undergoing training there. It was also an
effective discipline tool for rearing his
children. Stu is from the old school of
pro wrestling thought...so he is a bit on
the conservative side with a strong moral
fibre. He didn't complain very much even
though he knew he was getting cheated, as
in his dealings with the City of Calgary,
regarding his parcels of land. The Hart
House itself is a topic for discussion.
It's a grand mansion located on the
outskirts of Calgary and sits on an
attractive parcel of land.
Another interesting topic that is discussed is
his relationship with other sports superstars,
especially heavyweight boxers like Joe Louis,
Muhammad Ali, Jack Dempsey and Rocky Marciano, who
worked with him in some capacity or met him.
The boxer-wrestler debate is brought up again in
this book, but I will let the reader decide in his
or her own mind what would happen.
I would recommend this book over Diana
Hart's book for several reasons. This book is
more accurate, and doesn't really air the
family's dirty laundry, like Diana's
tell-all book last year. Finally, you will
be able to get this book, while Diana's book
has been recalled.
This book delves into Stu Hart the man
at all levels: promoter, wrestler, husband
and father, and distinguished recepient of
the Order of Canada. The book ends with
discussion of Helen's passing and the
memorial service, and how Stu and Helen's
cat deal with it after she died. It's a
pretty fitting end to the book.

Book Description
The musical has been called "the most popular form of entertainment in the world." This work examines the subjects, themes, and contemporary relevance of Hollywood musicals through their long popularity, placing each show in historical and political context and analyzing it in detail.
A chapter is devoted to how Golddiggers of 1933 (1933) and Stand Up and Cheer (1934) deal with the economic crises of the Depressions. Another addresses race issues by examining the prevalence of blackface minstrelsy in the 1930s and 1940s, looking at productions like Swing Time (1936) and Dixie (1943). Rock and roll culture, which started in the 1950s and threatened America with teenage sex and rebellion, is addressed through such hits as Girl Crazy (1943), Bye Bye Birdie (1963), and Grease (1978).
The work also explores dance as a signifier of character, the geography of musicals (such as New York or "the South"), fantasy settings, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, and the musical biopic (mentioning biographies of such figures as Ziegfeld, Cohan, Rogers and Hart, Cole Porter, and Jerome Kern). A later chapter discusses intertextuality in such shows as Singin' in the Rain (1952), which refers to many earlier musicals; Kiss Me Kate (1953) which refers to Taming of the Shrew; and All That Jazz (1970) which refers to the life and work of Bob Fosse. The work concludes with an examination of the continuing popularity of the musical with such hits as Moulin Rouge (2001) and Chicago (2002).

The first full-length translation in English of an essential work of postmodernist thought
Customer Reviews:
Baudrillard's Great Science Fiction Novel.......2007-04-12
This is Baudrillard's most famous work, and indeed, it is a must-read for those who wish to acquaint themselves with the basics of postmodern thought. It is beautifully written, and comes across like a sort of non-fiction equivalent of William Gibson's Neuromancer with its glittering display of polished, gleaming words patterned into strange, mercurial sentences that are not always easy to follow. But, as with Finnegans Wake, it is not so much the particular thought of the moment that counts, as it is the impression and impact upon the mental sensorium of the total experience. Baudrillard is a dazzling word-smith and it is likely that you will come away from this book with one or two new words to add to your vocabulary.
One of the things, of course, that has made this book so popular is its visual quotation in the science fiction film The Matrix, but I must say that the book does little towards an elucidation of that film. Indeed, Baudrillard himself has stated his dislike of the film (see the book "The Conspiracy of Art" for his comments), and he has stated how it compares less favorably with films built around similar themes such as The Truman Show, Mulholland Drive and others (I think David Cronenberg's Existenz is a much better take on the virtual reality theme. The Matrix seems cliched by comparison, especially since Cronenberg was already there first with his early 80's classic Videodrome). The theme of hyperreality displacing the real is not really what The Matrix is all about (there is too little in it irony for that; and no ambiguity; instead it concerns how technology robs the human soul of its spiritual potentialities) but it is what Simulacra and Simulation is about.
The French philosophers are fond of developing a single metaphysical concept and then exploring its ramifications in numerous books and their sequels: Debord's "Spectacle," for instance, is essentially equivalent to Baudrillard's hyperreality; Foucault's "episteme," though a completely different idea, is nonetheless monolithic in Foucault's thought. And much of Baudrillard's writings are an exploration of his concept of the hyperreal and how it has displaced the real.
The point of the book is that we postmoderns live inside a media-generated dome that seals us off from the "real" world. Indeed, we are so convinced by our own fabrications that we can no longer differentiate reality from its simulacrum. When spending money on gambling in Las Vegas, are we really losing all that money, or is it just a part of the "game"?
The best essay in the book is "The Precession of the Simulacra," and it is also the longest. I saved it for last and began with the shorter essays. Baudrillard's piece on J.G. Ballard's novel Crash is one of the best in the collection, as is his essay on "Hypermarket and Hypercommodity" and "The Beauborg Effect." Each of these pieces feels more like reading a science fiction novel than anything else but, let's face it, we live in a world that is stranger than science fiction. It takes an artist to make the contours of such a world visible to our perception, and Baudrillard does a fine job of this. He is, however, less successful with his pitiful one page ramblings on Apocalypse Now, which is disappointing and sheds almost no light on Coppola's masterpiece. (For this, the reader would do well to consult Ebert's Celluloid Heroes & Mechanical Dragons).
I confess that there are paragraphs I did not understand and words that sound as if they are made up, but this is actually true of most authors who have something profound to say (Lewis Mumford, for instance, or Heidegger). But Simulacra and Simulation is an important work and should be read despite its difficulties. Read it just the way you would a poem by Holderlin or Rilke. That is, don't try too hard to understand it, just let the imagery sink into your consciousness and enjoy the alterations that it produces upon you.
--John David Ebert
author, Celluloid Heroes & Mechanical Dragons: Film as the Mythology of Electronic Society
The Key to Understanding Jean Baudrillard.......2007-01-09
Baudrillard's classic is neither easy to read, nor is it the last word in continental postmodernism. It is also replete with ideas of questionable merit. So, why I have rated it with fives stars? Because buried within its pages, among the dross and the drivel, are enough intellectual gems to make the entire exercise more than worthwhile! Even with its flaws, Simulacra and Simulation reveals Jean Baudrillard to be one of the great thinkers of the twentieth century. Any person deeply interested in critically understanding the postmodern, media saturated era in which we live, needs to read this book.
The most useless book I have ever read........2006-09-19
Hardly being a serious look into the (supposed) simulated world, Simulacra and Simulation unnecessarily confuses, compounds, and over-estimates the reality of simulation, and implies simulation in virtually everything while failing to give any real evidence or examples for this phenomenon. Through and through, Baudrillard fails to adequately define his terms, concerns, and sources for his critiques. While never settling on one particular point, his arbitrary method of critiquing never moves beyond the realm of opinion. Critical analysis of the subject matter (whatever that is) is never applied, instead being sacrificed for ever more obscured superficial observations. Baudrillard gives us no example as to the cause of his concerns (whatever those may be) let alone giving us any real solutions as to how we may pierce through our alleged self created illusions. Nor does he give us any real insight as to how these critiques can be applied in any useful way to our education or our daily life. If this is what is passing for philosophy today, I can only imagine how useless the field will become in fifty years if we continue to look to Baudrillard as the top of his field. Superfluous and meaningless double-talk is all you will get out of this useless excuse for a book. For anyone interested in reading "Simulacra and Simulation", I would sooner recommend Dr. Seuss "Green Eggs and Ham." You will have more fun reading it, and you will probably learn more as well.
Where is real?.......2006-09-08
What is real anymore? Where can I find it at? In our mass-multi-media world, is there really anything "real" anywhere? Or is it all just one large simulation? I do not claim to be on the Postmodern bandwagon, or to 100% agree with their ideas and thoughts, but this was a very interesting read that will possibly make you ask "What is real?"
Jean Baudrillard is a Rockstar.......2006-04-15
Jean Baudrillard is not practical. He discusses the death of the real in an often persuasive way, but offers no conclusions as to how this should affect the practice of cultural theory or human behavior. Nor does he offer suggestions for preventing the death of the real--he just wallows in it.
Still, Baudrillard sure is a hoot. I love reading him the way I love reading J.G. Ballard and watching David Cronenberg movies. He offers a great, cynical rush: highly recommended to masturbatory pessimists and fans of new wave science-fiction.

giftwrap paper .......2006-07-19
If you're like me you have a difficult time wrapping things. Some people don't have the patience to do so, and admittedly I'm one of those people! You can't deny the beautiful and original flower designs on this particular giftwrap paper, so I recommend you buy and use it whenever you have to wrap a gift for someone. So what if you don't do a good job wrapping it- it's the thought that counts.
