      5 out of 5 stars Great read.......1999-08-03

This should win a Pulitzer this year. The content is tremendous, full of insightful garb about the most cantankerous coach to ever pace the hardwood sideline. Plus, one writer in particular really bolsters this literary masterpiece, James D. Horne. Buy this book while supplies last.

4 out of 5 stars Good view of the career of Norm Stewart at Mizzou.......1999-07-08

This is a very good view of the overall career of Norm Stewart at Mizzou. It is unique in it is a compilation of articles from the Columbia Tribune starting with a game in February, 1956 through his retirement this past April, 1999. For the avid Missouri basketball fan it will bring back alot of fond memories and things long forgotten. For the newer fan, it will point out just what kind of coach Norm Stewart was and bring out a side of him alot of people don't know about. For just the rabid basketball fan, it is an interesting look at some of the great upsets by Missouri basketball teams, such as over Notre Dame in 1980 in the NCAA and Louisville in 1982, along with the battles within the Big 8. It's an easy read with alot of good pictures.

During World War II, James A. Dunn was a signalman on the USS Mason, a destroyer escort and the only ocean-going warship in the American navy to employ African Americans in positions other than cook or messmate. Manned by African American seamen (and commanded by white officers), the USS Mason made ten crossings of the Atlantic from 1944 to 1945, escorting convoys of merchant ships to and from the United Kingdom and North African, and operating in hunter-killer groups searching for German submarines. Dunn kept a day-to-day diary during his spare time on board the Masson. He recorded the daily life aborad the ship, including the duties and pastimes that made shipboard life endurable. The diary also reveals what it meant to be an African American in a white navy within a segregated American society -- including the shipboard tensions, cooperation and sense of unity. On Board The USS Mason is a unique and invaluable contribution to the growing body of World War II literature and eye-witness accounts, and will be of immense interest to students of Black Studies and American military history.

The crew of USS Mason's action in the North Atlantic was a showing of a well disiplined well led brave group of men. Being from Boston, Mass. I am aware of thier heroic actions, the DE Mason was built here at the Charlestown Navy Yard when I was about 6 years old. I personally feel the Captain on down took a real royal screwing. The Captain's log showed reason enough to be reconized but it was ignored by some predjudice Brass higher up the chain of command. 5 out of 5 stars It's as close as you're going to get to "knowing" James.......2006-05-08

James Mason's sister-in-law, Diana De Rosso, was related to this great actor by virtue of the fact that she was half sister to his first wife, Pamela. It's a sympathetic accounting of his life and relationships - far more so that Sheridan Morley's "Odd Man Out." His train-wreck of a marriage to Pam is the focal point of a good deal of the book, and when the divorce finally comes, it's extremely painful and costly to James. As a fan of his, reading this book just increased my frustration with his career choices as I feel he could have done lots more interesting film work had he been better managed or been more realistic about film making in the US. There are a few more juicy personal tidbits, but the man seemed to be basically unknowable. I wish she had gone into more detail about how he prepared himself for some of his more stellar roles. (Her telling of James practicing "counting money" for his role in Five Fingers gave me a chuckle since I had always marvelled at how he could look like he was accurately counting his bills while simultaneously holding a conversation.) This book is an absolute must if you are a fan.

5 out of 5 stars The inimitable Mr. Mason.......2004-04-09

This is an excellent effort at examining the life of the mellifluous-voiced British actor, James Mason. The book is paced well and there is a fair amount of information on his early personal life, especially regarding his unusual first marriage to the ascerbic Pamela Mason. Diana De Rosso undoubtedly knew Mason very well, which was a difficult thing to do, considering he was a remote and rather shy man.

The highlights of the book are the chapters on first wife Pamela. Though Pamela Mason was a loud-mouthed and shrewish adulteress, she was also extremely witty and interesting in her own right. Anyone who recalls her appearences on L.A. TV shows from the 60's and 70's will still chuckle at her endless tirades, usually ending with the predictable sentence, "James was so dull."

This book actually provides convincing evidence that James *was* rather boring. Mason comes off as depressed, rigid, indecisive and inordinately unhappy. at least until he meets Clarissa, his second wife. He makes many poor choices and instead of getting over them and getting on with his life, he broods about the negative consequences of his actions. For example, he moves to Hollywood and instantly detests California and American life, yet he inexplicably continues to live in the States for another 15 years.

It is never explained why James stayed with Pamela for so many years, even when he was miserable in her presence and unhappy living in America. When he finally does divorce her, he ends up shilling out millions in alimony and making a succession of wretched movies in order to pay off Pamela.

Ultimately, the real tragedy is that a man as intelligent, urbane and handsome as James Mason (not to mention his stupendous voice!) handled his career in such a haphazard way. He was a marvelous screen actor, but wasted his talent in many potboilers. This book doesn't really explain these poor choices and doesn't reveal enough about Mason's inner life, probably because he was so unknowable. The chapters on his waning years and death were excellent, however. Because I love James Mason, I'll give this five stars, my bias showing outrageously.

            Book Description

Why are so many of the superhero myths tied up with loss, often violent, of parents or parental figures? What is the significance of the dual identity? What makes some superhuman figures "good" and others "evil"? Why are so many of the prime superheroes white and male? How has the superhero evolved over the course of the 20th and early 21st centuries? And how might the myths be changing?

Why is it that the key superhero archetypes - Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, the X-Men - touch primal needs and experiences in everyone? Why has the superhero moved beyond the pages of comics into other media?

All these topics, and more, are covered in this lively and original exploration of the reasons why the superhero - in comic books, films, and TV - is such a potent myth for our times and culture.

3 out of 5 stars lacks good, hard, concise facts.......2004-09-24

Where are most superheroes orphaned at an early age? What is the purpose of groups of superheroes? Why does Batman have a preadolescent sidekick? Why are there also superheroines?

I'm afraid I can't answer any of these questions. The author of this book discusses all of these questions, but his discussion is a little too hazy for me.

3 out of 5 stars interesting light reading.......2004-06-22

I am a fan of comic book superheroes; I try to see all the major Hollywood movies on superheroes like X-Men, Batman, Superman, etc... I am also a fan of the Sunday comics. But I have never read a comic book. So I picked this book up last month thinking it would be a good way to learn about comic book lore and history. This book accomplishes that. It covers the origins (and conclusions) of all the major comic book heroes. It also goes a little into the history of the authors / creators / publishers of these comic books.

The pace is quick, the book is short, and most teenagers should be able to read the whole book in a weekend. But as a piece of literary criticism, it is okay. This book to the comic book genre is like having one Cliff Notes book for all of Shakespeare; you sacrifice depth for breadth. Overarching themes are emphasized over storylines of the individual comic book heroes. There are a lot of interesting facts though; such as Harry Potter being an orphan, just like Batman, Superman, and the Hulk. In all, this book is worth reading if you have the time to spare. I definitely would recommend it as reading material for a college class on say 20th century American culture, or Mass Media / Entertainment.

Using real-world data and examples, this high-level book shows practitioners how to develop a common set of mathematical and statistical tools for hedging in various markets and then outlines several hedging strategies with the historical performance of each.

                Book Description

Energy deregulation, privatization and competition are a hot international topic. Professionals in this field understand the importance of hedging their financial risk, but are often unclear how to do so. The result is that either they take undue and unwarranted risk or they shy away from futures and derivatives investments that could improve their financial position while preventing substantial losses. Energy Risk Management is the first book to address the important issues of worldwide energy price risk management. Peter C. Fusaro has assembled the leading industry figures to explain general theories and practices for hedging risk, and specific methods to effectively manage risk in markets such as coal, natural gas, electricity, hydropower and others. Topics include: The ABCs of energy financial instruments - How to use hedging tools like futures and options, forwards and spreads; Energy securitization - Ways to securitize oil and gas production, and project finance implications; The future of energy price risk management - Globalization of energy markets, and an integrated approach to managing all risks. Energy professionals and investors worldwide require information to clarify risk management concepts and applications that are new to them. Energy Risk Management steps into that void, providing proven hedging strategies in non-technical language that simplifies this intimidating topic.

5 out of 5 stars The 'bible' of energy risk management.......2005-12-28

Peter Fusaro edits and contributes to what has become one of the standards for those wishing to learn about energy risk management. Certainly there are more complex books on energy risk management written by quants for quants but Fusaro's book is squarely targeted at those wishing to get a broader handle on energy risk management. In that regard, it more than meets its mark.

5 out of 5 stars Energy Risk Simplied.......2001-12-08

This book provides an excellent background and review in easy to understand language about energy trading and energy risk management. I highly recommend it for understanding the basics of this complex subject. It also provides a global overview of market developments. It is not, however, a quantative treatise on energy and financial derivatives. This is a primer that should be viewed as such.Fusaro's second, Energy Derivatives: Trading Emerging Markets, is the companion piece to this book and adds the newer commodities of weather, emissions, bandwidth and coal derivatives. I recommend it as well.

                1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-11-03

This book is definitely not worth its price. Basic option theory and knowledge on VAR is wrongly interpreted. The book gives no insight on what energy risk management realy stands for. Utterly disappointed !

5 out of 5 stars Energy Derivatives: Trading Emerging Markets.......2000-12-08

Until Peter Fusaro's book "Energy Risk Management" hit the bookstores in 1998, anyone needing a clear explanation of how risk is managed in the energy markets had to sift through numerous trade publications and journals.

This was genergally the reaction of any industry participant I spoke to, independently of whether they were clients, students or collegues of mine both from the Energy community or from academia. Therefore, with this feedback, I would strongly encourage my collegues to read Peter Fusaro's new book "Energy Derivatives: Trading Emerging Markets" which he edited with Jeremy Wilcox and was published in October of this year. In this book Peter Fusaro and his team of energy professionals take the reader deeper into the secondary markets (energy derivatives, etc.) which have emerged as a result of the deregulation process of the Energy Industry and, most importantly, the book explains how to use these markets to manage energy risk. Further, in chapter 3, 4, 5 and 6 the reader is introduced to the concept of interdependency among energy markets and other related markets. These include weather and weather derivatives, emission trading and bandwidth - the most recently emerging market converging with Power to become the backbone of the new global economy. This is the first book to address the complex topic of convergence of power and the rapidly growing bandwidth market. For this reason alone this book becomes a must for everyone who is interested in becoming a part of the evolving energy market.

5 out of 5 stars Energy Risk Management is Risk Free.......2000-11-27

Energy Risk Management is great primer for those interested in limiting their risk exposure to volatile International energy markets which are in the process of deregulating. Fusaro and his cast of contributing authors examine a wide variety of energy sectors and give practical examples of risk management techniques in easy to understand terminology.

I was so pleased with the content of this book I even recommended it to a friend who has been trading International financial instruments for the past 12 years and is looking to get into the energy risk management field. When I asked him for his reaction to the book, he said it was "excellent".

For greater detail, I also plan to read the author's follow-up work, "Energy Derivatives: Trading Emerging Markets" which looks at new energy related markets such as weather, emissions and bandwidth trading.

                  Book Description

This book is tightly focused on the pricing and hedging of fixed income securities and their derivatives. It is targeted at those who are interested in trading these instruments in an investment bank, but is also useful for those responsible for monitoring compliance of the traders such as regulators, back office staff, middle and senior lever managers.

To broaden its appeal, this book lowers the barriers to learning by keeping math to a minimum and by illustrating concepts through detailed numerical examples using Excel workbooks/spreadsheets on a CD with the book. On the accompanying CD with the book, three interest rate models are illustrated: Ho and Lee, constant volatility and Black Derman and Toy, along with two evolutionary models, Vasicek and CIR and two credit risk models, Jarrow and Turnbull and Duffie and Singleton. These are implemented via spreadsheets on the CD.

                  * Starts at an introductory level and then develops advanced topics
                  * Provides plenty of numerical examples rather than mathematical equations to aid full understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of all interest rate derivative models
                  * Can be used for self-study - a complete book on the topic, which includes examples with answers

From the supplier: Developing countries need new arrangements and creative strategies to better protect themselves from the volatility of international prices. Experience has shown that such traditional methods as general borrowing, contingent finance, export diversification and commodity price stability have limitations as protective measures against fluctuating exchange rates, interest rates and commodity prices. Among the new risk management instruments now being tried out by developing countries are short-dated instruments, including futures and options; long dated instruments such as currency, interest and commodity swaps; long-dated options; and commodity-linked bonds. The instruments offer flexibility but they also involve certain disadvantages, including high up-front premiums, low credit standing, strict domestic rules, weak incentives and limited expertise.
