Book Description
“I’ve got the name for our publishing operation. We just said we were going to publish a few books on the side at random. Let’s call it Random House.” So recounts Bennett Cerf in this wonderfully amusing memoir of the making of a great publishing house. An incomparable raconteur, possessed of an irrepressible wit and an abiding love of books and authors, Cerf brilliantly evokes the heady days of Random House’s first decades.
Part of the vanguard of young New York publishers who revolutionized the book business in the 1920s and ’30s, Cerf helped usher in publishing’s golden age. Cerf was a true personality, whose other pursuits (columnist, anthologist, author, lecturer, radio host, collector of jokes and anecdotes, perennial judge of the Miss America pageant, and panelist on What’s My Line?) helped shape his reputation as a man of boundless energy and enthusiasm and brought unprecedented attention to his company and to his authors. At once a rare behind-the-scenes account of book publishing and a fascinating portrait of four decades’ worth of legendary authors, from James Joyce and William Faulkner to Ralph Ellison and Eudora Welty, At Random is a feast for bibliophiles and anyone who’s ever wondered what goes on inside a publishing house.

Outstanding Comments of Legendary Publisher/ Author/ Etc.!!.......2006-07-07
From his early days at Columbia, starting out with the Liveright Publishers in the 1920's, and buying into the Modern Library Classics, this is without doubt the best look at publishing I've ever read! The amusing story of how a special copy of Ulysses came across the Atlantic, and into the hands of US Customs is worth the price of the book! Add to that, hilarious yarns, like meeting with Gerturde Stein & her Sidekick Alice, featuring the hilarious promotion of their book so it could "compete" with the hot new book FOREVER AMBOR ,and its even hotter author K. Windor makes for some real fun. Mr. Cerf even wrote a short comment in some of Ms. Stein's books admitting he could not always figure out what they were about. A trip to London to meet Bernard Shaw is also good for some laughs. His comments on many other "Literati", including Saroyan, Faulkner, O' Hara, Ayn Rand,Wittaker Chambers, etc. plus general comments on the state of the world are all top. In short, a must read for anyone of all ages, even if you don't care too much about writing and publishing!
A Debonair Gentleman Game Show Questioner........2006-06-20
When I was a young girl, one of my favorite television shows was 'What's My Line' where the game participants had to guess from various hints what the person was representing. Along with Dorothy Kilgallen, I enjoyed most the witty, debanoir Bennett Cerf. I tried in vain to be on the show as at that time, I had "four mothers" instead of forefathers. But that was off-limits back then. In 1955, his autobiography 'The Life Of the Party' portrayed a humorist along the vein of Mark Twain. He loved to solve puzzles. He was master at humorous anecdotes, always at random: as apparently was his sense of thought.
Here are a couple of examples from one of his "Bumper Crop" books"
The learned but unwordly head of the department devoted to the study of comparative religions at Harvard invariably asked the same question on every final exam: "Who, in chronological order, were the Kings of Israel?" Students came to count on this procedure as a sacred institution and prepared accordingly. Only once did he vary from this practice, asking instead: "Who were the major prophets and who were the minor prophets?" The class members were at a loss and all but one left the question unanswered. This sole survivor scribbled furiously and deposited his paper with the air of a conqueror. "Far be it from me to distinguish between these revered gentlemen, but it occurred to me that you might like to have a chronological list of the Kings of Israel."
Do you know why so many Hawaiian words sound and look alike to the uninitiated? There are only twelve letters in the Hawaiian alphabet. The vowels, (A, E, I, O, and U) and the consonants H, K, L, M, N, P, and W.
He was a clever man and an educated man. It's too bad he never received his well-deserved 'Star" in Hollywood, but he was an Easterner (no doubt), and it probably is reserved for the game show hosts. He could have been one, and a good one at that!
A Delightful Recollection.......2006-05-28
The beauty of this book is that you get to know Bennett Cerf as the scholarly, brillant, and excellent businessman who met the most amazing and well known writers of the 20th century. The gentle questioner on What's My Line was the powerhouse of Random House.
This is the book you keep if you want insights into the personalities of such greats as Sinclair Lewis, F Scott Fitzgerald, William Saroyan, James Joyce, William Faulkner, Dorothy Parker, and a hundred other writers.
This is the book you keep when you want to remember a time when, in business deals, your word was all that was needed and great writing meant having something intelligent to say.
"Random" Recollections From A Publishing Giant.......2004-02-20
Bennett Cerf's legendary career had him founding, leading, then selling one of the world's pre-eminent publishing houses, writing best-selling anthology and humor collections, speaking live and appearing weekly on the "What's My Line?" quiz program. He assembled much of his oral history through transcribed interviews and journals for what would be his autobiography, which he planned to write before dying in 1971.
His family, most notably son Christopher, assembled "At Random" from Cerf's exhaustive life chronicles. His family focused it, according to their introduction, "primarily about publishing and (Cerf's) pre-eminent role in it."
The result is a fascinating story which assembles Cerf's life and career as businessman, newspaperman, TV celebrity and, finally, his role as husband, father, and friend (a lovingly remembered childhood, glimpses of his marriages and family, loving remembrances of friends and co-workers from George Gershwin to Moss Hart.)
Cerf knew and published some of the 20th century's most well-known and beloved authors. "At Random" teems with anecdotes and personal remembrances of James Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, Dorothy Parker, Sinclair Lewis (with some frank critique of his career), William Faulkner, and Ayn Rand. Cerf also crosses paths with legends like New York's Cardinal Spellman (who shares an unusual lunch date with author John O'Hara) Presidents Roosevelt and Truman, and General David Sarnoff who, at the book's conclusion, clashes with Cerf over a fraction in Random House's sale price to RCA.
"At Random" has much to teach about publishing, its machinations and the egos and careers of its stars, the authors. But you come away wanting to know Bennett Cerf better: his political liberalism, hot temper, love of celebrity and of language. He hints at each in his narrative, only leading you to wish other quotes and remembrances could have been included in an addendum to this lovingly compiled book.. (Excerpts from some of his still popular pun collections may have helped.)
"At Random" examines the life and legacy of a celebrity too rare amid an increasingly sordid and more coarse media landscape - an author and businessman who became a TV celebrity first, celebrating the brief period when books were as anticipated and celebrated as films and recorded music are today. It's essential for anyone appreciating 20th century classic literature and history, a love letter to its first star authors and, by proxy, the man who published them.
Cerf's Up!!!.......2003-08-31
When all of us who are now officially Older Than Dirt were growing up back in the 1960's, we usually aspired to be one of three particular men of achievement. For those of us with an athletic bent, Mickey Mantle was the man of choice. For those adventurers and dreamers among us, John Glenn appeared to offer the perfect life. Finally, for us bookish sorts, Bennett Cerf, publisher of Random House, panelist on "What's My Line," author of some of the worst puns ever written, and all around man about town, was who we aspired to be. This book is in essence his memoirs, told in oral history format just a short time before his unexpected death in 1971. He describes in detail why he was able to grow Random House at such a rapid rate: in his day, the book business was a stuffy one, and no publisher worth his salt would dream of lowering himself to seek out new authors. Bennett, being young, foolish, and very intelligent, would travel to wherever these authors lived and impress them with his obvious wit and sincerity. The sheer number and weight of authors whose service he was able to acquire through these means was absolutely staggering: Eugene O'Neill, James Joyce, Robinson Jeffers, Gertrude Stein, and Bill Styron, to name a very few. Through his liberal editing policies, he was even able to publish authors whose ideas he completely disagreed with, such as Ayn Rand. Some, like playwright Moss Hart, became lifelong friends. Although New Yorkers have long thought of their city as the center of the universe, Bennett's long and storied career made many believe it was true. The reader will enjoy his chatty, breezy style time and again, as a reminder that at one time, in the world of books and publishing, one man truly made a difference.

BIG Thanks To The Bike Thief.......2003-08-07
I don't think that these are the best quotes from Muhammad Ali and there was 1 incorrect fact regarding Joe Martin - the police officer who introduced boxing to a young Cassius Clay.
I love that there is a book - this book - that give you the quotes from Muhammad Ali all in 1 place - and it was interesting to read others peoples quotes regarding him.
The book is layed out well - i.e. you read a Muhammad quote about Liston and then a Liston Quote about Ali. It's a small book - around 160 pages and is a great fit for my Muhammad Ali collection...anyones Muhammad Ali collection.
The introduction reminded me how the act of a bicycle thief set in motion the creation of one the Greatest boxers in history - gave Ali a platform to show his Greatness in and out of the ring - the introduction made me even less angry about my own red bike being stolen when I was 12 - the introduction made sit back, scratch my head and say a BIG thanks to the Bike Thief

New Ideas.......2003-05-15
This book is a great jump start to new ideas. Taylor takes you through several projects and offers a lot of insight along the way. I was turned on to this book after seing her present live. The book is filled with character and a joy to read. Every chapter contains great ideas and techniques that you just won't find elsewhere.
Good Buy.......2003-03-20
This is what I like about the Angie Taylor book:
1. It is in color - Rating 1 out of 1. Publishers take note: I just won't buy a book that is b&w with the color pics on the CD.
2. It has a CD (but could look to a DVD with update and more samples etc. See the DVD that ships with the book Studio Secrets - Premiere and After Effects) - Rating 1 of possible 3. Publishers take note - I won't buy a book without a CD and soon without a DVD.
3. Content covers the basics and some of the new features - Rating 2.5 of 5 if you are an experienced user; 4.5 out of 5 if you are a new user
4. She has a great website where she have put out new tutorials to keep up with new features like integrating Cinema4d with AE and lip sync - This saves you money - you don't have to buy a whole new book to take advange of each new AE realease. Rating 3 out of possible 3

Great tutorials and great fun.......2002-11-10
I've worked for a number of years as an Avid editor and have used After Effects for a variety of things, but have usually had a staff Graphics person to handle the heavy lifting. As a result, I found a had numerous holes in my knowledge base. I decided to go back to the basics and I have found Angie's book to be a great tool for filling in the blanks. It serves as a wonderful foundation for the newbie and also does a great job of filling in the gaps for someone like me. The tutorials are clear, concise and very enjoyable. Angie brings a great bit of fun to the process (including some delightful footage of her dancing). Also, Angie draws on other subject matter experts in certain areas, to ensure effective communication of the topic (esp. the chapter covering expressions, which can be a daunting aspect of AE and often goes untouched by most users). Great tutorials, fun projects and thorough explanations. Well worth the purchase price.
It's a must have book!.......2002-10-15
When i first got the AE,i just opened them, felt totally stupid and after 1 minute i closed them and i swore never to open them again ( sounds familiar to you? )...until i bought Angie's book on AE.It's basically an excellent book, you start off with simple things and you even learn the intimidating stuff like scripting, expressions, parenting and 3D with total ease (i never even dare to dream about scripting...).The book is far away from those dull&boring "computer" books with just plain theory and no practice. So if you wanna learn AE,look no further, just go and get this book!

Book Description
Slaphappy is reporter Thomas Hackett's penetrating look at the world of professional wrestling, for those who love the spectacle and for the sport's skeptics and the uninitiated. Through interviews with wrestlers, promoters, and fans, Hackett explores the full range of issues that swirl around wrestling culture -- fame, masculinity, violence, aggression, performance, and play. Among the lessons of professional wrestling is that deceit is a fundamental fact of American life. And yet, paradoxically, the one thing wrestling isn't is dishonest. Although wrestlers play pretend, wrestling itself doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is -- fantastically absurd, a very American kind of madness. Celebrity-obsessed, pathologically narcissistic, murderously competitive, it both epitomizes and parodies the delusional egoism at the heart of the culture.
More than that, wrestling provides its fans and performers a medium for thinking about "getting over" in America today. This spectacle of excess may be the apotheosis of American imbecility, but it is also defiant, hopeful, liberating, and unifying -- a throwback to the raucous pleasures of early theater. Fans aren't detached connoisseurs, looking satirically down on life, concealing their anxieties in the cold comforts of irony. They are total participants in a carnival of their own making, shouting epithets, throwing chairs, expatiating their worries in a crowd's triumphant foolishness.
It is, Slaphappy concludes, all the stuff of human culture. Where does fantasy end and reality begin? Where does the performance stop and life take over? Writing with affection and discernment, Hackett gets deep into the culture, discovering that the make-believe competition of wrestling is indeed "real" for millions of young men -- real in the sense that something real and important is at stake: their worth as men.
Customer Reviews:
Cultural look into pro-wrestling.......2006-12-27
Journalist Thomas Hackett takes a look into professional wrestling from a non-participant point of view in an attempt to explain why pro-wrestling is so popular in American society. His timeskipping gets a bit annoying but overall it's not a bad book. Rather than dealing with storylines in the big feds, Hackett spends some time hanging out with independent wrestlers that are virtual nobodies except in their area, and seldom even then. Unfortunately, he also pretty much sticks to a point that wrestling is low-class and seems to base many of his writings on backyard or 'extreme' wrestlers that are willing to bleed any chance they get. It's an interesting cultural look into the lower ranks of "pro-wrestling". I put it in quotes because these guys rarely get paid anything and are doing it to try and break into the business. There is a lopsided interview with The Rock but other than that, Hackett sticks to these wrestlers and even some rabid fans who later turn on the 'sport'. He also stops by XPW based in Van Nuys, CA. If you don't know what Van Nuys is known for, find out and you'll see it's another attempt by the author to cut on the business. Another unfortunate viewpoint of Hackett's is that he seems to think wrestling is about [...]-eroticism and has little thought that wrestlers are athletes. I grant that a larger part of the wanna-be's of the bar & barn circuit, and even a few big names, aren't athletes but generally it takes something more than being a low-grade actor to put on a convincing story/show in the wrestling business.
Overall, it is an interesting book when he talks with the fans and wanna-be's he travelled with. The Rock and Hart family chapters did little for the book other than to put a few names into it. The author looks down on pro-wrestling and it shows. There are issues wrong within pro-wrestling but this business is part of our society and doesn't appear to be leaving.
Good, but not great.......2006-05-23
If you want an inside look at wrestling and how it operates, this is not the book for you. However, if you want a look at pro wrestling and the intersection between it and pop culture, this book does a decent job. I can see how someone could be attracted to the Indys at a writing subject. They have more hardcore fans, and the press access is a lot easier than with Vince McMahon's WWE.
On the flip side, the fact that he starts off with anti-wrestling bias, the poor timeline and the lit-crit references that would go over the heads of 80% of the population are problematic. He seems so intent on making his language authoritative that you wonder what shortcomings is he trying to make up for. He would have done a better job backing out a lot of the high-falutin' talk and speaking plainly. That said, if you're someone who wants to read about wrestling as critique as a popular culture phenomenon, this book will suffice.
Understanding the larger world of wrestling culture.......2006-04-27
Here's another excellent wrestling history book for any involved in the sport: SLAPHAPPY: PRIDE, PREJUDICE AND PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING provides not just a history of the sport but a lively, involving survey of America's involvement with pro wrestling. There's a healthy dose of anthropology and critical theory which enhances rather than bogging down the report; and there's a reporter's observation edge to the survey which blends a touch of humor into the mix. The recipe is a perfect formula for understanding the larger world of wrestling culture.
Lacking.......2006-04-25
This book had potential, but there were too many flaws to give it a 'Good' rating.
-Thomas Hackett is writing the book as if it is for a glossy mens' mag, like Maxim or Esquire (not surprisingly, he has that background). There is a sense of ironic detachment that is off-putting- he seems to be fascinated, yet repulsed by the culture he is writing about. His preconceived notions of what pro wrestling, and its fans, are really about are evident, and gives the book an "above it all" feel to it.
-His timeline jumps way too much. It's the late 90s, then 2002, then 2000, then 2003, back to the 90s; there is not a clear narrative structure to the book. He writes about ECW in the present tense, which gives the book a dated quality. It's as if this book has sat on a shelf for years, and is only now getting published.
-As a previous reviewer mentioned, he spends much of his time on "extreme" independent wrestlers- an interesting section, but could have added a more balanced look at someone who is in The Show, as well as the growing subset of female (non valet) wrestlers (though there is a candid interview with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson that, though biased, was a good episode in the book). Also, Hackett mentions XPW, yet does not get into any detail on the federal indictments and its ties to pornography.
-Finally, an issue of journalistic integrity arose. Hackett claims in a late chapter that he was recovering from a motorcycle accident at one point in his research, and then in the appendix modifies the claim and says it was a scooter mishap, but it sounded more "macho" to say it was from a chopper-- poor form, and casts other impressions and observations he has made in a dim light.
All that being said, there is an eye-opening profile of Stu Hart's Dungeon in Calgary. Far from being overly obsequious, it gives an unvarnished look at Stu and his family, as well as the numerous problems that afflicted the Hart family (some of them self-induced). I am a big fan of Bret and Owen Hart, but it presented a side that is often not shown-- Vince McMahon (with very good reason) is usually portrayed as the villain, and Stampede Wrestling as the protagonist; the truth lies in between, and can be a shade of grey. 2 STARS
Enjoyable read.......2006-03-14
Although I am not a wrestling fan I found this book really interesting because it says a lot about not only the world of wrestling but our nations culture. The book is well written and thought provoking.

Customer Reviews:
Great for the basics, skip if you are skilled.......2003-09-15
I do not think any of these techniques work just for women, so men, go grab it and read on....
I think for anyone just starting out in sales, whether on the phone or in the field, these techniques will give you the basics to get started. It is also a good idea to go back and read any good sales book as a refresher or a motivator.
Wendy does focus on selling from step one (prospecting, how and where to find your client base) to closing the sale and everything in between. What do I say, how do I say it, what do I do if I fumble... She gives many great real life examples to which we can all relate. Highly recommended for those new in the sales field. But remember for those of us that have been around the block a few times, it's not new information, just a reminder that what we were trained to do years ago still applies.
A waste of time and money.......2003-09-10
I found absolutely no value whatsoever in this book. It's another "take a deep breath and dial the phone" books that lacks any specific advice to work with. A complete disappointment.
She's Got the Process Down Cold!.......2003-02-16
Cold Calling for Women is one of the most helpful books I've ever read. It starts well before the tactics of picking up the phone to include the important strategies of identifying your market, targeting the right prospects, and positioning your product or service for maximum appeal.
That said, it is also extremely specific in terms of tips and techniques for handling each stage of the cold calling process - something I was formerly terrified of. By the time I finished this book, I thought "Hey - I can do this!" Let me tell you - that's saying a lot!
The book is also wonderfully readable and blessedly concise. Wendy Weiss' energetic writing style makes it a fast read, and the exercises she includes motivate you to take action NOW. I read it cover to cover in one sitting - including all the exercises and note-taking - and by the time I was done, I was ready to pick up the phone and get started!
Cold Calling and more.......2002-12-27
Wendy Weiss has done a fabulos job of delivering what was once stale information and making it interesting. Cold calling is one of those daily "chores" for people in business. Ms. Weiss' has clearly detailed helpful "Tips", the best "Do's" and the "Don't" you want to truly avoid. I enjoyed her style and found it an easy read. Its one of those books I keep on my desk for ideas and reference.
Very helpful indeed........2001-08-09
There are several glowing testimonials contained in this book; believe them all. The comparison of cold calling to a performance is as effective an analogy as you'll find. This, and the many techniques recommended therein, are reinforced throughout with exercises that construct a winning strategy for successful cold calling. Even seasoned veterans will find new approaches that work. Do not view the title as a deterrent; anyone who has to cold call (male or female) will find this book quite useful.
