Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A good book about a great American hero.......1999-02-26

I was thrilled to buy this book, as it was John Glenn's flight back in 1962 that first got me interested in spaceflight history - an interest which endures to this day. I also flew all the way from Australia to attend the STS-95 launch, and consider it one of the greatest occasions of my life. This book is very well written, as it should have been with two professionals at the helm, and obviously a lot of background work was done on the text prior to the launch. It reads very well and easily, and the photo choice (although the reproduction of some is quite poor) is excellent. For such a well researched book, however, the authors should have paid a little more attention to what actually occurs in the final ten seconds of a shuttle launch, as they got that wrong and - hey guys! - the teacher who died in the Challenger explosion was Christa McAuliffe, not McCauliffe as you state on several occasions. But they are mild irritations in an otherwise worthwhile, and certainly timely, book.

Nonfiction. Bill Tarrant, who passed away in November, 1998, was the dog's best friend. Bill Tarrant's personal mission was to promote a new paradigm for treating and training dogs: humanely and thoughtfully. Through his powerful gift of writing, Mr. Tarrant educated people that brutality had no place in dog training. In this new book, Mike Gould honors his friend and continues his legacy.

Mr. Tarrant was the author of twelve dog and training books, and was the shooting dog editor for "Field & Stream" magazine for twenty-three years. He was the winner of 27 national writing awards. For his book "The Magic of Dogs," he received a Pulitzer Prize nomination. Other noteworthy books include:

1 out of 5 stars Did I miss something?.......2006-09-23

I just finished this book, and I was disapointed. The subtitle "The Bill Tarrant Story" should be more like "inspired by Bill Tarrant". The book contains very little about Bill, the story of his death, a couple of stories about judging dog trials is all. The rest is a bunch of narrative about Mike Gould's philosophy about dogs and Native Americans. Nice enough I guess, but I expected something more like a biography.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book about a Great Man.......2002-04-18

What a wonderful tribute to a great human being and one of dog's best friends. Whether you've heard of Bill Tarrant or not, if you are a lover of dogs you will enjoy this book. I've read all of Mike's books. This book, like the other's was a joy to read. I really enjoy Mike's style of writing. The book not only provides a sense of who Bill Tarrant was, it provides many inspirational stories and messages. The last chapter is incredible!

5 out of 5 stars Learning from Man's Best Friend.......2002-04-16

This book is an inspiring story about a champion for truth, one of those rare heros who stands for what he believes no matter the cost. It is a powerful story, but also a very important story, told by a master storyteller, a painter of vivid word pictures.
It is not just about "the best friend the dog world will ever know", it's about who we are, what we've become, how our pursuit for power, control and dominance threatens our humanity. To learn all that "from a dog" is quite humbling.
Perhaps there is more to the tale that God created the sky, the moon, and the stars; He made the earth, the water, and the brimstone, but He didn't make the dog, because He already had one. After you read it, find a quiet place to think about it.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good Dictionary, Terrible Binding.......2007-02-17

This dictionary is excellent. I rarely find words which aren't listed, and the definitions including common phrases make finding the correct translation fairly easy. But, as others have stated, the pages started falling out almost immediately. It doesn't seem to be just this dictionary either, as the Russian course I purchased at the same time (Oxford's Take Off In Russian) also has its pages falling out. I hope Oxford does something about this as it really takes away from their otherwise excellent books.

Another reviewer stated the dictionary doesn't have the alphabet, but mine definitely includes one as part of the pronunciation guide in the beginning. Russian pronunciation is much more straightforward than English, so pronunciations aren't listed for Russian words.

5 stars for content, 1 star for binding.

3 out of 5 stars Way too big!.......2005-08-12

I actually didn't use this dictionary. I ordered it along with the Langenscheidt Pocket Dictionary. The "Pocket" Oxford Russian Dictionary was as big as a regular dictionary, so I returned it. The Langenscheidt lives up to the title "pocket" dictionary. I also like the vinyl cover which seems like it will be very durable. Buy it instead!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent value!.......2002-04-22

This pocket Russian dictionary is one of the best that I've used.
It shows all perfective and imperfective verbs, it includes irregular verb endings
and indicates the accent (udarenie) of all Russian words.
I disagree with the poor rating given by a reader that complained about the lack of Cyrillic transliteration.
This dictionary is for people who ALREADY know the Cyrillic alphabet.
A great dictionary at a great price!

1 out of 5 stars It's impossible.......2002-02-25

It's impossible for anyone who does not know the Cyrillic alphabet to cope with this dictionary, as for some reason it does not devote any space to showing the English translation of the Cyrillic letters. Also, the print is fine and pale.

I concede that this is one book I should have looked at before purchasing. As they say, let the buyer beware.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Content But Too Delicate.......2001-06-14

I found the content excellent, however I agree with the other reviewer that it is poorly bound. Mine fell apart after three weeks. On a trip pocket dictionaries like this will be in daily use and take quite a pounding. Regrettably, this book is just not up to it.

Ron does a great job of arming readers with all the right ammunition to counter false doctrines and provides wisdom for how best to lead people to the absolute truth of God. Very well done.

1 out of 5 stars Some Integrity Please.......2005-12-05

My objection to this type of book is does nothing but create divides. For example he lists one religion as a cult that currently is the fourth leading religion in the United States. The pace it is setting it will be a world religion within a 100 years. Not bad for a cult. Just to set the record straight the dictionary defines a cult as a 1.System of religious worship and ritual.2.Devoted attachment to a person or principle3. a sect.

Under that definition every organized religion is a cult. That would include Evangelical Christians as they espouse Bible and Being Saved.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing and rather sloppy scholarship.......2004-03-19

Mr. Rhodes' five "essential" doctrines of Christianity as found on pages 22-23 are wide of the mark. Not all mainstream denominations of Christianity, particularly more liberal ones, would agree with his conclusions. His assertion that the doctrine of the trinity is a "biblical fact" is nothing short of laughable considering the church did not fully develop or embrace the doctrine of trinitarianism for over 3 centuries after Christ's death. And only after intense debate.

With respect to the specific religions he includes in his book, I can only speak to the Unitarian Universalist chapter as that is the religion with which I'm most familiar. Some of Mr. Rhodes' facts are easily refuted and his conclusions are sometimes downright insulting.

For example, "Past Unitarian Universalists include five U.S. presidents..." In fact, there has never been a UU president as the denominations merged in 1961. He names Thomas Jefferson as a Unitarian Universalist. Jefferson was raised an Episcopalian and later in life belonged to no specific religion although his writings do contain Unitarian ideals. There have been four presidents who belonged to Unitarian churches when the Unitarian faith bore little resemblance to UU practice today.

Mr. Rhodes contends that UUs "have little respect for the Christian Bible." That would be his opinion and one which would not hold up to scrutiny. UUs do indeed respect the Bible and other sacred religious texts, they just do not use it the same way Mr. Rhodes does.

Mr. Rhodes states that most UUs deny that there is an afterlife. He sites a document that isn't even accepted as the definitive statement of UU belief by all, or even most, Unitarian Universalists.

Mr. Rhodes contends that UUs are intolerant towards Christians despite their professed belief in religious tolerance. He does not explore the meaning of religious liberalism or differentiate between acknowledging Christianity as a valid faith path while failing to appreciate a conservative Christian proclaiming UUs as evil, sinful, faithless people destined for eternal damnation. Why should anyone tolerate intolerance?

If his other chapters are as misleading as this one, I would recommend anyone interested in cults seek a different source. Clearly Mr. Rhodes' purpose in writing this book was not scholarship, but to elevate his own religion by showing disdain for others. Even if that means shoddy research and erroneous conclusions.

Sierra's MissionForce: CyberStorm is an early turn-based RTS game set in the EarthSiege Universe. The plot is: You are the head of the Battle Department for the UniTech Consortium, a giant, inter-galactic corporation. The Earth's government pays UniTech to protect Earth from the Cybrids, evil techno-aliens like the Borg from 'Star Trek'. Not only do you have to drive them from Human space, but you must set up bases and mines, in order to fund your corporation. In your campaign, you will use HERCs, giant fighting robots piloted by genetically-engineered clones called 'BioDerms'. In the game, you have to repair, update, and protect your base, while keeping your fleet of HERCs and BioDerms ready for the next campaign. I liked the Strategy Guide, not only because it gave out hints and strategies (some of the missions were nearly impossible), but also because it gave out statistics for BioDerms, HERCs, weapons, shields, scanners, Cybrid units, etc. It was a great help on the battlefield-let me optimize my defense. I recommend it-it could be the difference between continuing Earth's legacy of galactic expansion and human genocide at the hands of the Cybrids!

Memos, letters, reports--for a business world supposedly going paperless, we're writing quite a lot these days. Nonetheless, argues business communications professor Edward P. Bailey Jr., reliance on industry terminology and "business-ese" is ruining many of these attempts to exchange information. His practical guide to reversing that unfortunate situation, The Plain English Approach to Business Writing, shows how to "write as you would talk," which he contends is actually easier than penning convoluted sentences filled with obscure jargon. A basic overview of organization and layout (including typefaces, headings, and graphics) is provided along with advice on proper constructions and style.

        Book Description

In offices across America, the Masters of Gobbledygook are hard at work. They're bombarding in-boxes with those long, confusing memos that colleagues don't have the patience to read--and bosses don't have the time to rewrite. They use words like "commence" or "prior to" instead of "begin" or "before." They bury their main point somewhere in the last paragraph--and take two pages to get there. Everybody knows one of them; in fact, you may even be one of them. But now there's help for anyone who's ever fallen prey to businessese, academese, legalese, or any other "ese" when faced with a blank memo pad. In The Plain English Approach to Business Writing, Edward Bailey--who spent twenty years working in the bastions of bureaucratese--offers readers a powerful new communications tool. Written for busy professionals who want to improve the quality and clarity of their own (or their staff's) writing style, this no-nonsense guide is an indispensable office companion. Bailey's approach is 5urprisingly straightforward: just write as you would talk. Plain English is not only easier to read; it's also easier to write. And it's so effective that many large organizations are endorsing, if not demanding, its use in the work place. Pithy and entertaining, Bailey points out all the dos and don'ts of plain English. He then illustrates them with examples drawn from a wide array of sources, including business documents, technical manuals, trade publications like Consumer Reports, and the works of writers such as Russell Baker and John D. MacDonald. From the basics to the fine tuning, he offers practical advice on clarity and precision, organization, layout, and a host of other important writing topics. A delightful, down-to-earth guide, The Plain English Approach to Business Writing is for professionals of all backgrounds (government, military, legal, financial, technical, corporate) and staff at all levels (from the company CEO to the ambitious secretary). The Plain English Approach to Business Writing can be read in an hour--and used for the rest of one's life.

This is the best little book I've read and used on business writing. As a teacher I'm always looking for simple, practical guides that will improve my students' and my own business skills. This book gives useful, practical advice and practices exactly what it preaches. Its even clear enough and well written enough for me to use with my Japanese students. This is the kind of guide that should be available on-line and in various language versions. Highly recommended.
