I have been doing windjammer cruises for over 20 years. The book shows what happens behind the scenes and how windjammers got there start. But it's more a book about a very interesting man.

Book Description
According to Roger Caillois, play is "an occasion of pure waste: waste of time, energy, ingenuity, skill, and often of money." In spite of this--or because of it--play constitutes an essential element of human social and spiritual development.
In this classic study, Caillois defines play as a free and voluntary activity that occurs in a pure space, isolated and protected from the rest of life. Play is uncertain, since the outcome may not be foreseen, and it is governed by rules that provide a level playing field for all participants. In its most basic form, play consists of finding a response to the opponent's action--or to the play situation--that is free within the limits set by the rules.
Caillois qualifies types of games-- according to whether competition, chance, simulation, or vertigo (being physically out of control) is dominant--and ways of playing, ranging from the unrestricted improvisation characteristic of children's play to the disciplined pursuit of solutions to gratuitously difficult puzzles. Caillois also examines the means by which games become part of daily life and ultimately contribute to various cultures their most characteristic customs and institutions.
Presented here in Meyer Barash's superb English translation, Man, Play and Games is a companion volume to Caillois's Man and the Sacred.

Excellent, life changing.......2007-05-22
I bought this book about 5 years ago. It has been one of the most life changing books I have ever read. Like the other reviewer said, you finally see how you contribute to the issues, and it isn't always the other person in the relationship with the problem. This gives you some great tools on how to talk with another person as to not initiate their defense mechanism, and instead on how to discuss issues calmly, and in a respectful way. I will be re-reading this book soon.....it is a great tool.
What? Its me?.......2000-01-23
Its hard to accept responsibility for all my arguments. This book will change the way you fight with a loved one, argue with others in the world and you will never view any communication with another person the same as you did before. A must read. From the beginning of the book you will continuously think its not me, its them, but Dr. Wetzler keeps beating you over the head until you know you have to accept at least some of the responsibility. And once you step over that line, the light bulb comes on. Read it twice: the second time you won't be looking for what the other guy did wrong. This book will change your life. Thank you Dr. Wetzler.

It's almost a dirty rotten shame that this treasure of a book did not get any publicity. Forget Mars and Venus. For practical information, and INTERESTING information, this book is it. I love the clever way they made it two books in one.
Dating essential!.......2001-11-22
I'll be brief, this book is required reading for both men and women on the dating scene! Half of the book is about men - both good and bad and covers a few of my ex-boyfriends - flip the book over and it talks about women - again both the good and the bad. It is written with a maturity of someone who has been exposed to a wide variety of single people. Guess what? - the Prince is not hanging out at the local pub - you are more likely to encounter Frogs!

This book really helped me with my relationships with men because it gave me some real perspective. A lot of what the author has said in the book has been revealed to me by other male friends but it really hit home. If you can get past the typos and grammatical errors, I believe you can glean some insight into a lot of mens psyches. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

I have also read Wilder's other book "Keeping your mate whipped..."
Once again, I found his focus NOT on his intended topic. I am a man, and I found this book gave very little insight into even a fraction of what makes men do the things they do. I also was upset that this book, almost virtually, took the information from Wilder's first book and regurgitated into a form that is supposedly...a new book.
I also say avoid this one. If you aren't a man, and you want to learn how men think, don't get this one.
A Great Guide Book!.......2000-02-27
I just bought this book yesterday and read it today. I found this book very insightful, helpful and easy to read. I read it in half a day but that's because I love to read books. I feel this Wilder's book found me because this information is just what I needed right now. It shed new light on the thoughts of men and how to understand them. He also reference the bible often and part of the proceeds goes to his favorite charity which makes this book very special. I give his book 4 stars because there were a few things I think needed a little more elaboration. Overall it is worth buying and reading. 2/26/00

The available literature on business-to-business marketing is pathetically meager, but Lamon's "Case" is a volume to be read, re-read and referred to until one's copy is worn and frayed like an evangelical's Bible. What little else that's out there is academic sophistry written by professors who've never peddled anything other than a consulting gig or a research project to a business decision-maker. Lamons has been to the books and the battlefields. As a marketing executive, agency owner and American Marketing Association columnist, Lamons knows how to tell the "how to" in a way that inspires deep appreciation of the unique fundamentals of B-to-B marketing and an understanding of how to put those fundamentals to work, right now. After 25 years in the vineyards of B-to-B --- drat! --- It's the book I wished I had written myself.
