ASIN: 0757001289 |
Book Description
Barefoot Pirate is the captivating tale of one man's pursuit of an unshakable dream--a true story of swashbuckling adventures, classic tall ships, and a sailor's steadfast determination to prove himself right. It is the personal account of Captain Mike Burke and the world-famous Windjammer Barefoot Cruise line he built with his barefoot spirit and his iron will to succeed.Brilliantly written with full-color photographs and illustrations, this book offers an insider's view of how Captain Mike managed to save classic sailing ships from sure destruction, and, along the way, put together one of the finest fleets of vessels in the world. Also included are stories of ships once owned by Aristotle Onassis, E.F. Hutton and his wife Marjorie Merriweather Post, and George Vanderbilt III, to mention only a few.
While you may never experience the excitement of boarding a tall ship or feel the sea spray on your face as your ship glides through the ocean, you can come close by sharing the many stories and pictures courtesy of Captain Mike Burke, the Barefoot Pirate.

America on Film: Modernism, Documentary, and a Changing America
Sam B. Girgus Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521810922 |
Book Description
This study examines a selection of films made in the last quarter of the twentieth century in an effort to trace how the notion of "American" has changed drastically from that portrayed in American cinema up to the 1950s. In works such as Mississippi Masala, Lone Star, Malcolm X, Raging Bull, When We Were Kings and Bugsy Sam Girgus finds a new and ethnically varied array of characters that embody American values, ideals and conflicts. He charts these changes through analysis of cinematic tensions between fiction, documentary and modernism.

Man, Play and Games
Roger Caillois Manufacturer: University of Illinois Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 025207033X |
Book Description
According to Roger Caillois, play is "an occasion of pure waste: waste of time, energy, ingenuity, skill, and often of money." In spite of this--or because of it--play constitutes an essential element of human social and spiritual development. In this classic study, Caillois defines play as a free and voluntary activity that occurs in a pure space, isolated and protected from the rest of life. Play is uncertain, since the outcome may not be foreseen, and it is governed by rules that provide a level playing field for all participants. In its most basic form, play consists of finding a response to the opponent's action--or to the play situation--that is free within the limits set by the rules.
Caillois qualifies types of games-- according to whether competition, chance, simulation, or vertigo (being physically out of control) is dominant--and ways of playing, ranging from the unrestricted improvisation characteristic of children's play to the disciplined pursuit of solutions to gratuitously difficult puzzles. Caillois also examines the means by which games become part of daily life and ultimately contribute to various cultures their most characteristic customs and institutions.
Presented here in Meyer Barash's superb English translation, Man, Play and Games is a companion volume to Caillois's Man and the Sacred.

Is It You or Is It Me?: Why Couples Play the Blame Game
Scott Wetzler , and Diane Cole Manufacturer: Harper Perennial ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0060930292 |
Book Description
In this provocative new look at romantic relationships, psychologist Scott Wetzler explores the widespread phenomenon of misplaced anger that seems to define couple dynamics in the 1990s. He finds a wary, secretive, and combative atmosphere clouding relationships. Partners are feeling hurt and bruised by the very people with whom they are most vulnerable. In desperation and puzzlement, they are asking, "Who's at fault here? Is it you or is it me?"What seems to be driving this "inside-out" dynamic, says Dr. Wetzler, is our increasing inability to tolerate the uncomfortable feelings that intimacy arouses--anger, anxiety, frustration, disappointment, or self-doubt. We have become utterly cynical about love and find it easier to hold our partners responsible for our psychological frailties than to own up to and work through the confusing emotions that inevitably accompany falling and being in love.
Written in a strong narrative style with illuminating case examples throughout, here is a book of relationship advice for grownups.

Understanding the Games Men Play!!!: How to Think Like a Man

Groan!.......2000-04-05
Once again, I found his focus NOT on his intended topic. I am a man, and I found this book gave very little insight into even a fraction of what makes men do the things they do. I also was upset that this book, almost virtually, took the information from Wilder's first book and regurgitated into a form that is supposedly...a new book.
I also say avoid this one. If you aren't a man, and you want to learn how men think, don't get this one.
A Great Guide Book!.......2000-02-27
