Driven: The Definitive Biography of Nick Faldo
Dale Concannon
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Hardcover
ASIN: B000HWZ3FS |
Book Description
Nick Faldo, the greatest British golfer of all time, has always held a certain fascination. What makes this complex man tick? What has driven him to his remarkable success? Does a champion golfer have to be a loner? What sacrifices has he had to make to reach the top? All of these intriguing questions are addressed in detail in Driven.
For the majority of his long golf career, Faldo has been branded as one of the coldest men in British sport - at times better known for being distant, arrogant, and wrapped up in himself than for winning three Open Championships and three US Masters. Indeed, the victories seemed only to cultivate the image of him as a socially inept, mechanical player, a 'vivisector of golf courses'.
Faldo's life, both on and off the golf course, often reads like a Hollywood film script. So far, an uneasy relationship with the media has meant that we know very little indeed about Nick Faldo, the man. But those close to him have no shared their thoughts and experiences assisting author Dale Concannon to produce a fascinating insight into a unique sportsman.
Clearly, the quest for perfection has taken its toll. From the exhilarating highs of golf superstardom to the shattering lows of failed marriages and inexplicable losses in form, Driven analyses exactly what motivates this seemingly inscrutable man.
Customer Reviews:
Apprapo Title of Champ's Life.......2003-11-03
Driven does describe one of the best players of the past thirty years. His record speaks for itself.
However, the impression one gets from reading of Faldo's life is shallowness. Golf, golf, golf. Even his fellow players were not allowed near this guy. Three to four wives? Always in a snit about the press, or James, or?
Certainly, he was a good player. Not a Hogan or a Nicklaus or even a Watson. But he had a good run! Yet, nothing enduring about the man outside of his game that will endure him much in the history of the game.
Revealing read.

Written with erudition, insight, and enthusiasm, Runaway Bride is a brilliant mix of film and social history that renews our vision and broadens our understanding of some of the best-loved movies ever made, and the complex, Depression-influenced circumstances from which they were born.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent book on the subject.......2003-01-28
Ever since the Battelle Film Club's showing of Preston Sturges' The Palm Beach Story, I've been on a screwball kick. Screenplays, biographies, non-fiction, what-have-you about that lunatic genre of film greatly interest me. This book by Kendall isn't solely about screwball, but rather an overview of the larger film genre that it falls under, the romantic comedy. Sturges is only the last chapter here. The majority of director coverage goes to Frank Capra and Leo McCarey, and the book goes even more into the lives of the major actresses of the period, Barbara Stanwyck, Katherine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, and Claudette Colbert, who the author asserts were co-creaters of the classic romantic comedy films. The argument goes like this: due to the depression and the unusual success of particular directors (men, and I use the term correctly in this case, who were able to fulfill the cathartic needs of the public going through this rough period), these directors were given extremely free reign. They used it to explore collaborations with their favorite subjects, these independent women. Movies before and after delegated women more to the supporting roles (with notable exceptions, but only as exceptions), but in these romantic comedies of the 30s the women were the lead and often the most sympathetic and fleshed-out characters.
While the descriptions of the making of the movies was quite interesting, it is the concise biographies of the people involved--directors, actors, actresses, and writers--that help you understand this moment in cinema history. An excellent book on its subject.
Great study on one of the greatest periods for movies.......2002-05-09
Along with Marjorie Rosen's "Popcorn Venus" and Brendan French's "On the Verge of Revolt," this is one of three superb feminist film books published in the '70s and '80s. Witty, engaging, and intelligent without lapsing into jargon-studded academic verbiage or theoretical pretention.
very engaging.......2002-04-26
This is an extremely well-thought out book that should be just as interesting to a film scholar as to the casual reader. Kendall's exploration of the feminist potential in thirties romantic comedy is very assured. Biographical criticism is coming back with a vengeance (in Literary circles anyway) and the author's focus on the relationship between the directors and their female stars makes this book an ideal companion to the more textually-oriented Stanley Cavell's "Pursuits of Happiness". She chooses great movies to discuss. I particularly like her focus on the Capra-Stanwyck relationship--and I envy her for having seen "Forbidden" & "Ladies of Leisure", which I can't find anywhere!
great.......2000-03-27
I found out about this book when researching Clara Bow. It really is terrific. I suggest you read it right away!

Customer Reviews:
Inspirational.......2007-08-22
It makes me want to go out and create a parody of one of these magazines. And these things were so over the top sometimes that this wouldn't be very hard...
An excellent treatment of this genre.
Beautifully Manly .......2005-09-21
Wow what a great book. The artwork of these old pulps is exquisite. I loved paging through this volume and soaking in all the great images. I do wish they had included more excerpts from the text portion of the pulps, but the outrageous cover art was entertaining in itself. I highly recommend this book.
Glorious Despite Editorial Bent.......2005-05-11
Well-printed, hardbound, handsome collection of eye-popping cover art and illustrations from men's adventure mags of the 50s through the early 70s. Every kind of trashy, sleazy, paranoid Whitebread-American fantasy is presented here. Hunky guys in torn shirts being attacked by everything the editors could think of: giant ants, rabid weasels, Nazis, Japs, native savages, Leopard Women of the Congo, Commie dominatrixes, you name it. Then there are semi-nude damsels popping out of their tops while being threatened by a similar list of aggressors. Possibly the best one in terms of ridiculousness shows a chuckling Fidel Castro about to burn a tied-up blonde with his cigar. These pictures are so outrageous they go beyond offensive into a strange realm of ironic hilariousness. The only thing more amazing than the subject matter is the fine execution of these paintings. Every page took my breath away as I marveled at the masterful compositions, the deft use of color and lighting, the absolute mastery of anatomy and proportion. I doubt there are any illustrators working today who would be capable of producing work of this calibre, regardless of subject matter.
My one complaint is that the editor, Adam Parfrey, in his introductions to each section, seems to be defending these covers as a sociological document to be examined from a contemporary Politically-Correct feminist cosmopolitan perspective. (One reviewer here called it "Looney-Left commentary," and I feel that needs clarification.) Sorry Mr. Parfrey, but there is no defense for this material. It is what it is, it's horribly Bad and Offensive and Wrong, but it's _SO_ bad it can't be taken seriously. It's so bad it has become good and can only be enjoyed in the way one enjoys B-movies - by laughing at them, because Now We Know Better.
Most of the introductory material in the front of the book was interesting and informative: a few interviews and reminescences of what it was like to work on the magazines in their heyday. But Parfrey's article was mostly the kind of art critic / social critic mumbo-jumbo which hides a lack of ideas behind a fog of contemporary academic jargon. As I read it, I suspected I was actually reading nothing ... and in the final paragraph, when he used "traction" as a verb, my suspicions were confirmed. Mr. Parfrey has nothing of value to say, but he did put together a really great collection of jaw-dropping cover art, and I thank him for that. This book is worth getting.
Defines "over the top".......2004-07-07
These magazines were considered the absolute bottom of the barrel when they were published. To be truthful, they're still offensive today. But now they can be examined in terms of sociology and popular culture. If you don't pass judgemnt on their content, you can marvel at the sheer audacity of these publishers! Nothing was too outrageous to be published in these mags - they define the term "raw." Included is the magazine from which Frank Zappa cribbed his famous "weasels ripped my flesh" line.
This book has extemely high production values and fascinating commentary, whether you agree with it or not. Wholesome entertainment? No. Fascinating? Yes!
great covers.......2003-11-24
The covers were great...what was not needed is the looney left commentary.

examples.......2005-10-10
This book does cover all the important topics clearly. Unfortunately, the examples used in the book are 'corny' and distract from the important concepts leading to unneeded text and dreadful thoughts of 'The clip joint' and 'the solar powered cookie oven'. The grammar used in this book is a bit strange; don't, won't, etc appear frequently. This is somewhat odd as bernake was a former Fed governor and abel is also distinguised. I think that, perhaps, the authors attempted to 'dumb down' the book and in the process managed to merely make it corny. I also am a bit appalled at the amount of space given to math - it seems the authors wanted it to be more 'accessible'.
I will agree that the 'real world' examples are both pertinent and informative. They were chosen very well. The footnotes are also welcome as the authors frequently simplify models.
This book could use some trimming and perhaps less talk about dog groomers and the like. If that were to happen this would be one of the best macro books out there.
Anyone want to bet on Dr B becoming Fed Chair? Actually he had no input due to his Fed Governor position.
Excellent textbook.......2005-09-21
This is an excellent textbook as a forerunner to more difficult books such as Branson. It deals with each of the major issues clearly and competently. The text boxes are excellent case studies.
the best.......2004-11-30
the best economics book i've had so far. IT's easy to understand but filled with TONS of great information. IT all makes sense with the historical examples and also has insight on the future. A must read!

Great textbook.......2006-04-02
I am an engineer/scientist and I used this book for my first course in World Economy/Macro. Although the course used Mankiw Macroeconomics 5th Ed as the textbook (which is a good intermediate-level book), this book provided a great introductory foundation for the various concepts.
The color illustrations/tables in this book are by far the best that I have seen (for example the book uses real units on x and y axes and actual data wherever possible in figures which makes them less abstract than the figures found in other books). Economics by Hall is also a reasonably good book but not as versatile as this one.
Plain bad.......2005-11-02
The concepts might be spot-on, but the presentation is not. The book adopts the narrative, rambling styles so common in college textbooks these days. It doesn't define its terms well or link its terms with its graphs.
Manages to make introductory Macroeconomics more difficult than it should be.
ON THE SEARCH FOR BETTER TEXTBOOKS!
If someone knows a decent one, put it up in a review for others to see.

A good book.......2007-06-29
I just bought the Latin American version of this book , and it was good . The main issue here is the lack of certain formulas and graphing techniques required to do some of the exercises in my MBA class...
Clear and Concise.......2006-03-05
I think Parkin's explanations are clear and concise. There were no blah-blah-blah's about weird econ stuff that a beginner would get confused about. The pictures really helped you understand the concept too. Finally (and this might just be me), I thought the segments about famous economists and current-affairs articles relating to econ were fun to read.
Best buy!!!!.......2005-08-22
This book is the best introductory economics textbook that I have ever read. There are other good books and in different languages, however this is the most comprehensive summary of most of the topics that a Bachelor in economics will cover. It is especially useful and accessible to everyone since it helps you develop the necessary intuition for more advanced and profound courses. Basically, nothing more that basic math is required to read this book, and no statistics, much less econometrics or anything advanced. For advanced students, it is still helpful since it can be used as a reference for concepts. It is conveniently divided into two parts, macroeconomics and microeconomics. The macro part for example starts by outlining the very basis of the macro models, and from then it proceeds to add different variables that make the model more complex. Its explanations are very tractable and are accompanied by numerical examples in tables that help you develop notions such as what a marginal increment is and so on. All that, without the necessity of derivatives. I would undoubtedly buy this book if I were to start studying economics even in countries where economics is not a major but an entire undergraduate program with many econ classes.
