Reductionism and fanaticism at it's worst! The demons of Tae Kwon Do?.......2007-05-01
If you do a bit of research on Ms. Gatlin, you will find someone who has never really been mentally stable, and this book does not help establish a case for her stability. For example she says "Ki-if you take martial arts, you're going to hear this term, a lot." Maybe in her small experience out of all martial arts experiences in the world, this was true, however, in many cases it is not.
Ms. Gatlin uses typical fundamentalist Christiant tactics of exaggeration and at times, outright lies in order to scare people away from martial arts. In the same way that the "good" Pagan horned God became the image for the Christian "devil" in order to scare people away from Paganism, Ms. Gatlin paints a picture of occultism and devil worship, often paralleling martial arts experiences with illegal drug experiences.
I think a person has to take her statements into consideration with her lifetyle. When you have six abortions, participate in countless flings with men and women, do drugs, and get a power rush out of violence, there's no telling what you're going to get out of martial arts or any other activity for that matter. It's no wonder her children grew up to be "Blood" gang members. I don't think it had much to do with martial arts, but with having a mentally unstable mother.
If anything, it appears to me that her unstable mind determined to a great extent the experience she would have. If it wouldn't have been martial arts, it would have been something else.
This person appears to be unable to cope with the gravity of the mistakes she made in her life and needs a scapegoat. Why not blame Tae Kwon Do, Kenpo and all other traditional martial arts and the "demons" associated with them? I notice that she brings up every unpleasant aspect of martial arts history, but fails to mention anything about the Catholic church (which is undeniably at the root of contemporary Christianity historically) being responsible for more deaths than all the world wars combined through crusades, inquisitions and witch hunts.
If you're doing a study on religious fantacism, psychology or other relevant area, this might make a mediocre topic for you. If not, steer clear of this book. It is neither factual, realistic nor objective. The author has a two fold agenda of excusing herself from her mistakes and weaseling her way into publishing with an outrageous topic that no one else has covered.
Ignore the many Christians out there whose lives are enhanced by proper martial arts practice. Ignore the many children who are able to solve conflict without violence through proper instruction. Ignore the respect, discipline and Biblical values associated with proper martial arts practice. That's what she asked you to do.
Tunnel vision.......2007-02-26
Saying that martial arts is the downfall of every karateka's life is like saying that rock music is the root of all evil. Both "can" lead people in the wrong direction, but both can also lead people in the right direction. What matters is the lyrics. There are both bad and good lyrics in martial arts. Read "Martial Arts: the Christian Way" or "Christian Martial Arts 101" by Wendy Williamson. These books explain how you can change the lyrics of traditional martial arts to teach and train in the concepts of the Bible. Martial arts may have come from something less than Christian, but so did rock music, and so did Christmas. Jesus Christ is the Master of Christ-centered martial artists. Students learn how to put on the full Armor of God and reap the Fruit of the Spirit in their lives. Christ-centered martial arts instructors teach that the Bible is one's most powerful weapon (the Sword of the Spirit) and students should NEVER to come to class without their Bibles in hand. They teach students the importance of gentleness and self-control. They teach students how to defend themselves and others spiritually, as well as physically. It sounds to me like Tonie heard some bad lyrics in martial arts. I certainly understand and sympathize with her, and I believe that for her and in her life martial arts was a downfall. If anything, this book helps people understand how important it is to look at the spiritual aspects of a martial arts school before getting involved. To me its the difference between listening to "def leppard" or "jars of clay"... it the lyrics, not the music. Keyword "Christian martial arts network" on google and see the difference.
First hand experience of Satanic influence.......2005-11-23
I just read Tonie's book and my experience is with someone who is a karate champion who believes he is The David from the Bible who with his "pastor leader" will bring in the last ministry. His "pastor" is also a karate black belt and tithes are made directly out to HIM. They did some sort of "breathing" they called an "anointing" which was an inhale with an exaggerated exhale. I had a physical reaction to this within a week - heart pressure which doubled me over, a feeling of losing control, then laughter. I was told this was The Holy Ghost and our "Sprirts were connecting". When the leader started "coming on to me" I asked questions and this feeling went away and they became more and more controlling. Said I was to Marry this "David" and buy a home near the leader with the sale of my home. Well, I got out after I found his x-wife had their marriage annulled for believing it was a religious cult. He was insistant I get involved with karate and did a "move" on me one night that would have broke my neck if he'd made "contact". It was a punch and a kick move. He said God wanted me to know he could protect me! It was a terrifying nightmare and I've woke up. Make your own decision. He spoke in tongues and cast demons using Sa Ta Na Ma which is a yogic chant. Told me if I went up against them I'd be smited by God. Wanted me to wear more and more makeup and tighter clothes. There is belief he and this pastor are having a sexual relationship. He says he will be the last ministry and dissappear before the rapture. A five time olympian karate champion?
A Sad Life, but............2005-08-18
This book is short and to the point. "Martial arts made me do it".
The life story of Tonie Gatlin is a sad one filled with abuse and self-loathing. However, Tonie Gatlin's continuous blaming of martial arts for her pain has little or no value to her path of healing, and in fact is a stumbling block to continued growth. This is a book filled mumbo-jumbo about "Satan" being responsible. Until one can take complete responsibility for ones action, one is destined to repeat them.
The fundimentalist philosophy espoused by this book is exactly the reason that so many people have become disenchanted with the Christian Church. The idea that all other beliefs are evil and satanic just does not resonate with a majority of people. It is this very belief that "my religion" is the only true one that has brought the world to a place where men will fly planes into buildings in order to kill complete strangers or shoot a doctor at an abortion clinic...these people after all are not of the "true" faith and therefore they are less than human. Fundimentalist beliefs are all the same...they all claim to "Know" the true way.
Gatlin's real issues come from a sad abusive home life as a child. Her inability to deal with her justifiable rage is the real "demon" in her story, not martial arts, or lesbianism, or feminism. It is simply that she was a sad child with little or not support and was not taught early on to make healthy choices.
Linda Nathan has done a pretty good job of researching martial arts and it's history, however, it is her conclusions that are questionable. Her understanding of "eastern religions" (guess what folks, Christianity is an Eastern religion, although badly interpreted by western minds) is superficial at best. She goes into great detail explaining how the dragon and the serpent are important to eastern religions (they represent wisdom) and that they are really cleverly hidden symbols for Satan.
Linda Nathan rights with the typical arrogance of Christian Fundimentalist: Their way is the only way.
I'm glad that Tonie Gatlin has found peace in her life, but saddened that she felt a need to endorse a book filled with so much religious intolerance.
A Different Path..........2005-04-16
I first read about Tonie Harris years ago in Valerie Eads volume, "Women in the Martial Arts: A New Spirit Rising" (1983). I was impressed by Tonie's story of survival despite desparate circumstances, her willingness to improve herself through martial arts. Tonie Harris was a mixed martial artist before most people knew what the term meant, going out of her way to study a number of other arts, including wrestling.
So when I saw this newer volume, curiosity led me to read and consider this book. Most of the portions in "The Dark Side of Karate" concerning Tonie Harris-Gaitlin's martial arts days are lifted from her dialogue in "Women in the Martial Arts". There was some new biographical information, including her suffering at the hands of a sexually abusive grandfather as a girl. Tonie also describes her involvement in a lesbian relationships while being involved with a women's martial arts organization, and the control issues related to it. She discusses her agression, attitudes towards family members, etc.
Then, Tonie attempts to tie together all of her failings by linking them to...the martial arts. Violence and aggression? Martial arts made me do it. Lesbianism? Martial arts made me do it. Disrespect and neglect for family, bad relationship choices, abusive behavior? Yes, you guessed it--The "demon" martial arts are to blame. The martial arts serve as the catch-all scape goat. Tonie is never able to come straight out and take responsibility for her bad life choices. Instead, she uses her embrace of Christianity--and subsequent rejection of ALL martial arts practice--as an outlet which conveniently lets her off the hook.
There are too many smart and stable Christians --and non-Christians-- practicing martial arts today who can recognize the mistake Tonie Harris has made in rejecting something good because she has chosen to cast the reflection of her own bad experiences upon it. Reading the book, it's clear to me that the "demons" in Tonie's life were brought about through her own actions, had little to do with martial arts themselves, and more to do with the mind of the practitioner herself and how Tonie decided to react to them at the time. In hindsight, it seems it was easier for Tonie to craft a world of scary demon-dragons that forced her to commit unethical or distasteful deeds to explain her past actions, while it would be simpler to just admit her past flaws and move on. That Tonie has come to abhore aggression and violence in any form may better explain her evolved views of the martial arts as something she doesn't need and won't teach. To call her rejection of martial arts Christian is another thing altogether.
Today's Tonie Harris-Gatlin sounds like a woman dedicated to her community, firm in her faith, and happy with her life. This is terrific! But playing the blame game with karate and other martial arts, which have for years given people a healthy outlet for agression, a mode to physical fitness, and mental discipline sells these practices short. Most modern teachers do not force students to practice religious aspects. Tonie's view of martial arts as demonic, evil, un-Christian is one which has been debated in the fundamentalist Christian community for years, and will probably not disappear any time soon. True believers who already hold Harris-Gatlin's view of all martial arts as irreconcileably evil may enjoy this short book. Honest people, Christian or not, martial artist or not, will have no problem seeing through the veil Tonie has put up in the confines of this little volume.

Book Description
Though burlesque has survived in the back of our cultural consciousness after being pushed aside by modern stripping in the '50s, the revival that began in the early '90s has finally brought burlesque back to the forefront of popular culture.
Evolving from an underground movement to a nearly mainstream fetish, neo-burlesque embraces a wide variety of modern interpretations all based on the classic bump and grind and "taking it off" with a wink and a smile. From classic tributes to punk rock revisionists, women of all ages, sizes, and backgrounds are rediscovering burlesque and reinventing it. A sense of heightened imagination, empowerment and energy are being delivered to the stage, perhaps even more so than during the historic heyday, the Golden Age of Burlesque.
Slipping behind the scene, Burlesque and the New Bump-n-Grind undresses the issues of feminism, modern popularity, and what exactly draws the unique and varied audience members to the shows. The women-and men!-of burlesque also receive their fleshed-out dues by a categorized peek into the various troupe styles including classical, re-creationists, revivalists, modern, circus, performance art, political, queer, bawdy singers and comics.
Peppered throughout the book are full-color and black-and-white photographs that fully instill the picturesque dance into the reader's mind.
Founder of one of the first neo-burlesque troupes, author Michelle Baldwin (a.k.a, Vivienne Va-Voom) has helped to bring the lost art of burlesque back to the forefront of pop culture. Baldwin has served as the creative director, choreographer, music director, costumer, financial head, and performer for her troupe, "Burlesque As It Was." Her deep immersion into this art form has provided her with a rare view into the growth and evolution of the revival.

New Burlesque Represents!.......2006-06-07
I may be biased, since I appear in this book, but if I weren't proud to be a part of it I wouldn't recommend it!
Michelle does a wonderful job of describing the energy and glamour of the New Burlesque scene, with tons of color photographs to emphasize the passion this rediscovered art inspires. While striptease, even retro striptease, is nothing new, the current New Burlesque scene brings it into a fresh environment where the performances take on a new meaning and a new sense of pure joy. Whether you're a fan of girls who make you wriggle or girls who make you giggle, you'll love the performances of the ladies in this book--and the gentlemen, too!
Absolutely Delicious.......2004-09-14
Not only does this book serve as delicious eye candy, but the author does an amazing job interlacing facts with true experiences capturing the crazed phenomenon of burlesque revival. I really admire the energy that comes across in Baldwin's writing it makes me want to go out and try it! I would recommend this to all of you feminists out there who also like showing a little leg.
a worthy topic, but not the comprehensive guide it could be.......2004-09-03
As a costuming student, amateur burlesque researcher, and preformer, I was excited to see someone devote a book exclusively to new burlesque. The book has some cute pictures and a few quotes from some of the rising stars of the scene, but unfortunately, the overall content is shallow and the structure is jumbled. The format of the text is too jumpy to really provide a reader with a timeline and often repeats itself. Some rigorous cutting-and-pasting would have helped immesely on that front, but the more suble deficiency is the lack of academic analysis or critical commentary. It reads like a high school book report, merely stating facts and names, but not tying them together. Almost anyone could have researched and written this book by simply looking at a few burlesque troupes' websites. In fact, I wonder if that is what happened.
Until a more thorough text is published, get your history lessons from reviews in journals and magazines; the recent media blitz has got you covered. As for images, almost all the new burlesques soloists and troupes have lovely websites with gorgeous studio portraits and fun live snapshots.

Burlesque
Sexy, hot and very feminine!
This book could have been written by a history professor but it has a certain panache that can only say Michelle Baldwin has felt what burlesque was and IS!

The greatest showwomen of the 20s - the 70s - knew how to use it and really get people interested and excited.

Neo-Burlesque - all that is Sexy, Women and FUN!

shocking, tantalizing and conquering ...........2004-07-02
Reviewed by: John A. Mangarella for Small Spiral Notebook
When author Michelle Baldwin found her way into Denver's Mercury Café to see her first burlesque show, a career was not only born but the first lines of this delightful study of burlesque took shape. The is not just a book, it's the best type of book, a time machine back to the last century when English actress Lydia Thompson toured the U.S.A., shocking, tantalizing and conquering the American stage.
Baldwin's meticulous research, her obvious affection for burlesque, both legendary and contemporary, compels every page of this book to dance before the reader's eyes with a history of women who were not only ahead of their time but stole the heart of America at every whistle-stop. From the crowds that mobbed the Chicago World's Fair ogling the notorious Little Egypt through the advent of Mae West as she descends on Broadway with her first show, provocatively entitled "SEX". This book packs a lot of fast facts that peel away with the ease of silk clothing dropping to the stage floor.
She presents the burlesque of comedy and song, of variety acts and supple curves. From the hootchy kootchy dancers of the 1890's through Sam Scribner's Columbia Wheel, the sexually censored main circuit of burlesque houses that competed with the wild ride of the Minsky Brothers who founded stock burlesque troops and rented inexpensive theaters in poor neighborhoods that boasted cheap tickets and expensive sizzle. Eventually, Minsky's rise caused the powerful but restrictive Scribner to stop censoring his shows by allowing nudity and blue humor.
Ms. Baldwin's anecdotal choices are fascinating. Who invented the modern striptease? Was it Mae Dix in 1917 who accidentally removed her collars and cuffs to ignite the audience into pure wildness? Or was it Hinda Wassau who was pushed onto the stage half dressed by a stage manager? Or was it... read it for yourself-where the clothing falls is tantalizing. You can almost hear the brassy music rising from the orchestra pit as mentions of Gypsy Rose Lee, Sally Rand, Ann Corio and Georgia Sothern form their own girl shows and take them on the road. Even though they danced in Middle America, in small theaters and carnivals, they filled every seat and brought cosmopolitan glamour to venues that were way, way, way, way off Broadway. The author covers burlesque's high popularity as well as its low periods when threatened by repressive times as well as a new breed of strippers that are somewhat hardcore. Even though burlesque overcame censorship its toughest battle was with an era that was much more permissive. This is where Ms. Baldwin's book separates as provocatively as Sally Rand's fans. A major portion of "Burlesque" is devoted to "The New Bump-N-Grind" and all those suggestively creative performers that have successfully picked up the mantle of Gypsy Rose Lee, Ann Corio and other legends to show us what IS burlesque today.
Ms. Baldwin relates the resurgence of burlesque with even more passion because she's living it, thus endowing the second part of the book with a "You Are There" style that really does allow the reader to tour with all the contemporary performers. Jennie Lee, known as "The Bazoom Girl" in her heyday began assembling her massive collection of burlesque memorabilia on a goat farm in the California desert. Following Miss Lee's death, Dixie Evans, a fellow dancer who is a stunning Marilyn Monroe look-alike, began transforming the memorabilia into a museum. Dixie Evans also started the Miss Exotic World Competition which has drawn larger crowds each successive year. She also wrote the forward to this book.
"Burlesque And The New Bump-N-Grind" stems from the past and blossoms in the present and future. Ms. Baldwin's chore at describing the world of burlesque as it is today encompasses hundreds of entertainers and dozens of festivals and shows. Make no mistake about it, as this amply photographed book demonstrates, today's burlesque is every bit as sexy, funny, risque, respectable, wicked and addictive as the movements of Gypsy Rose Lee or Ann Corio or any of the great acts from decades gone by. The sumptuous photographs indicate that these new women of burlesque have taken some of their inspiration from the past. There are exquisite costumes reminiscent of the Ziegfield Follies, something to remind us of Weimar Berlin and Marlene Dietrich's The Blue Angel. There are costumes from the Silent Era and later Hollywood as well as some from the Old West. Ms. Baldwin covers all the ground, touching off on some of the men performing baggy pants comedy as well the bands that put some blood pressure into the music as the women bump-n-grind.
In quoting a paragraph from the book about contemporary burlesque's allure: "Modern glamour is the sleek, sexy aesthetic of technology. Everything from the ultrathin models featured on magazine covers to the tiniest cell phone to the most unobtrusive stereo speaker sets the pace of modern life. Burlesque glamour, on the other hand, is larger than life, filled with innuendo, and coated with glitter. Burlesque offers something different than the standard mass-produced culture. In burlesque, girls can have curves, often big curves. They can be loud and funny and still be sex symbols. The basic elements of burlesque are things that are missing from contemporary life."
"Burlesque And The New Bump-N-Grind" teases and pleases. On a historic level, Michelle Baldwin's book should be a welcome addition to any writer's research library because of the many different areas of burlesque she covers. As for just pure fun, a bit of skin that reveals a heart much more naked, "Burlesque And The New Bump-N-Grind" is a very pleasurable read. Buy the book, and then check out the listing of websites advertising shows all across the country. Then buy yourself a ticket and go have some fun.

Dissapointing.......2003-02-18
I bought the guide for Squaresoft's Kindom Hearts. I found it very useful, so I thought this guide would help me with Tony Hawk's 3. But now I think it was a waste of money, in each page there is very little information, the photographies are so small it's impossible to see anything, the maps of the levels are very low detailed.
I have a 7 pages guide that appeared in an Spanish magazine which was better than this whole one.
I recommend you better to use the money in Tony Hawk's 4.

Good For Anyone Getting Into This Business.......2007-04-15
If you're just starting out selling promotional products, this book will help take off about 3 months of learning the hard way.
A Major Disappointment........2006-05-26
First, at $20, this slim 100 page book is at least $10 OVERPRICED.
Based on all the great reviews, I couldn't wait for this book to arrive. WOW! What a letdown. The concept of the book is great, but there's little information in here that's of great insight...VERY little meat. The information that is here is presented well, and there are a few good ideas. But perhaps there's not enough info. on this topic to warrant a book.
For the most part, the book is full of common sense and generalities. The following aren't exact quotes, but close enough: "Make sure people that you hire know what they're doing" & "when people come up and talk to you, make them feel special."
The authors state that there are 100's of thousands of promotional products & that they can't possibly cover every one. Sadly, not even the major categories were covered adequately.
They state throughout the book that you need the help of a "trained promotional products advisor" to steer you on the right path & make sure you don't screw up. Well, that's what I thought I was buying this book for...to help me do a good job & not get it wrong! Whatever knowledge it is that these "advisors" have, I expected most of it to be in this book. Especially when they've got a $20 price on it.
Save your money for something else.
I'll pass this on to my clients!.......2006-04-10
Super Book that is complete and fulfilling to pass on to my clients (if anything, my larger clients). This will help my clients understand really what all I do for them to do such complete and accurate work for them.
It was very helpful but I have missed some informations.......2004-04-26
It's a very helpful book when you want to sell promotional products. But I have missed some Informations. For example I could not find any Informations about Promotional Products Marketplaces. (like www.crobike.de or www.charityvillage.com) Nevertheless it's one of the best books about promotional products
A One of a Kind Book!.......2004-02-08
There's nothing on the market like this book. As a Promotional Products Advisor for over eleven years, I have always wished for a way to teach my clients about the power of promotional products. My wish has been granted. The book is quick and easy to read yet authoritative and practical. It's a must read for every Promotional Products Advisor, but, more importantly, must be read by every business owner and corporate executive to learn how to take full advantage of the marketing value of promotional products. Don't buy one copy of this book...buy ten and get them into the hands of marketing decision makers as soon as possible.

Description:
Green power products may be seen as a means of fostering renewable energy sources because they create and channel consumer demand for environmentally sound power generation. They can therefore be evaluated on a par with other support instruments regarding their effectiveness to connect new capacity to the grid. Apart from this direct effect however, green power products confer a much more active role for customers and utilities. Thus, learning processes, which foster eco-oriented decisions beyond the construction of new renewable generation capacity, may be induced. In the present paper, we provide an encompassing review of the ecological consequences of green electricity products. We examine the direct eco-effects by comparing five European countries in their endeavor to increase electricity generation from renewable energy. The results show that the impact of green power on increasing renewable generation capacity is rather limited. In a second step, we analyze the contribution of green power in stimulating eco-oriented learning. It turns out that green power has particular potential in facilitating simultaneous learning processes involving power producers, traders, suppliers and consumers. We conclude that green electricity can be a crucial complement to governmental energy policies in the mid term. A precondition for reaping this potential is the careful policy design to create synergies in the interaction of regulatory support schemes and the green power market.
