Book Description
Now available in a handsomely produced oversized paperback—with expanded information and 24 pages of black-and-white photographs—The Biographical Encyclopedia of the Negro Baseball Leagues documents more than four thousand players on Negro League teams from 1872 through 1950. Called "one of the best reference books of the year" by Library Journal and named an outstanding academic book of the year by the American Library Association, this is the first book to cover comprehensively the careers of all African Americans who played with a team of major-league quality or whose careers are featured in the history of America’s Pastime. It delivers a wealth of information, from vital statistics and the standard baseball figures of batting averages and pitching records to career data, including years of active play, positions played, team affiliations, and even nicknames. To create this one-of-a-kind reference, baseball authority James A. Riley traveled the country to interview the surviving members of the Negro Leagues about their exploits and the careers of their now-deceased teammates. With this invaluable firsthand information, Riley brings to life the careers of such greats as Satchel Paige, Ray Dandridge, Josh Gibson, and Leon Day. Looking past Jackie Robinson’s breaking of the color barrier in 1947, he profiles all Major League Hall of Fame players who also played in the Negro Leagues such as Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Ernie Banks, and Roy Campanella. “A landmark publication in the fields of baseball history and African-American history … a one-of-a-kind work.”—Booklist

An Essential Addition To The Bibliography Of The Negro Leagues.......2007-01-09
Exactly What It's title advertises - an alphabetical listings of players and personalities associated with the Negro Leagues of Baseball. Ranks with "Only the Ball Was White" and The works of John B.Holway as essntial to a study of the subject. Definitely recommended.
Celebrate The Legacy.......2006-12-19
Editor James A. Riley is a renowned expert on the rich history of Negro League Baseball. His crowning achievement is honoring more than 4,000 players and those involved in management between the years of 1872-1950 in this comprehensive biographical encyclopedia.
Included are biographies and statistics on each individual and team, a bibliography that lists the materials used in the research, along with a register of the interviews that Riley conducted.
The Negro Leagues had a major economic and social impact in the black community, featured some of the greatest players & teams that the sport has ever had and was an integrated business on the diamond, inside the front offices and in the stands.
I have always compared the play in the Negro Leagues v. the white MLB to that of the AFL v. NFL and ABA v. NBA; that it was on par or superior to the other major league. The encyclopedia is a celebration of the legacy left by those who not only challenged the institutionalized racial hatred of the times, but triumphed in ways that we can learn from and must never forget.
If You Love Baseball..........2001-08-08
...I question that love if you do not have this book. This is the most concise collection of biographies, stats, and information about every human involved with the development, management, and participation in every Negro League that ever existed. Even players whose first name was not known is listed with at least a few words about when they played and for whom. And the players with extensive history is detailed along with stats and other great side stories about them. There is even information on the teams in the Negro Leagues, which I found most interesting. I don't know of any other book that has as much information on the lesser-known players and behind-the-scenes people in the Negro Leagues than this one. If you are a Negro League fan, you probably already have this book. But if you are a baseball fan in general, you MUST have this book.

Baseball wonks rejoice! Baseball: The Biographical Encyclopedia is here with information about the men behind the magic numbers 755, 70, 56, 1.12, and 4,256. This weighty tome presents 2,000 capsule biographies of players, Negro Leaguers, umpires, executives, minor leaguers, owners, and broadcasters. All the big names--Aaron to Zisk--are included in this treasure trove, as are some lesser-known figures such as D.L. Adams (who has a pretty strong claim as "the father of baseball"), Bill Klem ("the Babe Ruth of umpires"), Branch Rickey (who signed Jackie Robinson to the major leagues), and Charles "Victory" Faust (the New York Giants' good luck charm and occasional pitcher, with no wins, losses, saves, walks, or strikeouts, and an ERA of 4.50, in two innings pitched). Each entry includes cumulative statistics, dates and places of birth and death, and a picture of the subject. The descriptions are warm, if not effusive, celebrating the achievements of the game's greats as well as highlighting the positive contributions of some less fondly remembered by history. Fred Merkle, for example, best known for the "Merkle Boner," is described as a fine player who performed well in six World Series. An excellent addition to any baseball fan's library, destined to be shelved alongside Total Baseball: The Official Encyclopedia of Major League Baseball. --M. Stein

Most interesting historical baseball book.......2002-07-20
With all the trouble baseball is in today, this book provides an outlet for the fan who loved the game before agents, Selig, Don Fehr, astroturf, overpaid performers, etc. You can browse through it again and again, and still enjoy the stories of these players. It is a great supplement to the statistics that we have for all the players of the past.
A beautiful book for the browsing baseball buff.......2001-10-21
I received this book as a gift and have enjoyed it very much. The number of players covered is extensive, and the biographies are generally fair, well-researched, and well-written. As a younger baseball fan who has long had an interest in the entire history of the game, I have particularly gotten a kick out of the analyses of the 19th and early 20th century ballplayers, as well as the pictures attached to each biography. I am a little disappointed, however, that the authors only use the classic, rather banal (generally) statistics in their biographical sketches, especially as the book was compiled by the editors of the bible of baseball, "Total Baseball". It's fine to read about how many wins Grover Cleveland Alexander racked up in his great career, but how good was he really in comparison to the other greats of his day, as well as in comparison to the greats of today? Stats like ERA+, PRO+, etc., would have really put each of these players in the proper historical perspective. I realize that this book is aimed at general audience, and that many baseball fans still deride advanced statistical analysis, but such analysis truly enriches evaluation of the long history of America's past-time. Don't get me wrong, the book is a lot of fun. I look forward, however, to when some accomplished sabermetricians expand the project. Reading about Babe Ruth's antics off the field accompanied by a searching analysis that truly reveals how mammoth a presence he was on the field, will be icing on the cake.
Microsoft and this book........2001-02-02
I bought this book and when I started reading it discovered that I had read the bios on the ballplayers previously. Wondering where I had, I started to do a search in my huge collection of baseball books and cds. Sure enough, I discovered that the biographical information had previously been released on the Microsoft: Complete Baseball Cd that was available in 1995. There is some new stuff in the book that was not on the cd.
Perfect For Any Baseball Fan.......2000-08-28
Without a doubt the most complete baseball reference book ever produced --- over 2,000 bios and photos which depict not only players but umpires, managers and front office executives as well. This book is the perfect companion piece to more statistical oriented books such as the "Baseball Encylopedia".
The game's biggest icons --Aaron, Koufax, Ruth,etc.-- are rightfully rewarded 2 or 3 page entries. While much of this material will be familiar to dedicated fans (Babe Ruth's called shot in the 1932 World Series for example), casual fans will get a thorough baseball education. Hardcore fans will relish the seemingly endless stream of juicy tid-bits regarding hundreds of lesser known players. For example the book describes in detail a brutal pre-game brawl in 1965 between Philly teammates Richie Allen and Frank "Big Donkey" Thomas. The conflict, in which both bats and fists were thrown, was allegedly ignited by Thomas' insensitve racial taunts toward quiet slugger Wes Covington. Or perhaps you'll be moved by the trials of Ryne Duren, a scary reliever who sported Coke-bottle lenses, a 100 mph fastball and a penchant for booze. Duren couldn't find the strike zone (batters feared for their lives), but he sure could find the hotel bar. Duren straightened out his life after leaving baseball. No, this ain't Frank Merriwell, this is down and dirty baseball.
The "Biographical Encyclopedia" brings hundreds of forgotten heroes (and villains) back to life in a most animated, interesting manner. Not only does it make for great reading material, but it's downright educational as well. Heck, maybe Winter won't seem so long this year as I'll have my nose buried this book for weeks on end ! Perfect for any baseball fan.
The best biographical reference work yet.......2000-06-18
Compiling essays on the 2,000 most influential people inbaseball history is a massive undertaking. Somehow, David Pietrusza,Matthew Silverman, Michael Gershman and the editors at Total Sports managed to pull it off -- and set a new standard for quality in the process. Previous biographical compendiums pale by comparison. Some limited their scope, concentrating on only the top players (for whom there already is ample biographical information elsewhere). Others attempted to cover more players but, for many players, provided little more than a summary of the player's statistical accomplishments. The Biographical Encyclopedia doesn't skimp on either count. It covers not only the top players, but also the most notable sportswriters, broadcasters, front office executives and statisticians. More often than not, an individual's essay includes unique biographical info that can't be found in other reference works. The worst one can say is that the book has its share of typos and that the writing is at times uneven. It goes without saying that editing a book of this length must have been a monumental task; the errors, however, rarely obscure pertinent information and are more annoying than damaging. The essays were penned by a number of different authors, so it is perhaps inevitable that some entries are better than others. The least impressive, however, are no worse than those from similar books in the past. Overall, the book marks a substantial improvement over previous efforts, and is priced quite reasonably. It would be a valuable additon to a serious fan's library, and would give a more casual fan hours of enjoyment.

Book Description
Based on E. Annie Proulx's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Shipping News traces the unlikely tale of Quoyle, who, after the death of his estranged wife, is left grieving with his daughter Bunny. When a long lost aunt arrives at Quoyle's doorstep and convinces them to head north, his fortunes begin to change. On the coast of Newfoundland, in a place where life is as rough as the weather and secrets are as dense as the landscape, Quoyle lands a job as a reporter for a local paper. In the course of this new career, he discovers dark family mysteries and finds friendship and love with a single mother who has secret of her own. A dramatic and moving story, The Shipping News is one man's extraordinary journey of self-discovery when he returns to his ancestral home.

INJUSTICE.......2003-02-04
DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE until you have read the book. While "The Shipping News" film is enjoyable it does not accurately portray the characters of Annie Proulx. In the book, the characters are not simply meshed into your memory as they are in the film. For example, the relationship Quoyle develops with Wavey happens over the course of many trials that both must endure before gaining the other's trust. However, the film version portrays their relationship as nearly instantaneous in that they see one another, have a couple conversations, and have one fight towards the end. Is that a fair representation of the careful and elequent caracterizations Proulx enmeshes our psyches in? No. In other ways, too, the film does a great injustice; but it would be a great disservice to whomever reads this to divulge too much and ruin the plot.
My point is very simple. The film version of "The Shipping News" takes out so much of the original substance by deleting the life stories of some very important characters (and some characters themselves) as well as moving the plot around at an inconsistent level that the viewer is left with more of a blueprint of Annie Proulx's aesthetic and charming brilliance than a final draft.
If you are one of those people who hopes to get by with a minimum knowledge of the characters in books, then this film is just for you. On the other hand, if you are a person who craves to understand what is important about the story and all the elements within it, I implore you to read the book before seeing the movie. You will be able to see the pitfalls of the movie that the book explains in a very well-defined manner.
Take your pick:
:0) Book first: Strong comprehension of the material
:0( Movie first: Poor comprehension of what is taking place before your eyes
Will Tide You Over Til the Next Big Thing.......2002-10-11
The Shipping News is an enjoyable fictional novel written by Anne Proulx, which follows the life of Quoyle, a man whose entire life has been littered with misadventures. It is a story that tracks Quoyle's barely tolerable life as he travels from one dead-end job to the next. Eventually Quoyle finds a job as a reporter for a small newspaper. He had originally applied to be an ink setter. However, the Editor of the paper told Quoyle that he needed reporters, not ink setters.
After losing his parents to suicide, an utterly destroyed Quoyle looks to his dead-beat wife for guidance. Her response: Taking their two daughters and leaving with one of her many "friends", as Quoyle calls them.
Shortly after a crucial area of the novel, Quoyle is reunited with his daughters, as well as a long lost Aunt. The small group decides to move back to Quoyle's ancestral land in an attempt to repair their lives.
As the novel progresses we see Quoyle grow from a timid, depressed man, who migrates from job to job, into a man full of love for both his family and his work.
Overall I believe the story is well written. Both the vocabulary and the sentence structure are easy to understand, and the readability helps the story to fluidly flow from beginning to end. Make no mistake, there are some graphic scenes depicted in the book, which aren't suitable for the younger audience.
Proulx writes in a manner that makes the plot quite believable. Proulx' writing also helps to create a realistic reality, one where the characters to interact amongst themselves and one another in. The characters themselves are quite remarkable as well, and we can see them mature as their lives unfold before our eyes. All in all, The Shipping News is a thoroughly enjoyable, though sometimes shocking read from beginning to end.
Coming from a fairly knowledgeable reader, this book is a decent read if you have some free time. But this isn't one of those novels that shouts exceptional quality or style. It will tide you over until one of those groundbreaking novels does come out.
The Feel-Good Film of the Year.......2002-02-11
Hollywood took a realistic book filled with tough hard characters and an even tougher and more unforgiving place and turned it into the feel good film of the year. (At least it wasn't as bad as the Disney-fication of the black academic comic novel, Krippendorf's Tribe.)
Book Description
The history of tattooing is shrouded in controversy. Citing the Polynesian derivation of the word “tattoo,” many scholars and tattoo enthusiasts have believed that the modern practice of tattooing originated in the Pacific, and specifically in the contacts between Captain Cook’s seamen and the Tahitians. Tattoo demonstrates that while the history of tattooing is far more complex than this, Pacific body arts have provided powerful stimuli to the West intermittently from the eighteenth century to the present day. The essays collected here document the extraordinary, intertwined histories of processes of cultural exchange and Pacific tattoo practices. Art historians, anthropologists, and scholars of Oceania provide a transcultural history of tattooing in and beyond the Pacific.
The contributors examine the contexts in which Pacific tattoos were “discovered” by Europeans, track the history of the tattooing of Europeans visiting the region, and look at how Pacific tattooing was absorbed, revalued, and often suppressed by agents of European colonization. They consider how European art has incorporated tattooing, and they explore contemporary manifestations of Pacific tattoo art, paying particular attention to the different trajectories of Samoan, Tahitian, and Maori tattooing and to the meaning of present-day appropriations of tribal tattoos. New research has uncovered a fascinating visual archive of centuries-old tattoo images, and this richly illustrated volume includes a number of those—many published here for the first time—alongside images of contemporary tattooing in Polynesia and Europe. Tattoo offers a tantalizing glimpse into the plethora of stories and cross-cultural encounters that lie between the blood on a sailor’s backside in the eighteenth century and the hammering of a Samoan tattoo tool in the twenty-first.

Customer Reviews:
One of the two books I will recommend for Money Management.......2007-07-22
This is one of the two books about money management that I would recommend to anyone who is trading, the other one is Trade Your Way To Financial Freedom by Van Tharp.
This book actually covers all issues related to position sizing and teaches a method especially beneficial to traders starting with a smaller account. I understand the numbers in the book is not properly illustrated, and the examples are somewhat intentionally designed, by the logic behind the method is very robust. Meanwhiles the author does not exclude the possibility of other position sizing strategies, he does suggest to switch from fixed ratio to fixed fractional method once you have build up your account to some point(on page 220).IMO, it is actually the best money management plan that will cover the whole life of a trading account.
I strongly recommend this book, as the best book on position sizing, and one of the best( together with Tharp's book) on money management.
Helpful but very tough to follow........2007-04-20
I liked the ideas in the book about position sizing, very helpful material. But the author will throw all kinds of numbers at you without really explaining how or where he got those numbers. The material is probably obvious to the author, so he assumes that it will obvious to the reader, as well. If you buy this book be ready to read and reread sections.
Here is an example: "After having acquired $100,000 in profits using the $5,000 as the delta for the fixed ratio method, we would be trading 20 contracts. The minimum level of profits to trade 20 contracts is $1,000,000. Therefore, what took 4 years to generate $225,000 estimated profits, generated $750,000 more in profits during the next four years"
Did he not say in the first sentence that 20 contracts would be traded for $100,000 in profits? In the second sentence it is $1,000,000? He does not explain how he got $225,000 or $750,000. I am sure Mr. Jones knows how he got these numbers but readers are left to figure it out for thmeselves.
The parts of the book that I did understand, I have begun to apply, such as position sizing. But it is a long and frustrating read.
EffectiveFX.......2006-08-06
If you really want to optimize your Forex trading returns, you need to understand the principles of money management. This book by Ryan Jones is probably one of the best books available on the topic of Money Management. If there is such a thing as a Holy Grail then Money Management is it. With proper money management you will be able to stay in the game for the long term. One of the biggest mistakes novice traders make is that they don't know how to manage their trading risks, that is why the failure rate for beginning trades is greater that 95%. Most novice traders blow out their account within the first year.
This book will be a real eye opener; it will provide some great insight into why proper money management is critical to your success. The following is a sample paragraph from the book:
"you don't need $1 million to achieve $1 million. You only need to build profits that total $100,000 based on trading a single contract. What this means is that a person who trades a single contract and makes $100,000 at the end of 5 years, instead could make $1 million by implementing proper money management"
Ryan does an excellent job at detailing the various Money Management methods along with their short comings. Parts of the book are complex; you may have to read them a couple of time to fully understand the concepts. Ryan does include a lot of tables and calculation in this book but they are easy to follow and comprehend. You don't need more that a high school math background to understand the calculations. This is another one of those "Must Have" books that you need in your trading library. We here at EffectiveFX highly recommend this book. It can make the difference between financial success and failure. Any trader serious about trading for a living must utilize proper risk management principles to be in the game for the long term.
Go to our site to see a list of highly recommended books for successful forex trading.
Complex but valuable book about money management.......2005-09-20
Explains the principles of money management; covers in detail the various aproaches (pyramiding, martingale, fixed fractional, optimal f et al) and shows why they are not optimal for traders. Finally offers his own money management approach called Fixed ratio. Loosely derives from fixed fractional, but reduces drawdowns and risk, while still allowing for improved growth.
The book is complex and somewhat dry, there are LOTS of tables of figures and you will need to re-read many sections. The method of money management seems sound enough although I haven't incorporated it into my approach yet.
Defintely worth reading as money management has been shown repetedly to be key to success in trading (alongside psychology, emotions and good exit strategies - which are not covered in this book).
compulsory book.......2005-04-02
This book contains virtually all information on money management methods. And more. And though the tables are at times tiring, overall presentation is clear, short and no-nonsense. The author presents existing methods of position sizing and then presents his, Fixed Ratio. I think that for small trading accounts this method is the most suitable in terms of the balance of risk and reward.
Other parts of the book are equally good. The chapters on consecutive wins/losses, optimisation, trading systems, portfolios are valuable and interesting. The whole book is written from probabilistic point of view. It is based on maths, even though the examples and calculations are very basic.
Even if one disagrees with author's ideas, this book is one of those few that are compulsory for serious traders.
