Set among the sweeping skirts and social upheavals of Edwardian London, Tracy Chevalier's Falling Angels is a meditation on change, loss, and recovery. Her central characters are two young girls of the same age, whose family plots are situated side-by-side in a cemetery modeled on Highgate. Lavinia Waterhouse is respectably middle-class, devoted, like her conventional, doting mother, to the right way to do things, although suspiciously well- schooled in subjects like funerary sculpture and the English practices of mourning. Her friend Maude Coleman comes from a slightly more privileged and free-thinking background. In contrast with Lavinia's mother, Maude's mother Kitty Coleman is well-educated by the standards of the day, and it has made her restless and irritable. But neither her reading, nor her gardening, nor her affair with the somber, high-thinking governor of the cemetery is enough for Kitty. She comes alive only when she discovers the women's suffrage movement, and her devotion to the cause takes her away from Maude in every sense.
Although the point of view shifts between many characters (with even the Coleman's maid and cook getting their say, sometimes unnecessarily), Falling Angels is essentially the children's story, since it is their lives that are most open to change. The narrative spans exactly the years of Edward VII's reign, from the morning after his mother Queen Victoria's death in January 1901 to his own death in May 1910. Chevalier (Girl with a Pearl Earring) deftly uses the nation's dramatically different mourning for these two monarchs to signal the social transformations of the period. Readers at ease with English history will find Falling Angels an unusually subtle novel, with an emotional range that recalls the best of the Edwardian novelists, E.M. Forster, and his quintessential novel of Edwardian manners, Howard's End. --Regina Marler
Book Description
A fashionable London cemetery, January 1901: Two graves stand side by side, one decorated with an oversize classical urn, the other with a sentimental marble angel. Two families, visiting their respective graves on the day after Queen Victoria's death, teeter on the brink of a new era. The Colemans and the Waterhouses are divided by social class as well as taste. They would certainly not have become acquainted had not their two girls, meeting behind the tombstones, become best friends. And, even more unsuitably, become involved with the gravedigger's muddy son.
As the girls grow up, as the new king changes social customs, as a new, forward-thinking era takes wing, the lives and fortunes of the two families become more and more closely intertwined-neighbors in life as well as death.
Against a gas-lit backdrop of social and political history, Tracy Chevalier explores the prejudices and flaws of a changing time. A novel that is at once elegant, daring, original, and compelling, Falling Angels is a splendid follow-up to the book The New York Times called "marvelously evocative" and The Wall Street Journal deemed "triumphant."

Historical fiction that educates as well as entertains.......2007-04-25
The story of Maude Coleman, Lavinia Waterhouse and their families is told in the first person by each character involved so it reads very much like a diary. I like how the reader gets to see everyone's perspectives on a situation instead of hearing a story from just one angle. We hear the traditional and modern views of the time...in a changing world where the women's suffrage movement is getting more and more forceful leading (in this story) to the Hyde Park demonstration.
As someone who enjoys walking around old Victorian cemeteries it was lovely to have this one brought to life with the people who visited and worked there. I found the details of mourning etiquette during the Victorian period and the early 1900's fascinating: How long is acceptable to mourn, what to wear and what to do with it after the mourning period is over, and the views of the time on cremation and who should be buried where in the cemetery.
A sensitive and fascinating book.
Insight into history.......2007-01-03
Boy, a cemetary as the lead character! This was the way our book club handled the discussion of this book. We were able to tag each character with how the cemetary affected their lives. I liked the short bursts of narative in the small chapters. There was much to discuss regarding the customs of the time and the role of women. How the marriages worked out - or not - was quite surprising.
We left the book wanting to know what happened next.
"Absolutely loved this book!!!!".......2006-11-07
I could not wait till bedtime to pick this book up and read on. It was written so well and kept me wanting to know more. This book was fantastic and I would recommend it to everyone.
yawn...........2006-10-31
I typically loved historical novels but this one was a snoozer. Totally uneventful until the end--and then bad things happen to the only characters you can actually like! The constant change of voice was too choppy.
o.k........2006-08-06
i didn't find is quite as good as her other books, but it''s still a very good book.

Great Book!.......2007-09-28
This is a enjoyable royal biography, and it's the first one that I have ever read that tell about the life of Queen Maud of Norway! Other books, barely mention her, but this author actually tell about her life and personality!
The only thing I have against this book is that the author tends to focus more on King George V as well as Queen Maud instead of the other two children of Edward VII.

Not very interesting lives.......2004-08-27
For five children who included a King, a Queen and one potential Jack the Ripper, there's not a whole lot of interesting detail in this book. (Just kidding -- I know the Duke of Clarence was not Jack the Ripper.) But why are all royalty authors so skittish of coming out & saying that the oldest son had homosexual experiences? All you ever get from other books is just a hint about this. There's got to be information in the Royal archives or in private letters that back this up.
Anyway, getting back to this book, the facts are blandly presented; it gives you an nice overview of the lives, but there's no depth. For instance, I had to read about the middle daughter, Victoria's brief teenage crush on her cousin Tsar Nicholas II, in a totally different book (The Romanovs-Power, Passion & Tragedy). Why wasn't that tidbit included here? Also we learn nothing about her frustration over being kept a spinster in the service of her mother Queen Alexandra, and nothing about her two thwarted romance(s). Was she a masochist, or was it the times, that kept her from fighting back & loosening those bonds? And, again from other sources, I learn that Maud & Haakon VII's marriage wasn't all beer & skittles either, but how bad, or good, was it really?
We don't learn the answer to these questions from this book. So in that respect, it's a disappointment. I don't mean to say I want to read a trashy gossip fest; but this book is just too "nice".

Book Description
The inspiring story of an ordinary man who, from humble beginnings and against the odds of a devastating illness, has led—is leading—an extraordinary life.
To many people, Walter Gretzky is the ultimate dad, the father of the Great One, Wayne Gretzky, and the first inspired coach to a talented young boy. Walter’s major insight into hockey—that a player should “go where the puck is going”—guided Wayne’s brilliant style, and Wayne himself has said about his talent: “It’s God-given. It’s Wally-given.” It’s safe to say that no other famous hockey player’s father is held in such high esteem, and that Walter Gretzky has carved out this singular niche in his own right.
Now, for the first time, Walter tells at length the story of his life, about growing up on a small family farm, about meeting and marrying Phyllis, about raising four boys and a girl in a modest home in Brantford on the salary of a telephone repairman, about hanging onto his modesty and values when the comet of talent and celebrity hit.
Walter also talks about the process of recovering from a stroke that came close to killing him ten years ago. Through his own grit and determination, and with the help of dedicated therapists and doctors, his family and friends, Walter battled back from an aneurysm that left him with many cognitive difficulties and destroyed a decade of memories—including his recollection of the death of his mother and almost all of Wayne’s NHL triumphs of the eighties.
As many of the people who have encountered Walter even briefly will testify, he is very charismatic, and it’s his extraordinary compassion, which has flourished since his stroke, that makes him so compelling. Yes, he struggles with some limitations, but he has also discovered a calling in helping others. All of his many public speaking engagements are for charity, and this book would not exist were it not for Walter’s role as the official spokesperson for Canada’s Heart and Stroke Foundation. The only way he would ever agree to talk about himself at such length was in the hope that his experience with stroke would be useful to other people. “Every second of every day is important to me,” he writes, “and I only hope that if telling my story can help even one person, then all of this will be worth it. And remember, there is life after stroke…look at me!”

a great story of a great man.......2007-01-07
The Great One may be great, but after reading this book I realize that there might be something like The Great Two. If you want to know more about Wayne's hockey life, this is not the book you are looking for. But if you want to know more about Wayne's roots that made him the man he is today, buy this book. And if you find out where you can find the seats made out of hockey sticks, give me a call.

Book Description
This analysis of the ethical challenges posed by new media formats, technologies and audiences considers many aspects of these emerging genres and technologies. It reveals how they work and are reshaping the public sphere, as well as how the connections between product and viewer, and producer and media consumer, are being changed by new shows and formats. With so much interest in contemporary media forms and so many heated debates about media ethics, this book is essential to journalists, media practitioners and theorists.

The Usual Suspects.......2006-06-11
This is the usual array of PC middle-class-bashing drivel that you would expect from the Australian cultural studies intelligentsia. Is it any wonder Germaine Greer fled this country? In their efforts to intellectualise sexy topics and seem somewhat relevant to Generation Why, Probyn and Lumby and their contributors interrogate the ethics of `Big Brother', talkback radio and celebrity culture...yet again.
As usual, lots of words are put in single-quote marks to red-light their importance: `colonising', `difference', you get the idea. Those two words sum it up, when push comes to shove, it's all Anglo-Saxon Australia's fault - everything, OK? Big revelation - and they use lots of French poststructuralists to prove it, so it must be true, non?
Book Description
After several years of a failed campaign to make Las Vegas family–friendly, Sin City has finally abandoned all pretense, and wholly embraced its hard–earned reputation as the modern day Sodom and Gommorah. Jack Sheehan is the ultimate Las Vegas insider. As a respected journalist and longtime Vegas resident, Sheehan is the perfect writer to uncover the dark underbelly of the Vegas sex industry. Through in–depth interviews and hours of observation, he takes the reader into a world where couples from the midwest become uninhibited swingers, shy schoolgirls graduate to $1,000 a night stripping gigs, suburban mothers look back fondly on their days making serious cash in hardcore porn, and randy tourists support thousands of working girls earning a hard living. His intimate look at the world of porn, stripping, swinging, hustling, and hooking in Las Vegas is an exciting, and at times disturbing, look at one of the world's most premisive and fascinating cities.

Part exposé, part x-rated travel guide -- the ultimate insider's look at America's adult playground
Vegas. It's a place where Midwestern couples become uninhibited swingers, where shy schoolgirls morph into sexy strippers pulling in $1,000 a night, and where randy tourists come to score at more than just blackjack and craps. What happens here, stays here -- and Vegas nightlife is hotter than it's ever been before.
In Skin City, journalist and longtime Vegas resident Jack Sheehan goes beyond the bright lights to explore the dark thrills of the city's sex industry. Both lurid and fascinating, here is an unabashed look at the stripping, swinging, hustling, and hooking that have turned a desert gaming metropolis into the world's capital of lascivious entertainment. But more than a no-holds-barred exposé, Sheehan's Skin City offers a connoisseur's catalogue of where to go for readers whose tastes run to the erotic -- with everything from valuable pointers from lap dancers, call girls, and vice cops to porn star Jenna Jameson's list of her favorite Vegas strip clubs.

Possibly Shallower than its Subject. .......2006-04-10
This is a very poor book. It has almost nothing to do with Las Vegas at all. It centers on porn stars and the porn industry, and the people profiled are most vapid and boring along with being incapable of reflection. The narrator's inability to make note of their deficient qualities and provide any sort of insight is its real flaw; however, as Sheehan appears incapable of judging anything or anybody which is indicative of many an academic nowadays. These types concentrate on being "tolerant" and "non-judgmental" which results in their having nothing to say. Porn is a means to an end for most guys. It isn't intriguing or meaningful. It's something in lieu of something else. If you enjoy reading about Las Vegas, I'd advise you to look at other titles.
What a dissapointing book.......2006-02-23
I have never posted a review before, but felt the need to do so after reading half of this utterly useless book. I am a voracious reader who loves stories about Las vegas, but this book is not worth your time. I feel like a sucker for buying it and hope that I can save someone else from wasting their money.
much better books out there..........2006-02-17
I bought this book because amazon keep pushing it to me based on the other books I have bought. Of all the books I have bought on the sex industry, this has been the worst. It gives no new information. It dosn't "uncover" anything. Anyone who hasn't been living in a cave for the past 50 years already knows everything in this book. Yes, there are strip clubs and escorts and swingers in las vegas. Las vegas has a lot of sex going on. "what happens here, stays here." Don't buy this book unless you really don't know what a strip club is, or what swingers do with each other. Save your money.
Not exactly a totally accurate book.......2006-02-14
As one who has owned both an Extoic Dancer Web site and a Las Vegas Escort Web site, I have met known and photgraphed dancers and escorts going back to 1997 anf quiter frankly a lot of information is just not right. While those he interviewed those things might be true, but in general they seem out od whack with the many ladies I have known. This is true particularly for the escorts, as anyone with any brains can see that escorts don't start out at $500 for an hour. Don't waste money on this book, is mostly a lot of hype and while you might find it entertaining, there is just too much that is flat out wrong. There are better books I am sure if you want to get the lowdown on the adult industry in Vegas.
Interesting, an Educational Read.......2005-08-17
The other reviewers are right, this book is not about Las Vegas ('for a good time go here and say Jack sent you') it is about the sex industry and sexual values in America. With that as its subject, this is an interesting book to those who, like me have lived sheltered lives.
The author is a journalist and so the chapters are free-standing articles. The first article/chapter is a visit to the Porn Oscars. It sounds like fun. The next is about a young lady of the author's acquaintance who is a college student/porn actress/prositute. She sounds interesting.
Each chapter seems to take us into stranger and more alarming sexual practices. Are you comfortable with Chapter Three? Does Chapter Six repel you?
But more than that, the author talks about people, not practices. What does a hooker do with her day off? What are swinging couples really like? Many of the people interviewed seem to frankly admit they wonder if they made the right decision with their lives.
An interesting way to go places I would never go and to meet people I would not otherwise meet.

Great Small Business Organizer for Starters.......2006-02-26
I just loved the simple binder aspect of organizing important information when starting a business. Small businessses are one of the fastest growing segments in our economy whether you do some consulting on the side or sell avon - being organized helps you especially when it is tax time + it is usually tax deductible (see you accountant or business advisor:)!
Great for Finally Getting On Top of My Business!.......2001-10-31
The other reviews make this Organizer sound like it's just for someone starting out, but I can highly recommend it for someone like myself, too, who's already in business. Running a business, I've got so many things to keep track of that I really found this book useful for getting -- and staying on top of all the administrative details I hate dealing with. The author comes up with many things I've never thought of before -- like how to track my credit cards to keep my payments lower, how to prepare for emergencies, how to save money on marketing. And this book reminded me of so many things I promised myself I'd get around to "one day," but kept putting on the back burner. I also REALLY liked the format: hardback and wire-bound -- it was easy to use on a daily basis and is solid for keeping as an important reference of my company data. Everyone talks about getting organized -- this book actually helped me do it!
A Great Resource for Starting a Business.......2001-07-20
A counselor at my local Small Business Development Center turned me onto this book, and I've been really impressed. The book is full of checklists, worksheets, and a ton of information for someone starting up a business. The earlier chapters of the book forced me to rethink my whole business concept--there were some key things I hadn't really considered. I'm still working through the later chapters, but am completely convinced that this book will end up having saved me several thousand dollars in mistakes and a whole lot of time.
