Not completely authentic!.......2004-12-26
Living, and having been in several of the countries and places described in the book, I could not help thinking that Charles Fipke could well have been there, but the author had not. It also seemed more about CF than the discovery of Etaki and all that went before that.

Have you seen the Indiana Jones trilogy? Well, Chuck Fipke is that man. In fact, if Hollywood had made a film about Mr. Fipke, people would have discounted the events as "impossible, incredulous, non-believable"! I've only read a few chapters at this point and cannot put the book down. Simply an extremely exciting book. I want to buy a couple books for friends.

Fire Into Ice is three books in one, principally it is a stimulating insight into the mind of an exploration geologist/explorer; however, it is also an introduction to anthropology and the stresses and strains of marriage. An excellent read, but you should keep an Atlas close at hand.

I live in Chucks hometown and have met him on occassion. Having lived in the artic for many years, and worked in the stock market arena, doing private placements many times, few people know what it has really taken for this man to accomplish what he did especially in the diamond industry. No overnight success many years in the making, hard work ingenious thought. It takes a special person to do it. Call him eccentric if you will, Hats off to him, great read, as adventourous and different as the prospector himself. And NO I am not a friend of his at all, met him twice. If you have the chance to meet him personally maybe you can listen to a personal snippet of what the backbone of the Canadian mining industry is all about, borrowed cups of coffee meals on tabs in local restaurants, long nights in cold dark places, plain hard work, which sometimes doesn't get rewarded, and this time did.
Super good read, and tells it like it is.

This book follows Chuck Fipke all around the world and ends up in the Arctic.

I love this book!! It's so interesting to read Bert Stern's story in the beginning because we get to read about Marilyn in a whole new light from a different perspective. It just proves how captivating she was. And the pictures are incredible and haunting at the same time since she died 6 weeks later. If you are a devoted Marlyn Monroe fan, you need this book. It's worth the money because there are over 2500 pictures and it is not a small book. I believe it is 9 pounds! She's beautiful and the pictures definitely capture her beauty, even at age 36!

An impressive little reference guide to Marilyn's films.......2004-01-27
The Complete Films of Marilyn Monroe is an excellent resource for those fascinated by Marilyn and her movies. It is introduced with a copy of the touching tribute Lee Strasberg delivered at Marilyn's funeral, which in turn is followed by two high-quality essays. In "One American Woman: A Speculation Upon Disbelief," Mark Harris takes a look at the course of Marilyn's life, and then Michael Conway delivers a summation of Marilyn's film career in a section dubbed "Marilyn and Hollywood." After this auspicious and respectful beginning, authors Michael Conway and Mark Ricci go about providing basic information on all of Marilyn's films in chronological order. For the most part, these descriptions are of a highly formulaic type, listing the cast and film credits alongside a synopsis of the plot, accompanied by select comments from professional reviewers of the time. Little detail about the making of each film is provided, but a number of black and white pictures from each production help the reader get a sense of perspective on the evolution of Marilyn's career.
The films Marilyn made in and after 1953, the year in which she became an undeniable star, remain pretty familiar to this day: films such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch, Bus Stop, Some Like It Hot, The Prince and the Showgirl, and The Misfits. For most people, far less is known about Marilyn's early films, and it is here that this particular book serves its greatest purpose. Here you will find basic information on largely forgotten films from the early 1950s featuring Marilyn in the smallest of roles, films such as Dangerous Years, Ladies of the Chorus, A Ticket to Tomahawk, The Fireball, Right Cross, and Hometown Story. Those unfamiliar with the truly transformative period of Marilyn's career from bit player to star-in-waiting will want to check out the sections on films such as As Young as You Feel, Love Nest, Let's Make it Legal, and Don't Bother to Knock. The importance of Marilyn's small but visible roles in such classics as The Asphalt Jungle, Clash By Night, and All About Eve are also alluded to in these pages.
From Marilyn's first part in the film Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay! (a part that wound up on the cutting room floor) to her final completed film The Misfits and an aborted new project called Something's Got to Give, the authors trace Marilyn's cinematic evolution from a lovely young woman wanting to be an actress to a true goddess of the silver screen.

authoritative, elegant, informed, disturbing, enlightening and inspiring.
Though I'm giving this work a 5, which is well-deserved, I will warn you. There is much in this work that will incite anger at the memory of Harry Anslinger, who evokes comparisons to all the freedom-haters (within and without America) currently destroying natural rights that should be beyond government's grasp. On this note, there is a "gore file" photo used by Anslinger in his marijuana-hate campaigns that is truly shocking and revolting. Just a warning as you're flipping through the photos that they are not all placid, green fields of scenery.
The intro and afterword, not to mention the attractive cover design, enhance this superb book; also, the price is a bargain.
Tell your children, indeed.......2000-03-20
That is a pun based on the movie Reefer Madness which was originally called Tell your children. Now we have a book by Larry Sloman called Reefer Madness which documents the history of marijuana in the United States. Larry Sloman was once editor in chief at High Times magazine so it goes without say where he stands on the issue of the marijuana laws. There are points when his bias does show through a bit but overall he does mainly stick to the facts in the history of reefer. This is a very informative book with a lot of facts that many Americans do not know. I learned a lot about the origins of a lot of laws in this country. There are times he speculates on what various politicians are thinking when they meet or pass certain laws. This I do not like because he wasnt there and cant really know. I think the facts on their own speak loudly enough without this added feature. I do respect that he humanizes Harry Anslinger and discusses Anslingers dedication to an ailing wife and his fervent belief in his cause. I agree that Anslinger is responsible for one of the stupidest and most unconstitutional laws in this countrys history but he was still human. I also like that Sloman brings up the racial aspect of the dope laws which is still a major factor in the War on Some Drugs today. The ONDPC and DARE may not want you to read this book but it is probably closer to the truth than most of the propoganda they are shovelling.
EVERYONE Should Read This Book.......1999-11-30
Any person who believes that the U.S. government's official policy on marijuana is ridiculous and founded on myth rather than fact should read this book. It provides a meticulous review of the history of this drug in the USA, detailing in incredible detail the progression of the U.S. government's official position on the legal status of the drug. I found it to be very interesting, and easy to read. Any person who wants to know the true FACTS about this drug -- from initial movements by governmental officials to categorize it as a hazardous and illegal substance, to the examination of it's widespread use among a variety of subgroups in American society -- should read this book if they want to develop an effective, and accurate, argument on the subject.

What a hoot!.......2002-01-31
I'm not much into sewing but I have been wanting to "create" some fashions for my dolls. This book gave me a lot of ideas. The gluing part takes some practice, but she sure did have a lot of ideas of how to make clothes out of socks, neckties, doilies, scarves, fake flowers, etc. She covers accessories too, like hats and shoes. Some of the outfits are really wild, but the whole idea was fascinating to me. It was a fun book to read.

I found this book to be a pure delight with it's imaginative and creative outfits for Barbie and all her cousins. It reinforces the idea of "hand crafting" which is sadly becoming a dying art. Your children will have something to remember and an experience to cherish as they recycle materials into wonderful outfits that could easily turn heads on the runway! Make some memories to cherish while you enjoy the fun to be had in this book!
FABULOUS BOOK FOR MAKING DOLL CLOTHING WITHOUT TROUBLE.......2001-10-22
I would have absolutely loved this book when I was a kid -- the costumes are fantastic and easy to make. And you end up with Barbie costumes that aren't just like everybody else's. My daughter really likes this. Because the clothes are designed to make with glue, she can make them on her own too. A great book for mom and daughter!!

This book has some good ideas, but would have liked to have seen more complex outfits with sleeves, also some patterns for slacks, shorts, swimsuits, would have been nice. If you don't have time to sew this is a good book, but if you do, then don't waste your money on this.
Big Disappointment.......2001-03-31
My granddaughter has dozens of Barbie dolls and I wanted to learn how to make clothes for them. I wanted to make outfits I could be proud of but when I got this book through one of my craft clubs, I was so disappointed. What I saw in this book looked cheap and I decided very quickly not to waste my time.

Often confusing and trite.......2002-11-28
There is little here that is new, but a couple of metaphors; however, the compilation is quite original. Of the two metaphors, the snake and double helix, after finding them on almost every page and certainly in every chapter, I found the continuous references at first a slight novelty, than overdone and irritating. I also the found the book inundated with make-believe examples, and "statistics" on the phenomenal growth of the Tiger economies -- a nostalgic hearkening back to the good old days of "Asian values" touted by Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew. Do not avoid this book -- but do read it with another that marries the concept of East Asian values to real-life managerial strategies such as Haley's "New Asian Emperors: the Overseas Chinese, their Strategies and Competitive Advanatges."
Insightful!.......2000-04-16
I found Mastering the Infinite Game to be a very helpful resource while writing an organizational behavior research paper about Asian cultures. The studies and research included in the book are both useful and insightful to gaining an understanding how Asian cultural values pertain to the field of business manangement.
A must-read for those interested in doing business with Asian firms!
