Fantastic success story of a true visionary. Good linkage w/other Texas Titans, James J. Ling LTV Corp. I bet Henry Kravis and Ron Perlman both read it. I wanted to know "where the tire meets the road" this one told me.
Well written, with some flaws.......2005-09-19
Clearly Nance is a level above the rest in his writing ability. Having waded through more than one business biography, it was a pleasure to read one written by such a high caliber author. This was a very well chronicled history of a man who seems to embody the common characteristics of the truly great CEOs described by Jim Collins in 'Good to Great': modest and reserved, but having steely determination and focus.
In general, the book is excellent, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in this genre of book. It is a very good description of how Mr. Simmons got to where he is...
BUT, after getting through half the book, red flags began to appear when it became clear that the author is very hesitant to say anything even remotely negative about his subject. To take it as face value, Mr. Simmons was a perfect husband (despite having his first two wives walk out on him), a perfect father (who's daughters inexplicably attemped to sue him) and a perfect leader and boss. Perhaps this is all exactly as stated, but the author would be more believable if he tried to get a little of the other side of these issues and balance the perspective somewhat. I cannot recall one negative thing said about this man.
I'm not one who is interested in "expose" style books that dig up a bunch of dirt on someone, however it is important to characterize your subject as human. We all have flaws, and it seems strange that these are never addressed. This one-sided take makes one a little skeptical about perspectives taken in other parts of the book (such as his wonderful treatment of existing management in companies Contran acquired).
Still, reservations aside, this is well worth the read.
A Non-biased Review.......2005-09-13
I thought I would write a review where I don't automatically give the book 5 stars like all of the other reviewers. Firstly, this book is the amazing story of how Harold Simmons built his financial empire. I was fascianated by his business deals and genius. The book conjures up conversations and certain events to make it more like an enjoyable novel (i.e. make believe conversations). It left out most of the complex details of his deals to spare the reader from the highly specialized world of corporate takeovers.
This is not an unbiased biography. It appears that Harold played a part in shaping this book. Most of the events are reported from his point of view - especially the breakup of the trust originally setup for his daughters. So, this is more like an autobiography from the man himself. There is nothing wrong with that. But the reader needs to understand that they will only get his side of the story.

Harold Simmons is one of the most brilliant and perspicacious financial and business strategists on the planet. Great Stories; Time for Hall of Fame Recognition.......2003-04-25
I just re-read this book by one of baseball's best. It's better every time: take a walk through TJ's experiences growing up in the Midwest in the 1950s, moving through the minor leagues, and his record 26 years in the major leagues. There's many fine stories here.
He always played the game with class, smarts, courage, skill, dedication, and a sense of humor. And there's an edge to all this: TJ is the winningest pitcher to not be in the Hall of Fame. His 288 wins are not quite 300...so what? It took him 26 years to get those wins...again, so what? John's longevity is testimony to his ability and unwavering value throughout his career.
Each year that John's name remains on the Hall of Fame ballot, his story will remain particularly interesting and timely.

TOMMY JOHN TELLS HIS STORY IN A VERY DETAILED AND HONEST WAY. HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD HAS CARRIED HIM THROUGH MANY TRYING TIMES IN HIS CAREER AND PRIVATE LIFE. HE DOES A GREAT JOB DESCRIBING HIS ENTIRE CAREER, LAST SEASON, PRIVATE LIFE, AND HIS FAITH IN THE LORD IN ONE VERY GOOD BOOK. I REMEMBER WHEN TOMMY WAS A ROOKIE WITH INDIANS AND WHAT A MAJOR MISTAKE THE INDIANS MADE IN TRADING HIM. ALSO WOTH MENTIONING IS HIS COME BACK FROM HIS (BIONIC) LIGAMENT REPLACEMENT AND THE TRAGIC FALL OF HIS INFANT SON AND THE VIGIL AND FAITH HE AND HIS WIFE HAD DURING THESE TRYING TIMES. TOMMY SEEMS LIKE A PRETTY GOOD GUY AND HIS STORY IS A VERY GOOD READ.

Beautiful glossies of the past decade's most significant crop circles coupled with an excellent popular scientific approach to the phenomenon.
The mathematics of crop circles, one of the book's appendices, is easy enough to follow by anyone with a high school knowledge of trigonometry. This text is good-looking enough to display on a coffee table!
A Hearty Endorsement.......2005-08-02
If you are going to read about crop circles, start with this book. The book is well written, taut, and short. The math is explained very well and should not be intimidating. He very quickly cuts through the esoteric overlays of "little space men" and supernatural interpretations that clutter up so many books on this topic.
Nicely written.......2004-04-28
A well worthwhile look at crop circles. The author puts forward his hypothesis, and he does so convincingly. Backing his statements up with well designed experiments that have at least been published in the scientific literature. My only criticism is that the book is too short. For someone with 12 years experience in the field the author either is very good at summarising all of his conjectures, or he deliberately simplifies it into a huge picture fest in an attempt to sell more books. More examples and more analyses would not have gone astray. Most definately a nice book to look at, and a very entertaining read for a couple of hours.
Well Written!.......2003-07-03
Dr. Haselhoff has written one of the best books on the controversal subject of crop formations (and I have read most of them.) I have seen and heard him interviewed. He is a scientist, and as such presents his findings in a completely unbiased fashion. His conclusion: People may be making these patterns, but we have no idea how. We are unable to explain the uniform node lengthening found in the plants, balls of light that have been videoed and photographed many times, dead files stuck to the plants, numerous instances of camera and watch batteries dying in these fields, etc. If there were a trivial explanation for this mystery, we would have found it 20 years ago. Read this book and others on the subject if you are interested in what may be the most important ongoing mystery in the world today.
Something is going on.......2003-05-16
If you have reached this page than you probably have more than a passing interest in the subject or phenomena known as crop circles. To take a quote from an old rock and roll( recently also sampled for hip-hop) song by Buffalo Springfield, "Something's happening here , what it is ain't exaclty clear." The Ph.D author explains some rather peculiar circumstances occurring throughout the globe, including the hoaxes, even those pertetuated by the media to the layman in a pretty easily digestable style. If you are like me, have a rudimentary background in science, not particularly linear in your thinking than this book will serve you well. All sides are presented. There were a few sections with graphs and such that were just a little to scientific for me but worthwhile nonetheless to get better insight into this unknown field that is growing in accumulated data. The book is NOT trying to convince you one way or the other as to the source of these mysterious symbols and the aftermath that results. What the author DOES do is present a concise overview of these occurrences and lets YOU be the judge as to the authenticity of this phenomena that goes obviously beyond ropes and ladders. There are no answers, some speculation and definitely some puzzling things going on. Check it out for yourself and YOU be the judge.

Wow this book is meaty. It is a complete book to build strongholds of every type and size. It is complete with resource costs and the build times. It covers things like government offices and employees and the cost of each. It explains what they do which is nice. It also gives skill DCs and levels required to build various structures.
It covers governing too as well as government types, corruption and mass combat just adds to the usefulness of this book.
The only thing this book is missing and the reason I did not give it 5 stars is random tables. I have 30+ kingdoms to create in my world and some I don't have any idea about yet. Some randomness would be nice.
