AN EASY READ.......2006-11-27
THIS IS ABOUT CHYNA FORMER WWE LADY WRESTLER. IT CONTAINS A VERY SIMPLE AND NOT VERY DETAILED STORY OF HOW CHYNA WAS INVENTED, PROGRESSION OF HER CAREER AND STORY LINES AND A LITTLE ABOUT THE REAL CHYNA, LAURIE LAURER. IT DOESN'T TAKE MUCH BRAIN POWER TO READ THIS AND IT IS SOMEWHAT ENTERTAINING AND INTERESTING. I SUGGEST IT FOR FANS OF CHYNA AND THOSE WHO WANT TO TURN THEIR BRAIN OFF. NOT BAD.
Great !.......2004-11-01
I feel its a wonderful book. She has been a great wrestler and a first.I am a great fan of hers. One hopes there are improved versions of it later.However...I would recommend it. The pictures are wonderful.
Not a good book. An OK intro to the first lady of wrestling.......2001-02-08
Remembering it is a slim paperback that will fit into your pocket, the best part of the book was the early years, and maybe some of the photos. The rest of the book, is a printed copy of the wrestling commentary you hear twice a week anyway. Don't get excited about the pre-surgery photos. There is only one good one. The other is just two bodies mid wrestle. It could be anyone.
Save your money for something else, her new book perhaps?? Or paying for a pay per view episode.
A look before Playboy!.......2000-10-10
This is an OK book about Chyna/Joanie Laurer. I think the best thing is the pre-WWF photo's of her. It's amazing to see how different she looked before all the plastic surgery. A far cry from the picture's you see in Playboy now.
Impressed by Chyna not the book!!.......2000-08-09
If you don't know much about Chyna/Joanie Laurer then this is a good book.If you're a big fan of Chyna then you probably already know most of the info in the book anyway.I think the best thing in here are the pre-WWF photos of her (although you can only see her face in one!).I think if you want to read something she had a hand in, read the TALK magazine article or wait for her autobiography due out in November. She also has a fitness video out on September 19,2000 which should be good since Joanie plainly knows muscles.
Book Description
An absorbing and unexpected analysis of the way popular films influence our view of the law. The popular culture of American law has never played a larger role than it does today in shaping the way we think about lawyers and the legal system. Our very definition of justice is now inseparable from motion picture and television images and popular legal narratives, from Hollywood westerns and O. J. Simpson to Law and Order and John Grisham. In Movies on Trial, law professor and movie aficionado Anthony Chase sorts out some of the complex and often contradictory notions Americans have about the legal system. He uses movies to investigate and inventory many of our deepest beliefs about law and politics, and provides a strong historical and intellectual context throughout. Analyzing Dirty Harry and True Believer for their commentary on the Miranda ruling and criminal procedure, and explaining tort law via The Verdict and A Civil Action, Chase also employs Three Kings to reveal changes in international law and The Rise to Power of Louis XIV to explore the rise of the modern state. Through the lens of film, he is able to describe and analyze the symbiosis between the image of law and its actual practice in our cultural imagination, in a genuinely illuminating and entertaining book.
Movies discussed include: All the President's Men Anatomy of a Murder Ben and Me A Civil Action Dirty Harry Erin Brockovich Fight Club The Gingerbread Man Heart of Glass Italy: Year One Johnny Tremain Judgment at Nuremberg A Man for All Seasons The Marriage of Maria Braun The Parallax View The Rainmaker Revolution The Rise to Power of Louis XIV Silkwood Three Kings Touch of Evil Traffic/Traffik True Believer The Verdict Wilson Young Mr. Lincoln

No Fluff.......2002-06-24
This book is completely different than I expected. From its cover and the "official" reviews, I thought that it would be an enjoyable and easy read. It is not. Nonetheless, its analysis-- while not what I was looking for-- is interesting, so I read it anyhow.
Just to give you an idea what you are getting into with this book, here is an extended quotation from Chapter 3: "If Hegel was right, an appreciation for dialectical oppositions can greatly enhance one's insight into the nature of existence, including the experience of historical development and change. Harvard law professor Duncan Kennedy, present at the creation of the critical legal studies movement, wrote a famous law-review article identifying a tension he saw running like a red thread through the history of American law: that between individualism and altruism. Historian Athur M. Schlesinger, Jr., has described American history as a whole in terms of the 'cycles of American politics,' an oscillation in governmental commitment to the public purpose against the private interest. ... Core genres within the culture of American legal cinema can similarly be portrayed in terms of a central and animating contradiction or dialectic specific to each."
Again, not the causal book about how the law has been portrayed in movies like I was expecting. Still, worthy of reading for those with the patience.

A long-overdue paean to the predominant musical form of the 70s and a thoughtful exploration of the culture that spawned it
Disco may be the most universally derided musical form to come about in the past forty years. Yet, like its pop cultural peers punk and hip hop, it was born of a period of profound social and economic upheaval. In Turn the Beat Around, critic and journalist Peter Shapiro traces the history of disco music and culture. From the outset, disco was essentially a shotgun marriage between a newly out and proud gay sexuality and the first generation of post-civil rights African Americans, all to the serenade of the recently developed synthesizer. Shapiro maps out these converging influences, as well as disco's cultural antecedents in Europe, looks at the history of DJing, explores the mainstream disco craze at it's apex, and details the long shadow cast by disco's performers and devotees on today's musical landscape.
One part cultural study, one part urban history, and one part glitter-pop confection, Turn the Beat Around is the most comprehensive study of the Me Generation to date.

Concise history of disco.......2007-08-17
I teach a history of popular music class at the college level and am always looking for extra source material to augment my own notes. Thanks to Shapiro's book, I learned more about disco in the first chapter than I have since I started teaching the class. His research is thorough, including specific names of pioneering individuals, groups, and songs, along with vivid descriptions of related places and events. I appreciate the documentation, which includes at the back of the book, insightful end notes, a bibliography of interesting sources, as well as what every history teacher loves - a time line! I will admit, with so many names I actually took notes so I could keep up with all the personalities. I'm glad I did; I also purchased the DVD Disco: Spinning the Story [[ASIN: B0007X1NVU]] and my list helped me recognize and realize the significance of the interviewees. I wish this book had a soundtrack, but since it doesn't, the DVD is the next best thing.
The story of a music genre born from the social and economic turmoil of the 1970's.......2006-02-07
Turn The Beat Around: The Secret History Of Disco is the story of a music genre born from the social and economic turmoil of the 1970's. Blending elements of post-civil rights African-American culture, the newly out-and-proud gay movement, and the syncopation of the recently developed synthesizer, disco became a craze that flared brilliantly in its time, then fell by the wayside to fond memories and derisive scorn as its pop-culture peers of punk and hip-hop rose in its place. Chapters of Turn The Beat Around explores New York, where disco originated; disco's links to sexuality, its feverish era of popularity, its movement underground, and its legacy today. Turn The Beat Around is a thoroughly researched, plain-terms, no-holds barred scrutiny, recommended for ordinary disco fans and music students alike.

blown away.......2006-01-31
I am a child of the Seventies and a lover of the disco sound. I was into dressing up, going out and dancing in the clubs back in the day. So when I saw this book in an article, I had to get it. It is very good and the author is very thorough when he is going over this era. Those times were fun to me, so I am definitely reminiscing. It's a great topic with great information.
Superior history of disco -- maybe the best of the lot.......2006-01-17
Who knew that disco would ever become respectable enough for a wave of books about it? By the time disco had transitioned from minor club scene to worldwide phenomenon in the late `70s, punk had also arrived, and the two styles were like armed camps, with disco dissed as "gay music" (like that's a bad thing) and punk extolled as raw and real. I guess those sad, grim, grungy straight punks couldn't stand the image of all those queer party boys, mindlessly writhing on the dance floors of every major urban center with their black brothers and sisters, dressed in chiana and sequins and waving fans and feathers while the fog machines cranked and huge speakers thumped out trancelike beats and diva shrieks at earsplitting levels. Punks declared "death to disco" and mounted record-burning campaigns but could do little to stop their least favorite musical form.
Author Peter Shapiro, who appears to be straight, seems to know more than any non-queer should about disco, and says it with panache in what is probably the best of the recent slew of books on the subject. Shapiro expertly ties the emergence of the form to the new gay freedom mixed with an increasingly empowered African-American community - the perfect musical marriage between queers and blacks as both consumers and creators of the joyous soundtrack to liberation. The author has obviously done deep research to uncover the personalities behind all those obscure sounds. The dates, personnel, even studio locations are all here. This was no small task; no musical genre has ever been as faceless as disco, with many of the "groups" simply studio musicians hired for a session or two by the real creator, the producer. But Shapiro casts his net much wider, weaving such elements as DJ culture and its superstars, disco's influence on hip hop, legendary venues like Studio 54 and the Paradise Garage and even gay bathhouses, and much more into this rich portrait of a music-based culture pulsing with creativity. A detailed discography, an amusing photo section of period disco performers and fashions, a useful song index, and a notes section round out this wonderful read.

Picking Apples and Pumpkins.......2007-01-07
It may have been written, but I did not realize this book would not include both English and Spanish text (as the title does). The text of the book is in Spanish only. The photos are very nice.
Autumn Time! A review of Picking Apples & Pumpkins.......2006-02-11
I'm confused by the July 17th 2002 review (Christinemm). There are no Trick or Treaters in our book, just pictures of a family and young friends on an outing to the orchard where they pick apples and pumpkins and have a picnic. After arriving home, the children bake a pie with Grandma's help and make jack-o-lanterns with dad. [There is another book with a similar title, perhaps Amazon has accidentally confused the two.]
In any case... the pictures are very nice and as another reviewer noted, much better than any drawings could be.
That said, if you are purchasing this book as any sort of `Reader', you should know that the text is not suitable for any but experienced readers (imho). Despite the "Read with Me" label on the cover, the average page in this book has 50 or more words on it. In addition, the text contains words like: old-fashioned, Battleview, pretended, collapsed, and caramel. Hardly suitable for younger students. A paragraph (as it appears in the book) follows so you can determine the level for yourself.
This time, Scott's hay
wagon brought everyone
to the farm store. While
Kristy's mother paid for
the apples and pumpkins,
Kristy and her friends
looked around. They were
amazed by all the delicious
things that could be made
from apples. There were
caramel apples, candy
apples, apple jam, apple
cake, and apple butter.
There were pumpkin pies
and breads, too. But Kristy
knew that when they got
home, Grandma would
make the best treat of all-
apple pie!
Three Stars. The pictures are nice and more interesting than drawings. They elicit the warm glow of autumn days and bring a sense of fun as the children romp and climb trees. It is nice that not everyone is white, and that people of all ages are shown. Despite the "Read With Me" label, you won't find a `Reader' here for young children. The only real down note that I have, is that despite the enthusiasm expressed by others, my children (boy and girl; almost 4 and 6) were not particularly interested in this book.
short and simple, includes Halloween.......2002-07-17
This is a very simple book about a caucasion family consisting of a daughter and mother and father who goes on an outing to pick apples and pumpkins in the fall. After the family picks out their pumpkin and apples they go home to make a jack-o-lantern. In the end the girl goes trick or treating with other children. Trick or treaters are dressed as a witch, devil, pirate, ghost, queen, and a monster.
The illustrations are softly done in muted colors of autumn tones. The text is very simple and short, perhaps this would be suitable for beginning readers as well...
great book for classroom.......2001-09-23
This book is a great book to use with a unit on fall. You can teach the 1st part of the book in the 1st two weeks of a 4 week unit and then teach the 2nd part of the book for the last two weeks of the unit. I have used this book to teach about apples and pumpkins to a two year old class and I will using it again to teach a 4 year old class. Be creative. The children can learn the names of the characters. You can have a picnic lunch in your classroom, just like the characters in the book, do.
You can make applesauce, learn the difference between colors of apples. Have an "apple toss" game or go on a apple hunt, make jack o lanterns. It's a great book to use for fall that doesn't use pumpkins strictly for halloween.
Picking Apples and Pumpkins.......2000-10-12
I have read this book many times to all of my Grandchildren. They love it! The photography is wonderful as well as the story. I think it is something that children relate to well and the "fun" of a family outing in the fall has an enchantment for all young readers as well as smaller children that do not read yet. Fall presents such a warm glow of color and the onset of holidays..........it is a magical time of year filled with fun, tantilizing aromas from recently harvested fruits and excitement in anticipation of carving pumpkins for Halloween. This book definately gets a five star rating from me!

Customer Reviews:
For those of us who didn't do business school.......2006-08-13
For me, this book is the best of the lot. I've browsed Amy and Bill's books, read Carolyn's, and Trump: The Way to the Top...skipped Donald's real estate primers because...I'm not interested in real estate. And I have to say--this "workbook" taught me A TON about business basics, and plane old personal success. I think some of us need to hear "Grab life by the horns and give it everything you've got"... and, HOW exactly to go about doing that. This book hits the spot.
It's all about examples from the show, and I don't know about you, but I learn from examples best. It's not nostalgic, it's just basic business lessons...ones that I am surprised most business people don't follow.
Like, for example, Why it's important--and How to be a good listener during--brainstorming sessions. "Notice the body language and look on Bill's face when Katrina came up with dumbass ideas in season 1"...Well, ok, it doesn't exactly say that, but...you know what I'm saying. I actually used this in my department and was shocked at the good it did. My CFO has no idea The Apprentice is part of the reason our production budget is slashed by a third now.
As corny as it sounds, my recent promotion from mail room to management is, in part, due to this corny workbook. --I say corny because, um, there's an entire page dedicated to a color photo of George's face. That's just creepy.
--Funny. But creepy.
I think this book is for people who like emotional attachment to what they're doing, examples spelled out for them, and lots of pep talks.
I also reccommend Carolyn 101.
This book is only for The Apprentice Lover........2006-07-25
I gave this book two stars because the book was a little boring and dragged on in some areas. The best information was in the margins and the quotes not really any of the information in the book. I have read: Carolyn, Bill, and Amy's books and I want to give this one a try.
This book is truly for The Apprentice TV lover but if you are looking for business advice this is not the book for you.
A look at the first three "seasons".......2005-12-07
It's difficult to believe that the first Apprentice "interview" was aired on January 8, 2004. Donald Trump's signature table smack, pointing finger, and "You're fired!" pronouncement seem to have been in our cultural memory far longer. And you don't have to be a fan or avid watcher of the program to be familiar with it.
"Lessons" follows the format of the typical television show commemorative paperback. It's got full-color photos and two episode lists that detail the tasks, project managers, team members, rewards, fatal errors, boardroom callbacks, and firees of the first three "seasons." But of course, it offers much more than a mere superficial episode recap. The bulk of the book is organized by chapters that focus on the various aspects of business that were represented by the tasks: product development, sales techniques, leadership, time management, boardroom survival, etc. Each chapter uses Apprentice examples, both good and bad, to make a point. The pages are liberally decorated with words of advice from Donald, Carolyn Kepcher, and George Ross, as well as Marilyn DeVries, Linda Sawyer, RuthAnn Fry, Gene Simmons, George Steinbrenner, and Alan "Ace" Greenberg. The result is glitzy and not quite as in-depth as the analysis that was posted weekly on the NBC Apprentice web site during the third "season" (analysis that is shamefully missing from the current fourth "season" web page). These examples and recommendations provide interesting food for thought and a trip down memory lane for those of us who have
watched every installment.
Copies of this book are destined to show up at yard sales and used book sales in a few years, but "Lessons" provides moderate enjoyment in the meantime. True Trump devotees will want to hang on to and savor their copies a little longer.
Perfect recap of the first 3 seasons of the Apprentice.......2005-10-09
I got into "The Apprentice" about half-way into the first season and have been hooked ever since. There are so many dynamics going on in the show (such as short term goals, i.e. winning the assignment; relating to team members; and of course dealing with The Donald, and his side kicks George and Carolyn), that makes it compelling viewing all around. Don't underestimate the Donald's factor. For proof, check the oh-so-lame new Martha Stewart Apprentice show.... boring!!!
"Lessons from the Apprentice: Secrets to Success from the Boardroom to the Business World" (176 pages) is a high-end, glossy page book that takes you back to the first 3 seasons of "The Apprentice". While the book is structured to offer "lessons", it really is a fun look back of what worked and what went horribly wrong in the teams various assignments. With 20-20 vision, many of the mistakes that the losing teams made were so obvious (Ivana dropping her pants to "sell" chocolate bars? Danny's "Triple Play" act to get people into Burger King? etc.). There are plenty of pictures and quotes from the Donald, George and Carolyn, but also from the various business executives whose company products were on the line, and in that sense, yes, the book offers lessons.
In the end, though, this is an irreverent look back at the first three seasons of "The Apprentice", and a good one at that. In a way, it reminds me of the 3 (so far) Simpsons books that "dissect" the episodes. If you are a fan of "The Apprentice", you will love this book!
