Let's talk story.......2004-09-25

I've read most of the surfing memoirs available and this is my favorite. If you want the great American novel, read Melville or Fitzgerald, but if you are a surfer and want to hear what it was like "back in the day" this is the book. I can only dream of what it was like to live in the Islands in the late 60's before the breaks and beaches got so crowded (with people like me) but Torrens lived it. The book is written in a conversational style that suits the topic perfectly.

Los Olvidados (1950) established Luis Buñuel's reputation as a world-class director. Set in the slums of Mexico City, it follows the crime-filled and violent lives of a group of juvenile delinquents. The film exhibits some of Buñuel's recognizable themes of love's yearnings, social injustice, and surrealism, but with a layer of compassion that sets it apart from many of his other films. In 2003, Los Olvidados was inducted into UNESCO's Memory of the World program, which preserves documentary heritage of world significance.
Mark Polizzotti explores the historical context, aesthetic importance and biographical significance of the film, providing the first complete overview of Los Olvidados in English. He also presents an introduction to the Mexican film industry and places Buñuel and his films within it.
While many critics have taken Los Olvidados as a film about urban poverty, Mark Polizzotti sees it as a much more personal and mysterious statement about yearning, loss, and the need for redemption. By taking the notion of hunger as its structural principle, he explores the themes of love, betrayal, desire, and death that make the film such a powerful statement more than fifty years after its release.

Not Great But A Classic.......2007-09-29

I first visited and fell in love with Thailand when I was 19. It was not till 1994 when I was 30 that I decided to go native. While helping out at my friend's travel agency, I discovered an interesting letter translation service that was offered in almost every other travel agency. When tour guides had no work, they translated "love letters" for Thai women who had foreign boyfriends. All letters told virtually the same story. Mother sick, brother in jail, buffalo died ... these are the bargirls. In the case of students and office workers, course fees, computer went caput, want to set up own business because boss is abusive and exploitative ...

It takes an insider to appreciate the size of this love letter industry. People who say that it's the same everywhere else in the world ain't seen nothing yet. It's quite amazing that authors Dave Walker and Richard Ehrlich dared to make these embarrasing letters public. I nearly tripped over my own toes when I saw this book in the bookstore back then.

Highly controversial but totally honest, this book reproduces the letters that bargirls sent to their foreign boyfriends. It's definitely a project that took more legwork than keyboard hours, but the authors did include interviews with insiders and also a foreward by a Thai sociologist.

The moral of the story? The line between true love and mercenary prostitution is sometimes blurred in the Land of Smiles. Prostitutes don't just charge a fee for service. They create an illusion of romance. It would be good if the suckers could read this book. It would be even better if they could watch a video of a Thai woman weeping in the phone booth telling her Western boyfriend how much she misses him and then smiles to her Thai boyfriend beside her immediately after hanging up. Still, those who think with the wrong "head" are often impervious to reason.

But anyone who has dated traditional Thai women would also have noticed that even good girls will ask for money. The root of the conflict lies in the difference in "money culture". The Westerner thinks that a woman who truly loves him will not ask him for money. The Thai woman thinks that a man who truly loves her will show it with money.

It's not a great book, but at a time when there was no other material on this subject, I thought it was a very good and courageous attempt by the authors.

A very well written book which is an excellent insight into the letters written by foreigners to thia ladies, primarily bar girls.
This book also includes the thai girls point of view in interview form.
Plus a few bar owners experiances.
A must for all travelers to Thailands bangkok streets, particularly Patpong but also relates to Nana and soi Cowboy with some referances to Pattaya.
Maybe if you travel to these areas of Thailand you will see something of your self in this book, you will surely see something of those you know whe travel there.

MISLEADING.......2006-05-09

Having been to Thailand on a number of occassions, I can say that this book is completley biased, and most of all, without any humanity whatsoever.
Rather than just parody or riducule the extreme of romantic or sexual attachement (which you can find in Los Angeles or Kansas as easily as Bangkok), it would have been useful to actually look at the people, their hopes, fears, joys.
Stereotypes are quite useless and misleading in this regard. There is a very wide range of people, both working girls and their customers. But in general I found the former to be very sweet, honest and good-hearted woman. And the later to be generally polite, respectful men, seeking care and affection. For both, there is suffering and sadness, as their is in married life, single life and geriatric life! The authors are so shallow and unintelligent themselves, that no real insight into the people and their liffe struggles and victories ever emerges...

Dragonriders of Pern presents the struggle among the Leaders of the six different Weyrs to be recognized as leader of Pern. Each player vies with the others for the support of the Lord Holders while simultaneously keeping Pern free of Thread. If the northern continent of Pern has been so Threaded that it cannot support life, then all the players lose, along with Pern.

I played Dragonriders of Pern for the First time at dragoncon 2003. The person teaching how to play the game was Todd McCaffery. The game was fantastic. I had a lot of fun playing. The game requires that the players must to some extent work together to survive. But there is still a element of backstabing and good amount of strategy and resource management. To bad it's out of print. Todd McCaffrey stated that he is going to be talking to Mayfair Games about getting it back in print now that they have a little room legally with product licensing.

A fantastic game!.......1999-11-24

I have the first printing of this game and am looking to buy it again (I've lost some of the pieces since I got it years ago. :) ) You can play alone as Benden Weyr or with other players and split control of the Weyrs (no Southern though.) The object is to save Pern from Thread with the resources you have. You have a certain number of flights of dragons to cover your area, and the amount of coverage makes it easier or harder for Thread to spread. There are picture cards for all the Weyrleaders, Craftsmasters and major Holders, all beautifully done! You can gain allies and bribe others (like nasty old Meron!) to help in your fight. The only problem I have with this game is there are so many little pieces (paper disks with dragons, hold crests, or crafthalls) that it's hard to keep from losing them! If you love Pern, you MUST find a copy of this game!

I have been conducting interviews for a small telemarketing department (under 65 reps) for quite some time and have tried 3-4 different techniques to reduce my attrition. Another sales manager told me about behavioral interviewing and that is when I went on the search for books that would walk me through the process. This book goes through a step-by-step process to get you started. This is not a complete program, though, but will get you started nicely. I have since attended a web-based training on this subject, but am glad that I had this basic training guide first. I have lowered my attrition by 5-7% and have since applied this system to a performance review I did on all my staff to pinpoint my bottom 30%. I was not surprised at all who would not have been hired if they had been subjected to the behavioral interview method, but this has given me an even plain for performance standards.
Note: This is obviously for those managers that have had no formal interview training but are expected to hire their own staff. HR specialists would find this too elementary.
