An essential reference on European Royal lines of descent........2000-12-08
This book is very unique. It combines history, geneology and heraldry. Historically each royal family is described country by country. It is probably the only book published that combines individual coats of arms-beginning in the 11th century-with the geneology of the royal houses of Europe. The 150 tables combine these two elements showing the hearldic shields in full color of many of the family members. The book covers the past 1000 years of the royal families of Europe descent and makes some references to earlier time and leaders, such as the Franks and Charlemagne. The book has been a great help to my research on the European Royal Houses, and helps indicate the inter-relatedness of the princely families of Europe. It has some tables showing such relationships and connections between the noble families. It has impressive detail considering the extensive scope of the book and serves as an excellent base for more detailed and extensive research on particular individuals and families. It is a well developed book and useful to quickly trace the descent and hearldry of the European Royals.

In 1977, Rudy Tomjanovich and Kermit Washington became entwined in a single punch that would change not only their lives, but how professional basketball is played today. Because the punch dislodged Tomjanovich's skull and nearly destroyed both men's careers, the scuffle never settled as a dusty bit of NBA trivia. Instead, it nearly superseded both men's notable achievements. The history of that punch (it could not, by any standards, be considered a fight) and the fate of the two men are the subjects of John Feinstein's The Punch.
In the early days of the NBA, teams had their stars and their "enforcers." Enforcers such as Washington protected star players on the court with their willingness to mix it up. With concise prose, Feinstein reports on this era, following strings of trades, drafts, and personal relationships to their nexus. Those who do not think about basketball on a statistical level may occasionally find themselves lost, but Feinstein, ever conscious of his subject, ties the tangents neatly to the core of the scuffle that led to the infamous punch.
Thorough and thoughtful, Feinstein does not make any excuses, nor does he vilify. He simply traces the web of both men's lives back to their adolescent years when it was not about the NBA, nor the punch, but about the game. Anyone who has ever wondered about these two men, or the history of the NBA, will want to read this book. --Karin Rosman
Book Description
When a fight broke out between the Houston Rockets and the L.A. Lakers one night in 1977, All-Star Rudy Tomjanovich raced to break it up. Unfortunately for Rudy, he ran into Kermit Washington, a good player with a great reputation, and one of the most ferocious punches ever seen in sports.
The punch dislodged Tomjanovich's skull, and he was never the same player after. Now he's head coach for the Rockets and coached the U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal in 2000. In the years since the fight, every team in the NBA has turned Washington away.
With his unique insight, style, and bone-deep knowledge of basketball, John Feinstein finally reveals the truth of that night and all the years after. Through this one cataclysmic event he casts a light on the NBA's darkest secrets, exploring race, conspiracy, violence, and how one mistake has haunted two good men for 25 years.

When a fight broke out between the Houston Rockets and the L.A. Lakers one night in 1977, All-Star Rudy Tomjanovich raced to break it up. He was met by Kermit Washington's fist, which delivered one of the most ferocious punches ever seen in sports. The punch dislodged Tomjanovich's skull, and required years of surgeries and therapy to get him back to normal. He was never the same again. Washington was an average player for the Lakers, 6 foot 8, and one of six athletes in the history of the NCAA to be both an academic all-American and a basketball all-American. By all accounts he was an exemplary man, but the split second in which he threw his fist toward Tomjanovich devastated his reputation. Every team in the NBA has refused to hire him in any coaching capacity. Tomjanovich, on the other hand, is a star: head coach of the two-time world championship Rockets, and coach of the 2000 gold medal US Olympic team. With his unique insight, style, and bone-deep knowledge of basketball, John Feinstein finally reveals the truth of that night, and how it changed basketball forever. Through this one cataclysmic event he casts a light on the NBA's darkest secrets, exploring race, violence, and how one mistake has haunted two good men for 25 years.

Two victims: one sympathetic.......2006-12-15
Everyone has a moment in their live's that has significant consequences. A time where everything changes, often as the result of a split-second or rash action. Kermit Washington, then of the Los Angeles Lakers, and Rudy Tomjanovich, of the Houston Rockets, on one night in 1977 in the midst of an NBA Game had such a moment. In an instant, Tomjanovich was almost killed by a punch which had connected with extreme force and velocity, and Kermit Washington was foreever defined by that aberrant act of violence.
Feinstein writes well and describes a fascinating world of professional athletics in the 1970's. He describes each of the protagonists' lives and the perspectives and effects of the incident to all whom it affected. Some great characters of sport past are here: Pete Newell, Red Auerbach, Bill Walton, Rick Barry, Chick Hearn, Larry O'Brien, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, etc. The writing is smooth and entertaining and keeps you from turning away.
There are some problems with the book, however. Editing is poor. Episodes recounted in one chapter are repeated in another. More importantly, Feinstein tries so hard to be objective that he distances himself from the reader. One cannot read this book and not come to the unmistakably conclusion that the reason why the event still affects Kermit Washington is because Washington has never come to grips with his own conduct.
The book relates how never really apologized or took accountability and that his failure to do so, when contrasted with Tomjanovich's ability to overcome in life and basketball, turns him into a self-inflicted victim. Now, Feinstein implies such and uses the words of others to reach this conclusion, but it would've been nice if he would break free from the sympathetic shoulder and challenge some of Washington's self-serving statements. This lack of journalistic integrity is particularly distressing in light of the clear implication that Washington, in an attempt to avoid personal responsibility, has dragged the reputation of another player and his family (Kevin Kunnert) through the mud. Inasmuch as Feinstein wants you to feel for Washington, this book fails to conform to the facts.
Still, an entertaining read and a fascinating look at sport in a different time and different place.
Feinstein delivers.......2006-01-30
The punch. This was a horrible sports moment which affected so many lives. I still get shivers when I think of that event. As a teenager, it changed some of my views on sports, life and the two individuals involved. Feinstein had the incredible challenge of revisiting this event with the Rudy and Kermit and with the reader.
Feinstein delicately, but straightforwardly, tackles this subject, bringing out a wide range of emotions from himself, the particpants, the onlookers and the reader. He succeeds in showing that both men are truly victims of this unfortunate event. Rudy T is not the hero, nor Kermit the villian, although each will begrudgingly play that role on and off for years.
For the first time ever, the incident is studied in painstaking detail. It is poked and probed from many angles. For the first time ever, Kermit and Rudy both have a say about the event. Hopefully, this experience will help both men help. I know this book certainly opened my eyes to the men and the challenges both faced in the aftermath.
" The Punch".......2005-10-31
"The Punch" was an important event in the history of basketball. The author, John Feinstein did an okay job writing this book, but he kind of lost my interest after he started to repeat statements. "The Punch" is worth reading, because it told the event that changed the sport forever. If you are interested in basketball I recommend reading this book.
Quota to fill?.......2005-10-17
This book is a complete ripoff. Feinstein must have a quota to reach because this book is just unbelievably poorily and laziliy written and edited. The repetition is so severe a 5th grade teacher would have given the writer an "F". Hopefully, this is an aberration for Feinstein but after reading this book I came away believing he's sold out = write a book, collect a check. Well, he won't be getting any of my $s anymore.
A great read.......2005-05-31
When i first looked at getting this book, i noticed it didnt rate highly as far as the star rating was concerned. Yes, the book can be repetitive in stages, but i have to say that i found myself enjoying this book immensely and glad i purchased it.....then again, anything to do with basketball and i take to it eagerly. Give the book a chance, under it all it paints a story of two lives and the different paths they took after one misfortunate punch. I am a big fan of John Feinstein anyway, so maybe im not one to properly critique the book and point out its inconsistancies, but personally, i enjoyed it and can only go by that.

A Skating Life: My Story
ASIN: 0966250214 |
Book Description
Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner have spent more than thirty years as skating partners and best friends. Linked at the ages of eight and ten, they grew up together, developed a unique pairs style and performing persona, then won the Championship Pairs event at the 1979 World Figure Skating Championships.
Still at the height of their amateur career, they were forced by Randy's injury to withdraw from the 1980 Olympics at Lake Placid, New York, just moments before what would have been one of the greatest East-West showdowns in sports history. That disappointment brought Tai and Randy worldwide empathy as well as a long and rich professional career. At the same time, it left behind repressed bitterness that manifested itself in sometimes dramatic ways.
With Forever Two As One, a lush, full-color volume with a stunning dust jacket and decorative endpapers, the reader relives the skaters' journey: through their own frank commentary; through the insights of friends like Robin Cousins, Scott Hamilton, Christopher Knight of The Brady Bunch, Hollywood designer Jef Billings, singer and songwriter Stevie Nicks, and choreographer Sarah Kawahara; and finally through 133 photos from Tai and Randy's personal collections.
Book Description
Meticulously researched, wonderfully written; the untold story of a legendary fight and the two warriors who would never be the same again It is considered by many to be the biggest upset in the history of boxing: James "Buster" Douglas knocked out then-undefeated Heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson in the 10th round in 1990 when the dominating and intimidating Tyson was considered invincible.THE LAST GREAT FIGHT takes readers not only behind the scenes of this epic battle, but inside the lives of two men, their ambitions, their dreams, the downfall of one and the rise of another.Using his exclusive interviews with both Tyson and Douglas, family members, the referee, the cutmen, trainers and managers to the commentators and HBO staff covering the fight in Tokyo, Layden has crafted a human drama played out on a large stage. This is a compelling tale of shattered dreams and, ultimately, redemption.

A Great Story, Well Researched, Beautifully Written .......2007-10-09
I am not a fan of boxing, but I do love a good story, and this book delivers, big time. The author crafts this tale of two men using the historic 1990 championship fight between Mike Tyson and Buster Douglas as not only the pivotal point in their lives, but also, as the title suggests, as the end of boxing in popular consciousness. The book is remarkably structured, centering around the fight, while deftly exploring the poignant past and present of the two main combatants. I could not put it down. The research is astonishing, and the author -- while a very fine writer -- does what all great storytellers do: He has the sense to get out of the way and let the incredible tale unfold, page by page. Oddly, by the end I found myself sympathic to Tyson -- a man I don't admire; as for Douglas, he shines forth as a genuinely good guy in a tawdry environment. This is a great, swift read, full of humanity and drama and insight. . Highly, highly recommended for boxing fans and for others who, like me, simply love a rich, engrossing story.

Book Description
"The Citizen Kane of juke box movies" -- Film historian Andrew Sarris.
- Provides information about the making of A Hard Day's Night and includes a brief history of the beginning of the Beatles.
- Looks at the "day in the life" style of the film and explores the individual Beatles as characters.
- Examines the culture, merchandising and influence of the movie.
Go behind the scenes with the ultimate film guides and get the bigger picture. A Hard Day's Night follows the Beatles through a day of "Beatlemania", a mixture of slapstick comedy, surrealism and simple satire has ensured its classic film status. Richard Lester created the film with the intention of cashing in on the success of the young stars and as a method of releasing a profitable soundtrack album. Little did he know that some years later he would be credited with an award from MTV for his part in what many see as the first steps of the popular music video. With this book fans will understand how Lester's film defined the era and captures early 60's Britain in the throws of social and musical change. It considers what the Beatles represented and how much of its success was based on the fact that the film and the group themselves were something of a cultural phenomenon. It explores the style of the film, explains cinematic terminology, offers a bibliography and lists the full cast and crew. Learn what the Beatles thought of their performance and how did the public responded. Accessible to the general fan, as well as film students or critics, Lorraine Rolston and Andy Murray offer insight and background to a cult classic.
Lorraine Rolston is a former film reviewer and Manchester's City Life Magazine and is the Cinema Education Officer as Cornerhouse in Manchester.
Andy Murray is also with Cornerhouse in Manchester.
Book Description
This is the first volume of a two-volume series for beginning Japanese courses. Based on modern principles of second-language teaching and acquisition, Yookoso! was the first beginning Japanese text to integrate the teaching of all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) and to offer a full complement of ancillary materials. In this series, grammar is treated as a tool for developing the ability to communicate in Japanese, rather than as the focal point of the text, and the rich illustration program (including photographs, line drawings, and realia) provides an attractive context for language learning.
Customer Reviews:
A great introductory textbook.......2007-04-22
Yookoso is a good book for learning hiragana, katakana, basic kanji, syntax and sentance structure for the Japanese language. There are plenty of diagrams and fun exercises, verb conjugation is introduced, a helpful audio CD is included, and the chapters progress at a challenging but not overly difficult speed. I highly recommend.
Good way to start.......2006-05-22
I used this textbook in my introductory Japanese class in college, and it not only helped me get a good handle on the language, but it has nice little sections on Japanese language and culture. This helped put many of the language topics into context. Also, when I compare this textbook to some other introductory Japanese texts, I like the approach of teaching grammar, writing, reading, and listening all at the same time. Many other books skip the written language all together, and present everything in Romanji (Japanese words written phonetically in the Roman alphabet). This book slowly introduces the reader to the Japanese writing system, which is an integral part of learning Japanese. If you just want to learn some phrases to get yourself from the airport to the hotel on your next business trip, then you can probably get away with using a simpler book. But this textbook will allow you to truly get a bird's eye view of the language, to better gauge if you want to study further. Also, by the end you should be able to hold simple conversations and maybe write a letter. Lastly, I'd definitely recommend using the audio portions too. You'd be doing yourself a disservice by not knowing the correct pronunciation of words, and you wouldn't want to develop bad listening and speaking habits. So overall, I'd highly recommend it. Just remember that learning any language takes patience.
Written for grammar masters.......2005-08-16
The good news about this particular edition is that the book is exactly identical to the non-"Media Pack" edition. The only difference between the two is that this "Media Pack" contains a CD with a program they claim will help you learn Japanese. This means that you can buy the cheaper non-media edition unless your teacher requires you to use the software. I found the software unuseful, but others in my class reported that the rote drills it offers helped them memorize words.
If you haven't studied a foreign language before, this book is going to make your life a little difficult. It assumes you know all about grammar terms (particle, tense vs inflection, direct vs indirect objects, etc.), and it also assumes that putting those terms in a chart will help you understand the structure of Japanese grammar. The problem is not that it uses the grammar terms- the problem lies in the lack of explanations of the grammar terms.
Sometimes the charts do help, which is why the book gets as high as a 3 from me. More often, though, they're unnecessary and even confusing becuase the pages are so poorly laid out. The labels of charts are sometimes on a different page, or the explanation is, or there are several charts or examples in a row with minimal explanations interposed, or the chart spans two pages when it easily could have fit on one. All of this often makes it quite difficult to tell what the charts are actually charting. The problem with the pages extends to the other content as well- there will be highlighted boxes (which explain a tangential point in depth) right in the middle of an activity or core grammar explanation.
This series puts an unusually heavy emphasis on reading and writing Japanese, so expect a higher complement of kanji to memorize than you might get with another beginning book (~175 in the workbook, but you'll probably pick up ~200). When you look back on the book and realize that you actually know that many kanji, it's quite a feeling of accomplishment. On the other hand, the kanji usage is somewhat irregular- "suki" (adj: liked) is always written in kanji after Chapter 1, but "kirai" (adj: disliked) is written in hiragana throughout the book, despite the fact that it has a kanji in regular usage. Sometimes "tomodachi" (n: friend) is written with its initial kanji and then in hiragana, sometimes all in hiragana, sometimes with both kanji. This makes it difficult to learn proper usages; though Japanese will understand what you write if you write the way you see it here, you may not be able to read native texts.
I strongly recommend buying a seperate Japanese dictionary- not only because of those irregular usages, but also becuase not all Japanese words used activities and in the workbook are listed in the glossary in the textbook.

Customer Reviews:
best japanese learning books ever.......2006-03-30
I used the Yookoso series while studying Japanese at university in the 90's. Since then, I have not encountered textbooks to equal these for the beginning student, or as a refresher course. I would recommend them for anyone interested in really learning Japanese, not just memorizing a few vocabulary words and grammar rules.
The audio portion is exceptional as well, for it provides a chance to listen to real Japanese and repeat phrases to improve fluency, but don't worry: the difficulty builds sequentially and goes well with the book. This series challenged me, gave valuable cultural insight, and very quickly weaned me from dependence on romanized character Japanese and First-grade writing.
This is the best textbook system for learning Japanese that I have ever found. Even while I conversed with a native speaker in my studies, the structure and natural dialogues in these books was a valuable resource to practise conversation and get things going naturally!
Well worth the money!
An decent Japanese Textbook.......2006-03-24
This is the second volume of the Yookoso series. One of the main problems with the book is the author expects that will always have access to the first volume of the series. The book does provide some good grammar structures and some good examples of them in use. Alot of the book is written hiragana, katakana, and kanji with explanations in English. The listening exercises for the textbook are extremely hard to do. Also the book does not provide any of the meanings for the kanji you have to use the workbook to learn the kanji. One problem, there does not exist a good source in the textbook on particles.
This is not bad book to learn Japanese from if you are enrolled in a class. You will need some help with a native speaker or your instructor if you want to learn the finer points of the language.
The book is good in forcing you to know the kanji since a lot of the kanji from the first volume does not have any furigana. It good in helping to expand your abilities as a student in Japanese. This book will challenge you help you improve as a Japanese student.
I never really seen or used any other Japanese Textbooks at the College Level so difficult it is to make comparasions.
The CD-Rom that accompanies the textbook is next to useless. The CD-Rom will use vocabulary that is not in the textbook. It will use Kanji without the furigana that is not found in either of the workbooks. Only use the CD-Rom if want a challenge or a test of the material that is covered in the Chapter.

Book Description
The Illustrated History of Weaponry: From Flint Axes to Automatic Weapons, by Charles Wills, is a comprehensive look at the tools of battle. More than 600 photographs of an eclectic mix of weapons were specially commissioned from the 8,000-piece collection of the Berman Museum of World History. Spanning the globe and more than 3,500 years, they include a royal Persian scimitar owned by both Abbas I and Catherine the Great, a sword presented to Napoleon, the traveling pistols of Confederate president Jefferson Davis, and Heinrich Himmler’s rifle. The variety of rare weapons of espionage and combination curiosa that rounds out the selection will appeal to even the most seasoned weaponry connoisseur.
The Illustrated History of Weaponry offers historical perspective of the people, places, and times important to the development of weaponry, with special feature spreads that illuminate such topics as The Hundred Years War, The Crusades, Naval Weapons, The Civil War, and Trench Warfare. The rare and wonderful pieces collected here and their commentary offer something for the history buff, cultural anthropologist, and weapons enthusiast alike.
Customer Reviews:
Weapons as art.......2006-06-24
This beautiful, photo-packed book indeed outlines evolution of weaponry, but I am most struck by the artistry of the implements. A jewel-encrusted scimitar (1,295 diamonds; owned by Catherine the Great), beaded American Indian club, carvings on an 1880s bicycle pistol and Turkish shield -- all are works by master artisans. Ivory and pearl of pistol handles, wood grain for rifles, and precious metal inlays create a sense that these are objects of beauty rather than ruin. A glossary explains nuances, like the luk of a kris or pommel of a hilt. To think that it was the personal collection of a man and wife -- now in an Alabama museum -- shows both generosity and appreciation of its historical and aesthetic value. This volume captures it all.

Solid low-level adventure in the world of Krynn.......2000-05-02
In this exciting "prequel" to the epic Dragonlance saga, the adventurers venture into the Thorbardin Highlands, to answer a vexing question - if the arcane axe of Flint Fireforge was shattered when that heroic dwarven warrior cleansed the highlands of evil, then what is it doing in the hands of a minotaur wizard? An exceedingly clever adventure that will keep your players guessing until the very end.

Finally, I invited him to speak to our staff about Leadership. His books have changed our entire outlook. We are now a dealership with a vision. I just asked him to return for another 3 day session. Great insight on selling written in a non-traditional format. 365 Daily affirmations with an action plan that helps any sales staff. Looking for next book by Dave.
It works the world over.......2000-02-11
As one of the United Kingdoms most controversial speakers on profit improvement in the Motor Industry, and author of Customer Care In the Motor Industry I thought I had everything covered. But Dave Andersons Book has inspired me to change direction, in my own personal approach to my business and I have to admit that I have pinched a lot of his ideas,to use in my own workshops with clients. A compelling read especially if used with his tapes.
