Book Description
A former madam of a Nevada brothel tells all--sex, customers and business--about the professional prostitution industry.
Customer Reviews:
Good Overview of this Industry!.......2003-10-17
Shaner takes you inside to the very center of the brothel from the women who work there, to the customers to the mundane but necessary operations that keep the whole thing afloat. She even dares to tackle the subject of systematic racism in this industry, which is something I have NEVER seen done in any other book on this issue. The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars is because in the beginning, Shaner uses a lot of obvious puns and one-liners that are irritating and distracting to read. Once you get past that, however, this is a very informative book.
Well Written-Passionate, Daring and Totally Unconventional!.......2001-04-08
A fantastic book! A book of insights and deep dark secrets, offering the reader the most sumptuous feast of a novel to ever emerge from this "other" side of life. A true roller-coaster of emotions evoking laughter and compassionate tears at the same time. I devoured each page, staying up 'til the wee hours of morning with this one-of-a-kind find. Where has this author been all my life?? Read this book and be prepared to discover stories which have never previously existed in the world of literature! They're delicious, funny, sensual, painful and some are outright unbelievable! Overall, it's an outstanding contribution to our real understanding of the deeper processes that shape all our lives, because it reveals the human side of prostitution. Like others, I thought of prostitutes as dirty, misguided and low-life's. Those who patronized them were just as despicable in my mind. But of course, I knew nothing of the real facts until I read Madam. I had never thought about the disabled, disfigured, paraplegics or the mentally retarded who may never experience the human touch, a hug or being held in a woman's arms, except when they visit bothels and the women/prostitutes who are with them emotionally as well as physically. Most women I know, myself included, would not have the level of compassion it would take to hold a severely retarded man in her arms, while he drooled and jerked all over her! The book paints both sides of the story, the good, the bad and the ugly. It's all so very fascinating and a real learning experience. I felt like I was watching the entire brothel operation through the Madam's eyes and heart. Thank you, thank you for an unforgettable experience and life-lesson!

Pyote, Texas.......2007-07-09
My uncle was the Dr. Charles TenHouten mentioned in the book. It showed a side of him I never knew. He married my aunt while they were there. Now I am wondering why she was in Pyote. I remember some mention of her being in the Red Cross. I also have a menu from thanksgiving on the Base during the war.
The story of a major military bomber airfield.......2005-06-05
Rattlesnake Bomber Base: Peyote Army Airfield In World War II by Thomas E. Alexander (a commissioner with the Texas Historical Commission) is the story of a major military bomber airfield that was established in a remote corner of West Texas in 1942. The base was nicknamed after the western diamondback rattlesnake because of their massive presence during the construction of the Peyote Army Airfield. Eventual the airfield expanded to include nearly three thousand acres of Texas. Rattlesnake Bomber Base is the story of this World War II microcosm that is fairly representative of what was happening to suddenly established and burgeoning military bases all over the country as a result of the pressures, needs, and demands of America's participation on the battlefields of the world. A very strongly recommended addition to World War II Military History library collections and supplemental studies lists, readers will encounter colorful characters and gain informed insights into how such feats as the establishment and maintenance of an American-based bomber facility and training ground was achieved.
From Bare Land to 40,000 People, to a Historical Marker.......2005-05-12
The rise of Air Power in World War II is a story that is unprecedented in the United States. From ordering 435 airplanes in 1939, the US was to build 300,000 airplanes between July 1940 and August 1945. Planes are worthless without crews and the training organization expanded accordingly. Little Pyote Texas (population 100) was selected to be the site of a training base.
Texas was considered to be an ideal place for a training site. Lots of land, not so many people, low elevation (relative to Nevada, Wyoming, etc.) so air is denser, good flying weather most of the time. An Army base with a few hundred people would have done great things for Pyote businesses. No one expected 40,000 people.
This is the details of what happened at Pyote (and at many other sites around the west) as the Army Air Force expanded. It includes everything from the problems of inspecting the local restaurants for sanitation, to disposing of the thousands of rattlesnakes upset by the building of the base, to finally todays state of abandonded concrete and a historical market.
It's a fascinating story.

Here are observations and speculations, legends and yarns, even gossip about the habits and dispositions of these extraordinary creaturesrattlesnakestheir reported size, deadliness, and power to charm their natural enemies. Here are descriptions of actual fights to the death between rattlesnakes and other animals and accounts of the strange experiences human beings have had with them, as well as tips on where to find them and how to act when you see one.
Dobie began systematically collecting lore about the rattlesnake world many years ago, using some of it in such regional publications as
Southwest Review and incorporating much of it into essayswith the intention of eventually putting together a book about rattlesnakes. Now, in this collection of twenty-two articles, his wish is posthumously fulfilled.
Only Frank Dobie could tell of this fascinating and frightening creature with such wisdom and humor, thereby tempering "the age-old feud between the snake and man." And the rattlesnakewho once aroused fear among even the boldest men in the Old Westcan at last be regarded with tolerance, respect, and even affection.

Texas Rattler Lore.......1998-12-28
I read this 'bout 20 years ago, and it was fascinating then, as it is now. Mr. Dobie brings to us the Texas legendry and lore surrounding the rattlesnake, both in humor and seriousness. Great book.
Book Description
Rattlesnakes are as much a part of West Texas as cattle, oil, and beautiful sunsets.
Author Tom Wideman, a former chairman of the World's Largest Rattlesnake Roundup held every March in the West Texas town of Sweetwater, shares his collection of stories, encounters, and tips about hunting and handling rattlesnakes. He participated in the first Roundup in 1958 as a ticket-taker, then became an avid hunter, contributing his share of the 125 tons of rattlesnakes turned in at the Sweetwater Jaycees event over the years.
Wideman developed a great interest in and healthy respect for the species, leading media tours, appearing on National Geographic Television, and serving as a model for Gokey Boots. His own boots, he estimates, have been struck no less than three hundred times by rattlesnakes.
With humor and common sense, Wideman tells about celebrities and friends he has accompanied on guided snake hunts and offers words of wisdom and experience.
"If you're going to adopt rattlesnake hunting as a hobby," he writes, "the two most important hunting accessories you'll need are a cool head and a deep respect for the critters.
"If you see a rattlesnake or hear one `rattle' a warning," he advises, "freeze in your tracks. I know that's a difficult assignment when your natural inclination is to run, but you should remain absolutely motionless until you determine the rattlesnake's location. Chances are that if you hear a snake rattle and don't move, the snake will retreat first."
Wideman said his wife, June, made her own deal with rattlesnakes years ago. "She won't hunt them," he says, "if they won't hunt her."
The fascination with rattlesnakes draws thousands of visitors to Sweetwater each spring for the Roundup, where they can sample fried rattlesnake and watch snake handlers demonstrate their techniques. The event helps control the rattlesnake population on nearby ranches and educate the public about snakes and their environment. Proceeds benefit a variety of community charities.

Texas Rattlesnake.......2002-02-01
The Texas Rattlesnake is a story about Stone Cold Steve Austin's life. His name when he was born was Steven Anderson. His father left him, so he took his stepfather's last name. It is mostly about his career in wrestling.
I think this book is good if someone likes wrestling. If Stone Cold actually said anything to the author, the book may have been better. It is a good book to me, but some people might not like it.

This pocket paperback can be polished off in about 2 or 3 hours or so, and as noted elsewhere does not offer many scoops or insights into SCSA's career. I think if it had been written by him or on behalf of him instead of generally about him, it would have been more entertaining. The multiple choice test at the end was unnecessary. The book does offer a quick run-through of his career up until early 2000 when he was on the sidelines recovering from major neck surgery. It was presumably published before his most recent PPV appearance, when he clearly was not at his earlier fitness level. There is very little new material not already available elsewhere. There could have been a few more photographs thrown in for good measure. At this price it could be considered a must-read for serious SCSA fans, but for the casual wrestling fan it might be better to wait until something more comprehensive and duly authorized comes along. Recommended with reservations.

Book Description
In Reality Transformed Irving Singer offers a new approach to the philosophy of film. Returning to the classical debate between realists and formalists, he shows how the opposing positions may be harmonized and united. Singer concentrates on questions about appearance and reality, the visual and the literary, and the interplay between communication as a goal and alienation as a hazard in films of every sort. In three exemplary chapters, he provides suggestive readings of Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo, Luchino Visconti's Death in Venice, and Jean Renoir's The Rules of the Game. Reality Transformed will interest the general reader as well as students in all fields related to film studies.

Book Description
A spirited look at the relationship between physics and religion--and the implications for both sexes. Here is a fresh, astute social and cultural history of physics, from ancient Greece to our own time. From its inception, Margaret Wertheim shows, physics has been an overwhelmingly male-dominated activity; she argues that gender inequity in physics is a result of the religious origins of the enterprise. Pythagoras' Trousers is a highly original history of one of science's most powerful disciplines. It is also a passionate argument for the need to involve both women and men in the process of shaping the technologies from the next generation of physicists.

Frustrated female physicist lashes out........2007-01-05
This book is cliche ridden vitriolic feminist rant against the physics community. The author thinks that male physicists interested in the Theory Of Everything need "a major personality realignment". She thinks that universal suffrage is one of the primary forces that has shaped modern Western culture along with physics and parliamentary democracy. To support this she unconvincingly attempts to upgrade the role of women in physics with long boring sections about obscure women physicists. Did you know that Barbara McClintock's notions have revolutionized genetics or that Lovelock's Gaia theory was enabled by his female colleague? There are various insinuations of God, religion, and Christianity in various arguments through the book. The conclusion is that if we re-populate the physics community with a different type of male and a lot more women, including some with the force of religion in their lives then physics can focus on "different goals and dreams", not particles and forces. Bah! Don't waste your time and money on this one.
"GUT or TOE - Looking For The Basics, Madam".......2006-01-03
"Pythagoras' Trousers: God, Physics & The Gender Wars," Margaret Wertheim, NY, Random House, 1995 ISBN: 0-8129-2200-Xm HC 280 pgs., (10 pgs. Biblio., Index 18 pgs.), 9 1/2" x 6 1/4"
An Australian writer with BS major in physics & BA major in math, Wertheim writes with exemplary literary style & credits include science/tech writings for TV, Radio, & consequential magazines.
Her thesis is summarized in the book's last sentence: "The time has come for a mathematically based science envisioned and practiced equally by both sexes." Literally, this equates to physics being historically & currently still dominated by males (in same fashion as Catholic Priesthood bars women) & whose mission or quest in finding the Theory of Everything (TOE) is misdirected & financially irresponsible - but that society would benefit by having the woman's touch or participation by virtue of females having been acculturated differently.
The author quite brilliantly reviews & chronicles the sciences of math-based astronomy & physics with respect to who, what, where, why & how important findings arose & were received by populace, Popes or "religiosa", & fellow scientists from ancient times to the present - noting & documenting the all but rare females of science who were, in effect, banned by decree or barred from participation. Those female exceptions (Marie Curie, etc.) are exposed in considerable detail, fully noting their censures, the hostile criticisms & limitations under which they were forced to function.
The book is written largely from a feminist's viewpoint, one who has thoroughly documented the cause celebre. I'd disagree with the author's desire to abdandon the quest for the General Unified Theory (GUT) or TOE as too expernsive & socially irresponsible. The book title's reference to his trousers is given in Chapter 1. It is a very good read & we obtain a good account of religion & science, at times wed & other times waging war with the other.
Great selection for a book club!.......2005-12-05
As a female engineer currently teaching college-level physics, I love this book! Wertheim explores 3 of my favorite topics (God, Physics, and Gender) in an immensely readable way. She persuasively sets Western Science into its cultural context, including its religious context. I found her conclusions to be careful - women can bring different perspectives into the field of physics not because of innate differences, but because in general, we have been acculturated differently.
While I have read many of the science/gender studies authors that Wertheim cites in her book (e.g. Merchant, Harding, Noble), I would compare Wertheim to an author such as Dava Sobel (Longitude; Galileo's Daughter). Like Sobel, she writes to an intelligent readership without assuming an expertise in the topic. I have given "Pythagoras' Trousers" to friends with little background in science, but an interest in gender issues (I suggested it for a book club reading). I also lent it to my mom who was drawn to the "God" part of the title. They all thoroughly enjoyed the book and learned more about the subject I teach. We were able to have some wonderful conversations.
Valuable book; less than scholarly but more than truthful!.......2002-12-22
A number of (male) chemistry and physics colleagues recommended this book to me before I read it. After I read it (one of my first books about gender and science) I had to agree with them that it was outstanding - a delightful and eye-opening book for scientists and science students who, like me, had never been exposed to more rigorous writings in gender studies. Wertheim's message is not one that the die-hard, non-feminist, scientist wants to hear. The looseness of the historical and philosophical writing gives feminism's detractors ample grounds, therefore, on which to denigrate it. But truth is truth - and this book rings true on all levels that I (a Full Professor of Physics) can probe. Now that I have read other books in the field of gender studies, I know that there are plenty of extremely tightly reasoned and readable books by e.g. Shapin, Noble and Sheibinger that one can follow up with. (These would convince the skeptical reader - if he will allow himself to be convinced - that Wertheim's conclusions are extremely well-founded!)
An interesting argument, but an inadequate conclusion.......2002-03-26
In the book Pythagoras' Trousers - God, Physics, and the Gender Wars, Margaret Wertheim makes the case that, in its origins, physics was intimately connected with religion. As such, physicists accrued the aura of a priestly caste. In addition, she claims that this religious culture within physics has prevented women from entering the field.
Though Wertheim attempts to show that women belong in the arena of physics, she actually concludes that the only way women will be comfortable in physics will be to change the assumptions upon which it is based. In addition, her lack of adequate documentation and reliable sources (at one point she cites a survey from Glamour magazine) damages her argument so fully that I believe that this work proves that Wertheim is a poor writer, and tends to support the antithesis of her argument. By providing a poor work to show the need for women in the realm of physics, Wertheim has show that she does not belong in that arena. Therefore, by extension, no women belong in that arena. Hence, Wertheim serves only to damage her claim through the poor quality and weak argumentation of the work.
As a student of mathematics and philosophy, I find Wertheim to be ultimately an insipid writer.

The turbulent sixties hits the American families' closets.......2001-07-10
This is a great addition to Tierney's American Family series. It is one of my favorites! You see a typical surburban family, grandmother Pat and grandfather Ray, their son Walter and his wife Maude and their four children, all decked out in beautiful, Kennedy like Sunday best outfits. Before long, however, the mod sixties have hit, and even the parents are running around in crazy colors and Nehru jackets! (The grandparents are more sensible in cute matching colored outfits). My favorite style shown is the Summer of Love stylin' by the teenagers, with a shoking outfit worn by the second grade preteen (fishnet stockings on a seven year old!). The wedding is all fun, wild colors and grandma in a purple afro. This is a terrific story of the silliness of this era!!

A "must" for any non-native business English learner.......2007-09-06
Although many of the idioms and expressions Ms. Gillett brings to the page are typical in non-business usage, the huge number of idioms and expressions related to American business English (as opposed to British business English--in some cases they are quite different!) is an asset to any student of this subject.
The contents are grouped in chapters by common subject, e.g. Discussing a New Ad Campaign, Motivating A Co-Woker, and Conducting a Performance Review. Learning new idioms and expressions is made simple by an easy-to-read dialog that demonstrates (and can be used with a partner) the usage of each idiom, and then is followed by self- or partnered-checking and review. The accompanying CD clarifies pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation.
I highly recommend this text to all--native or non-native speakers of English--who want to fast-track themselves into usage of the American business vernacular.
My qualifications to review this book? I teach this subject, among others, at UCSC Extension.
An excellent book for improving business English.......2006-06-29
I used this book and CD system with my students, a group of adults in an ESL class at a community college. They really enjoyed it! They found the dialogues interesting and realistic. The idioms in this book are excellent. The exercises are helpful too, and we appreciated being able to go to the publisher's website (Language Success Press) and getting supplementary exercises for this book for free.
