      Book Description

1908. This delightful and lively pseudonymous work was in fact written not by herself but by Baron Etienne Leon Lamothe-Langon. The persona created is that of a woman who always tells the truth as she sees it, but it is made clear to the reader that what the narrator sees is very seldom exactly the objective truth. The author ends as well as begins (in the middle of the action), thus creating an illusion of a slice of a journal but simultaneously giving the reader the uneasy feeling that the first and last chapters seem to be missing.

        Book Description

Jeanne Bécu, Comtesse du Barry (Marie-Jeanne, Comtesse du Barry) (1743-1793) was a French courtesan who became the mistress of Louis XV of France and is one of the most famous victims of the Reign of Terror. She first served as courtesan to Louis François Armand du Plessis, duc de Richelieu. Marie-Jeanne, however, could not qualify as an official royal mistress unless she had a title; this was solved by her marriage to Du Barry's brother, Comte Guillaume du Barry, in 1769. She was presented to the King's family and the court on April 2, 1769. At the King's request before his death in May 1774, she was banished from the court, as her amoral presence would have prevented the king from receiving absolution. In 1792 she was suspected of giving financial aid to emigres from the French Revolution. After a trial, she was executed by guillotine on the Place de la Concorde on December 8, 1793. Her Memoirs were written by the French Baron, Etienne Léon Lamothe-Langon (1786-1864) and were first published in English in 1903.

                        Book Description

Minor league baseball has long been the heartbeat of the sport in America and no one exemplifies the pulse of minor league baseball better than Leo "Muscle" Shoals.

Shoals crushed 362 home runs from 1937 to 1955 and he is often referred to as the Babe Ruth of minor league baseball.

Shoals' career nearly came to an end in 1939 as he was shot in a barroom brawl, but he recovered to become one of the most renowned sluggers in minor league history.

Shoals' greatest accomplishment came in 1949 when he hit 55 home runs, a Carolina League record which still stands.

                        Book Description

Final Cut Pro 2 is "the smartest video-editing program available for less than $10,000". Does Apple's FCP2 warrant such a reputation? Yes - because it contains everything required by the serious video professional. You can climb a mountain or head off into the jungle with nothing but a digital camera and FCP2 on an Apple PowerBook and transmit professionally edited DV footage to your colleagues in the office... well you can if you work for National Geographic. If not, you might have to settle for preparing professional quality digital video in your own living room.

The aim of FCP2 Digital Film Making is to show you how to create a movie (from organizing the shoot to logging the footage) and then edit and enhance it using FCP2 to an advanced and professional level. With a focus on digital film making, this book digs deep into the complexities of FCP2, showing you how to go about creating a professional Electronic Press Kit (EPK) for distribution. The result is that, by the end of the book, you will have a thorough and comprehensive grasp of FCP2, having explored all the features in advanced detail, and be more than ready to start creating your own digital masterpieces.... Cannes, here we come!

DVision provides the creative and technical information that is typical of friends of ED books, delivering the CREED (Concept, Realisation, Edit, Effects, Delivery) approach to the digital video community.

5 out of 5 stars The Brits do it again.......2002-02-15

For some reason the British have the best graphics magazines...always the best reviews and tutorials. Thus it is no surprise that the book, Revolutionary - Final Cut Pro 2 by Blissett et al, is such a fine book. About the first third of the book deals with planning a production, actually shooting the footage, and preparing the footage for editing. All of these discussions are accompanied by examples and real world comments.
The rest of the book deals with Final Cut Pro 2 (FCP2) in a logical progression from clip capture to editing, then on to special effects and concluding with sound. Throughout the discussions are examples to work along with as well as a continuing project called "yootclub."
This book gives an excellent introduction to video production, in general, and FCP2 in particular.

Then this is the book for you. I've made 8 shorts now...and I wish I had this book 2 years ago! I've bought dozens of books over the last 3 years but this is the first one that's been wrote by real filmakers. How do I know? There are REAL tips in it. I mean those ones that come from really making a film...not the same moron advice that everyone gives.

There's a real good case study too. It reminds me of my first video shoot for 'The Clan'. There's real good focus in there, but I think they could go further with putting things together.

Buy this book if you're an editor or a director. Definitely if you're a director! I started out editing and some of the directors I worked with could really do with reading this book ;o)

                        Book Description

Do beer yeast rustlers really exist? Who patented the Beer Goddess? How can you tell a Beer Geek from a Beer Nazi? Where exactly is Beervana? Does Big Beer hate Little Beer?

Ken Wells, a novelist, Pulitzer Prize finalist, and longtime Wall Street Journal writer, answers these questions and more by bringing a keen eye and prodigious reportage to the people and passions that have propelled beer into America's favorite alcoholic beverage and the beer industry into a $75 billion commercial juggernaut, not to mention a potent force in American culture.

Travels with Barley is a lively, literate tour through the precincts of the beer makers, sellers, drinkers, and thinkers who collectively drive the mighty River of Beer onward. The heart of the book is a journey along the Mississippi River, from Minnesota to Louisiana, in a quixotic search for the Perfect Beer Joint -- a journey that turns out to be the perfect pretext for viewing America through the prism of a beer glass. Along the river, you'll visit the beer bar once owned by the brewer Al Capone, glide by The World's Largest Six Pack, and check into Elvis Presley's Heartbreak Hotel to plumb the surprisingly controversial question of whether Elvis actually drank beer. But the trip also includes numerous detours up quirky tributaries, among them: a visit to an Extreme Beer maker in Delaware with ambitions to make 50-proof brew, a look at the murky world of beer yeast rustlers in California, and a journey to the portals of ultimate beer power at the Anheuser-Busch plant in St. Louis, where making the grade as a Clydesdale draft horse is harder than you might imagine. Entertaining, enlightening, and written with Wells's trademark verve, Travels with Barley is a perfect gift -- not just for America's 84 million beer enthusiasts, but for all discerning readers of flavorful nonfiction.

                        5 out of 5 stars Tasty!.......2006-01-23

Wells is the first person to attempt this kind of beer book and I think he succeeds wonderfully. Neophites can learn a lot about beer and the craft brew movement (not to mention a nicely delivered short history of beer in the world and America) and the beer savvy will like his chapters on Extreme Beer, yeast rustlers and a home brewing contest. Meanwhile, if you like travelogue there's lot of tasty stuff in there. The first chapter on a "beer spill" at a legendary Florida beach bar is funny and informative and Wells' trip down the Mississippi River in search of the perfect beer joint is a nice ride. Perusing the reviewer before me who declared the book "awful" I can't help but think: it's not that Wells can't write. It's that some reviewers can't read!

2 out of 5 stars The Cheap American Pale Lager of Beer Books.......2005-12-25

Simply awful. Though author Ken Wells may not have succeeded in finding "the perfect beer joint" (as the "premise" of this book seems to have been), he certainly succeeded in writing an awful book about a delightful subject.

Travels with Barley is uninspired, aimless, uninteresting, and and pointless. I gave the book a very generous 2 stars only because I found the chapter on "yeast rustling" very interesting -- it would have made a very good newpaper feature article, as very few of the chapters in the books might have. This collection of mediocre newspaper articles is mashed up into one barely readable book.

If you know little to absolutely nothing about beer but would like to learn a little or buy a nice gift for a beer lover, then DO NOT buy Travels with Barley (stick with one of Michael Jackson's books [not the King of P--, the Beer Writer]).

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining look at Beer Culture.......2005-12-09

Even though it was stated that a goal of this book was to find a perfect beer joint, the true essence of this book (as the TITLE depicts) is to show Beer Culture in America.
It is an entertaining read spotted with humor. I don't think Ken demonizes the American Lager Style and, in fact, drinks his share of those industrial beers along his journey. But he does prove that there's far more being brewed in the US than tasteless yellow beer.
This book is great for anyone who enjoys beer, whether you're a beer geek, brewer, beer judge, or just occasional sipper.

5 out of 5 stars You Can Kick Back With This Book..........2005-08-19

This is not a perfect effort but Wells has written a damned fine book that I think will go down as a beer classic. First of all, he's obviously a good reporter and an honest broker and he does a remarkable job of synthesizng beer's place in both contemporary and historical America. Second, contrary to a statement or two by some reviewers below, Wells is NOT a beer snob and in fact takes pains to explain why Bud got to be so popular and lager came to rule the beer world; he does both without being dismissive of lager or lager drinkers. As a beer geek myself I probably would have liked to have seen a little less travel writing and a little more attention paid to craft beer. But his chapters on yeast and yeast smuggling, home brew competitions and what he calls Extreme Beer are excellent and, by the way, first-class magazine journalism.

Although this book is occasionally informative and interesting, Ken Wells devotes way too way much ink expressing contempt for anyone who dares to like American lagers. There is more than enough room in the beer world for lager fans and Hopheads to coexist.

4 out of 5 stars A very good book, despite the meta-plot........2001-03-08

This book is the main way the people at White-Wolf decided to bring the Werewolf line into their so-called meta-plot, and as far as I can tell it leads into Werewolf Revised. Now I could care less about the meta-plot. As far as I can tell it is simply an excuse to rewrite their books so you have to go out and by new versions to keep up with the "story." I would be so much happier if the good people at White-Wolf would keep their grubby little hands out of our stories and stop devoting so much time and content to their silly plot. Isn't it our role as storytellers and players to come up with our own plots? A game developer's role is to give us an excellent and detailed background from which we can pull ideas and come up with our own stories.

Having said my peace on that, I must say that most of this book is excellent. Remember the Astrological aspects from the 1st edition Player's Guide? Well, this book reintroduces them but on an entirely new level.

It only makes sense that the Garou would look to the heavens to find answers to the universe. They are so tied into the moon and its phases, it stands to reason that they might also look to the stars. And most early human cultures did.

This book is about astrology from the Garou point of view. While it clearly relies on ideas from ancient human astrology, it does a good job modifying it to fit the werewolves. It devotes a lot of space to the zodiac as a whole, the separate aspects of the zodiac, and how these effect the Garou. All excellent material whether you are simply looking to add a new dimension to the Garou religion or you are actually going to take your players among the stars themselves (personally, I prefer the former). There is also a decent amount of space devoted to prophecies and using them in your game.

I know there are some people out there who like pure information without new rules and some who don't think a book is very fulfilling unless it has new stuff for character creation and/or storyteller use. I would definitely say that in this book there is a good balance as far as pure information and new rules, so everyone should be happy. All in all I thought this book was very good and well worth the money. I might have given it five stars were it not for the space they devoted to advancing their meta-plot.

And as the Ravnos Methusalah awoke, hungry, a mysterious red orb appeared in the skies of the Umbra, a portent of something...but of what?

Rage Across the Heavens hooks the Garou into the storyline, with a mysterious Red Star appearing in the skies of the Umbra. Is it the Orb of the Wyrm? Are the prophecies coming true?

This sourcebook details those prophecies, rules for Garou Astrology, details on the Incarna of the planets, and more. It is especially useful on details of the Aetherial Realm's denizens and powers.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Franchising Today.......2005-09-27

There are simply not enough books on franchising today. This book is a wealth of knowledge for anyone interested in franchising either as a prospective franchisee or involved in the industry as a franchisor. Most of the books on the market are geared towards franchisees - this book really serves as a great primer for the industry as a whole and a solid guide for franchisors. It is required reading in our company and I recomend it to candidates. Thanks to the authors for sharing their gems with the rest of us.

1 out of 5 stars More boring than a statistics textbook.......2004-12-16

I graduated in Statistics, and so I know boring books. And, this book was more boring than any of my Statistics texts.

It is written in textbook format. It is also written by a bunch of different authors, so it's really disjointed. As an example, the chapter guest written by an attorney in boring legalese is probably the most interesting.

And, they misspelled McDonalds. In a book about FRANCHISES! I could understand if they misspelled Wal-Mart in a book about franchises, but how can you write a book about franchises and misspell McDonalds? See the misspelling on pages 86 and 196.

Also, it is written to franchisors, not franchisees. Since the marketing of the book makes it look like it's trying to appeal to everyone, it took me a few chapters to figure out that it's actually written to franchisors. Repeat: It is NOT good for franchisees.

I did complete the entire book. I'm not one of those reviewers who calls the book boring after reading a few pages and throwing it away. I am someone who plugged through so that I could warn everyone else.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Franchising.......2004-07-10

Hands down the best book I've read about franchising. It covers the topic in an easy-to-read fashion and doesn't oversimplify. Reading this will yield useful information to franchise novices as well as more seasoned entrepreneurs.

A great book for someone who has a concept they feel might be franchise-worthy as it can help you understand what needs to be done to make you successful with franchisees.

Great for prospective franchisees who get an understanding of what they should look for in a franchisor.

The examples/case studies are very good and demonstrate points effectively.

The only area the book does not touch upon in any detail are master franchise and/or area development arrangements that franchisors/franchisees sometimes have. But I cannot knock the book for this as most franchise books don't touch upon this at all.

Being an entrepreneur who sells a brand name product in a consumer-conscious marketplace is an appealing way to make a living. It must be: the U.S. franchise market hit $1 trillion in sales in 2003. But franchising is a deceptively complex business for both the franchisee and for the franchiser who creates the idea, builds the brand, tunes the delivery system and maintains sensitive franchisee relationships. Franchisers build, deconstruct and syndicate businesses to those who may lack the experience to offer a specific service or product. Entrepreneurs with business acumen and a keen desire to build something for themselves often find that franchising offers many ways to create wealth. This meaty book thoroughly explains how you can succeed in a franchise business. Its nuts-and-bolts presentation is enlivened by case studies from Jiffy Lube, Bagelz, Dunkin' Donuts, Subway, Pizza Hut and McDonald's. We recommend it as essential reading for anyone considering buying or starting a franchise.
