3 out of 5 stars Great book but needs an update.......2006-12-20

Rupert Murdoch is one of the most interesting business men of our day. His growth at the Fox Network and other various news outlets has made him one of the most powerful men on the planet. Shawcross does an excellent biography telling about his life in Australia up through his dominant position in America today. It covers the start of the fourth network as well as the New York post and battles with government regulators. It stops before the Fox News Channel really gets going but this still remains the best biography on Murdoch that has been done to date.

5 out of 5 stars How about an update to the update?.......2003-08-20

When I read William Shawcross' "Murdoch" back when it was originally published (early 90s), I thought it was one of the best biographies I had read. I especially liked the author's focus on his subject's "pre-News" days, most notably a very memorable discussion on Murdoch's infatuation with Marxism during his university days.

Murdoch explains that period away with the following answer: "If you're 20 and not a communist, you have no heart; and if you're 40 and not a capitalist, you have no head."

Shawcross then painstakingly builds a portrait of a man who - over the next 30 years - slides clear across the spectrum to become Maggie Thatcher's biggest champion. There's a great blow-by-blow of Murdoch's battle with the press unions at Wapping, with Thatcher's tacit support.

Of course, things in Murdoch's world move quickly, so Shawcross put out an update edition (this one) in 1997. Now, we need an update to the update. So much has transpired in these six years. We need Shawcross' take on:

- The continued rise of the Fox Network (expecially Fox News)
- Lachlan and James Murdoch's increasingly large roles at News Corp.
- The DirectTV takeover attempts (Part 1 and 2)
- Continued efforts to penetrate India and China
- Wife #3 Wendy Deng + two new young children

...and much, much more. Never a dull moment with the man who fellow (now ex-) mogul Ted Turner heads up the world's leading "evil empire."

5 out of 5 stars Excellent biography........2002-08-27

Very well documented personal (a combination of gambling instinct and dour puritanism) and business biography of the media tycoon. The rise of Murdoch from an owner of a small newspaper in Australia to a global media tycoon. His motif: "power, not money." The power to influence political/social history through his colossal media empire. Murdoch believes that the Americanizing of the world is not only profitable for his business, but a great good in itself.
The author situates the ascent of Murdoch within the world political history (cold war, Thatcher, Reagan ...) and gives an incisive portrait of some of his collaborators: Barry Diller and Kelvin Mac Kenzie (editor of his milk cow 'The Sun').
Written with a good sense of humour, e.g. "... Giles should assume the title of Editor Emeritus ... Giles asked Murdoch what this title really meant . It's Latin, Frank. E means exit and meritus means you deserve it." Or, after Murdoch banned alcohol on the working place, someone replied "Free drunks produce better newspapers than sober slaves". The tycoon was even asked by the Vietnamese government to make communist-controlled television more popular!
Besides, the author gives a sneer at Unesco for attacking freedom of information. One minus point: on different occasions, the author refers to big financial troubles for the media empire without giving the numbers.

3 out of 5 stars Good - but not well balanced.......2001-12-06

The book is quite exhaustive about his beginnings - and his attitude towards competition, employees and enemies, I was hoping to read more about the political favors that he most definitely got in other countries besides the US, Aus and the UK.
I also wanted to know how these political wheelings and deelings have helped him - because lets fase it - with the amount of money/ business that he inherited, it may not have been too difficult for a few others to achieve the greeatness that Murdoch has achieved in his lifetime.
Also the fact that he is still working might have taken away some of the liberty from the author to shed more light on the ugly side of Murdoch. I would have also liked more coverage of the 90s, when the floodgates were opened for him to capture Europe and Asia.

4 out of 5 stars Relatively balanced business biography.......2001-11-21

Murdoch is, to say the least, one of the more controversial figures in media today. His name still inspires visions of the pitched battles that have arisen around the pieces of his empire and the ethical debates about the role of journalism and issues of media ownership. There is a tremendous amount to be learned from studying Murdoch and the way he built his kingdom, and this book is not to be missed, particularly for people studying media history or the media industry.

Shawcross presents a very balanced picture, light on both censure and praise, and manages to give enough personal detail to illuminate the public Murdoch without veering into a personal melodrama. The writing is occasionally a bit dry, but generally of a high quality & the source notes and bibliography are quite valuable in and of themselves.

Book Description

You'll discover exactly how to create real, genuine romantic connections with women without having to use artificial-feeling "canned patter" or memorized routines. You'll discover exactly how to get the attention of the women you want so you can seduce the women YOU choose, rather than the "leftovers." We'll show you exactly how to never again be "stuck," without knowing what to say, when you are talking to a woman.

The book shows you proven techniques and exactly how and when to use them -- helping you every step of the way, guiding and coaching you to become successful with women as quickly as possible.

* How to leverage the hidden power of one simple question to open women up to you faster and deeper than you ever thought possible.
* The specific steps of joking around with women, and how to create romantic and flirtatious "running jokes" with them. You'll see specific examples of this, and learn how to do it yourself with the women you encounter.
* How to go from flirting conversations to getting a woman's phone number and email address.
* How to use the incredibly powerful romantic conversation tool called "Deepening" to get into a woman's world and find out what she's passionate about.
* How to talk to women seductively, even if you are shy.
* The five things you must do to turn a friend into a lover.
* How to build your confidence by understanding the "inner game" of talking to women.
* Three simple ways to get yourself to take action with women, even when you might not want to.
* How successful seducers use rejection to give them energy and power to move on to the next seduction, and exactly how you can use that power, too.
* Eight ways to end your panic around women, once and for all.
* How to ask romantic questions in ways that don't seem corny or overly intrusive, but which still move the conversation in a romantic direction.
* The one mistake men make in asking a woman out that prevents more dates from happening than any other--and how to overcome it.
* The two things you must have in place for the first kiss to be successful.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better modern books on the market to help guys........2006-02-09

This book addresses in great detail how men can best interact with women - from the introduction stage through dating and follow through.

Much more than 'talking,' the book offers terrific insights for men to understand the weight of words, and how the right inflection at just the right time can make all the difference.

2 out of 5 stars No smoke.......2004-09-11

I have to admit that this book has some good advices for "nice guys" who don't get it. However, out of the 315 pages of this book, I would say only 50 pages are worth reading. The rest of the book is either repeated information or all common sense stuff. When I bought this book, I expected to see more practical examples that I can actually use in real life. But I was really disappointed that the few examples in the book are nothing special. I have a feeling that the authors are only good writers and researchers who did a good job in summarizing information about this subject from different sources and make it a book. But they are not true experts in this field. The thing they present in the book doesn't seem like the lessons from their real life experience. I wish I know them personally and see how sucessful they are in attracting women.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2004-03-31

Unlike their other book, this book is actually worth reading (although there are easily a dozen other books I would recommend before this one) for basic information on how to strike up conversations with women. Unfortunately, Louis and Copeland are pretty much the stereotypical AFC's (Average Frustrated Chumps) and their techniques reflect that. They don't understand the insane mindset of women, their behavior or what is necessary to get what you want from them without becoming a victim of some of their more obnoxious problem behavior. They certainly don't understand the 1% rule and the dramatic implications this has for ANY methods you use to relate to women. However, this book does offer some insight into the fine art of actually starting a conversation with a woman. But, if you don't know how to choose the right woman, or worse, you don't know what to do after the first 30 seconds covered by this book.....if you don't know how to foster attraction and also give women a socially appropriate excuse to spend time with you......this will be nothing short of an exercise in repeated rejection and failure. Want a better outcome? Check out the works of David DeAngelo, R Don Steele, Tony Wood, Roy Valentine and John Fate.

5 out of 5 stars To all the doubters(yet again)..............2004-03-28

Whoever just doesn't "get it" about what these men are talking about, I really really feel sorry for you and I think you need your head examined. To every other man who wants to make there life work for them, do yourself a favor and get this book as well as "How to succeed with women". I personally am above average in looks and even I still have to play the numbers game. If I don't and one of my prospects decides that she doesn't really want a date guess what? It becomes a big deal and I mope about it. If I play the numbers game, then eventually(more often than not) I get a date(even in this barren wasteland of women who "hate guys in the Navy"). Furthermore, by flirting with tons of gorgeous women I feel physically renewed and it is so much fun wether I get a dirty look or a smile and a laugh! When I have said "hi" to thirty or more women a day(which is not just for the sake of saying "hi" but making initiating contact with women second nature, gee no s#@t sherlock), it naturally has led into me flirting with them following these guidelines. Like I said in my review on the other book, to the people who are unwilling to honestly try these techniques, if you are going to live your life that way then you have bigger problems than being able to successfully seduce women and become a "true pimp:)". If you have the desire to achieve a level of success with women that was only possible in your dreams, then step up to bat and put in the time and go get the woman of your dreams!!!

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful book!.......2003-12-04

I have their other book, "How To Succeed with Women," as well as their CDs for shy men, and I've found Louis and Copeland to be really great. They have integrity, and helped me get at the deeper issues that stopped me from talking to the girls i meet. They didn't just give me some line to try, which I never would have done anyway.

The only real problem I had with "How to Succeed with Women" was that it didn't tell how to talk to women (at least, not much). This new book does, and it's really comprehensive. I've gone from having nothing to say to women to being a guy women actually want to go out with! That may not seem like much to you, but I really have been totally shy in the past, and this, along with their "How to Stop being Shy" CDs really have made a difference. I'm getting where I want to go. Thanks Ron and David!

5 out of 5 stars Must read.......2004-03-18

One of the best fly fishing book I have read this year. Excellet information and very readable.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for all levels !.......1999-07-20

Wisdom of the Guides is a fantastic book for all levels of flyfishers. The book is full of helpful hints to improve your chances at landing great trout. It is also filled with interesting tales from guides who have seen it all. The book was hard to put down. It is a must read book both for the rec fisher and addict. Remember ....its all in the presentation !

5 out of 5 stars Amazing agreement between the guides on many points........1999-05-08

The great value of this book to the western fly fisherperson is twofold. First is the amazing agreement amongst the 10 guides interviewed on many basic points of importance: less false casting, get closer to the fish, mend the line continually while nymphing and dry fly fishing. Secondly the specific fly recommendations and specific suggestions on how to present them. It goes on and on, but there are many fundamentally important points that will help me be a much better fisherman.

5 out of 5 stars Old fashioned, back porch advice.......1998-12-02

Reading Paul Arnold's book was like sitting on the back porch talking to a good friend. As a beginning fly fisherman, I was looking for honest advice about what kind of tackle to buy and other such stuff. What emerged from the interviews was honest advice and comments that I found very helpful; advice that was not burdened with any ulterior motives. You can't be sure of getting this kind of advice in a store, when the motivation to make a sale can color the advice that is dispensed.

While some of the more advanced topics were somewhat over my head, I suspect experienced anglers would find the homey treatment of this information just as refreshing as I found the topics of interest to me.

By its nature, a "How to" book is colored by the preferences of the author. In the case of "Wisdom," the reader is able to weigh the preferences of many experts, then come to his or her own judgments. I recommend this book for anyone interested in fly fishing.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A Treasure for Your Fly-Fishing Library.......2001-12-28

Gleaned from more than 450 hours of live radio interviews, Fly Fishing Is Spoken Here is a handsome volume that belongs on the bookshelf of every literate fly fisher. Interviews with the likes of James Prosek, Ernest Schwiebert, Valerie Haig-Brown, Joseph Humphreys, Robert Linsenman, Fen Montaigne, and ten others provide a unique perspective not only on these individuals but on the sport they clearly love.

Credit editor Stephen Sloan, perhaps best thought of as the Larry King of the fishing world, for recognizing the unique vitality of the spoken word and capturing its essence in these interviews collected from his weekly nationally syndicated radio show, "The Fishing Zone." That this collection originated as dialogue, with all the spontaneity and flow of conversation intact and preserved, ensures that each of the interviews captured bears an immediacy and honesty seldom retained in conventional narrative about the sport. It's surely no accident that the effect of reading this book bears no small resemblance to the sport it explores: it's somewhat like immersing oneself in a trout stream, fly rod in hand, and enjoying the unpredictable process of discovering the treasures that lie within.

And credit publisher William Trego with creating yet another beautiful limited-edition volume from his Meadow Run Press. The heir apparent to the Derrydale Press of an earlier generation, no other publisher of sporting titles today produces books of such consistently high quality and beauty, and this volume certainly adds to that well-deserved reputation. Slipcased and with original paintings and drawings by the subject of the book's opening interview, James Prosek-a young artist hailed by The New York Times as "a fair bid to become the Audubon of the fishing world"-this is a book with, believe it or not, heft and beauty significant enough to outweigh and obscure its hundred-dollar price tag. Each of the 750 copies is signed by Sloan and Prosek, ensuring that this book is certain to remain in high demand.

                Book Description

Struggles for Representation examines over 300 non-fiction films by more than 150 African American film/videomakers and includes an extensive filmography, bibliography, and excerpts from interviews with film/videomakers. In eleven original essays, contributors explore the extraordinary scope of these artistic and social documents and chart a previously undiscovered territory: documentaries that examine the aesthetic, economic, historical, political, and social forces that shape the lives of black Americans, as seen from their perspectives.

5 out of 5 stars Good book on Black Documentary film........2000-12-25

A good overview on Black Documentary films, mostly from PBS and its early history with the TV series at WNET, BLACK JOURNAL, and the legacy of Henry Hampton with his Blackside in Boston (Eyes on the Prize). The book also covers the early little known history of the documentary film and its pioneer, William Alexander.

"Surfing is the simple act of walking on water," writes Drew Kampion, and the history of surfing is "the sum total of all waves ever ridden." The Way of the Surfer brings together the people and the act of surfing using stories and pictures. As former editor of Surfer magazine, and a fixture on the scene himself, Kampion has been able to track many of the changes in surfing since it caught on in a big way with non-Polynesians. The book focuses on key figures from several eras of waveriding, beginning with Duke Kahanamoku, the Hawaiian beach boy who brought the sport to the mainland. Kampion zooms through the post-war beach boom with profiles of such notables as moviemaker John Severson, board shaper Richard Brewer, and surfer Nat Young before moving on to the heady 1970s, when surfing took a decidedly mystical turn. From the drug-fueled explorations of Rolf Aurness to the "Buddha in the barrel" calm of Gerry Lopez, the tales of this era recall a time when surfing was still an outsider activity, with zealous adherents and strange philosophies. Kampion covers the go-go '80s with the rise of Tom Curren, the seemingly unstoppable champ, and Lisa Andersen, who surfed a path for women in the pros. An appropriate number of pages and pictures are devoted to Kelly Slater, whom Kampion calls "the best surfer in the world." Finally, the book finishes with a return to surfing's roots and a look at the spirited Hawaiian surfer Titus Kinimaka. The Way of the Surfer is an elegant and beautifully designed portrait of the styles and souls of surfers, a collection of words and pictures revealing the deeper meaning of "walking on water." --Therese Littleton

                Book Description

Beautifully illustrated with color-drenched photography of exotic surfing paradises around the world, this gorgeous volume by legendary surf writer Drew Kampion is the ultimate lifestyle guide to a sport that has in the last few years virtually exploded onto the pop-culture scene. No one is more qualified than Kampion, the dean of surf scribes and former Surfer magazine editor-in-chief, to capture the irresistible lure of the sport for the nation's 1,736,000-plus surfers.

Kampion's new book is a short history of surfing worldwide and a portrait of 11 of the most important surfers ever. From Surfer magazine founder John Severson, Australia's national hero Nat Young, and Hawaiian surf guru Gerry Lopez, to the most popular and accomplished surfers of today, Lisa Andersen and Kelly Slater, Kampion spends time with the sport's biggest stars, who share the highs they have experienced, as well as the transforming, sometimes profound, life lessons they have learned. More than any other book, The Way of the Surfer successfully conveys surfing's appeal for men and women of all ages-and why, for so many surfers, riding the waves has become a way of life and a symbol of personal freedom and individual expression.

5 out of 5 stars The Zen of Surfing.......2003-11-04

Step inside the minds of the greatest surfers who ever lived. Learn why Gerry Lopez is called Mr. Pipeline. Find out why Kelly Slater is called "The Teacher." With Woody Brown, Dick Brewer, Rolf Aurness, Tom Curren and others, this is not just a pretty book (although very well designed), this elegant tome explores the (sometimes surprising) philosophy and mindset of these extraordinary athletes.
