Book Description

While recovering from radiation therapy, Suzanne Strempek Shea heard from a friend who was looking for help at her bookstore. Shea volunteered, seeing it as nothing more than a way to get out of her pajamas and back into the world. But over the next twelve months, from St. Patrick_s Day through Poetry Month, graduation/Father_s Day/summer reading/Christmas, and back again to those shamrock displays, Shea lived and breathed books in a place she says sells "ideas, stories, encouragement, answers, solace, validation, the basic ammunition for daily life."

4 out of 5 stars Worth reading........2006-09-01

I would venture to say that any lover of books has toyed with the idea of working at the mecca for bibliophiles, a bookstore. Strempek Shea -- not just any book lover but also a bestselling author -- shows us what it's like on the other side of the cash register.

Shea has a way with words, and her turns of phrase are always skillful and often unexpected. I enjoyed the way she wove details about the publishing business with the details about the inner workings of the store and its many colorful characters.

She did seem testy at times, particularly when describing her reaction to some customers' requests. And I found her denigration of Bill O'Reilly to be unwarranted (what happened to nonjudgment??). And it was interesting that she -- who is so sensitive about her own name being spelled correctly -- misspelled the title of Mitch Albom's "Tuesdays with Morrie."

Those are just minor peeves, though, and overall I give this book a high rating. If you love the written word, you'll love this book .

2 out of 5 stars Another Ho Hum Personal Memoir.......2006-01-11

I picked up this book because I thought it's setting in a bookstore would be interesting. However, it turned out to be just another ho hum personal memoir. Cancer surviving writer is lifted out of her depressed state and brought back to life when a bookstore owning friend calls and asks her to work a few hours a week in the store. The reader does get an interesting tidbit or two about the book publishing and book selling industries, but most of it is an awfully boring recitation of book signing tours or setting up displays for yet another holiday in the bookstore. The author's glib tone is annoying beyond belief and hardly endeared herself to me as a warm human being. The book lacks any organization that I can see and the author seems to have a problem crafting a complete sentence. The book abounds with incomplete ones. Nor do I understand the subtitle of the book as no romance, mystery or drama figures in the book. If you want to read a really fine personal memoir about the world of books I heartily recommend Michael Dirda's, "Open Book".

4 out of 5 stars I felt like I was there!.......2005-08-21

Suzanne's book: Shelf Life was a very enjoyable read for me. Having grown up in Western Massachusetts, and a life-long book-lover, I frequented many of the quaint, unique bookstores she mentions throughout this wonderful book.

Thanks Suzanne!

1 out of 5 stars Un bookish Un-fun book.......2005-07-06

The book reads like a shallow, way too long magasine article.
The shop seems to specialize in self help books, so there's hardly a literary feel to it. The style too is annoying.
For example, she writes that "her dad wasn't big on books".
I would have expected a slightly "bigger" vocabulary then that.

2 out of 5 stars Reads like a first draft.......2005-06-14

I will confess that part of the reason Ms. Shea's writing style bothers me so much is that it reminds me of my own...at least before I get down to the serious business of revising and editing, which she seems to have skipped. Her intelligence and energy do shine through, but she goes off on long, book-reportish tangents about nearly every title she comes across (and she works in a bookstore, remember), without even going into more depth than the back cover blurbs. There is no logical organization or progression of ideas, personalities or events; it's a lot like listening to random breakroom chatter. News flash; it's not so very uncommon for authors to work (or to have worked) in bookstores. This type of environment draws literary types. She acts like she's the sole human being ever to have attempted such a groundbreaking step. Get over yourself.

Twenty-five seasons after shattering baseball's sacred standard for career home runs, the game's most overlooked superstar bangs out the kind of celebratory volume his brilliant career deserves. While Hank Aaron is a center-stage contributor throughout this rich testament of words and images, its real power is in the all-star lineup that goes to bat for his achievements--both on and off the field. Names from within and beyond baseball, teammates and opponents alike--Jimmy Carter, Bob Gibson, Warren Spahn, Rachel Robinson, Jesse Jackson, Yogi Berra, Bob Costas, and Willie Mays for starters--all tip their caps to a man of uncanny consistency, persistence, and modesty. He needed all of that, of course, to chase down Babe Ruth.

It would be nice to look back and recall how the nation got behind Aaron in his solitary pursuit. The sad truth, as Home Run inspiringly recounts, is that it didn't. In his quest for the record, Aaron not only came face to face with the ghost of The Bambino; he also had to look squarely into the ugly eye of the specter of racism. Simply by doing his job as well as he could, Aaron stared them both down with his will, courage, pride, and decency. Jesse Jackson sums up the man, and the chase, with marvelous simplicity: "[Aaron] didn't hit a home run to take dignity away from the pitcher. He hit a home run to assert his skill." Home Run is a lovely reminder of that assertion. --Jeff Silverman

5 out of 5 stars Great book -- made me cry ..........1999-07-11

the book deeply touched me , as it told the life of the great base ball palyer , and his struggle as an african american in the major leagues.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book.......1999-06-22

This was an excellent book with beautiful illustrations. The quotes from so many exceptional athletes really adds to the book. It made a great Father's Day gift, especially since Hank was in Atlanta last week for the book signing. He's a class act who is very humble. He's the type of person I hope my children have as one of their heroes. I didn't realize until I read the book the kind of discrimination and criticism he had to deal with in baseball.

5 out of 5 stars A great book but I have not read........1999-04-08

I haven't read this book but I think it is a great book about a great player as well as person.I was shocked that he was getting death threats from people and it was over a stupid homerun.Thats my review on the book Homerun:My Life In Pictures by Hank Aaron and Dick Schapp and a forword by Ted Williams.

          Book Description

Tengiz Abuladze's allegorical film, made in Georgia, is the best known film of the Perestroika and Glasnost years. With its outspoken and controversial reference to the Stalin era and Stalin's place in the Soviet psyche, "Repentance" was originally shelved but ultimately released in 1986 to widespread popular and critical acclaim. This KINOfile investigates the production, context and critical reception of the film, and the people who made it, and provides an analysis of the film itself and its place in world cinema.

            Book Description

Despite the passage of time, our vision of Native Americans remains locked up within powerful stereotypes. That's why some images of Indians can be so unexpected and disorienting: What is Geronimo doing sitting in a Cadillac? Why is an Indian woman in beaded buckskin sitting under a salon hairdryer? Such images startle and challenge our outdated visions, even as the latter continue to dominate relations between Native and non-Native Americans.

Philip Deloria explores this cultural discordance to show how stereotypes and Indian experiences have competed for ascendancy in the wake of the military conquest of Native America and the nation's subsequent embrace of Native "authenticity." Rewriting the story of the national encounter with modernity, Deloria provides revealing accounts of Indians doing unexpected things-singing opera, driving cars, acting in Hollywood-in ways that suggest new directions for American Indian history.

Focusing on the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries-a time when, according to most standard American narratives, Indian people almost dropped out of history itself-Deloria argues that a great many Indians engaged the very same forces of modernization that were leading non-Indians to reevaluate their own under-standings of themselves and their society. He examines longstanding stereotypes of Indians as invariably violent, suggesting that even as such views continued in American popular culture, they were also transformed by the violence at Wounded Knee. He tells how Indians came to represent themselves in Wild West shows and Hollywood films and also examines sports, music, and even Indian people's use of the automobile-an ironic counterpoint to today's highways teeming with Dakota pick-ups and Cherokee sport utility vehicles.

Throughout, Deloria shows us anomalies that resist pigeonholing and force us to rethink familiar expectations. Whether considering the Hollywood films of James Young Deer or the Hall of Fame baseball career of pitcher Charles Albert Bender, he persuasively demonstrates that a significant number of Indian people engaged in modernity-and helped shape its anxieties and its textures-at the very moment they were being defined as "primitive."

These "secret histories," Deloria suggests, compel us to reconsider our own current expectations about what Indian people should be, how they should act, and even what they should look like. More important, he shows how such seemingly harmless (even if unconscious) expectations contribute to the racism and injustice that still haunt the experience of many Native American people today.

"Marty Sez" again proves that mad scientist Marty Bergen knows his Standard American as well as anyone. Novice to intermediate players will find a wealth of tips here. The only problem is that the format that Marty uses (readers of "Points Schmoints" will realize this was inspired by Harvey Penick's "Little Red Book" of golf) often forces important lessons into too little space, leaving the reader with the feeling that there should be more discussion. Nevertheless, a book well worth reading for the I/N crowd.

In Marty Sez...: Bergen's Bevy of Bridge Secrets, Marty Bergen once again leads his readers on a jovial romp through the expert bridge player's approach to the game. This small volume continues purposfully along the path established in Points Schmoints! Read it with joy. Discuss what you read earnestly with your partner. Improve your bidding. Improve your card play. Improve your partnership relationship. Have more fun. Maybe even win more often (or at least make more opponents work for a good round against you).

Value Investing For Dummies takes you on a journey to the tried-and-true principles of valuing stock as one would value a business. (After all, how can you disconnect the two, as a share of stock is a share of the business?) This book covers tools that every value investor must be aware of and use, such as: annual reports, income statements, balance sheets, and price/earnings ratios. Value Investing For Dummies uses these tools to create a complete overview of this proven investment approach. You’ll discover why annual reports and information contained in them are so important, how you should use that information to improve your investing, and when you should make your investments. 1 out of 5 stars Dont Buy It.......2007-08-22

I am flat out Pissed Off that i paid for this book and i am most likely going to write a letter to the publisher and request my money back.

There are Countless typos within this book. Stupid things like forgetting a period, spelling errors, and print errors like a margin overlapping text. These are minor and not really a big deal but the following is...

As you probably know value investing is rooted in understanding a company up and down... this requires a view into their balance sheets and other financial data. This book attempts to explain this BUT the images of balance sheets they use are UNREADABLE! It looks like they used a small image of the balance sheet and blew it up to the point that the distortion just makes it totally unreadable.

After a few pages of that, and text that referenced unreadable images i said screw this book and moved on.

I highly suggest you find another value investing book... normally i really like the Dummies books, but this one is just no good.

4 out of 5 stars Value Investing for Dummies.......2005-03-22

It is a good book for beginners in the subject of value investing. It is quite comprehensive but a bit long-winded at times.

The only problem I find is that, for practical purposes, it stated that either you create your own intrinsic value model using Excel/Lotus spreadsheet or use the prepackaged Web model - the Quicken Stock Analyzer. However, to use the Quicken Stock Analyzer, you need to be a member. To get a Quicken.com Member ID, you need a current version of Quicken 2001, 2002, 2003 or 2004. When you install and register your copy of Quicken, you can specify your desired Quicken.com Member ID at that time.

If you, a beginner, does not use Quicken software or does not know how to input the given formula into the Excel worksheet - tough. Another way is to read a more difficult book by A. Damodaran on value investing.

Other than the above, the book is a good introduction and the first book to be read on value investing.

                  5 out of 5 stars Nothing Better--For Beginners.......2003-04-17

After reading many books on Warren Buffett and, more broadly, on the subject of value investing, I still found myself a bit lacking in how to identify the true worth of a business. The reason for this was that many of the books assumed more than, in fact, I really knew.

(This is not to say that such books were of no value to me or won't be for you. It is simply stating the obvious: without a solid grounding in how to evaluate, and quantify, what any of the businesses I looked at were worth, I was strongly limited in my efforts of making good investment decisions. I was able to tell, for instance, that a company was competently run but not whether it would earn enough in the future to justify its current price. And that, as every rational investor will tell you, is key to achieving investment success.)

_Value Investing for Dummies_ assumed virtually nothing. Sure enough this meant much in the book was a review of what I had already learned from others (and might be for you too) but to my mind there's nothing wrong with relearning what is already known. (Better to do so with a book at least than with one's own money.) In assuming little-to-nothing of the reader, the authors give the reader all the tools he or she needs to invest profitably in the future.

Crucial to the dummy reader and, in this case, that means me, the book shows how to understand the _language_ of business: accounting. Since this is where the book shines, I'll pause here to allow the authors themselves a chance to explain what it is they're setting out to do. In Part 2 of the book titled "Fundamentals for Fundamentalists" the authors state their intentions as follows:

"We open the value investor toolbox by first engaging in a short exploration of investing mathematics . . . Next up is a discussion of information and information sources key to the value investor. Then, we dig in further with a tour of the financial statement landscape, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements. Ratios and ratio analysis are explored as a way to make more sense of these numbers. Finally, we help you to find and interpret non-numeric influences in the value equation."

In the next section, Part 3, the authors again state their intentions:

"We help you to assess or _appraise_ the value of a company and relate that value to the stock price. We examine some of the proven methods of business value asessment, including intrinsic value, book value, discounted cash flow, and the strategic profit formula. Then we sprinkle in a dash of intangibles (investors shouldn't live by numbers alone) and discuss buy and sell decisions. To bring these tools and techniques together into a system, we use none other than the full example of the master, Warren Buffett. Finally, to provide practice and reinforcement we present case studies of value, and for further reinforcement we resort to the age-old technique of showing opposites: examples of _un_value."

As a reader of the book, and now a reviewer, I have the duty to tell you that the authors have done exactly what they intended to do--and they have done it well. The style is such that even somewhat boring topics seem lively and the technique, as it is explained above and practiced throughout, simply can not be improved upon. The crystal-clear definitions of accounting terms and financial ratios, the detailed explanations showing what they mean and why they are important, the real-life example of Warren Buffett, and the case studies taking you all the way through the process step-by-step make this book truly the best place to start for anyone interested in investing.
