Book Description

A gripping first-hand account of life in space and the making of an astronaut.

What is it like to fly the space shuttle and work on and in the International Space Station? Veteran NASA astronaut Tom Jones is uniquely qualified to give the details: he flew four shuttle missions and helped to build the station while it was in space. From B-52 pilot during the Cold War, to a PhD in planetary science, to the unbelievable rigors of astronaut training, his career inevitably pointed him toward the space shuttle. Until the Columbia exploded.

Jones's story is the first to candidly explain the professional and personal hardships faced by the astronauts in the aftermath of the tragedy. He certainly has 'The Right Stuff' but also found himself wondering if the risks were worth it for his family. Liftoffs were especially nerve-wracking (his mother, who refuses to even get on a plane, cannot watch) but the missions in space were fascinating. Jones uses his background as a scientist to explain the practical applications of many of the shuttle's scientific missions, and describes what it's like to work with the Russian crew building and living in the space station. Stunning photographs, many taken in space, illustrate his amazing journey. 25 b/w photographs.

1 out of 5 stars Makes space flight dull and boring.......2007-04-10

Not the Right Stuff for me.
The writing is wordy, attempts to be profound and "educated" at every turn, and fails.

His single most dramatic story, the stuck hatch, is anti-climatic.

His second most dramatic story: too much air getting into the food packets.

There is very little "inside scoop" here, as NASA is portrayed as all glorious, and almost perfect. Yet we know, and see demonstrated on a regular basis, that the opposite is true.

Find this locally if you can, and browse through it first to see if its the right stuff for you.

5 out of 5 stars A memoir by one of the "new breed" of astronauts.......2007-03-01

There are many excellent books written by and about the Right Stuff astronauts who flew during the earlier days of the space program. However, until recently, there has been a nearly total lack of books by and about the shuttle astronauts who fly now. For better or worse, today's space program is as different from the program of the early days as the shuttle is different from the Apollo capsules. And today's astronauts are different, too.

Mike Mullane was the first of the shuttle astronauts to write about his experiences in his book Riding Rockets. However, Mullane was a member of the group that made the transition from the Apollo program to the shuttle program, and the tone of his book is almost wistful; he clearly wanted to be one of the Right Stuff guys-- and he means guys-- but he ended up being a shuttle technician.

Sky Walking is a memoir by a very different sort of astronaut. Tom Jones was very young during the "glory days" of the space program, so he has no Right Stuff preconceptions about astronauts as death-defying heroes. Rather, he is an Air Force Academy graduate who flew B-52s, earned a PhD in planetary sciences, and became a dedicated, professional shuttle program technician. That could have made for a dull, technical book if it weren't for his intellect and, more importantly, his powers of observation and ability to reflect on what he experienced.

Jones flew four shuttle missions and took three space walks on his final mission, which was dedicated to construction on the International Space Station. His accounts of what space walks are like-- and of the hundreds of hours of training that precedes each one-- are first rate. His descriptions of the ISS and of the issues surrounding its planning, funding, and construction are excellent. I don't know of any other insider's book that deals with the ISS in such detail or with such authority. This is because Jones was an administrator in the ISS program between his third and fourth shuttle flights.

The subtitle says that this is "an astronaut's memoir," and that's exactly what it is. Jones takes us trough his selection as an astronaut, his general training, his years of waiting for flights, his training for those flights, and the flights themselves. There is considerable technical information in the book, but Jones does an excellent job of clarifying it for non-experts. The real focus is on Jones himself-- what he sees, thinks, and feels about what's happening to him.

This is an outstanding book. It answers the two basic questions many of us have always had: "What's it REALLY like to fly in space?" and "What are those people REALLY like?" I thoroughly enjoyed Sky Walking, and I recommend it most highly.

5 out of 5 stars The Next Best Thing to Traveling to Space Yourself.......2006-12-19

Sky Walking is the best account of the experience of space that I have ever read. It takes you deep into the physical and emotional sensations of space travel where you the reader experience what astronauts experience right down to the mundane task trying to locate an item that has floated away in the cabin or trying to use an exercise bike with zero gravity. Tom Jones is an articulate writer capable of constructing wonderful imagery and some choice metaphors about every aspect of space travel from training to launch to rentry. His descriptions of his space walks and working aboard the International Space Station are particularly memorable. Jones is also not afraid to render an opinion about this America's commitment to space what can and should be done to maintain NASA as a shining symbol of American capability. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a curiosity about what space travel is really like.

5 out of 5 stars Sky Walking Reaches High on Many Accounts.......2006-12-17

This is a highly readable and expertly written account by Tom Jones about his astronaut career.
He writes from his heart, and has clearly thought a lot about how to effectively communicate his experiences.
His use of imagery puts this book in the realm of literature, though it is definitely non-fiction.
A must for your Christmas list if you are or once were an aspiring astronaut, an aspiring writer of topics related to space and technology or just interested in knowing what it is like up there. It is a great read; I laughed, I cried, learned something about space, space policy and history, and was amazed by it all!

5 out of 5 stars Another great astronaut biography.......2006-12-16

"Sky Walking" is the second space shuttle astronaut biography I have read after Mike Mullane's "Riding Rockets". I enjoyed both books a lot but they are very different in style. Mike Mullane's book concentrates mostly on humorous anecdotes from his astronaut career (although there are serious parts) whereas Tom Jones has more of the detail involved in astronaut training and I would have to say that if you want to know the fine details about being an astronaut, get this book. I haven't seen anything better in this regard.

Tom Jones started his astronaut career in 1990, just about the time when Mike Mullane was winding down (he was in the 1978 astronaut class) so the two books cover virtually the whole Space Shuttle era. Tom eventually flew four missions, the last being the outfitting of the Destiny laboratory on ISS in 2001. As the title suggests, there is a lot about space walking but Tom didn't get to do any until the last mission. He was scheduled to do a spacewalk on STS-80 but, as described in the first chapter, the airlock wouldn't open.

The book is simply packed with detail on mission training and the space walk training in the NASA WETF and NBL training facilities is described so well that your body almost starts to ache in sympathy. Being an astronaut is definitely not an easy job. As you would expect, there are numerous anecdotes throughout, one of my favourites being Story Musgrave staying on the Shuttle flight deck during the STS-80 re-entry so he could video it. Certainly a man with the right stuff.

If you just want to get an overview of astronaut training rather than the full detail I would probably recommend Mike Mullane's book ahead of this one. There isn't as much humor in "Sky Walking" either but it's still worth five stars.

No sport reveres its past quite the way baseball does, and no sport has mined the richness of its oral tradition quite the way baseball has. Picking up where Lawrence Ritter left off in the marvelous classic The Glory of Their Times, Honig set out across the country with a tape recorder to preserve the voices--and memories--of the men who played the game between the two World Wars. This is a wonderful and essential collection, full of bravado, pride, and passion for the game, with a lineup that includes Bob Feller, Lefty Grove, Johnny Mize, Charlie Gehringer, and Pete Reiser. You don't so much read it as put your ear to it, as it alternately whispers and roars.

Just listen to Hall of Fame hurler Wes Farrell, in the midst of explaining the art of the knockdown pitch, segue into what it was like to face Babe Ruth, just one of the volume's hundreds of remarkable moments: "I never threw at Ruth, though. You just didn't do that. He was baseball. What was it like pitching to him? Like looking into a lion's jaw, that's what. Hell, man, you're pitching to a legend! And you knew, too, that if he hits a home run, he's gonna get cheers, and if he strikes out, he's still gonna get the cheers. You were nothing when Ruth came up."

Nicely illustrated with vintage action and portrait photos, Baseball When the Grass Was Real gives a fine face to its voices, but long after the cheering's stopped, it's the voices that remain memorable. By preserving them as fully as he has, Honig's provided a virtual vehicle for traveling through time and eavesdropping on history. --Jeff Silverman

Book Description

Donald Honig crossed the country to meet and interview former big-league ball players. They shared their memories with him and the result is a book packed with nostalgia, statistics, action, revelations—an extraordinary oral history of baseball in the halcyon days beween the two world wars. Babe Ruth, Lefty Grove, Ted Williams, Bob Feller, Dizzy Dean, Jackie Robinson, Lou Gehrig, and many others are brought to life through the recollections of Wes Ferrell, Charlie Gehringer, Elbie Fletcher, Bucky Waters, Billy Herman, Cool Papa Bell, Spud Chandler, Pete Reiser, and a host of others. Those were the days when the grass was real, salaries were modest, Bob Feller was America's most famous seventeen-year-old, and idealism was in full swing. "Baseball builds your pride," said pitcher Wes Ferrell, who played it in order "to be a better guy."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Eloquent Oral History.......2007-04-14

In the mid-1970's author Donald Honig traveled the USA with his tape recorder and let 18 ex-ballplayers tell their stories. The result is a superbly readable oral history of baseball from the 1920's-1940's. Each ex-player does his part, coming through with moving memories that inspire and illuminate. We hear from Bob Feller, Charlie Gehringer, Billy Herman, Ted Lyons, Lefty Grove, John Mize, Spud Chandler, and many others. Each man is blessed with certain eloquence as he describes his upbringing, his start in baseball, and his years on the field. I particularly enjoyed Bob Feller describing his pitching technique, Cool Papa Bell's recall of barnstorming with Negro League squads, and Pete Reiser's initial years in the show. But many other tales are just as good, and the pages never drag. A few older readers may recall some of the events described here. The rest of us get a feel for baseball in the pre-television era when the parks were smaller, the crowds lighter, the nation poorer, and the grass real.

Sadly, at this writing only Bob Feller and Max Lanier remain, but the memory of each player survives in these eloquent pages. Readers might also enjoy THE GLORY OF THEIR TIMES, an earlier oral history from author Lawrence Ritter.

5 out of 5 stars The Wonderful Stories of Baseball.......2006-01-22

If Lawrence Ritter's "The Glory Of Their Times" is number one in the list of oral histories of baseball, then Donald Honig's "Baseball When the Grass Was Real: Baseball from the Twenties to the Forties Told by the Men Who Played It" ranks a close second. True to Ritter's form in interviewing and editing the tapes for an oral history of baseball by those who played it, Honig does a great job of having the players tell of their time in baseball, the stories of what it was like in the majors and the history - the time that they played. Everyday life and the public perception of ball players had changed between the time Ritter's interviewees played in the majors and Honig's group had played, the difference being interesting in itself. Honig's subjects tell of a time that is still remarkably different from ours by a group that also is rapidly diminishing, victims of old age. The book is a remarkable slice of history, definitely worth the time and money to read for anyone who is interested in baseball and history.

5 out of 5 stars Picks right up where Lawrence Ritter left off.......2005-06-04

Donald Honig has created a gem for baseball fans who appreciate the players and the game of the 20's through the 40's. Even the not-so-avid fan will recognize many of the stars featured in Honig's book. This list includes Bob Feller, Lefty Grove, Charlie Gehringer, Johnny Mize, Wes Ferrell & Ted Lyons just to name a few.

As good as the stories are that the "stars" tell, it's the other players who relate the best tales. In particular, Billy Herman's tale about his night as Ernest Hemingway's dinner guest is almost worth the price of the book alone. Cool Papa Bell's stories of his experiences in the Negro Leagues and "barnstorming" against Major League players are priceless. Rip Sewell's explanation of how he began to throw his "Eephus pitch" is one of the few times that I've seen in print.

If you enjoyed Lawrence Ritter's, "The Glory of Their Times", a book about baseball's very early players, then you will love Honig's book. These two works are worth a place in every baseball fan's collection!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

4 out of 5 stars A GOOD READ.......2003-02-24

THIS IS ANOTHER GOOD BOOK BY DONALD HONIG. THIS IS ABOUT THE MEN WHO PLAYED IN THE 20'S 30'S AND 40'S. SOME GREAT STORIES AND INTERVIEWS ARE WHAT YOU GET IN THIS MUST READ BOOK. WISH IT HAD MORE BUT WELL WORTH READING FOR ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED ABOUT BASEBALL WHEN THE GRAS REALLY WAS REAL. VERY RECOMMENDED.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for all who loved "The Glory of Their Times".......1999-03-06

If you loved Larry Ritter's "The Glory of Their Times," then you definitely should read this one. It follows the same format and lets some of baseball's greats (and not quite so greats) from the 20s and 40s tell it like it was. It'll make you yearn for the good ol' days of Ruth, Gehrig, and Foxx.

This is a satisfying, well reasearched, and enlightening look into the real truths behind famed comic and Ziegfield star Fanny Brice. With harsh facts yet obvious respect for her subject author Barbara W. Grossman peels away the myths propagated by the Streisand films and gets to the facts and the core of the real Fanny Brice. This is a very entertaining biography and may also be used as a great tool to research the early days of Vaudeville, Burlesque, and the Ziegfield Follies.

The phrases “hip hop” and “activism” aren’t always heard together, but it’s a marriage that must be made if black empowerment is to succeed. In Stand and Deliver, Bynoe eloquently advocates replacing charismatic but ineffectual black leaders who beg for crumbs from the white power structure with “citizen-leaders” who actively engage in a policy-centered relationship with that structure. Bynoe shows how hip hoppers can create a more sophisticated dialogue about what constitutes leadership, politics, and political action. This understanding, she argues, comes from influence, and influence comes from the ability to deliver — or deny — money, votes, or both to a political candidate, legislator, or political party. In the words of MC Lyte, all the rest is “chitter chatter.”

5 out of 5 stars Hip Hop vs. Old School?.......2004-07-26

It is probably obvious to any thinking Black American that the movement toward an equitable society is lacking in leadership today. The old school civil rights leaders are not connecting with the Hip Hop generation and the Hip Hop generation does not relate to where the civil rights leaders from the sixties and seventies are coming from. Yvonne Bynoe explores the reasons for this disconnect in the Black community. Her book, STAND AND DELIVER, is rich with the history of the civil rights era and also delves deeply into the psyche of the Hip Hop generation. She is equitable in placing responsibility for shortcomings from both generations where they belong and gives credit where it should be given. Bynoe thoughtfully explores the history and the reasoning behind each generation and gives reasonable explanations about why people do the things they do.

What makes her book an outstanding read is that she doesn't just ask the questions; she also provides reasonable solutions and outlines exactly how activism can once more be a part of the Black community. She gives concrete suggestions for the questions the Hip Hop generation must ask, such as how do we make America an equitable society. She even gives information on how to disagree without destroying a movement. In addition, she reminds those from other generations that they must come to the Hip Hop generation as equals, not with a snobbish attitude that suggests that they know without a shadow of a doubt, how to solve the problem of inequality in America. Bynoe also reminds us that in the new century, we can no longer exclude people from the movement because of race, class, or economic condition but we must find a common ground to insure that all Americans have an equal chance to be the best that they can. I frequently found myself nodding in agreement as I read her words. She is a voice to be reckoned with.

This is an excellent and timely book! Ms. Bynoe provides new and important insights about how we should critique and engage political leaders and activists. She is truly an independent thinker who is more interested in people improving their communities than in them propping up ineffectual Black leaders, young or old----based on out-dated rules about party or race unity. Her thoughts about Hip Hop activism are on the money. It is time that the Hip Hop generation move beyond the rhetoric of political activism to actually implementing the tried and true, long-term organizing and mobilizing strategies that actually helped us to make progress years ago. Registration drives without plans to get folks to the polls are not effective! People who talk about problems but who have no solid plans to solve them are irrelevant! Read "Stand and Deliver," Yvonne Bynoe is definitely a new and important voice that we should pay heed to.

Steve Bergsman (Mesa, AZ) is a nationally recognized financial and real estate writer. For the past 20 years he has been a contributor to many leading publications and regularly writes the "Ground Floor" real estate column in Barron's.

2 out of 5 stars Not about RE investing strategies; also not biographies of great RE investors.......2007-01-31

I am disappointed about this book. As many reviewers have pointed out, this book, unlike its subtitle suggests, is not really about strategies of RE investing. Many said this book is more like biographies of great RE investors, but I find it difficult to agree as its analysis (or, even chronicle) on each "maverick" is always skin-deep.

What this book serves to me is that it tells me "there are such successful RE investors in the world as Zell, Shorenstein, Reichmann, and if you want to know more about them, you better look for a better biography in the library (and I am not going to tell you which one is good or where you can find one.)"

4 out of 5 stars Yeah, a good introductory book of sorts, but certainly not as in-depth as I wanted it to be..........2007-01-27

Author Steve Bergsman does a good job here of introducing the various players on the big property, and even bigger money scene in his first book, MAVERICK REAL ESTATE INVESTING.

For those who have not intimately studied the business affairs and strategies of Trump, Lowy, Shorenstein, Hines, Zell, Simon, et. al., this is as good a 'round-the-horn effort as it gets in getting to know each of them just a wee bit better.

My opinion? If you're anything like me, you'll blow through these chapters like a whirlwind, grabbing a nugget or two here or there. Its content will--at the end of the day--stick firmly in your mind, and you'll eventually find yourself thinking of it at the seemingly oddest times.

Better. If anything, reading MAVERICK REAL ESTATE INVESTING will doubtless instigate further curiosity, and for at least certain of the source materials Bergsman suggests in his rather meticulous follow-up notes.

If you read through from cover to cover, you'll realize there's a fair bit of continuity you can come to expect from Bergsman's style. He tends to reiterate the salient themes and terms for clarity and familiarity, though the paucity of background information--for instance, HOW did Paul Reichmann acquire that property in question?, or WHY did Fred Lowy decide to purchase that shopping mall in Connecticut?--will send you scampering back to the public library or to the megabookstore in search of a proper biography (should one exist) on that very subject.

I found myself in this particular state of thinking on at least a few times during my readthrough.

In Mr. Bergsman's defence, I suppose he was somewhat limited by what his subjects under the microscope permitted him to publish here in these short--but sweet--chapters. To be sure, I'm positive he had his hands tied when discussing the specifics of certain deals, therefore the details are a bit sketchy. As readers, we're more than a little understanding. We deftly between the lines...

I suppose in the case of books like these, you won't find everything to your liking.

Sure, novices to the real estate/property trade might enjoy the rather simplified breakdown of various terminologies and techniques--universtity course "101"-style--but will probably gain a massive amount of inspiration as a result. Others more well-versed in these areas will perhaps gravitate more towards those bite-sized quotables straight from the mouths of powerful magnates like Trump. Still others may cherry pick a few sage pointers from Bergsman's handy "summary points" ending each chapter, what you'd find in most MBA-level textbooks. It's a good review of what you've just learned. It's even a nice "skimming device" for those with less time to devote to full-on coverage. Derive insights from a particular chapter or two, then discard the rest. Who's to say?

Read it and see how it strikes you. I guarantee you won't gain all the inspirations the book's juicy title seems to suggest, but you *will* use it as a departure point.

Perhaps nothing more convincing than raw experience actually matters in the final analysis. You've got to spend the time making mistakes, going through the motions, and figuring out the optimal approaches for getting things done in your area of expertise.

Like any other industry segment, spend at least ten years practicing it until you REALLY know the ins and outs of how it functions. The book teaches more than anything that there's no better teacher than the school of hard knocks.

He who knows how to box--not fight--is the ultimate winner in the end.

All in all, a four star read. It's a title worth having on your bookshelf. Once you become successful, you'll look back fondly upon it for what it gave you, a long time ago.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good blueprint on RE investing.......2006-02-01

This book doesn't get heavy in the real details of exactly how these deals are done. It's a little broad, but I will say that it helps any investor see how multi million dollar office building deals are made accross the country. It will outline what these tycoons and most are billionaires do in different cycles of the markets..... bottom line they buy in distress cheaply, improve net operating incomes and position these properties to generate millions of dollars in profits....... It's good info for knowing how to handle down markets, how much of an equity position to sustain, and also what it takes to put deals together with syndications..... If you want to get big in commercial real estate its worth the money and time to read it..... if you want to flip or hold a small portfolio of single family homes or apartment complexes don't waste your time with this book read the many others that are published for the smaller investor. 3 out of 5 stars Worth the Read.......2005-03-07

This book is apparently meant to serve as a "biography" of the real estate decisions made by a loosely-defined group of men (mostly) who made a lot of money in real estate. I doubt that--despite the subtitle--the book was meant to replace an MBA education with an emphasis on real estate. So, perhaps much of the criticism by my fellow reviewers is a bit unjustified.

The book is interesting to read in most places. However, because the author does not stick to the intended formula of examining one maverick at a time, but instead jumps from maverick to maverick, the book's flow isn't perfect. But then again, even mavericks aren't perfect! If you goal is to learn about real estate techniques, this isn't a good place to start. If you'd like to learn more about the people in real estate, this is good starting point.

5 out of 5 stars Great Insight into Real Estate Investing ..........2004-12-15

Bergsman's book provides a great "behind the scenes" look at some of the biggest names in Real Estate in this country and how they succeeded (and failed) based on how they crafted their deals. While not all of us will be (or want to be) Donald Trump et al, one can't help but appreciate reading how each got started, their principles of doing business, and their unique philosophies when it comes to investing in Real Estate. I found many of their strategies very relevant - whether one invests in a single condo or large multi-unit apartment complexes. The book is easy to read, worth reading .... and full of valuable tips and insights to the world of real estate investing - large and small.
