When I first started reading this book I had a tough time putting it down. It takes us back to Tigers early golf days right up to the winning of his first Masters Tournament in record numbers. Tim Rosaforte really makes this book come alive. You will not be disappointed in this one.
A CHAMPION RISES.......2002-07-18
At age twenty-one, Eldrick "Tiger" Woods became the youngest individual to win the Masters Tournament. This young phenomena ushered in a new age for golf and sports fans all over wanted to know, who is this rising champion? Sports writer Tim Rosaforte provides that answer by penning one of the first biographies of Tiger.
Does a young man of twenty years of age deserve a 70,000 word biography is the question Rosaforte raises. His answer is a resounding yes as he presents before the phenomenal rise of golf's greatest champion of all time. He tracks the early career of Woods from his Junior Golf years all the way up to his 1997 victory at the Masters. Through his journalism you get a comprehensive overview of his career.
Rosaforte divides his book into three sections which entail a biographical sketch of Woods' parents and their impact on him. His second section is devoted to his wins in junior golf, high school and college. Finally we deal with Tiger coming out on his own by turning professional. As one of the first biographical books on Woods, the author does a decent job in giving us insight on this remarkable golfer.
I would caution readers to not look at this book as the "definitive" work about Woods. Rosaforte admits that he didn't have the help of the Woods family in compiling his work. In many instances the author's voice takes on a self-serving attitude as if his writing is responsible for taking Woods to greater heights. Although he shares with us little known facts about Woods such as his mugging at Stanford and problems with the NCAA regarding his eligibility, we are left without a clue about the young man himself. His golf achievements and statistical records are reported but what is absent is the inner life of Woods and little interpretation as to his importance for golf's future years. Perhaps Tiger and his family were wise not to work with the reporter.
Regardless of those faults Rosaforte's book is worth having in terms of getting some insight about Woods as a champion golfer. In this area the author does a great service but as a biographer he falls short of the task. Obtain this book as a collector's item on one of Golf's finest players.
A Very Well Written Book.......2001-02-22
Although the story dragged in the beginning, I found the book Tiger Woods The Makings Of A Champion very interesting and entertaining. It was also a very well written book. It struck me with awe when I read that Tiger started swinging a golf club at 10 months. The book also shows people how hard Tiger's childhood was. That he couldn't even play at some golf courses because he was black. It showed how great a golfer Tiger Woods is, and how he could possibly be the player of the future.
Insights into Pre-Dominant Tiger.......2001-02-01
Rosaforte is one of the very astute watchers and commentators on the PGA Tour. He admits here that much is rehash of publicity we've all heard over and over. Yet, he places it into the context of what has and was going on inside Tiger's family and circle during his transition from college player to pro.
I found this valuable towards how one views this amazing talent, especially his views of parents and how his fellow competitors accepted him from the start. The personal insights here are well worth the read. We all now know what Tiger did about fulfilling some of the potential spoken of here prophetically.
His continued climb into golf's greatness will be more easily framed and understood with this foundational look.
Should have been called resitation of quotes.......2000-08-31
Although I found this book decent reading, it was to heavily dependant on reprinting quotes that Tiger had already said throughout his young career. At points it seemed that the author had an ax to grind, in the way situations were presented.

Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer in the world, (in my opinion anyway, I really don't care what other people think). I am the biggest beyond biggest fan of Tiger woods (just ask anyone, they all know!) Tiger Woods is more than a world class champion, he is the best, and I would give anything to meet him! HIS BEGINNING.......2002-07-06
Sports Illustrated put together a collection of some of its articles chronicling the rise of Tiger Woods from the years 1992 through 1996. Writers such as James Garrity, Jaime Diaz, Tim Rosafore, Rick Reilly, William Reed, and Gary Sickle share their special insight on this young golf phenomena. Everyone has their say in this three act drama.
Act I is aptly titled The Kid. Here we are given a snapshot of the young Tiger learning his trade while moving up in the ranks of golf history. Act II concerns itself with the young man on the rise as an Amateur. The reporting tracks his comebacks, successes and the never ending question of when he will turn pro. Act III, The Pro, introduces us to a new Tiger. Tiger has moved beyond his peers on the amateur circuit and now has debuted as a professional. How he does and what he will do in the future is yet to come as we read the articles concerning his progress.
This is a good picture book. If you want to start a conversation about Tiger Woods and his rise to golf fame, this is a fair start. The articles aren't all that exciting unless you love to hear the same old jargon and statistics about Tiger, time and time again. The book's photography is good and enjoyable. Sports Illustrated threw together a picture book of a rising star. The magazine could have done better but what you have is decent coffee table reading.

Gotta Go, There's a Sale at the Mall.......2005-08-28
In Point of Purchase, author Sharon Zukin explores why we shop and how it affects us, individually and as a society. She looks at the history of shopping, from a brief look at ancient Roman olive oil shops in Pompeii to a more elaborate history of department stores in New York. All that is interesting, but I found the sections on current shopping the most intriguing.
Zukin explores superstores and warehouse stores, then moves on to internet shopping. She discusses Amazon.com and eBay, even examining the merits of allowing customers to review the products for sale. It seems all reviews are good for sales, even negative reviews, since anything that keeps you on the site yields more sales.
One of the most gripping sections of Point of Purchase is the interview with a young Hispanic New Yorker who describes his venture into Tiffany's to buy his girlfriend an expensive gift. The interactions between him and the security guards, the sales clerks, the other customers, as well as the way he tells his story and the way the interviewer retells it are material for an entire article or book itself.

New in paperwork is an excellent social history, Sharon Zukin's Point Of Purchase: How Shopping Changed American Culture. Zukon is Broeklundian Professor of sociology at Brooklyn college and City University of New York: her background in cities and culture lends well to an analysis of shopping as the American dream ideal, tracing the history of American shopping from mid-19th century to modern shopping trends. A fascinating social history evolves.

A good and readable book on Corporate Finance.......2005-09-20
"Fundamentals of Corporate Finance" is a recommended textbook of finance which is simple to read and follow. I am a Senior Engineering manager and wanted to have a good grasp of financial principles and concepts. I found the book to be very user friendly. As I go up the corporate ladder, I need a good grasp of financial concepts and their practical implementation in the real corporate world. This book provided me with most the information I needed.
The book will enable the reader to use the theory underlying corporate financial decisions to assess advanced corporate issues and decisions. The major topics covered in the book include financial statements, valuation of cash flows, capital structure and budgeting, risk and return, use of debt and equity, cash and credit management and international corporate finance, among other topics.
The book has a wide range of learning tools that should facilitate the learning process. Reference to several website reinforces the concepts being presented in the book. Whether one is a student wishing to learn the important subject of finance or a manager wishing to manage the company finances more effectively, this is a good choice of book.
The only limitation I found in the book is its main focus on US systems only with few examples on what is happening in Europe and elsewhere. To learn about the City Institutions (London) or European Stock Exchanges, for example, you have to search for your information elsewhere. Notwithstanding this, I enjoyed reading the book, particularly self-assessing my understanding by attempting the exercises in the CD-ROM which comes with the book.

Wow! Great! Excellent! Amazing etc.., the list can continue.This is one book that any starter in finance area will want to learn from. Its a power-packed source of information for any student who is just starting to learn finance, however if you are already a pro in finance, then don't even considering this book because you'll finish reading the entire book in a couple of weeks.
I used this book for my exams preparation along with brealey myers text and the combination simply pushed my rank into the outstanding bracket.
This book is particularly useful for the following chapters:
5. Introductio to valuation: time value of money
6. Discounted cash flow - Interesting chapter opening
7. Interest Rates and Bond Valuation - Great Derivations
8. Stock Valuation - Once again great derivation on formula's
9-11: Capital budgeting - will be useful to only absolute starters. I liked the material in Brealey Myers text, it is more advanced
12. Some lessons from corporate market history
13. Return,Risk and Security Market Line
15. Cost of Capital
19-21: Short Term Finance - Best coverage, though not complete in all respects.
Finally one honest note, I didn't know how to produce PV/FV/Annuity tables by myself before I bought this book. Now I able to produce them all by myself.
I you want to dig deeper in finance, just like I am doing, then I suggest you buy this book and principles of corporate finance by brealey myers.This book will provide you with the base that is needed to cover the other book that I mentioned.

Fundamentals of Corporate Finance (FCF) is written with one strongly held principle– that corporate finance should be developed and taught in terms of a few integrated, powerful ideas.
