4 out of 5 stars How many people who "trash" Diana, did anything to help anyo.......2001-08-27

I get so tired of hearing people "trash" a woman who (although she made her share of mistakes--like everyone else),did so many things that brought joy and happiness to the lives of so many people--usually the less fortunate.. Sure, she was a Princess, and wealthy and famous, but she also lived a life full of pain. Money and fame cannot take away the pain other people caused her. She was thrown into a lifestyle and a family who did very little to help her. She wanted to learn! No one wanted to bother to teach her. Just throw her to the wolves...She did very well, despite all of the troubles she had to deal with in her own life. She tried to put her unhappiness aside to help others. How many people do that in the world we Live In today. All people seem to care about is themselves. Frankly, even though Diana made mistakes, she also tried very hard to deal with her problems, while helping others with theirs. And she couldn't have possibly been a better mother to her children. She just wanted and needed love, like everyone else in the world! I am very proud that I knew a woman who did as much to help others, as Diana did. Anyone who wants to "knock" her, should try living the life she had to live and see how well they do!!!

4 out of 5 stars A polite review.......2000-11-13

I felt the author attempted to shed new insight on a beautiful woman who died far too early in her short life. Prince Charles said it best once...he felt that in time she would have come back to him, possibly very ill, and he would have taken care of her. I do believe, in spite of what he had told the press in his famous BBC interview, that he did love her. She was the mother of their boys.

4 out of 5 stars A worthy effort.......2000-09-12

A good book about the lovely and wonderful Diana though perhaps not the best I've ever read. Still, those of us who truly loved and admired this wonderful woman will want to read it.

To the "Reader From Oxford England" whose nasty review appeared above: Why bother to share your vapid and meaningless thoughts? My suggestion for you is to go and find other Diana-bashers, such as that two-faced Robert Fellowes, and have a great big BLOW-FEST with one another!!

2 out of 5 stars Better than his earlier book about Diana.......2000-01-17

This book seems to be either an attempt to just make money from Diana's death, or perhaps a belated apology for the trash he had written about Diana in his earlier book. This book is more sympathetic to Diana, but not as extensive in the biographical coverage of Diana's life, mostly about the last days of her life.

1 out of 5 stars A good emetic.......1999-09-03

This glutinous tribute to England's Great Whore and Traitoress made me want to spew.

4 out of 5 stars Good for Freshman Composition.......2007-03-02

I'm using it with my students this semester and it appears to be a hit. Of course, some students who are loathe to engage in critical thinking will find this book useless, but for those who enjoy thinking, analyzing, and questioning, this book serves as a good segueway into deeper critical analyses. This book features readings on pop culture ranging from relatively easy-to-read articles to selections from academic articles from scholarly journals. As a result, many students are faced with difficult and complex readings, often for the first time. By focusing on critical analysis, with this text in the guise of questioning the function of pop culture, students develop their analytical skills and refrain from being passive. Thus, they're encouraged to be active and engaged with their environment. I much prefer a reader in the composition classroom instead of the boring, "how-to" compositions. For the actual writing, I make my own handouts and assignments (individual, small group, and large group), and conduct in-class writing conferences. If a professor isn't willing to do the extra work needed in order to show and model solid collegiate writing, then this book, perhaps, isn't for him or her. But if a professor likes depth to the composition classroom and likes to encourage critical thinking in the students, then this book may be for him or her.

      1 out of 5 stars English??.......2002-02-12

I had to have this book for an english class. its just a bunch of articles that were selected, yet we didn't use them. I think that there are better ways to do something like this

4 out of 5 stars wide ranging and entertaining.......2001-05-24

it's good to find perceptive analyses of aspects of culture we otherwise take for granted treated with both the humor and curiosity they deserve. the scope of this book will help dispel any jaded stare your eyes might have acquired in seeing life grow increasingly routine. as anthropologists are finding westernization leaving scarcer indigenous pickings, we can be happy cultural studies questioning some of the modes becoming more "common".

Maxwell takes the reader through a series of steps to learn and grow from the mistakes, adversity, and failures in our lives. Much of leadership development centers on professional skills, Maxwell helps the reader focus on the personal side of failures, and how failures are defining moments in our lives that either take us forward, or take us backward. The book contains many stories of successful leaders including their failures and the lessons they parlayed into success in business and life. Having experienced a series of personal failures in my own life, the book resonates with me in terms of what I have learned from those mistakes. Affirming.

While *I* believe I discovered John Maxwell too late in life, hearing Mr. Maxwell live made me think differently. He says "if you think you believe that you heard this material too late, you are wrong. In the past you weren't ready to listen. God's timing is perfect." While humbling, I know he is right. So give a listen, the time is right.

The author of 24 books on maximizing personal and leadership potential, John C. Maxwell believes "the difference between average people and achieving people is their perception of and response to failure." In Failing Forward, he offers inspirational advice for turning the difficulties that inevitably arise in life into stepping stones that help you reach the top. Noting that star performers are often those who aggressively push forward after encountering adversity, Maxwell shows how a variety of well-known and not-so-well-known people have forged ahead despite obstacles that could have derailed them. They include: Mary Kay Ash, who founded her cosmetics firm against enormous odds when the direct-sales company she toiled in for 25 years resisted her continued corporate climb; Truett Cathy, who lost two brothers (and business partners) in an airplane crash and experienced his own serious medical problems before establishing the Chick-fil-A fast-food chain; Greg Horn, who reopened his Kentucky grocery store just 21 days after it suffered $1 million in flood damage; and Beck Weathers, who lost his nose, half of one arm, and the fingers on his other in the infamous 1996 Into Thin Air Mt. Everest tragedy, but now takes a positive message of survival and conquest to audiences around the world. --Howard Rothman

Mr Maxwell is nothing if not prolific in writing about leadership. This book is arguably one of his most important, not for what it says about leadership, but rather one of the most critical culture setting behaviors a leader can practice. How do we turn a mistake into a learning opportunity rather than a failure doomed to be repeated. I liked this book for its step by step approach to addressing mistakes and turning them into positive learning outcomes. this is a typical Maxwell effort lots of quotes and easy reading with a simple formula.

This is a must read for those of us who like to beat ourselves up for our last mistake.

And remember: Forgive yourself for making a mistake, get over it and learn from it!

          3 out of 5 stars Typical .......2007-07-11

This was an ok book but it got to be the same thing that you may have read else where in motivational books. Some have said this is the same as others of his.

5 out of 5 stars Whoa! Failing is actually good for you?.......2007-06-24

When I saw this book at the bookstore, I just had to pick it up and it didn't disappoint. I believe the reason I am not where I want to be is because I was afraid of failing and making a fool of myself. This book teaches I never will get where I want to go unless I fail along the way! Make no mistake, this is not about accepting, expecting, or dealing failure but learning and growing from it. It's OK to fall once in a while just don't stay down. That's the theme here. In Chapter 13, I loved the short letter in the story about the mother who wrote to her daughter the following words when the daughter wanted to return home because she was lonely:

"Two men looked from prison bars, One saw mud, the other stars."

Simple yet the message is clear. Which one would you rather focus on?

          5 out of 5 stars Life-changing Revelation.......2007-05-14

This book changed my work life (and my personal life too). I love it and recommend it to anyone who will listen. Is failure your stumbling block or your stepping stone?
Stumbling blocks lead to repeated poor performance and a cycle of fear, anxiety and more failure. Stepping stones lead to better performance, and a cycle of confidence, growth and success.
I never knew my view of failure was keeping me in a life of mediocrity. I thought it was beyond my control but ... everyone fails, including me --and failure isn't final, really it isn't and that in itself is life-changing.

          5 out of 5 stars Practical .......2007-03-27

This is a practitioner's book. It shows that failure is inevitable but a good failure is one that moves an organization forward. Maxwell is known for his business books on many leadership topic; and while this one is not focused on leadership, it can be seen as a leader's MGT 101 when failure occurs. It is a good book.

This book gives specific stories about people and how they bounced back from failure. It definately can help put your own trials into perspective. But it also gives practical advice on how to proceed from your failures. If we dont really learn how to learn from our failures, then we are setting ourselves up for more failures. This book will help clear up alot of mis conceptions regarding failure and success.
