Book Description
Originally published in 1897, this personal look at Queen Victoria by a member of her household staff is described by the author: "I leave to others to depict the incidents in a reign as grand in war, as glorious in peace, and as golden in art, literature, and science, as that of either Her Majesty's predecessors, Queen Elizabeth or Queen Anne. My concern is merely with the petty personal details of the greatest woman of her time, who, when as a small child of twelve she first heard of her proximity to the throne, merely held out her little hand, and said, 'I will be good!'"

One the best writers on baseball in any lineup, Jordan arrived at his typewriter with first-hand experience: his Major League dreams were snuffed out in the low minors by an arm and an attitude that were less than dazzling. A False Spring, his classic account of his youthful experiences--and indiscretions--on the mound, remains a cornerstone of any good baseball library. A Nice Tuesday picks up the Jordan saga some three decades later. It is more than a complement to the earlier memoir, it's a perfect fit.
Well past the prime he never had, Jordan, at 56, realizes he still can't shake the game or the way the failure of not making it continues to haunt him. Setting out to confront his past, he tries stepping back into it, detailing moment by moment the excruciating process of struggling into shape for his shot to pitch a minor league game with the Waterbury Saints. At the same time, he also describes with painful precision what it takes to repair old wounds within the family. That both processes lead to a sense of peace with who he is and the journey his life has taken is the kind of stat that stands up favorably to any win-loss record.
Jordan is a powerful writer, his prose riding carefully controlled waves of muscularity, tenderness, understanding, and insight. Sports may be his arena here, but metaphysics is his game. "In our late fifties," he writes of himself and his wife, "we lived our lives in a Twilight Zone. We were both young and old. With one hand we held on to our fading youth, bikini thongs and pitching baseballs.... We both knew that the days of our youth were closing fast." What Jordan makes clear throughout A Nice Tuesday is that hearing the footsteps of time approaching isn't tantamount to being overtaken by them. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
A baseball prodigy since the age of ten, Pat Jordan had been interviewed on television and written about in newspapers at an early age. Signed as a pitcher by the Milwaukee Braves upon his graduation from high school, he believed his success would continue for years to come. But after three diminishing seasons in the minor leagues, he was cut from the roster and began painfully constructing a new life. In the wreckage of his baseball career, Jordan found new success as a writer. In 1975, he published his classic memoir, A False Spring, which Sports Illustrated hailed as "one of the fifteen sports books everyone says you must have." But his past and early promise still tugged at him. So, at age fifty-six, Jordan decided to pitch again.
A Nice Tuesday chronicles Jordan's decision to return to the mound, his struggle to get back into shape, and his ultimately successful quest to pitch for the Waterbury (Connecticut) Spirit-despite the aches and pains of middle age, his fear of not being taken seriously, and his own quixotic sense of enterprise.
Capturing the magic and wonder of sport as well as the painful process of self-discovery, A Nice Tuesday is a stirring and poignant study of a man reaching into his past and trying to rewrite the biggest failure of his life. In coming to terms with the lost dreams of his youth, Jordan finally arrives at peace with his past and with himself, and in doing so, he has created a book destined to become a classic.
Customer Reviews:
ALWAYS COLORFUL.......2006-12-20
I bought this book because I enjoyed a False Spring many years ago. I was truly not disappointed. Pat Jordan is so honest that it doesn't matter whether you are reading his books as a sports fan or not, you become interested in his life. Unusual events happenn to him and he writes about them unusually well.
Honest and direct..........2004-03-19
I don't think I can add much to the praise bestowed upon this book by the previous reviewers, other than to mention two things I found special about this memoir (come on Amazon proofreaders, get it right!).
1. I found the book an incredibly interesting portrait of a man that is eerily DISsimilar to myself, yet I could relate and empathise with his life and dreams.
2. Chapter Three, which is a self-deprecating look at a typical day in the life of a man "...rooted in his routine." is one of the best individual chapters of any book I have read recently. He describes an unremarkable S. Florida day with such clarity and humor that I found myself thinking as I read, "yeah, and then what did you do?"
I am moving on to A False Spring with anticipation...
Better Than Any Baseball Book.......2003-11-08
This book is not about baseball, and it is not a sequel to "A False Spring," which was a classic in its own right. It is also not about dogs, cigars, fast cars or South Florida, although all of those things figure prominently in the book. Instead, "A Nice Tuesday" is a deeper, fuller portrait of an unusually talented guy living out his life as best he can despite a nagging feeling that he has failed.
That may not sound particularly interesting, but Pat Jordan himself is a far better subject than 99% of the atheletes he usually writes about. He is an intelligent guy, with a wide range of interests. His writing captures that struggle we all go through of being able to perceive our shortcomings and only have limited success trying to change them. But, at least he does try. In this book, he's completely unafraid to reveal himself through his writing.
Beyond this, Jordan is a very skilled writer. He has a great sense of judgment as to what will capture and keep the reader's attention. He doesn't abuse this gift by lingering on his stories too long. There are dozens of memorable scenes and vignettes in this book, but it does not come off as being choppy or disorganized. The connections make sense to Jordan, and he convinces the reader that they should make sense.
Although this is non-fiction, the book "A Nice Tuesday" resembles most closely is "The World According to Garp" by John Irving. I mean that as a compliment; Garp is one of my favorite books of all time. For me, the similarities are in how Jordan and Garp are both fascinating individuals who have improbable life experiences -- much more interesting than the rest of us -- develop a unique way of looking at life, surround themselves with unusual, even quirky companions and still manage to come off as average guys. Just as John Irving novels have wrestling, dancing bears, New England prep schools and scenes in Vienna, Austria, Pat Jordan's life has baseball, dogs, cigars and Florida. We can relate to these elements, but the books are more than the sum of the elements. Neither Irving's novels nor Jordan's memoir are about these things. They just give the writer an excuse to display talent, skill and a unique way of looking at the world.
"A Nice Tuesday" also conveys Jordan's sense of inevitable doom -- this obviously comes from the heart -- which reminds me of the "Under Toad" in Garp. Jordan knows that he always drives the people he loves away from him, but can't figure out why and can't seem to stop the process. How honest and uncommon to admit this secret fear that so many of us have.
A Nice Tuesday is an excellent choice for any adult reader, male or female, young, middle aged or old. It has humor, insight and poignancy. It is much more rewarding than any sports book I have ever read and should not be cheapened by that label. It would have been just as good a book if he had not pitched in the minor league game.
Extended Inning Classic.......2002-06-26
It must have been my lucky day when I found this gem in a remainder bin. I picked it to peruse from idle curiosity about the cover and title, not because I knew anything about Pat Jordan. Boy, was I ever ignorant.
I read a sentence, then a paragraph, then a page, and when hypnotized, I didn't want to stop there; so I bought it for the quality of its prose. I couldn't wait to start reading from the front and found it as funny, and occasionally profound, as it was well written.
First off, this is a memoir or autobiography written by someone that knows a lot about baseball, not a baseball book per se. Only the extremely obtuse would read it solely in the context of some imagined "baseball comeback" genre. The "Nice Tuesday" of the title is the day the author works towards in all his life relationships...baseball paralleling the personal stuff.
Jordan reflects on his Connecticut childhood, brief baseball celebrity, drag racing, gambling, father/son, brother/brother, dogs, Florida, writing, aging and yes, pitching with this engaging narrative. Above all else it is a book about how a man works out how to handle himself within the context of family (for better or worse) and career. It's a book about how to write the script of your own life. I don't know whether I'd get along with Jordan, the man, but he is a gifted, intelligent, honest writer.
In spirit, a Cross between Jim Bouton's classic 'Ball Four' and a novel by Hemingway of Salter. As soon as I finished this book I ordered his earlier work "A False Spring" and forced a close friend to read my copy of "A Nice Tuesday." Don't be afraid to pay full price, it's worth twice the cover!
Loved It!.......2000-02-02
I know nothing about baseball and did not need to. This was a great story about the authors' interesting life. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
In the world of screen culture, teachers are unfailingly represented as charismatic figures, able to tackle the deprivations their students face and to form special relationships with them that none of their staff colleagues can. But how realistic are such representations, and-- more importantly - what do real world teachers think about their reel world counterparts?
This book takes a closer look at the charismatic teacher as portrayed in films such as Blackboard Jungle, "To Sir, With Love" and "Dead Poets Society" and in television series such as Teachers. It considers the eccentric, resilient or romantic - but always charismatic- teacher in inner city schools, private or public schools and contrasts them with the views of practising teachers.
"Carry on Teachers" will be essential to media and cultural studies courses but is designed as much for teachers and those coming into the profession.

Fans - Stop messin' about & read this book!.......1998-04-28
We "Carry On" fans have actually been quite lucky with book tributes to the series. As well as this title I've read "The Carry On Companion" by Robert Ross and "What A Carry On" (a10/10 book published in 1988). Fans of the stars may also be interested in "Sid James" by Cliff Goodwin, "The Kenneth Williams Diaries" and "Just Williams". This book does not disappoint. It is warm tribute to the well-loved series with some great black and white photos and a personal verdict on each film.

Customer Reviews:
Not on my wavelength - worst guide I have seen.......2006-10-07
I found this book very frustrating. I often drive up Southern California using the excellent ABA guide and as soon as I hit Northen California it is like navigating in a fog. The directions are terrible and frequently I end up with a detailed map trying to work out where the site I am aiming for is located. Each chapter covers far too much ground to be possible to follow easily.
The 2nd major fault is there is no bar charts and checklist showing seasonal variation of numbers, frequency of occurance etc. It makes it very difficult to figure out what one is supposed to be looking for and when.
Northern California birding trip frustration.......2001-08-28
I'm afraid I'll have to agree with what's been said about this book. I took a trip earlier this month to Northern California and my friend and I found this book only mildly useful. It does provide general information, however for anything more than that, another book is needed. Seasonal variation is ignored in some site descriptions and detailed directions to sites that require them are absent. There are no bar-charts to tell when a species is common, rare or even present, only a very general checklist in the back. Northern California is a large area to cover with a birding guide, so I can see why this book may be thin on detail. I think a much better bet would be to try John Kemper's "Birding Northern California". We saw this at the Pt. Reyes visitor's center near the end of our trip and certainly regretted not having it the whole time. Until an ABA/Lane guide comes out for this region, I think Kemper's is the best there is. Good birding!
A disappointment.......2000-06-05
This book needs work. It is not going to be a lot of help in planning a birding trip. It is too generalized.
Birder's Guide to Northern California.......2000-01-15
Don't waste your time or money on this book. The information was to generalized and did not include specifics. I have never experienced a book with such vague and poor directions to birding sites. Too bad that there is not an ABA guide to birding Northern California.

Just buy it and put it inside your drawer!.......2004-08-26
As a middle manager in big conglomerates for a decade (that means I failed to climb to the top), I strongly recommend you to buy the book and put it inside your drawer and not on your table if you want to have some competitive advantages after all. Without exaggeration, the book contains short but highly useful tips or checklists for over 95% of business engagements/tasks I can think of. Some reviewers criticized that the content is mostly common sense stuff. In my experience, the devil is in the details. It's efficient and "safe" to get a quick review of the important points for, say, budget discussion with your boss, interviewing a redundant staff, writing a complaint against your vendor, apologising to an angry customer and so on.
In a word, a must buy, unless you are confident enough to think that you are always on your top shape with perfect bullets and armors, for all situations and every single minute in a business day.
Never Read It.......2003-08-24
Couldn't make it through the book. Mostly common sense. I just needed it for a class. Better books exist on the same subject. Get those instead of this marketing tool.
Must book for anyone living in a dynamic environment.......2001-11-20
The guy who recommended this book said he wished he'd had it 20 years earlier in his career. I think he was right. This book is loaded with lists and list of things that you should think about in some situation. Someone has taken the time to itemize the things you should consider in dozens of different situations. Want to improve you customer realations. Take at look at that list and you'll find a lot of things that really make sense. These lists save you the time of trying to figure out what are the attributes if a given situation that you should be looking at. Great book for anyone. You won't use it every day but when you need it, one application of the list can repay you the price of the book many times over.
Most useful book on leadership and management you can get........2000-04-27
I work for the wholesale club division of the largest retail chain in America. Needless to say, you don't get a top-notch training course in being a supervisor or hourly manager there. This book was instrumental in my personal development in becoming a good supervisor.
The book is set up like a series of checklists. The advantage is that checklists are EASY to read and refer to. In fact virtually every situation you will face is covered by checklists.
In fact I enjoyed the many Sam Walton trademark management styles they incorporated into the book...it made it easier to connect with.
The book is simply outstanding and for the price you would be, quite frankly, a fool not to get it.
As we all know employee morale is paramount in having them take better care of our customers and/or product/services development/production. This book helps to develop you (if you let it) into a better manager/supervisor.
I would also recommend getting the book titled "Corps Business" by David Freedman (I have a review on this also). The two books should be purchased together and READ. You will get excited about developing yourself into a BETTER manager/supervisor as well as developing your company (both books provide great advice on how to do this). The small investment (we're talking under $40 tops here) will surely pay off (either in promotions or company bonuses!)
Good luck!
A great "gift" for your supervisors and managers!.......1999-08-17
Everyone can benefit from improved leadership skills, but it's sometimes difficult to take criticism constructively. This book provides managers with a lot of food for thought, broken down into managable lists. If your managers need a little help improving their leadership skills, buy them a copy of this book. I keep a copy of the book on my desk and re-read one list each day. When conducting Leadership Seminars, I have used some of the lists to initiate group discussions.
