Book Description
Based on the loving kindness and compassion meditation of the Lotus Sutra, Touching the Earth contains one of the most popular and transformative practices of Thich Nhat Hanh.
Written as a poetic conversation with the Buddha, it is a step-by-step guidebook to the practice of "Beginning Anew." Thich Nhat Hanh describes it as having the capacity to put an end to obstacles brought about by wrongdoing in the past and to give our feeling of the joy of being alive a chance to return. According to many of his students who are deeply touched by this practice, it can help to renew our faith and develop our compassion as it presents an opportunity to heal our relationships through forgiveness and embrace our ancestors, parents, teachers and ourselves.
Book Description
Arguing that what the earth chiefly needs is conscious human cooperation beyond the material realm, this unique, interactive, spiritual perspective on how to save the planet describes ways to communicate with Gaia herself and become her hands, allowing her to use her vast resources to save all the creatures on her surface, including humans. Because people have forgotten how to listen and converse with the goddess, this book purports that she uses natural catastrophes as her "hands," to get humankind's attention. By using the exercises for personal growth, readers can learn to use their emotions, intuition, and feelings rather than intellect and these traumas will be avoided and replaced with joy and companionship.
Book Description
On Touching the Earth, Buddhist masters Thich Nhat Hanh and Sister Chân Không update this ancient teaching for the modern student. You learn each phase of this practice, which will help empty your body of resentment while opening it to compassion for all life. Through the songs of Sister Chân Không (whom Thich Nhat Hanh has called a living bodhisattva, or one dedicated to the enlightenment of all beings) you also gain an ancient Buddhist technique for communicating tenderness and healing to your body. Touching the Earth comes to you with an illustrated booklet explaining this artful meditation in detail.

BRAVO! .......2006-01-16
this book is a master piece, I couldnt stop reading it for 2 days, I stayed the second day for 6 hours NON STOP reading it, unbelievably thirlling, exciting, and revealing the hidden part behind mysterious things in life.
I am a big fan of Paulo Cuelho, and I was never driven away by any book except if he wrote it, but when I layd my hands on this book,
everything was so tangible, the way she described things, how she classified her book, and the way she explained how the persons in her book felt ( in love, ashamed, neglected, high, betrayed, shocked and finally how some of them died with an over dose)...
its not only about drugs and sex. No, it is more of an evidence, that destiny is inevitable, and that no matter how hard we try, destiny is inescpable, and she guides you smoothly thro the whole story, till at the end you shall reach your own conclusion..
if you got to read this book, just see how she describes the persons, Ricky, Elizabeth, Brue, and all of them, you feel that you live with them, you are actually seeing them
in description this writer is magnificent, the sequence, the revealing of the unknown, describing things we might have thought of trying or experiencing for once in our lives..... I recommend it for people who like to be intellectually stimulated....
BRAVO!
unexpected.......2005-12-02
I loved rice mother very much since it touches our hearts about a family struggle. I recommended her book to many of my friends and they just loved it. However, her second novel was a total disappointment since she gave too much emphasis on the drug addicts, their lives, struggle and too much of portrayal of pain and agony. I felt down and demoralized everytime I read the book that I skipped a lot of the pages before ending it. I personally felt that Rani lost her focus along the way as she wrote the book as she tend to go back and forth on some characters while losing the readers sequence of thoughts.
Not as good as The Rice Mother.......2005-08-08
Having read Rani's other novel- The Rice Mother, I thought this book was also going to be poetic and a gem. Instead it was a brutal look into life (read: sex and drugs) in London when you're transplanted from a village in South Asia. A pair of Balinese twin girls are sent by their father to live in London on their own (with their paternal uncle checking on them from time to time) after their mother dies. They find a flat, get paid a meagre wage at a restaurant and fall into trouble almost instantaneously. They meet a restauranteur who is sex-crazed, lusts after one of them, and introduces them to drugs and a circle of depraved friends. Their life and their innocence, as they know it, is over. Too late, they realise that life back at home was simple even if they didn't have all they wanted, but atleast they had each other and a grandmother who loved them. The author must have done some very indepth research into how drug users live; her characters are not conceived out of thin air. However, this is book is NOT a "light read". I found it disturbing, sad and haunting.

Book Description
The ancient Egyptians dedicated special temples to the sacred art of dreaming. Today, the world_s shamans and elders encourage humanity to imagine the world that we want to see emerge, to dream into reality, healing, balance, and peace. Taos artist Kimberly Webber's paintings are meditations on the sacred vision of dreams, on the mystery, power, and magic of the natural world, and on the realms of the archetypes that reside in our collective super-consciousness.
Webber's oil paintings are created with a merging of traditional Asian and classic European schools of painting. The completed paintings are seventy to one hundred layers of pure earth pigment, subtle color washes, and delicate oil glazes. Traditional materials such as vine charcoal, powdered mineral and earth pigments, ink and handmade oil formulas are used to produce paintings that are luminous, multidimensional, and light interactive. Webber prefers natural elements for their superior practical applications as well as for their metaphysical properties. The process is an alchemical blending of materials, light, and intent. Touching Earth invites the viewer to discover recent works in beautiful, full-color plates with insightful writings by the artist.
Kimberly Webber's paintings are exhibited and collected internationally.
Kimberly Webber's paintings are meditations on the sacred vision of dreams, on the mystery, power, and magic of the natural world, and on the realms of the archetypes that reside in our collective super-consciousness.

Book Description
A driver of great courage, a young man full of life generous: Eugenio Castellotti lived just 26 years and five months - not much more than James Dean - and was a symbol of a love of motor racing, of challenge and risk. A victory of heart over reason was what they called his greatest success, the 1956 Mille Miglia win and it is to the beat of his heart that most of his brief existence is inexorably linked. Alife which, for the first time, has been reconstructed after vast detailed research and is now a new book, published simultaneously by Giorgio Nada Editore in two versions, Italian and English. The author is Cesare De Agosini, one of the best-known motor sport writers, who has also given us the biographies of Tazio Nuvolari, Gilles Villeneuve and Clay Regazzoni, three authentic best sellers. His elegant writing style, rich with poetic inflection, goes well the mere chronological reconstruction of Castellotti's life. He digs deep into the soul of the man, to enable the reader to participate not only in the facts but also the feelings, the passions, the emotions of this young man. This new book is complemented by an extraordinary collection of photographs, brought together by Gianni Cancellieri: beautiful pictures, many of them unpublished, that come from private collections and some of the most prestigious archives in Europe and America.
Book Description
Whether defined by the carnivalesque excesses of Troma studios ( The Toxic Avenger), the arthouse erotica of Radley Metzger and Doris Wishman, or the narrative experimentations of Abel Ferrara, Melvin Van Peebles, Jack Smith, or Harmony Korine, underground cinema has achieved an important position within American film culture. Often defined as "cult" and "exploitation" or "alternative" and "independent," the American underground retains separate strategies of production and exhibition from the cinematic mainstream, while its sexual and cinematic representations differ from the traditionally conservative structures of the Hollywood system. Underground U.S.A. offers a fascinating overview of this area of maverick moviemaking by considering the links between the experimental and exploitative traditions of the American underground.
Book Description
Long before lawsuits and warning labels, cigarettes and alcohol were advertised as part of a healthy way of life. From celebrity endorsements to doctor recommendations, an ill-informed nation zealously responded to persuasive advertising. To ensure that these vices were considered social necessities, liquor, beer, and cigarette companies made sure every possible market was reached through provocative print campaigns. WHAT'S YOUR POISON? is a rose-colored retrospective of the addictive advertisements that hooked a generation. Shocking by today's standards, these printed messages demonstrate the innocence and ignorance of drinking and smoking's golden age. A visual blast from the past, WHAT'S YOUR POISON? proves that we truly have come a long way, baby.

tiny doses.......2007-01-29
a fascinating and highly entertaining little book that provides much insight into the drugs and campaigns through which our government has profited for decades. The War on Some Drugs continues while the bureaucrats laugh all the way to the bank.
For those of you bemused about the tiny size of this book, look at the price...it's a bargain of a coffee table item!
Plenty of examples of addictive advertising's various approaches and appeal .......2005-11-07
Students of business and entrepreneurial readers will appreciate the focus and examples of advertising of addictive products during the 1940s-60s, psychology students will find it of interest, collectors of memorabilia will find the color reproductions excellent, and art students will appreciate the ad insights. In short, a wide audience will find much color and plenty of examples of addictive advertising's various approaches and appeal in What's Your Poison? Addictive Advertising Of The '40s-'60s.
Great idea in a miniscule package.......2005-08-24
Wow, I was thrilled when I ordered this for my husband's birthday...it was sort of for me too (hehe).
Then I got it in the mail...
This is a neat book with shockingly funny ads such as the following, "Before you scold me, Mom...maybe you'd better light up a Marlboro"...this out of the mouth of an infant! YIKES!
But at 5-1/4 by 6-1/2 inches, I can't read much of the advertising, even with my reading glasses AND a magnifying glass.
Yes, I'm in my mid forties, but my eyes aren't that bad! The print on some of the ads is miniscule and I'm very, very, disappointed with that. I was actually searching the internet to see if I got the small version, but alas, this is it.
The book is nice and solid and visually appealing though. The photos are beautiful and quite entertaining and the health claims and star commentaries are hilarious.
If this book was 50% larger, it would have gotten a five.
Vice can be nice.......2005-07-29
"What's Your Poison" by Kirven Blount is a witty look back at cigarette and alcohol (here meaning beer and spirits)advertising from the 1940s through 1970s. In a tone free from the teeth-gnashing self-righteousness which usually tails the subjects of smoking and drinking, Blount cheerfully (and truthfully) declares, "Vices are inextricably woven into our cultural fabric, and they're not going away."
You will be shocked and/or amused at seeing actors, dancers, figure skaters, ballplayers, doctors, cowboys, and Santa Claus declaring that cigs and booze are essential ingredients of the good life.
I must give this book four stars instead of five, though, because of two problems with the presentation:
1. At 6.5"H x 5.25"W, the book is simply too small to show these ads to their full advantage (remember, they originally appeared in huge glossies like "Life" and "Look"). The beautiful illustrations are diminished (especially at three to a page), and you can barely read these text-rich ads (compare them to today's less-words-the-better mentality).
2. Unlike Taschen's "All-American Ads" series, this book gives no dates -- a disappointment to a history fan like me.
Still, "Where's Your Poison" belongs in the library of everyone who loves mid-20th century pop culture.
SINFULLY FUNNY ADVERTISING.......2005-07-19
Cute little babies hawking Marlboros? Santa pushing Camels, Prince Albert, and Budweiser? No, it's not scenes from the politically incorrect scrapbook, but it call can be found in this great new book of classic tobacco and alcohol advertising of the 40's, 50's and 60's. Filled with classic ads and sidebar bits of trivia, "What's your Poison?" is a great look back at how advertising has changed over the past fifty years or so. In the 40's and 50's, testimonial ads were widely used. And it didn't seem to matter whose testimonial it was so long as you had a large enough group endorsing your product. Naturally celebrity endorsements were highly sought after by both tobacco and alcohol makers and they are among the most amusing to read. One great ad shows several prominent celebrities including John Wayne Maureen O'Hara, Alan Ladd, and Brian Keith, all offering their praise of the taste and mildness of Camel cigarettes. Then there's Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis dressed in sailor costumes pushing Chesterfields and a somewhat inebriated David Niven in a graduate's cap extolling the virtues of Carling's Ale.
Incredibly, doctor's endorsements were featured prominently in many ads during this period. One ad proudly boasts that "More doctors smoke Camels than any other brand!" And a sidebar shockingly relates that in 1955, 53% of all doctors smoked compared to just 3% some forty years later. Doing anything they can to push their products, the tobacco companies frequently advertised their products as having less nicotine and giving no irritation to your throat.
Among the most entertaining ads are the ones from the holidays. A brother and sister greet their dad with a carton of Chesterfields, wrapped up in a bright red bow. And there's a serene Christmas setting as you look out through the window on a snow-covered village under a bright, peaceful moon...with a bottle of scotch in the foreground. And Santa pitched everything from cigarettes, to pipe tobacco, to lighters, and booze. A master salesman!
Beer fans will enjoy seeing the advertising of many forgotten beer brands such as Ballantine, Blatz, Goebel, and my dad's favorite when I was a kid, Hamm's! What was advertised as "premium" beers in the 50's was the bottom of the shelf cheap stuff in the 70's and 80's. And of course, sex sold back then just as it does today and the advertising reflects it with gorgeous pin-up models and even the "Marlboro Man".
"What's your Poison" is a smart little book that is a real eye-opener to the way things used to be. Very amusing!

Customer Reviews:
Truly Excellent Source Book for Paralegals.......2007-05-30
I don't understand the negative reviews of this book. I think the reviewers confused it with another book. This is a big solid book full of information for paralegals and paralegal students. We used this book in three different classes at WOLI (Washington Online Learning Institute) where I attended paralegal school. We used it in the intro class, where we learned all about the paralegal profession, the legal research class, which we used in conjunction with learning how to do legal research via the computer on Westlaw, and also in the ethics course. I know WOLI uses this book also for some other courses that I did not take, but other students do. I think this book is very well written and is chock full of interesting and useful information. I recommend it highly. I really enjoyed studying from this book, and now as a working paralegal (litigation and trial prep work at a Manhattan law firm; I also worked in the corporate dept. for a few months) this book has a prominent place on my library shelf and I still pick it up and read it quite frequently. A very good book.
A students perspective..........2007-02-11
The book is a wonderful source of information and is organized in such a way that it's easy to read right through and not feel lost by lack of verbal explanations. But, the font size is very small which makes it difficult to study or read for extended periods withough resting your eyes. It's also thick and very heavy. We use this book in our Paralegal class at George Mason University.
Useful text and reference.......2006-08-17
I use this book as the textbook in an Intro to Law for Paralegals class that I teach. The books is incredibly well-organized and useful. There are very few typos, and additionally it contains great references at the end of each chapter. While I think the book is designed for the classroom setting, it can also be used for self-teaching as well. Even after the class is over students can use the book as a reference guide.
Excellent Resource Guide.......2000-01-17
This book is an excellent text for indivdiuals wishing to study the paralegal profession or the legal system in general. I would highly recommend it to any of my peers in the legal community.
