Book Description
GEORGE WESTINGHOUSE the man may be overshadowed by his inventions, company, or legend. But in this biography by Henry G. Prout, Westinghouse's personal life and history are recounted along with his many inventions and enterprises -- and his inventions and enterprises were enormous. "He dealt in the same week, and often in the same day, with organization, financial and executive affairs, commercial affairs, and the engineering details of half a dozen companies in two hemispheres," Prout noted. "They were as far apart in kind as the air brake and natural gas, and as far apart in geography as San Francisco and St. Petersburg." This biography covers topics as diverse as power signaling and switching, Westinghouse's use of the alternating current, his activities at Niagara Falls, his European enterprises, his financial methods, and his overall impact on rail transportation and the power industry.

George Westinghouse is the man who made rapid transit manageable. Modern transportation would have gotten nowhere but for him. The swift, steam-driven wheels of transportation might have remained as unsafe as TNT if George Westinghouse had never hitched his air brakes to them. He made it safe to go fast by showing us how to slow down, to stop. This little book gives a biographical sketch of this fascinating man.

Book Description
Bruce McLaren arrived in Europe in 1958 virtually unknown. As this fascinating biography relates, by the time of his fatal testing accident 12 years later he had established himself on both sides of the Atlantic as a driver of extraordinary versatility. He also founded the team that went on to become one of the most successful in Formula 1. Content includes McLaren's fifth-place effort in the 1958 German Grand Prix and runner-up finish in the Autocar F2 Championship; his victory at the 1959 American Grand Prix, where he became the youngest-ever GP winner; his second-place finish in the 1960 World Championship; building and racing his own car, the McLaren M1A; winning Le Mans for Ford in 1966 with Chris Amon, and Sebring in 1967 with Mario Andretti; and success in the Can-Am series as a constructor and two-time driver champion.

At the height of his career, Richard Pryor did something no other comedian had done up to that point: he took listeners deeply into his life, baring himself before audiences as he exposed his foibles and his follies, his tumultuous dealings with women and his misadventures with drugs. "People can't always handle it," he writes in Pryor Convictions. "But I knew that if you tell the truth, it's going to be funny." The pain and truth came from Pryor's earliest years--from his childhood in Peoria, Illinois, where he was raised in bars and whorehouses, and sexually assaulted by an older boy when he was just 6 years old. After a stint in the army, Pryor set out to become an entertainer and began making the slow climb from hole-in-the-wall nightclubs to stardom. Sometimes profane, but always funny, Pryor Convictions is a no-holds-barred autobiography told in Pryor's inimitable comic voice.
Book Description
Richard Pryor's life story is one of the most controversial and shocking of any performer in American history. Raised in the bars and whorehouses of Peoria, where he gained first-hand knowledge of racism and hypocrisy, he toiled for years as a bland Cosby clone before finding his true voice as one of America's most brilliant comedians and one of its most profound, and profane, social critics. At the apex of his career one of Hollywood's biggest stars, and one of the most influential black men in the world it all came tumbling down in a maelstrom of drugs, multiple marriages, heart attacks, violence, and suicide attempts, finally ending in a notorious incident where he lit himself on fire while freebasing cocaine. Pryor Convictions tells the uncensored story of the man behind the myth. Written in Pryor's own words, this human and compelling account is like the man himself: raw, funny, fearless, and completely unforgettable.
Customer Reviews:
Adequete incite from a necessary comedian.......2007-09-05
The book is immediately interesting and arresting. However, Mr. Pryor goes through lulls of semi-coherent, discractive writing. Pryor is very open with the reader in this book, describing everything he went through in fascinating candor. That alone makes this a must buy. Rich talks about selling out to mainstream Hollywood throughout his career. He did most pictures, regardless of the often atrocious scripts, admittedly, just for the money. There are also many fascinating stories about his habitual drug use and addiction(s). But this fact and the obligatory stories and excuses that follow allow the reader to realize he was a wild, carefree human being. Who was, admittedly, lucky to live as long as he did, considering the aforementioned drug abbuse.
The book is 247 pages and 30-plus chapters which makes for a quick read. You won't be emphatically pleased that you purchased this book, but you won't be upset either.
I tried..........2007-03-27
I tried to give Pryor a chance and see what makes him do what he did. I'd read his daughter's book first and he sounded like a pretty violent and mentally challenged man. I figure there are three sides of the story, so I'll read the second side. This dude blew me. He joked about beating up women like it was justifiable, had no idea it was wrong, and continuously excused his own faults. When children do it, I can blow it off as just having to grow up and understand responsibility. But how can I respect a comedian who does so many things that aren't funny? I wasn't a fan of Pryor before I read his book and now I'm definitely sticking to that opinion. I did, however, enjoy his alter ego's anecdotes.
Masterful Memoir.......2004-04-25
Using excerpts from his "Mudbone" monologues to accentuate the events of his life, Pryor puts together a collection of memories that make PC a must-read. I can only think of a few other autobiographies that even come close.
World's Most Profane and Profound Autobiography.......2003-03-02
In chapter 20 of this book Richard Pryor offhandedly calls his comedy style "profane and profound" and inadvertently sums up his life and this book perfectly. This is at various times the most dirtyminded, hilarious, shocking, or downright disturbing autobiography you may ever read, but always with his great dark humor. With a bizarre and damaging childhood in Peoria, Richard Pryor was raised in his grandmother's place of business - which happened to be a whorehouse with all of its shady and unwholesome characters. A violent and painful childhood full of profanity and prejudice came out in Richard's comedy, which was truly groundbreaking in its shocking honesty. He lived a wild life in the spotlight, with addictions and a constant parade of rough women, including five wives that he divorced six times. The wives are hard to keep track of, but Richard is always brutally honest about his attitudes toward women even if it's rarely pretty. He also has a very refreshing outlook on racial matters, as the prejudice that was so damaging failed to ruin his respect for all people of any color. Most of the tail end of the book concerns his nearly born again soul searching about his infamous addictions and latest losing battle with multiple sclerosis. In addition to Richard's straightforward and unforgiving narratives, there are very frequent asides from one of his stage characters, Mudbone, who here is acting as his even more brutally honest alter ego. This gives the book an often jarring schizophrenic character, and surely reflects the true workings of Pryor's dark genius.
More Respect than "Pryor".......2002-09-05
This has to be one of the most honest and compelling autobiographies I ever read! I have an immense amount of respect for the intimate details that Rich felt comfortable with sharing with readers about his early life and personal problems. Though some parts dealt with painful issues, the comedic genius he is, he manages to have readers smiling through tears. I found it particularly painful to read his battle with MS, which I watched my mother suffer with, but again, the humor is always there. Richard Pryor is the epitomy of a survivor, not to mention one of the most talented comedians of our time. This was a very inspirational and enjoyable read and I recommend the purchase A.S.A.P.

In a world of lip synching, breast implants, payola punditry, and staged reality shows, it's hard to know the real from the fake. Hippo Eats Dwarf is the essential field guide to today's Misinformation Age. For instance, Reality Rule 6.1: Just because you read it on the Internet doesn't make it true.
With case files, reality checks, definitions, and plenty of doctored photos, Hippo Eats Dwarf is an entertaining guide to life, death, eBay, and everything in between.
Customer Reviews:
A fascinatating read.......2007-07-29
Covering such diverse topics as the Turin Shroud and the 'death' of Elvis Presley, this is an extremely witty and informative guide to notorious hoaxes. It never fails to go into detail and often comes out with little-known facts. I had never before realised that the publication of Alan Sokal's spoof scientific-paper constituted treason, or that he was jailed for seven years (a portion of the sentence having been served in Al Capone's former cell at Alcatraz). Similarly, it was a shock to learn that John Major is a dedicated crop-circle maker, who regularly rose before 3am to create arable-mischief: while serving as Prime Minister! Amazon users may be interested to note the inclusion of Amazon.com's top 500 reviewer Henry Raddick, whose many spoof reviews are well-known across the internet. Boese spends a little time exploring the psychology of hoaxers but, despite his best efforts, he is unable to come up with an answer to the biggest question: What actually motivates these morally-bankrupt buffoons to waste everybody's time on such vapid, unfunny pranks?
And you thought hippos were vegetarians.......2007-04-25
I was a little grossed out by the fake pregnancies, the male pregnancies, the male lactation and the disgusting plastic surgery and anorexia in the first two chapters, but after that the book got good. Surprisingly good. Alex Boese's formula includes a lot of information and misinformation, and gives you the reader in some cases the opportunity to guess which is which. For example, did a circus dwarf fall into the mouth of a yawning hippo, triggering the hippo's swallowing reflex?
How about Snowball, that 87-pound cat you've probably seen pictures of. Real? Or the bonsai kittens in a bottle?
Just to prove this is NOT a fake Amazon review written by the author in disguise (see page 112), I am going to reveal the answers (sorry Alex): no, no, and no. Well, you knew that. But if you've seen the hippo nature special on PBS you know that hippos will on occasion join the crocs and the lions at the kill.
Aside from the many hoaxes and the you've-got-to-be-kidding-me's, and various other wtf's, what Boese does so well in this book is entertain in a way that makes you think. What I was thinking was can we believe anything anymore? I mean almost any photo can be faked and photoshopped. Politicians steal elections and invent phony reasons for wars as massive Halliburton welfare projects, etc. And the media doesn't know veracity from its elbow. And it's getting so nobody really cares anymore. Boese is documenting this and calling it to our attention.
His main source is the Web in all its quirky, bogus, hoaxy and fun-loving glory. But hold on, Virginia. One would think after all these years that somebody would be getting a clue that--quoting Boese's "Reality Rule 6.1": "Just because you read it on the Internet doesn't mean it's true." Take the strange case of "The Gullible Professor" (p. 125). Weldong Xu of Harvard University (Bush's grad school, don't you know) "received an e-mail informing him of a business proposal that would transfer $50 million into his bank account...The only catch was the usual 'unforeseen expenses,' numbering hundreds of thousands of dollars. He raised $600,000 from friends and colleagues, telling them he was collecting money to fund SARS research in China... [E]ven after he was arrested, Xu continued to insist that his friends overseas were going to send him $50 million."
Judging from my email, the Nigerian scam is small potatoes compared to the lottery scam. I get several "Congratulations you have won!!!!" for every "I am Rwanda Ugamba...reply urgently my secretary." Just for the heck of it I added up how much I had won in just one 24-hour period: $32.7 million. And I do this every day.
Then there are the "Internet-Crossed Lovers" who, assuming new identities, joined an online chat room for singles. Lo and behold when they arrived at their pre-arranged rendevous, it turned out that they were none other than each other's spouse! Shades of the "Pina Colada Song," God help us.
One of the funniest bits is Boese's report of "The New 'Honor System' Virus." You get an email that reads: "This virus works on the honor system. Please forward this message to everyone you know, then delete all the files on your hard drive. Thank you for your cooperation." (p. 123)
There's a lot of comical stuff about George W. and the Bush administration and all of its mendacities and misinformations and outright b.s., and some golden oldies from the Clinton years as well, some of it true and some of it not so true. But here's a big time reality check for you: Boese gives various definitions of neologisms throughout the book such as this one:
"Money Party, n.: The monolithic political party rumored to govern the United States. Said to camouflage its monopoly on power by periodically hiring new actors to serve as presidents, senators, and congressmen." (p. 241)
In his naivete, Boese thinks he's joking around. Actually there IS only one political party in the US with two branches, the Republican and the Democratic, and they do indeed send in a new cast every few years.
This is a "fun" book obviously with lots of photos (touched up and not) and other art work. The text appears in brown, green and white on green and brown and sometimes white, but it's not distracting. I would rate this as just a clever bon-bon book except for the fact that Boese really does come up with some startling juxtapositions between reality and unreality, and because the unavoidable message that will hit the reader is a profound one. I would call that message, "Reality, what a concept!" (From Robin Williams, some years ago, when he was still doing TV's "Mork and Mindy.")
One final warning: pictured on page 139 is a "DVD Rewinder." Regardless of how much it is marked down, don't buy it.
An entertaining and informative look at the reality, hoaxes, and b.s. in the "Misinformation Age"........2007-04-11
It's no surprise to most people that the Internet is chock-full of misinformation, half-truths, and self-perpetuating myths. I'm sure you have received an e-mail from someone about some strange photo, story, or plea with the claim "this is true!". Invariably, though, these mails turn out to be unworthy of the pixels they're displayed upon, with leaps of logic or some other rudimentary clue which could have easily been researched on Snopes or Wikipedia. Unfortunately, a quick scroll through the list of the previous recipients of these mails tell the tale of long lists of people who are ready to perpetuate the myths they've been sold as fact. It seems the Internet has become a fertile ground, much like television and other media, for hoaxes to flourish unchallenged. Hippo Eats Dwarf is a great tune-up for your inner B.S. detector, and a hilarious look between the blatantly ridiculous, and the surprisingly true.
Hippo Eats Dwarf bills itself as "A Field Guide to Hoaxes and other B.S.". Indeed, it reads like a tour guide through some of the more bizarre corners of Each section contains various "Reality Rules", where the author informs the reader of various immutable truths, such as "No one in Hollywood has their original body parts", and "There's nothing like the promise of future wealth to separate a person from his sanity". Also included are definitions of terms you might not have heard of before, like "Dead Cat Bounce", and "VCNC" (Vast Cable News Conspiracy). Each of these "Reality Rules" are interspersed between the various stories, and add to the already humorous content of the book.
Most of the book, however, is a museum of the various curiosities that have spread through the Internet. Hippo Eats Dwarf consists of 14 chapters covering birth, death and practically everything in between. The chapters are Birth, Bodies, Romance, Food, Photography, The World Wide Web, E-mail, eBay, Technology, The News, Entertainment, Advertising, Business, Politics, War, and Death. Each chapter contains lots of these strange stories, anecdotes, and occasional pictures of the subject matter. The book is well paced, and very entertaining. Much of the material may be familiar to you, but I'll bet that unless you've actively sought out the bizarre and weird, there's at least something in this book you haven't heard of before. Lest I give you the impression that this book only covers Internet oddities, there's also ample coverage of other hoaxes that almost made the news, such as the faked JFK / Marilyn Monroe love letters (which ABC paid handsomely to obtain, only to realize that the typewriter which typed them hadn't been manufactured. Plus, the letters had Zip Codes, which weren't used until after JFK's death). Among the technology bits are some hoaxes (the Rand computer photo), some legitimate products (the DVD rewinder), and some products we'd like to see someday (iLoo, anyone?).
Hippo Eats Dwarf is a very easy-reading book. The topics are the right fodder for anyone mildly curious about the realms of the strange and fictitious. I found myself just turning the pages looking for the next ridiculous story. The stories are engaging, and the author gives each the right mix of reporting and commentary. I'd highly recommend giving this book to the next person who forwards you a 15 page chain letter (don't break the chain!), or the office co-worker who photocopies a photograph of a 100lb cat to post into the break-room. Hippo Eats Dwarf may not stop them from propagating this stuff, but at least you'll be secure in the knowledge that you tried.

HIPPO EATS DWARF: A FIELD GUIDE TO HOAXES AND OTHER B.S. is hilarious! If you want something light and fun to read, then this is the book for you! And how could you not want to read a book called HIPPO EATS DWARF? As if that isn't the greatest title ever!
This book is all about hoaxes that people have created or have thought up! There are some great ones in this book. They are things as obvious as the "you must forward this e-mail or you are going to die" e-mails that everyone gets to the unreality of reality TV shows.
I really liked this book, and have a friend who really liked it, also. There are some really funny, useless facts in this book, too. I definitely will tell all of my friends to read this!

Entertaining Read!.......2006-09-26
Hippo Eats Dwarf picks up where Boese's former non fiction book The Museum of Hoaxes left off, like with that book it is a great read and isn't just limited to America like so many books in this genre are. The only criticism of this book that I have is that it repeats a fair number of hoaxes and other entries from the former book for example Tourist Guy at the World Trade Centre. If you are only going to get one of the two, I'd definitely get Hippo Eats Dwarf as it is a lot thicker and has obviously has more information inside.
In Hippo Eats Dwarf Boese tackles myths that are taken as fact in places such as the media and on the Internet. He explains how many photographs are doctored with programs like Photoshop, how people fake their deaths, how people manipulate the stockmarket, the unethical tricks of advertising and marketing. Con artist tricks used to get you to part with your money and a number of web addresses of humorous websites that have shocked and caused outrage to those who didn't bother to look closely where the sites told them it was joke are also included, although not all are still operational.
An interesting item from within Hippo eats Dwarf for those of us who participate in the review writing process on this site is that Boese points out that many reviews on Amazon are written by the authors, their families, friends and publishers. He obviously isn't the first to make this claim (one of Westlake's fictional characters, who is an author with writers block talks about writers and Amazon in one of his novels). Many of us have also noticed that often when you write a review that is not in favour of a book within a week you have one or more not helpful votes when no other reviews at all have been posted. Many rumours also abound (not stated in this book) that the top ranking reviewers are not real people either, as it is impossible to read the volume of books they claim to each and every day plus they seem to get elements of the plot wrong on numerous occasions. Whether they are a book lovers club writing under the one pen name or Amazon staff trying to set a high benchmark to encourage you to post more reviews I guess we'll never know. Well unless maybe this can be investigated for the next book in this interesting and entertaining series!

A Genuine Gem.......2000-11-02
Without a doubt, this reprint of "Effective Card Magic" is one of the most outstanding treatments written on card magic. An entire act of card tricks could easily be culled from this book.
Don't buy it -- it's too good to spread around!.......2000-01-10
I hope a lot of people take the first reviewer's advice and stay away from this book. Then, card magicians like myself will be able to fry you with effects in this "childish" tome.
For those interested in some good card work and clever moves that still populate card literature, you need to read this book. It's simply part of your required reading. The section on dealing seconds is one of the most detailed in all magic, and it gives a clear practice regimen to assist the student in learning to do the move.
Again, please -- don't buy this book!
Card Magic For Ameteurs and Professionals.......1999-04-17
If I could have, I would have gave this book no stars. This book is for three-year olds. NO, and I mean NO audience would be entertained by this book. The tricks are so easy and noticable that everyone would know how to do them. For example: 2 of hearts plus 2 of clubs equalls 5 of spades, oops I mean 4. You just have to set the deck. You can come up with more entertaining and better tricks than these even if you are just a beginner.
Customer Reviews:
classic magic book........2000-01-28
This book contains many of the classic tricks we see in other books involving magic, thus not making it very different. On the other hand, the last chapter contains a section on stage illusions, which contains the methods behind How Houdini walked through a brick wall, how to make a piano disappear, and how to transport a person shot out of a cannon into a sealed container. An average book.

Customer Reviews:
microsoft offic excel 2003 inside out.......2007-05-07
From what I dicovered from the friend I puchased this book for, she is very delighted with this book because it has ALL the stars & bells she's been looking 4. Thanks alot !!!!
Highly Satisfied (as always).......2006-11-14
As with all Inside Out books from Microsoft Press, Excel 2003 was fantastic. The thing I love most about these books is (1) the comprehensiveness of the book while (2) not forgetting to cover the fundamentals of the product. Thus, anything you want to do with Excel is covered, from simple formatting to working with external data all the way up to creating highly complex spreadsheets with macros and programming. This book is perfect for all Excel (or spreadsheet) creators.
Good reference book for heavy Excel users.......2006-11-10
A very good book to have on the desk for those of you who use Excel extensively and might utilize some uncommon formulas and/or functions to save time.
MIcrosoft Office Excel 2003 Inside Out.......2006-11-05
I must admit I returned this book, but not because it lacked the resources. I was looking for a Visual Basic book for Excel and bought this in error, but looking through it briefly it contained a wealth of information. If you are not into the writing vba and just into writing functions and formulas this books has lots of nice tricks and tips.
Good book except a few errors and hpyes..........2006-08-22
This book contains a lot of errors which should be corrected, and many pro-microsoft or authors' commercial tool hypes (which costs you your time). Some contents are repeating and it may take for you to finish the book longer than it should, but nicely written and well explaining a variety of topics. Basically this is a good book with few minor problems. With the same money, however, I am afraid that taking another Excel book could be a better choice.
