Book Description

Napoleon Hill's inspirational classic, Think and Grow Rich, has been a bestseller since its original publication more than fifty years ago. But there has never before been a biography of this influential thinker.Hill was born in poverty in rural Virginia. A troublemaker, he seemed destined for a bad end until his stepmother took him in hand, gave him a typewriter and encouraged him to write. With a passion born of the desire for success, he worked his way through law school and embarked on a career as a business journalist. In a 1908 interview with Andrew Carnegie, the steel magnate challenged the young Hill to codify the rules of achievement that had made America so strong. Hill accepted, and his great work began.Over the next twenty years he interviewed successful people from all walks of life, finally distilling his discoveries into Think and Grow Rich. But along the way there were plenty of hardships and hard lessons, setbacks that Hill acknowledged came from his own failings. It is this biography's frank discussion of Hill's private life and his personal struggles that make it so inspiring and useful for any fan of Napoleon Hill. The lessons that Hill taught to others were often lessons he had learned himself, and his eventual triumph is the perfect testament to the power of his conviction:"WHAT THE MIND OF MAN CAN CONCEIVE, IT CAN ACHIEVE."

4 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable read.......2007-05-18

I couldn't put the book down. Mr. Hill sure had a "roller coaster" of life, like so many of us experience. Think and Grow Rich is a classic and very well may of helped more people to financial success than any other book ever written. I have read and apllied it to my life. His persistence and focus on achieving his goals will have a major impact on the reader. The author did a wonderful job of sharing a lot of knowledge about Mr. Hill's life that completely blew me away.

3 out of 5 stars PIONEER OF SUCCESS.......2002-12-30

When I first saw this book on the shelf I didn't hesitate to purchase it. I was an avid reader of Napoleon Hill's books and was always curious about his life. That curiousity has been somewhat satisfied by reading this biography of him written the executive director of the Napoleon Hill Foundation.

A Lifetime of Riches chronicles the roller coaster life of one of the pioneers of success programs. Born of modest circumstances Napoleon Hill rose to become one of the greatest promoters of personal and material success. His rise to fame didn't come easy. In fact he would fail many times but would get right up again for another try.

His tenaciousness, vision and audacity to try new ideas are the hallmarks of a personality that wouldn't accept defeat. Authors Michael Ritt and Kirk Landers provide the reader with a view of a man who had both his faults and weaknesses. Hill is obsessed with his mission for success and unfortunately placed everything else (including his wife and children) as third or fourth place. He paid for that mistake but still was able to bounce back in his later life.

I certainly enjoyed this book for its realistic portrayal of Hill (he was both saint and sinner) in both his good times and bad times. From his life the reader can learn it is never to late to start over regardless of age ( this was true of Hill and his father), financial setbacks or other impediments. Hill's life sets the standard for success even if it appears to allude you in time it will come.

A Lifetime of Riches is a good book to get some idea of Hill's life but it is not very detailed. Much of its information comes from Hill's unpublished "autobiography". Absent are any interviews or insight from those who worked with him. Very little is mentioned about his estrangement with his father and brothers or his importance in history as part of the motivational industry that is now a thriving industry. Perhaps someday more details will be given but for now enjoy this work of one of life's greatest motivators.

4 out of 5 stars N. Hill was human too...........2000-07-04

Having been a student of Napoleon Hill for many years I find Hill's own writing both brilliant, and inspirational.

Through this book I have come to learn Hill is human too, he had to learn some of his lessons the hard way. While the book lacks the brilliant motivational style of Hills own writing, we must remember that it is a biography. I question that Napoleon Hill could have been quite as honest about his life and some of its tragedies if he had written the book himself.

A Lifetime Of Riches provides good insight to the life of the man who has been such an inspiration to so many people, myself included. It offers a chronological view of the life of Hill. Granted, some of the detail of Hill's actual formulation of the success philosophy is missing. Still, the book reminds us that we strive for progress not perfection. If we fall down we must get back up.

My thanks to Mr Ritt, Mr Landers, and The Napoleon Hill Foundation for giving me the opportunity to have a greater understanding of Napoleon Hill.

3 out of 5 stars A needed book but disappointing.......1999-07-16

Hill's "Think & Grow Rich" may be the best self-help book ever written. So many of his readers will be glad to have any biography about him, even though this first one came 25 years after his death. I commend the authors for not whitewashing Hill, but there is so much missing. A major reason T&GR has become a classic is its underlying spiritual outlook. When Hill was a young man New Thought was blooming in America and he must have been influenced by such books as "In Tune With the Infinite." There is virtually no mention of Hill's spiritual development in the book. Hill commented constantly on how Andrew Carnegie gave him a 20-year commission to study and interview successful people, that Carnegie would provide letters of introduction to Hill and pay his travel expenses. If this is so, there must be at least one letter of introduction filed away somewhere. The authors quote none. Suppose Hill made that up. I don't think it cancels the value of his great book but it sure belongs in a biography. Finally, there is so little readily available about Hill, why not provide a bibliography of the magazines, newspapers and books where the best interviews and comments on Hill's work exist. Still, I recommend this book as valuable and interesting because there is nothing else.

If you're looking for more information about the films, versatility, and lasting impact of Alfred Hitchcock, Hitchcock: Centenary Essays should sate your hunger. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Hitchcock's birth, editors Richard Allen and S. Ishi Gonzales have assembled a collection of essays that cover not only the gamut of Hitchcock's movies, but also their continuing importance in today's culture. Acclaimed critics and theorists like Slavoj Zizek, Peter Wollen, Brigitte Peucker, William Rothman, Susan White, Raymond Bellour, and Lee Edelman contribute essays on famous films like Vertigo, Psycho, and The Thirty-Nine Steps, as well as lesser-known works like Stage Fright, Rope, Foreign Correspondent, and Marnie.

The book also covers Hitchcock's status as the "master of suspense," his forays into the genre of film noir, his interest in painting and sculpture, his humor, and his vision of the future. (It even offers a chapter somewhat mysteriously entitled "The Hitchcockian Blot.") "This centenary," the editors write, "provides us with the ideal occasion to consider the nature of Hitchcock's achievement as a filmmaker, the relationship between the artist and the authorial persona he partially (and ingeniously) manufactured, and the relationship of the director's work to the larger political and economic forces that shaped it. It also happens to coincide with the end of the twentieth century.... We would like to suggest that Hitchcock is the century's exemplary artist." --Raphael Shargel

        Book Description

Born in 1899, Alfred Hitchcock directed 57 films in a fifty year career that spanned the history of the moving image, from the silent era to stereo sound, black-and white to Technicolor, widescreen to television, and from Europe to Hollywood. His oeuvre has so comprehensively engaged the attentions of scholars of all critical persuasions that the study of his films is synonymous with the study of the art of cinema itself.
Alfred Hitchcock: Centenary Essays displays the range and breadth of Hitchcock scholarship and assesses the significance of his singular body of work. The book engages with Hitchcock's characteristic formal and aesthetic preoccupations, his relationship with modernism and politics and his engagement with romance and sexuality.
This volume of essays draws on the best of current Hitchcock criticism and opens up new directions for Hitchcock scholarship.

          Book Description

In this volume, twenty international scholars explore the work of two of the twentieth century’s greatest architectural historians: the American Henry-Russell Hitchcock (1903–1987) and the Englishman Sir John Summerson (1904–1992). Both men undertook architectural training and became key polemical figures in the establishment of Modernism in the 1930s. After the war, and especially in the 1950s, both turned more exclusively to historical research and writing. While their areas of interest overlapped, their approaches greatly differed.
The contributors to the book investigate the work and methodologies of Summerson and Hitchcock, from their interests in the Northern European (as opposed to Italian) Renaissance, through their studies of the nineteenth century as a precursor to their own times, to their involvement in contemporary issues of design and conservation. The book enhances our understanding of the influences that shaped these two important figures and of the place of architecture within the social and cultural environment.

4 out of 5 stars An Exotic, Mutilayered Quest.......2000-10-21

Planar travel without gates or portals, and a mystery to solve . . . Prepare your party for a lot of climbing as you journey through the Planes in search of adventures and answers. Author Cook has prepared an exotic layered quest for not only the Planescape campaign but also any other AD&D adventures.

Tales from the Infinite Staircase is an intricate set of eight interwoven adventures written around a central mystery, adventures that can be played alone or as the components of a single journey.

This volume introduces the concept of the Infinite Staircase throughout the Planes, linking it to the independent adventure For Duty & Deity (Forgotten Realms), which may be used along with Tales for Forgotten Realms and Planescape alike. Detailed notes are provided in each book for weaving the two together, or for playing any or all of the eight adventures in Tales in any Prime Material Plane campaign. The Tales themselves run a little toward the creepy, and vary from good places for getting lost and exploring to areas for finding necessary components in solving the book's central mystery. The variety here makes possible the extraction of any one tale for individual use, or for the party to visit, leave for a game year, and come back to re-enter the mystery if desired. Characters of good alignment are guaranteed to be badly stressed out by the beings they may need to ally with and the places they must go.

Presented as a stand-alone AD&D product for any campaign as well as for Planescape, this book contains the most basic information beyond the core AD&D rulebooks to run adventures out on some of the many Planes of existence. The imaginative non-Planescape dungeon master whose gaming group is not composed of book-bound rules lawyers will be perfectly able to manage here. However, many DMs new to the Planescape may end up wanting additional background on creatures, Planes, and the structure of the Planar universe, and the Planescape Monstrous Appendix I & II books will be of the greatest help here. Other helpful books and sets to beg, buy, or borrow for use with these adventures are the Planewalker's Handbook, A Guide to the Astral Plane, Planes of Law, and Planes of Chaos. The web of connections among these eight tales is quite complex and these volumes will cut down on the amount of notetaking, bookmarking, and sheer inventing that a dungeon master may require. The amount of Planescape slang (from the city of Sigil) in this book is fortunately kept to a minimum, easing beginner traumas.

Frankly, the statistics and information Cook gives for creatures and individuals could be much more conveniently arranged. Because monsters may pop up in many tales but are only fully described in one tale, the creature information should have either been all collected in one place, or, given the size of each section, more specific cross-references beyond "see Tale 8" ought to have been included.

This adventure is intended for a party of 3rd to 5th level Planescape characters, or for higher level characters from other campaigns. Possible adjustments for difficulty level are included in this book and the independent companion piece For Duty & Deity.

4 out of 5 stars Kill the bad guy, take the loot?? Not precisely..............1999-06-29

This book consists of 8 linked adventures which you can play separately or one after the other, in any order the players or DM choose(es). At the beginning of each adventure, DM notes tell you which modifications to make to that scenario depending on which adventures the characters already went through. The plot of the 8 adventures revolves around the same idea (defeating the iron shadow), with many subplots in the way, that can be further developed by the DM into short adventures. The only but is the effort/treasure ratio, in my opinion. Players with non-good alignment will need some extra motivation which, however, can be easily provided by the DM. Overall, a very nice work, most enjoyable for the DM and players alike.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful as filler material or jump off point.......1999-06-22

Describes the creation known as the inifinate staircase, a planar secret not known by many. The adventures detailed are good as subplots interspersed into an ongoing main plot. Gives the party another possible option for use in traversing the planes but its not as simple as portals and the journey is sure to be an adveture in itself. Overall an interesting adventure

5 out of 5 stars The most fun we've had playing in a long time!.......1998-10-15

As adventures come and go it all seems to go stale. This sprawling, non-linear adventure has made D&D fun again, like it was when everything was new. The worlds are fantastic, the storyline complex and involved, making the party do more than "hack and slash". A real pleasure to DM.

            2 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2006-06-15

I bought this book based on the feedback on this page. And although I would not call the book unusable, it has a lot of scope for improvement. The book layout is terrible and there is almost zero cross refrencing in the book itself. Imagine the author does not ask the reader to look in another part of the book for more information. So my verdict is that although the book has good content, it's laid out in a haphazard way.

            4 out of 5 stars Great beginner's book.......2006-04-03

I love this book. The reason I gave this book 4 stars is because it hopelessly fails trying to get into PowerPoint programming territory. The author should have stayed away from this area and concentrated more on beginner issues. After all, this certainly is a beginner's book. In fact, it's as good as the missing PowerPoint manual. If you want to go beyond the manual, check out the well explained Cutting Edge PowerPoint by Geetesh Bajaj. It makes a great complement to this book. And if you want to do more programming, check out Powerful PowerPoint for Educators by David Marcovitz. And for troubleshooting PowerPoint, look at Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances by Echo Swinford.

5 out of 5 stars Good book from start to finish.......2005-03-10

I really liked this book since it gives a very good overall features and how to's in adddition to advice on how to deliver a presentation in PowerPoint. With this book, you can create a very professional looking powerpoint presentation in an instant. Easy to navigate through the pages and sufficient amount of images to go along with the step by step instruction.

PowerPoint is a must these days for both college students and professional work and this book is a great buy and the price is right. Makes a good reference book.

5 out of 5 stars Great dollar value.......2003-11-03

I find "How to Do Everything with Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2000" a great dollar value. The lack of color between the covers is not a loss, especialy at the checkout counter. As a professional I use computer manuals as a quick resource to solve a particiluar problem. This book is well layed out for topical information and the index in not pretend. The index contains adequate sub-references to make it faster to track down solutions to specific questions. Chapter 1: Get Started With Presentations provides the novice to PowerPoint with the hand holding necessary to get up and going.

5 out of 5 stars You need this book........2003-09-14

This book makes it easy to look up the answers to my questions. It is a perfect book for a novice because the directions are so clear and it's great for me as I know lots but need some help in certain areas. I found that help easily. I love the cautions Ellen gives. For example, she gives a caution about being sure the hyperlink color shows up on the slide. All these pointers make it easy for me to help my clients. She's got call out boxes called tips, short-cuts, cautions, did you know's and how to's. There's an excellent chapter on creating charts. I use this as a reference for when my clients ask me questions as well as an update for what's new in PowerPoint 2003. You can only create more effective presentations using Ellen's clear descriptions and easy to follow pointers.
