Book Description
The swank apartment, the killer job, and the perfect boyfriend/girlfriend haven't yet fallen into place. Is this really adulthood? Welcome to life before the mortgage. Here's what you need to know.
Christina Amini and Rachel Hutton have brought together the very best writing on this unpredictable -- and often hilarious -- time. This book features essays by celebrated writers such as Joel Stein, Thisbe Nissen, Thomas Beller, Found magazine's Davy Rothbart, and ReadyMade's Shoshana Berger, as well as exciting new writers.
Customer Reviews:
interesting collection of stories.......2006-10-12
I enjoyed many of the stories which had a range of describing love, moving out, and quirky tid-bits of information.
You are not alone..........2006-07-01
What happens when you get a lot of struggling writers to tell you of their life just after college? Drama, tears and lots of laughs.
The toughest challenge faced by most twentysomethings is that period just after college. The process of discovering you really are an adult even though you still feel like a teenager can be as awkward as puberty and even lonlier.
Add to this the fact that for some reason many college grads are absolutely convinced that they are the only ones going through this transition and that everyone else already has a great job, great prospects and a great spouse, or at least a solid relationship. Truth is, nearly everyone goes through at least some time in this purgatory - where this engaging book steps in.
Stories covering everything from first jobs from Hell to cubicle humor to apartment woes let you know that not only are you not alone but your problems may actually be a bit funnier than you thought.
The Editors of this book have done a wonderful job putting this project together and I look forward to more great work from them in the future.
Best Anthology I've Read in a Long Time.......2006-05-26
I feel like I've been looking for this book ever since I graduated from college. Finally - short personal essays with true emotional heart and a real appreciation for how absurd life can be. I would recommend this book to everyone, especially recent college grads, though everyone will get get a kick out of it and be moved at the same time.
Entertaining, thought-provoking, and witty!.......2006-05-04
GREAT READ!
Finally, a book that tells me I'm not alone in the BTM world. The perfect gift for anyone venturing out into "The Real World" who doesn't watch a whole lot of MTV's "The Real World."
-A. Hoffman
A witty and endearing take on life.......2006-04-22
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. A fantastic grouping of anecdotes and essays, Before the Mortgage, not only entertains, but does so while articulating so many of the foibles we've all experienced to some degree in our 20's. I hope this is only the first of many compilations!

Book Description
An experienced teacher of the prophetic materials provides students with an accessible entrée into this fascinating aspect of Hebrew Bible studies. The author begins by asking five basic questions about Israelite prophecy and the prophetic books. Do the prophetic books witness to a real phenomenon of prophecy in Israel? What is the relationship of the "classical" or "writing" prophets to the "pre-classical" prophets? Where do we look for the origins of Israelite prophecy? How do the prophets relate to their culture and society? How does the prophetic collection of writings relate to the legal and historical traditions of Israel? Through literary, social, and theological analysis, he then introduces the most noted of the Hebrew prophets, with speical attention to Jeremiah.
Customer Reviews:
Great Background on the Prophets.......2005-12-19
I am a seminary student who had and might end up again having Dr. Hutton as an Old Testament Teacher at Trinity Lutheran Seminary. His book is a great read for those who want to go just under the surface in understanding the prophets of the Hebrew Scriptures. It is detailed just enough so it makes sense without being overwhelming. In the book, you will learn the different types of prophets which really shead light as to their function in their respective texts. Also, the book goes in great detail about the Book of Jeremiah. Reading the text itself is complicated but with Hutton's book makes the text make sense. Great book for laypeople and those entering the minsitry. For the record, I was not paid for making this comment.
Helpful little volume on the prophets!.......2005-07-09
Hutton has written a helpful little introduction to the prophets. He accepts the prophets as real persons even if filtered by the work of later editors. The author accepts many standard tenants of historical criticism. Such positions as the sign of Josiah (1 Kings 13) being a "fabricated story," (34) and Isaiah's angel of the Lord an embellishment of a historical account show his anti-supernatural bias. Hutton continues to propagate the false dichotomy between oracles of judgment as marks of a true prophet and oracles of hope as indications of later additions. The primary message of each book rather than its structure or genre is the emphasis of the author's treatment and Hutton often provides helpful insights in his discussion. For example, his comment on Micah and preaching (verb nataf) is a nice summary. All in all the book is a nice read and would be quite helpful to any seeking an overview of the Old Testament prophetic books. It is especially recommended as a complement to some of the longer introductions.

Book Description
From Wales comes this tale of young Huw, whose lilting harp music enchants Tylwyth Teg, the magic people of Bearded Lake.
From the depths of the black lake comes the gift of a beautiful silver cow; and the cow is magic, for its milk is three times as rich as the milk of an ordinary cow, and she gives three times as much.
Huw's father is a selfish and greedy man, and his wealth makes him greedier than ever. Huw tries to make his father see the magic, but he scoffs at Tylwyth Teg...until they seek their revenge.
Told with a rhythm that evokes the Welsh language, Susan Cooper has brought new life to this ancient tale. Warwick Hutton's evocative illustrations capture the magic of this fateful story.

charming.......2002-05-27
I have been reading this book to our grandchildren since our first grandchild was born - he is now 19 years of age(he was four or five when I bought the book). Our youngest is now two and a half years old. It's a fun book to read with the children and my way of letting them all know how thankful I am for each and every one. I highly recommend it to any Grandma out there.
Pleasing little book for nearly every grandmother to give.......2000-05-24
Charming illustrations of grandchildren interacting with their grandmother in common activities such as baking cookies, a zoo trip, talking on the phone, playing a game etc. Grandmothers and children of different ethic backgrounds are portrayed which broadens the scope of the book even further. Hugs and hand holding are pictured to enhance the overall feelings of love and caring. Every child would feel extra special receiving this little gem from a loving grandmother.

Dark Voyage with the US Coast Guard
"The rules state you have to go out. Nothing is written that states you have to come back." -The Coast Guard Sea Journal -
The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Cape Solace mysterious sinks while on patrol off coast of the Florida, taking 26 crewmembers to a deep water grave. At the same time, Coast Guard Intelligence Agent Brad Thomas surfaces from a deep cover sting operation in New York City netting two "Coasties" involved in smuggling for the Mob.
A Marine Board of Inquiry investigation yields no answers to the Cape Solace sinking, and the New York sting is covered up. What is happening to America's lifesavers, the "quiet service"?
That's what Agent Brad Thomas, his life destroyed by the sinking of a second Coast Guard cutter, sets out to discover on a deadly path of vengence and redemption that leads from gritty Miami Streets to the innermost corridors of power in Washington.
There has never been a book like this before about the Coast Guard, written by one who was there in a critical time as a spy within the service.
Customer Reviews:
I don't know what Coast Guard the author served in........2002-03-27
It is hard to believe that the author was ever in the Coast Guard. He has created a story while decent has no basis in how the Coast Guard actually operates. I have been a Coastie since 1991 and it was almost painful to read this due to the inaccuracies. If you aren't a coastie, please don't view this as an accuarate view on how the Coast Guard operates.
A Fairly Good Book.......2002-03-06
This is a book about sevral US Coast Guard Intellingence officer who uncover an ill-legal operation within the Coast Guard. This book starts with the mysterious sinking of one of the Coast Guards Cutters, and when it is invistigated, thier is a lot of suspesion. It takes the setting to sevral diffrent parts of the US, and deals with the point of views of sevral charaecters, both good and bad. I would recomend this book to anyone who knows some things about the Coast Guard, or would like to know about it. Even though there are some slow parts to this book, there are still many exciting parts to it, and it's a fairly good book.
Technical advisor needed.......2001-06-14
As has been mentioned at length the amount of innaccuracies and errors in this fictional work about the U.S. Coast Guard are a major detractor to this book. Mr. Hutton can obviously write, and pieces together an interesting story, but that can't overcome all the errors in this book. Colors at 0630 and the mention of "Charlie Gulf" (Golf). Maybe non-CG folks might enjoy this offering, but if you are a Coastie you may want to stay away.
Treachery in Our Smallest Service.......2000-08-07
A DEEP BLUE SOUNDING: A Dark Voyage With the U.S.Coast Guard By Donald B. Hutton Since the Don Winslow of the Coast Guard series of the 1940's there has been no significant adventure novel centering around the activities of the U.S. Coast Guard. Only a Coastie could author one and Don Hutton a Coast Guard veteran has done just that. The book establishes the mystery of the sinking of the fictional CGC Cape Solace in the very beginning and takes us through 169 well written pages of high adventure, treachery, and murder on the high seas. You are advised to start the book early in the evening as you will have trouble putting it down before you retire. The only distraction in the book is a few technical inaccuracies but after all this is a work of fiction - I hope!8/6/2000 Reviewed by Jack A. Eckert LCDR, USCG (retired)
"A Deep Blue Sounding" makes GREAT SUMMER READING!.......2000-08-01
I picked this book for a summertime read and got a great one! Once I hit the author's stride, I found that the story shot like a torpedo (pardon the pun) aimed straight at the Congress and the various adminstrations that have allowed the Coast Guard to languish in the backwaters of Washington politics. As a turning 50 Baby Boomer, and like alot of my generation, I missed the service but still respect it and those who served. I'm not a Coastie, nor a member of any service, so I didn't catch what some knowledgeable insiders consider inaccuracies. What came through was an riveting story that shed needed light on a branch of the service that heretofore has gotten little mention.
This was an entertaining read and an enlightening piece of fiction. As I recall the books that I read in the summer of 2000, I'll look back on this one and think it was time well spent.

Book Description
Joseph Cotten’s story begins in Tidewater, Virginia, moves on to an episode as a Miami ‘potato salad’ tycoon and then brings us to his first big break as an actor, in the New York theatre. Cotten describes how he met the flamboyant Orson Welles- at a radio audition at which Welles set a wastepaper basket on fire- and their involvement with the Mercury theatre. This led to Cotten’s first film role, as Orson’s co-star in Citizen Kane, quickly followed by parts in The Magnificent Ambersons and The Third Man. Orson- perhaps the only man to use Churchill as a stooge while trying to set up a film deal- was a lifelong friend of Cotten’s, and this autobiography was one of the last works he read before his untimely death in 1985.
Cotten takes us behind the scenes of his stage plays and films, recalling amusing and intimate stories of his adventures with Ingrid Bergman, Marilyn Monroe, Katharine Hepburn, David Niven, David O. Selznick, Alfred Hitchcock and many others.
Sensitive to his own motivations, frank about his marriages and warmly revealing about himself and his friends, Cotten has written much more than the usual film star biography. His skills as an actor have made him a master of character and dramatic momentum, and he brings the same talents to his writing. Vanity Will get You Somewhere is a generous, loving and humorous portrait of a man without a shred of vanity in his nature- and of his friends and colleagues in the larger-than-life world of show business.
Customer Reviews:
Not as good as I once thought but still a fun read........2007-04-03
I bought the hardback version of this book when it was first published in 1987, and I still have that copy. I was at the time a big fan of Joseph Cotten's films, and I still believe he was one of the best, most natural actors of the 1940s and 1950s. Of course, his career took him from stage to radio, from film to television and back to film, and if you take the time to look at his filmography you see him starring with some of the most famous movie stars of the twentieth century. He certainly was underrated, but I think that as you read his autobiography you'll see that he was an extremely humble man who truly enjoyed his life and was a dedicated husband as well.
His autobiography falls into two parts, from the beginning of his life to the death of his first wife, and then from the time he meets his second wife, Patricia Medina, to his recollections of a serious stroke.
If you are interested in Joseph Cotten and the loving relationship he had with Patricia Medina, you really need to read her own autobiography, entitled Laid Back in Hollywood: Remembering, and available second-hand on Amazon.com. It tells the story of her life up to the time that Joseph Cotten died, and I was moved by how much they loved one another. It is very inspiring.
Looking at both books together it does seem that Patricia Medina helped Joseph Cotten edit his own book, because she has a wacky sense of humor that comes through in both her book and the second half of Vanity Will Get You Somewhere. The other thing I noticed about this book when I revisited it was that it is somewhat sparse in some details, and other things are written about with great detail. I think the first half is actually better written.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Joseph Cotten, any of the films he made, or to read about what it was like to be a movie star during Hollywood's glamorous heyday. It was also fun to read about Joseph Cotten's many travels. I remember visiting Venice for the first time and excitedly going to Harry's Bar because I read about it in Cotten's book.
A Must Read.......2000-10-05
This was one of the best autobiographies I have ever read! For any Joseph Cotten fan or classic movie fan it is a must. Joseph Cotten reveals everything from life as a child in VA to college to becoming a star, and all of the relationships he made along the way. I picked the book up once and didn't put it down until I had read every word.
Customer Reviews:
Don't Touch that Dial.......2007-01-23
I cannot understand the sort of reviewers who rush to point out tiny omissions in otherwise exhaustive studies, particularly in the area of popular culture. Some of them apparently are actually paid to do so, and in my view they have watched too much Watergate and Sixty Minutes. For example, Ira Gallen dug up all the old commercials he showed on his retro New York TV show; contrary to the general view, advertisers didn't keep the reels after the commercials ran, and in compiling his collections, Gallen was plowing new territory. Relative to, say, dinosaurs, radio and TV have only been with us for a short while and it's all been about making it up as you go along.
That TV broadcasting began as local programming, and then mostly in New York, is extremely significant but often overlooked by those looking backwards with modern lenses. Shows were owned by ad agencies and developed for sponsors, not networks. Jay Ward's Crusader Rabbit and cliff-hangers like Col. Bleep and Clutch Cargo were the only early TV cartoons before the syndication of Looney Tunes, Merrie Melodies and Terrytoons and the entrance of William Hanna and Joe Barbera into TV 'toons with Ruff and Reddy.
Early TV carried over from radio and the triple reel style of the moviehouse, which would generally show a cartoon or short and newsreel along with the featured films. Live hosts were expected to pitch and endorse the sponsor's product and, whether clown, cowboy or cosmic captain, to intersperse the performance and patter with cartoons. The demise of the live host came when the few bad apples began to hold the studios for ransom. Execs soon realized they could order cartoons by the foot to fill the programming blocks. Eventually the insatiable appetite for cartoons ballooned Hanna- Barbera into a behemoth cartoon factory with shows running on all three networks, with a bust following that boom and a decline in quality in the 'seventies and 'eighties, only to be regained after the success of Who Framed Roger Rabbit and the cartoon renaissance of the 'nineties.
TV now is like wallpaper that viewers can change at whim, and animation so ubiquitous, good, bad and ugly, viewed as it is as fodder for kids, or more recently, as an "extreme" way to jazz up overdone to death "adult" programming, that its freshness is nearly gone. The current audience expectation of endless entertainment served up in spoon-sized doses masks for instance, the amount of homework done by Paul Reubens in reviving for Pee-Wee's Playhouse the local feel of live host TV.
Opening with a brief history, Hollis follows with a discussion of shows in every state of the union. Bits may be missing, but the hosts I remember from growing up in Seattle-- J. P. Patches and Stan Boreson-- were among those present. More fascinating is reading about the hosts I didn't see, which cartoons they had in common and the like. Travel back, then, to the days of its inception, when local TV was the only game in town, with live hosts who cared about kids (and some who didn't) making it up as they went along.
Finally Local Kids TV Has A Voice!.......2003-10-19
Very few tv history books have looked at Local Kids shows as an important part of the genre'.Until now,Birmingham,Al.based kids tv historian:Tim Hollis takes a look at this forgoten aspect of tv history. In his second book:"Hi There!:Boys & Girls!".He covers the history of the many children's programs that have entertained and informed young viewers on many tv stations all over this country.
The book looks at the humble beginngs of kids programs from the latter days of radio. To the period before and following
WWII,when tv broadcasts were limited to the early evening hours.
To the first kids shows that were broadcast during the mid to late 1940's and then into the vintage period of local kids shows:The 1950's into the 1960's.
The story continues into the 1970's.As Mr.Hollis looks at the decline of local kids tv(Which was caused by three factions:The introduction of reruns of cartoons and filmed puppet adventure shows from overseas.Which took over the local
live kids shows timeslots, the complaints from parential pressure
groups and from station execs about certain kids tv comedy performers.Who objected to the humor that these biased censors felt were unacceptable to the young viewers and forced the per-
formers off the air and finally. The ruling by Peggy Charren's ACT and other censor groups to force broadcasters to stop using
their local kids tv hosts/performers from promoting questionable
sponsors on their shows and to create, produce and air educational kids tv shows to the speifications of the tv censors).
Some tv stations were able to weather the storm caused by
Mrs.Charren's ACT and continue to create, produce and air fun kids tv shows:WNEW TV Ch.5 continued to present The Bob McCallister Version of"Wonderama"well into the late 1970's,Chief
Traynor Halftown hosted a Saturday morning version of his popular musical/variety kids show on WFIL TV Ch.6 in Philly,Pa. right up to the end of the 20th century and WGN TV Ch.9 Chicago,
Ill.'s"Bozo Show"remained on the air until the circus closed down for good in the summer of 2001.
The era attempted a comeback in the 1980's with the de-
regulation by The Regan admin.Which allowed Broadcasters to do their own tv shows without any interference from the US Government and from Mrs.Charren.
Some kid tv performers of the past:Chuck McCann,"Casey Jones"(Roger Awsumb) and "Cousin Cliff"Holman were able to make a successful comeback during this time.
While "Hi There!:Boys & Girls"doesn't recall all of the local kids tv shows of the past.It does look back at the programs that were popular with many young people from all over the USA and takes a look at the creation, development and the
successful rapport that these many talented, creative and caring
performers and personalities had with their loyal fans and

great book-excellent information-very fun to read!!.......2003-06-09
This book was so much fun to read! I can't believe all the info Hollis was able to uncover. His passion for the subject of kids shows is obvious, as is his excellent and humorous writing style. The book is a must for every 'kid' over the age of 35 who grew up watching TV. All of us can find a pleasant memory or two here. It's fascinating to read about the origins of these shows, and sadly, their demise. There is something here for either the nostalgia or history buff.
First, You Visit Your Own Local Stations..........2002-09-29
Tim has truly done a tremendous amount of homework putting together this walk down memory lane (three years' worth).Sure, not every station is mentioned; however, I am impressed by the histories, reviews and interviews he has amassed. You, the buying public have already read a couple of stories of some hometown TV personalities that went on to more fame. One sidekick, dressed as a clown, from my original hometown's affiliate, later went on to become a successful announcer on many game shows, including a short hosting job of two game shows. (Ah, ah, ah, you'll have to buy the book to find out who it is!)As the author wrote on this announcer/host, "Perhaps being a clown was good training for such a show."Well done, Tim! We hope you'll continue adding more information on more editions, as they become available. Most of today's youngsters really missed out on wonderful, quality childrens' programming, mentioned in this book, and were not videotaped...it is a part of our lives we shouldn't forget!
Remember growing up in front of the T.V.?.......2002-03-24
This is one great nostalgia book! It is incredible the flood of memories that this volume brings back. Remember the hundreds of hours that you spent watching the local kid's show on T.V.? Well, I can almost guarantee that this book will open the floodgates of long negected memories- so much in my own life was linked to the time I spent watching these shows. The author really did his research, there are obscure local shows that you never hear mentioned anywhere else. In my own case it was Roddy Mac in Rockford, and Captain Vern and his Cartoon Showboat in the Quad Cities. It seems that practically no documentation, let alone tape, remains of these local shows because they were just locally produced "time fillers." Then there is the mention of the old shorts and cartoons that you forgot about (remember Roger Ramjet, Funny Company, Space Angel, or Clutch Cargo?)

Very Informative.......2004-11-20
This is a great guide. Not too many pages, but tells you just about everything there is to know about this game. All the missions are explained and all the choices you make too. I found this very helpful since I could make a choice and then go back to the guide to see whether it was worth replaying the game with a different choice or whether the experience would not be altered very much. This guide also explains a bunch of stuff the manual does not talk about.
This guide is also great for players who have not played Deus Ex 1 and still want to enjoy the story.

Nice book for IE undergraduate level.......2003-08-19
This book is a nice book for introduction to manufacturing system for undergraduate level for industrial engineer. The book covers Forecasting, Aggregate Planning, Inventory control (certain and stochastic demand), Push vs. Pll Production Control Systems, Scheduling, Facility Layout, Facility Location, Quality control and Reliability. In Forecasting chapter, the book provides a lot of good basic forecasting methods such as moving average, exponential smooting, trend-based method, and seasonal series. In Aggregate Planning chapter, the book covers just the basic concepts and models which can be done better. For inventory control chapters, the book does a nice job and cover a lot of detailed basic models which is a good introduction. In the Production Control Systems chapter, this book also has done a nice job in covering detailed basic ideas of the MRP subject such as lot sizing methods in MRP but JIT section could be done better by adding some more detaile on key factors of JIT's success and the use of time buffer instead of inventory buffer. In Scheduling chapters, the book covers a very basic models for scheduling which is again good for introduction. The rest sections of the book are nicely written with the level of introduction. Overall, this book is good and nice to have. One comment on the cover page is that the formulation for EOQ is very wrong and should not happen for the book on manufacturing system.
Very clear, concise introduction into Operations Management.......2000-04-15
This is an excellent book for Operations Management electives at an MBA level or an introductory text for Operations majors at graduate school (both business and engineering). The book is self-contained and all the chapters can be studied independently. All the basics of the classical Operations Management are covered.
Estupendo!.......2000-03-29
Lo he usado para cursos de administracion (licenciatura y posgrado)y de ingenieria industrial. Resulta muy apropiado para ambos tipos de cursos. Existe version en espanol.
Definitly one of the best books about operation management.......1997-07-14
The book provides an easy introduction to the
complex area of production and operation analysis.
Nevertheless the relevant instruments
and solutions in production and operation analysis are covered and the big picture of
dealing with production and operations is shown
clearly.
The clear language, the illustrations and the examples make it a book best suitable for education and self-study.
