Book Description
Pete reflects on his life with beer, and shares everything he knows about beer and brewing. Written for the average person who doesn't know everything about beer, but would love to ask.
Customer Reviews:
Pete, Keep your day job!.......1999-01-24
Pete Slosberg is a great brewer. His ales are tasty and his ideas on changing the face of brewing in america are legendary. On the down side, Pete is not a writer. Beer for Pete's Sake covers the spectrum of beer today, but just barely scratches the surface of any subject. If you really want to read this book my recomendation is, wait for the paperback.
I liked this book. A must for beer aficianados........1999-01-22
I just finished this book and thought it deserved plugging for a couple of reasons. First, even though this book was clearly not intended as a "how-to" treatise, it has THE BEST introductory overview of the brewing process and, more importantly, the various factors involved in brewing and how they affect the final product that I have yet read, surpassing every homebrew how-to book in this important regard. These other books tend to either be too general or too detailed in addressing these issues, so that the most basic general principles the reader needs to appreciate to understand brewing can often get lost, but Pete nails most of them dead-on in his brief coverage of the matter. For this portion of the book he deserves at least a FOUR-star rating. The rest of the book is fun and informative without going into too much detail for the sake of detail, a common failing of many beer books, making for a quick and lighthearted read. His interest in beer lore has enabled him to bring together many anecdotes concerning beer in a single volume which one would probably have to look all over the place to find. The book concludes with a comprehensive bibliography which was interesting to read in and of itself. In fact, I was so impressed with the book and so dissapointed that is ended as soon as it did that I am going to write Pete and ask him to recommend some particular titles for further reading enjoyment.
I would rate this book overall at FOUR Stars and intend to seek an autographed copy to add to my collection.
A fun book that tells you everything about beer.......1998-08-22
This is a great book for everyone to read. Even a nonbeer drinker will find the stories and information interesting. It was also a fun book and an easy way to learn about beer.
Recommended for beer geeks only........1998-05-15
Pete Slosberg, the "Pete" of Pete's Wicked Ale, started as a homebrewer and became a craft or "micro" brewer. This biography starts well, but ends up chatty and full of self-congratulatory anecdotes. Slosberg has a good discussion of beer types and why brewers shouldn't worry too much about what category their beer is in. Not much useful information on the business side of craft brewing. Slosberg repeats a number of stories about beer origins and phrases, most of them reprinted in other books. Definitely recommended for brewing aficionados.
Book Description
Despiteor perhaps because ofits immense popularity, the NFL remains one of the most secretive sports in America. John Feinstein goes behind the scenes of this closed sport as he takes his readers through an NFL seasonall the ups and downs, the procession from 100 degree heat in training camp to frigid cold in January, and the week-to-week pressures faced by the coaches and playersin an incredibly illuminating and entertaining look at the most lucrative sport in America. NEXT MAN UP highlights the Baltimore Ravens, one of the most watched and dramatic NFL teams in recent years. Like many teams, the Ravens have faced extreme obstaclesin their case, players in prison, under indictment, and injuredbut theyve still managed to play at an extremely high level, winning their first Super Bowl in 2001 against the New York Giants. From the first strategy sessions of a new season to the last down of the final game, John Feinstein reveals the intensity, spirituality, and near life-or-death drama of professional football as its never been revealed before.
Customer Reviews:
See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil.......2007-05-24
WebViking writes a wonderful review of this book. I really agree with his part that says what is missing from the book, you really get a very limited feel of the players and the administrative people.
What really bothered me about halfway through the book is the way Feinstein fawns over the people he is covering. Brian Billick is not arrogant, just misunderstood. Ray Lewis should be deified as the greatest middle linebacker to play the game. Feinstein repeatedly defends Ray Lewis and Jamal Lewis from the legal problems they had.
But Feinstein makes a big error with Ray Lewis. Ray went on public record saying he was a terrible 3-4 linebacker. Others said similar, that Lewis was only a star in a 4-3. The 3-4 was the defense that the Ravens played in this book. So it is apparent that Feinstein spent little time with Lewis despite the fawning.
Feinstein appears frequently on TV where he shows he can do something beyond kissing up to the people he covers. He needs to put some of that into his future books, it was sorely needed in this one.
Behind the Scenes with the Baltimore Ravens.......2007-04-12
Take the media out of the picture of your favorite NFL team. This book delves into the background of the Baltimore Ravens. Even if you're not a Raven fan, you'll gain insight into your own team.
what's your favorite team doing in the off season?.......2007-03-06
It was interesting living the life behind the nfl media wall. I look back at what I was hearing from the media on the outside during this time. Now I am curious, knowing what I do now, what is going on behind the scenes with my favorite team, compared to what I hear from the local media.
Great Insights for the Recreational Football Fan.......2007-03-06
I watch football every Sunday, college and pros, and so I'm a loyal fan but probably not hardcore. This book's inside view was intriguing. John Feinstein provides an inside look into a year in football following one team. I'm not a Raven's fan, but I much preferred going behind the scenes of one NFL team, learning much about the culture and pressures of professional sports. These elite athletes make great sacrifices both to their bodies and dreams. Coaches are under tremendous pressure and no job security. By the end of the book, I had a much higher respect for those who play and coach football, and for the Ravens.
John Feinstein does tend to do a lot of 2 pg bios of players and coaches that I'd preferred if he'd done less. But that was less the quality of the bios, as they do have a purpose of providing context to situations, then my excitement to stay within the main storyline--the football season and a team. Well worth reading. Sports fans will not be disappointed.
Pretty good account of typical NFL season.......2007-02-14
This book is a pretty well written account of the behind-the-scenes happenings of a typical NFL team--in this case, the 2004 Baltimore Ravens. I thought it depicted the brutality, competition and strategizing very well. I only wish that there this book had been un-authorized. Certainly a lot of the language is captured, but Feinstein softens it up a bit to make the book more presentable to his audience and I'm sure to avoid making the football folks look like rogues.
Additionally, I think we could have had a little more detail on how the game plans are put together, how injuries are treated, what the play calls sound like from the sideline, etc. Having said that, I really enjoyed the notes on players like Chris McAlister and B.J. Sams.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful but wish it were updated.......2001-12-26
I have this book -left over from when my daughter was a baby (born in 1980). I used it for her with very good results and much enjoyed the recipes and ideas. But now when planning my little granddaughter's meals we have a few questions. Many of the recommendations in this book (whole milk from 6 months as a food, chicken liver from 4 months, etc.) are very much not recommended in general by experts today. I wish there were an updated version.
A Great Guide for Feeding your Child.......1997-10-09
As a new mother venturing into the unknown land of Feeding My Child, Part II (the very scary Part I being "Breastfeeding:You and Your Stretch Marks") I was so glad to finally find a book about this delicate subject! No Nonsense Nutrition For Your Baby's First Year is easy to read, follow and understand. When you are as tired as I am, these are very important criteria in a book. The authors have provided menus, dos, don'ts, it wont kill thems, and much more. Seriously, having a child and being completely in charge of their food intact is serious business and these ladies make it easy!

Book Description
Raven's Rants started out in November 1997 as just another personal poetry home page. However, it quickly grew into one of the largest and best-known dark poetry sites on the Internet achieving both a large, dedicated following and a place in countless academic papers, including several doctoral dissertations. With it's themes of love, heartbreak, and coming of age in today's world, Raven's Rants has drawn readers in from over 200 countries.
Now the works of Raven's Rants are available in a print collection. The entire first five years of the site's history, including all of the poetry, rants and most of the short stories, are presented here, reedited, revised and revamped for the print medium. You're invited to explore the Internet phenomenon that's been turning heads for the past half decade and let yourself in on the Internet's worst kept secret. ItÂ's waiting for you within these pagesÂ
Reader Opinions
ÂThe emotions and issues Raven presents and discusses are some of the most thought provoking I have ever happened upon. - M. K. Strickland
ÂIt was like I was reading something that had sprung up in my own mind, almost in my own exact words. - Trevor Gerard
Customer Reviews:
Yikes!!! This is awful juvenaila........2006-07-03
I can't believe the reviews I'm reading. This...this is what passes as good poetry? It's not poetry but rather some arrogant, self-glorifying, shallow junior-high kid's diary. "Dear Diary, Raven is sad. So sad. Um....and dark. Yeah, that's it. I'm really, really, really, dark. So sad and dark. I'm so sensitive that life affects me more than it does other people. They just can't understand what deep, sensitive people like me and my readers go through..." Good God, save me from this shallow, poorly written drivel. How can you reviewers really read serious living poets like Paul Muldoon, Christian Bok, Seamus Heany, Billy Collins, Alicia Ostriker, C. K. Williams, and so many others who are really producing work that illuminates and transcends and still call at this confessional tripe by the sacred name of poetry. I'm just dumbfounded. I can actually feel the intelligence being sucked out of my brain as read a Raven "poem" featured on the website about being "haunted" by memories of an ex. Hideously clunky, devoid of anything new, entirely confessional and specific to the author. It is as if it were written by a high school freshman.
Power and Pride.......2004-12-04
I have not actually read Ravens book but i go to his site at least once a week. His work is amazing and truly accompanied by depth. They are beautifully mastered peices and are told in raw human emotion. If ever i was a writer i would wish to be that of the pride and power Raven has in his pen. His site is truly applauded by myself and many others and sorry to say Mr Olsen but you don't know what your on about. It may take a certain perspective to see the beauty in Ravens work and you obviously don't have that perspective. I pray to whatever god you follow that you will one day get it and be able to enjoy the powerful writings of Raven.
Greetings.......2004-06-29
I have read every piece of work that Raven has written on his site, and yet it is the same every time. He expresses his emotions in ways that we can all relate to. He is a very smart person. I know one thing is for cretin he is a great writer.
I Guess You're A Ferret, Mr. Olson.......2004-06-10
Maybe, Mr. Olson, you don't realize that poetry isn't always a rhyme and meter pattern. Well, I'm here to enlighten you. Raven is a wonderful poet, filled with raw emotion that pours out of his well arranged words. I do, however, agree with a SINGLE thing you said. He is not comparable to Poe. Poe and Raven are worlds apart in time and power. Each of them has their own way with words and each uses them to their advantage. Props to Raven for a wonderful book.
Beautiful novel from a beautiful person........2004-05-11
First, Raven isn't a world famous poet. I have read his whole book and it was excelent. I don't know why Trent said this book was terrible, but it wasn't. I'm sure Raven doesn't mind the negative reviews, but i do because this wasn't a bad book. Raven is as such a great poet as "Egar Alan Poe" is. I have read both and i am indeed impressed with both poets not just one. Raven, I irrevocably say that your a great poet. Subdue the brutish humanity of people and persist with your beautiful words that have inspired me greatly.

From the supplier: St. Paul Reinsurance Management Corp CEO James Duffy is predicting that St Paul Re will be profitable in 1996. Duffy also is optimistic that the entire domestic reinsurance market will move into the black in 1996. Market fundamentals seem to contradict Duffy's optimism. Return-on-equity for domestic reinsurers declined by 6.3% in 1994, and the 9.6% rate of return on the top 20 property-casualty insurance companies was 1.6% lower than the average for non-insurance industry groups. Reinsurers' 9.1% rate of return was lower than the 11% rate of return of primary property-casualty insurance companies.

Confusing Mishmash.......2003-07-26
This book appears to have a lot of helpful information in it, but there are a lot of gaps. It takes a subject and touches the tip of every iceberg, but leaves way too much information out and assumes way too much knowledge on the user's part. The photos of the projects are horrid; just barely ledgible and convey no real information about what each step is trying to accomplish. The section on superimpostion is a hash of jargon and half formed concepts. Useful if you can get it cheap, but otherwise save your dough.
Don't buy this.......2002-12-12
I bought this book out of desperate at a neighborhood book store, and found out it was no more than the User Guide came with the application. Invest your money for something else.
Sloppy Stuff- Not For Beginners.......2002-11-18
I'm new to Premiere so I thought this book looks rather promising.
I have to admit I haven't read the whole book. I'm still stuck at chapter 1 ('Premiere Quickstart'), and that's because the steps given are not entirely in sequence, some important labels in the diagram are missing (where's the thread area you're talking about?), and things work out differently than described.
In summary, this book (at least the first chapter) is a sloppy piece of work. Don't touch it if you're a beginner.
Well done.......2002-09-08
Firstly, a little about myself so you can gauge how useful this review is to you; I'm new to video editing. I'm new to Adobe Premiere and I'm absolutely frustrated with other applications like Ulead VideoStudio 6 because it isn't flexible enough for me. I haven't had the pleasure of using real-time editing facilities...yet.
After having looked at the manual and then the Classroom-in-a-book series, I think this book fit the bill quite well. It explained how to perform tasks, why the tasks were performed in a particular way, alternatives to how a task could be performed and even gives ideas on how the tasks could be used in a production with sample projects.
I actually found the reading much easier going than trying to wade through Adobe's manuals. However, having said that, the book isn't light reading either. I used it by going through the book with Premiere running. Sometimes, I would skip ahead because something caught my eye.
If you have only got the manuals to go by, pick up this book written by an experienced Premiere user willing to share those experiences.
Everything I needed.......2002-04-23
Maybe some of thew other reviewers were expecting too much from this -- I dunno. For me, this Bible lived up to its name and provided me with everything I needed. I actually thought there was a lot of stuff in here that was original and definitely not included or addressed with the Adobe user's manual. The use of real-world videos, the regular presentation of alternatives for doing things, and the info on using Premiere with other software added way more depth than what was available from Adobe. My only criticism is that some of the screen shots are too dark.

Customer Reviews:
Synopsis.......2007-07-11
Smyslov launched his first bid for the supreme title in the 1948 match tournament - coming second to Botvinnik. Eventually, after two victories in Candidates contests and a drawn match with Botvinnik, Smyslov overcame his great and perennial rival to become World Champion in 1957 while still in his mid 30's. Smyslov's games are complex. Outwardly a serene strategist and undoubtedly a genius of the endgame, closer examination reveals Smyslov to be a fierce seeker after the initiative, paradoxically especially with black. The games and results in this volume have been bettered by very few in the history of competitive chess and it is particularly instructive to hear Smyslov's own voice guiding the reader.
The impeccable translation is by Russian expert Peter Clarke, himself author of volumes on Tal and Petrosian. Originally published as My Best Games of Chess - 1935-1957. Now published with corrections. Vassily Smyslov was the victor of the two World Championship Candidates Tournaments of 1953 and 1956, and went on to capture the World Title from Botvinnik in 1957. A genius of practical strategy and filigree endgame play, Smyslov was also a miracle of chess board longevity, reaching the final of the 1984 World Title Candidates qualifier against Kasparov at the age of 63 - exactly three times the age of his opponent! Smyslov's three titanic battles with Botvinnik for the world crown furnished the key creative impulses for the dominant chess style of the 1950's.
Book Description
The definitive resource for installing, managing, and supporting Windows XP Professional-with in-depth technical information and tools from the Microsoft Windows team. Includes new coverage of Windows XP Service Pack 2 and updated security features.
Customer Reviews:
Great reference book.......2006-03-13
It covers a lot of tools and solution to problems that I didn't know about, but it still can't replace Microsoft's knowledge base.
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Resource Kit.......2006-02-24
This book is amazing for learning Windows xp Professional. Even though I have a different version of XP it helped with tweaking the computer's graphics and multimedia. It is good book if you are staying at home on a rainy day and want to tinker with your pc. The book is thorough and covers installation to troubleshooting. I haven't read all of it yet because it is like a encyclopedia but from what I have seen it has a lot to offer a newbie or someone who is more advanced.
It is useful, but...........2005-12-15
The book is a good reference, but I find it a bit more than needed for a beginer, while less than an admin would want. The tools are very helpful as well.
I do not own the book mainly because the majority of it is available online at Microsoft's website. You can save yourself a good sum of money getting the info there.
Whatever happened to Supplements?.......2005-09-19
Am I the only one that remembers when instead of re-issuing the entire RSK any time a service pack was released that significantly changed the OS, a supplement to the primary RSK was sold? This supplement being much smaller, *cheaper*, and used in conjunction with the original release which still contained 90% valid and current information. Maybe someone will remember this when/if Microsoft releases XP SP3 and spare us from purchasing the entire XP RSK - a fourth time.
My rant now over, the newest edition maintains the usability and necessity of the RSK, amending the already well re-written, must-have second edition with changes introduced in XP SP1 and XP SP2. These additions include new sections on wireless networking, Windows Firewall and software deployment. There isn't a specific What's New listing anywhere, so if you are supporting a mix of Pre and Post XP SP2 desktops, you might consider keeping the RSK's second edition for a while to avoid any confusion.
XP Pro Resourse Kit 3rd Edition.......2005-08-06
Being new to MS XP Pro, I wanted something in hardcopy to fall back on and I found it in this book. I found it very helpful and useful. Yes, it may be more valuable to an IT person or network administrators but as a weekend PC warrior, I'm glad to have it on my reference shelf.
