      Book Description

Trader X has detailed his personal involvement in the business of futures and options trading. This is his personal story of where he came from, how he got to be a net profitable trader through his experience, and what he discovered about the true nature of the markets and reality as he has come to understand it. The book is written under the assumption that the reader has some knowledge or basic understanding of the markets. For the casual observer or reader who has no experience with the markets, the forward sets the stage for that person. The book contains additional explanations throughout to help the uninitiated follow along. For the serious student of the markets, or someone intimately involved in trading, the author believes he will fully understand this experience and find value he can apply to his own trading. The author makes it very clear this is not a "how to" book on trading.

5 out of 5 stars When you see that late night futures commercial..........2003-08-01

This is the guy on the other end. I have been a futures broker, investor, and I authored the book "Futures For Small Speculators". I have done all of this over the past 13 years and in that time I have seen some crazy events.

Unfortunately, I can attest to the fact that when I started out there were brokers that were drug addicts. But they were few or far between. I never saw anyone doing lines while speaking with a client. There were also other unscrupulous behavior. But I only saw this when I inadvertently fell into a "boiler room".

None of this behavior that Trader X discusses can be found in legitimate companies. It makes me wonder what kind of person was he for staying in that type of environment. I left the second week I was there when I saw brokers in the hallways shooting craps. How much more of a hint do you need to take that a particular place is not for you.

Trader X suffered from bad judgement and it reflected in his trading as well as in his decision to write this book anonymously. This is a very interesting treatise on trading. Only you can find the relevance for yourself.

      5 out of 5 stars A unique perspective.......2001-11-23

Reading this book is extremely worthwhile for the same reason Mark Douglas's books are; i.e. they relate more to being a more powerful and disciplined human being and then applying that to your chosen endeavor of trading, rather than rehashed things about cutting your losses and technical indicators. Succinctly put, it is about understanding things in terms of conflict, and knowing yourself and how you reach decisions in order to resolve those conflicts in the way where you become the winner....instead of reacting unconsciously.

The author looks at market action in a way I've never seen described anywhere else, and to me is very original though it is most applicable to futures markets than equity markets (though I'm starting to pay closer attention to open interest in options now).

5 out of 5 stars You are the Mirror.......2001-10-13

The cover is very telling. You are the mirror. When you look at the market is reflects off you. You are the market. Ponder these points:

I am nothing; yet I am everything.
I see nothing; yet I see everything.
I win with what is inside me; I lose with what is inside me.
I am the market; I always win.

This book contains kernels of truth. Ask yourself if you want to see the kernels of truth. Are you prepared to be a mirror?

3 out of 5 stars Oh so trading isn't easily done?.......2001-09-19

The writer basically shows his experience how trading is no piece of cake, and many are fooled into thinking it is. Most traders don't need to read a book like this after they have been trading for a few months.

He also "exposes" the brokerage industry as an industry filled with coke addicts and innept jobs. Supposedly these people would snort coke while on the lines with customers. Well, excuse me I have not had a job as a broker, but I find it hard to believe it is filled with coke addicts any more than, say, accountants.

All throughout the book while reading the revelations that trading is not easily mastered you must contend with a giant ego, and statements like, "when I was a loser, I had no idea what I was doing. Now, I am a winner, and I do the right things."

He also takes a story out of Charles Le Beau's book, an incident that happened in the sixties. I have no idea if he met the same person an identical individual or he is making that up too.

5 out of 5 stars the essential trader mindset.......2000-06-30

The concepts in this book will challenge current trader thought, and almost all books written about trading. If you really want to be a successful trader for the long haul, then this material will start that journey. You will appreciate it.

This printing of the classic BEST REMAINING SEATS: THE STORY OF THE GOLDEN AGE OF THE MOVIE PALACE (the review for which please see under that title) features updated captions for the b&w photos in this non-glossy paperback edition. Since some theatres have vanished since the first edition of 1961, the captions reflect the changes from that time through 1987 and better help the reader appreciate the rapidity of change. The new Preface for this reprint of the 1975 edition by the co-founder of the THEATRE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA, B. Andrew Corsini Fowler, places the book in an appreciative context and highlights the fact that the book is more than "an appropriate epitaph" of the movie palace, as forseen by the 1st edition's Foreward writer, since it helped focus the nation's attention on its fast-vanishing movie palace heritage. While this edition does not contain the color plates of the original, it does make available the fabulous prose of a truly gifted writer whose contagious enthusiasm will warm you heart to him and his beloved theatres as well as the many wonderful, eccentric people who dance through its pages. If theatres (and Movie Palaces in particular) could talk, they would shout the praises of the late Ben M. Hall whose unique style helped bring our theatres back to us. If you've ever wondered about the origins and the faded glamour of an old theatre, this book belongs on your book shelf, for you will return to it again whenever you pine for a sweeter time in gilded halls filled with the sounds of the unique Theatre Pipe Organ.

Unlike most other books featuring photographs of old movie palaces, Hall's was written before the rot and decay of the 1960s and beyond set in. The Loews Paradise is presented in much of its glory here, as are many other once-famous theaters like the Strand, the Roxy, etc. Hall also includes valuable insight not only of the creators of these now-vanished urban palaces but also of the common, anonymous people who worked there - the ushers, doormen, ticketbooth girls, etc. Hall's tone is genuinely enthusiastic and positive, and doesn't contain a trace of sarcasm, irony, kitsch, or postmodernism. I wish this book would be reissued, possibly in an expanded format (I could only find a battered copy at my local library).

5 out of 5 stars THE original PRIME work on Movie Palace Architecture/History.......1998-11-12

Theatres have taken many forms through the ages, but the American innovation of the "Movie Palace" theatre to originally showcase silent films, is perhaps the most delightful meeting of the arts under one roof. Mr. Hall spent years searching the nation for photos and history of these architectural wonders and his respect for and love of this architype is readily evident! His jocular style can seem irreverant, but he strives thereby to keep his delight from turning to awe. It is a shame his life ended Dec. 16, 1970 for the New York Times and the world lost a master wordsmith and researcher/writer. This lavishly illustrated volume is the appropriate 'epitaph' for this art form and its success is revealed in the three subsequent printings in soft cover (minus the color plates in this first edition) and in the fact that it indirectly led to the forming of two societies of afficianados: THE THEATRE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA,(publishers of MARQUEE magazine) and THE AMERICAN THEATRE ORGAN SOCIETY,(publishers of THEATRE ORGAN magazine) both in Elmhurst, Ill. Mr. Hall would have been proud of the preservation movement for theatres which arose partially as a result of his engaging 266-page book. Its potential social impact was forseen by "AMERICAN HERITAGE" magazine in October 1961 when they excerpted it complete with the color plates as "The Best REE-MAINING Seats". Other books have followed, but they owe a tip of the hat to him who took the lead so well. If this is the story of NYC's ROXY, the "Cathedral of the Motion Picture" and of entrepreneur Roxy Rothafel, he is the foreshadow of Ben M. Hall and a glimmering showcase of the dazzling 'architecture of fantasy' to come. Tour the nation in a new way and Enjoy!

Steven Poole's substantial examination of the world inside your console combines an exhaustive history of the games industry with a subtle look at what makes certain kinds of games more engaging than others. For example, what works in which genres--the RPG (role-playing game) versus the god game--and the relationship of video games to other forms of media.

A writer and composer, Poole makes the case that video games--like films and popular music--deserve serious critical treatment: "The inner life of video games--how they work--is bound up with the inner life of the player. And the player's response to a well-designed video game is in part the same sort of response he or she has to a film, or to a painting: it is an aesthetic one." Trigger Happy is packed with references not just to games and game history but also to writers and theorists who may never have played a video game in their lives, from Adorno and Benjamin to Plato. At times this approach verges on the pedantic, dwelling at length on points that will seem obvious to serious gamers ("We don't want absolutely real situations in video games. We can get that at home"; "The fighting game, like fighting itself, will always be popular"). Nonetheless, Poole's book may be favored bedside reading for both the keen gamer and the armchair philosopher looking to understand this cultural phenomenon. --Liz Bailey, Amazon.co.uk

                      Book Description

The Edge calls Trigger Happy a "seminal piece of work." For the first time ever, an aficionado with a knowledge of art, culture, and a real love of gaming takes a critical look at the future of our videogames, and compares their aesthetic and economic impact on society to that of film. Thirty years after the invention of the simplest of games, more videogames are played by adults than children. This revolutionary book is the first-ever academically worthy and deeply engaging critique of one of today's most popular forms of play: videogames are on track to supersede movies as the most innovative form of entertainment in the new century.

This book is not a list of dates and events, it is an insightful look into what videogames really are, and their paradoxes and parallels to the real world. I normally dislike reading books without a story, but I literally had trouble putting this down. "I should go to sleep... one more page... okay, lemme just finish this chapter." Buy it now.

3 out of 5 stars Nice... but where's the rest?.......2003-05-04

Poole has a good point to make, and he makes it in the first chapter (that gamers are not social outcasts and games are a form of storytelling every bit as viable as film or literature). Unfortunately, he has about fifty other half-points to make and never finishes a single one of them. He makes a huge deal out of gender (hello... women have made up a nice percentage of gamers since the Pac-Man days!), which seems really counterproductive. His memoir-like descriptions of E3 and its Tokyo equivalent are entertaining, and he is a gifted writer, but 'Trigger Happy' reads like a conversation with a friend who missed an entire generation of gaming.

                      3 out of 5 stars A bit more please........2003-02-12

                      February 11, 2003

I'm a game player, but nowhere near the enthusiast that
many young men (and women, says author Poole) have
become today. I don't own an expensive home system,
unless you count my computer, but I am old enough to
remember most of the video game revolution of the 70's.
I found `Trigger Happy' a little too dedicated to the
examination of form (and only a few sorts of forms at
                      that).

Some of Poole's conclusions about the psychology behind
game-playing and game-evolution are interesting, but others
are downright tedious. (The evolution and complex
significance of the power up?) More interesting areas are
available that he jumps over, unless a companion effort is
in the making. There should be more testimony here. From
gamers, addicts, designers, doctors, marketers, Hollywood,
                      you name it.

Video games are huge, will become more huge, and might
some day begin playing us, who knows? As a person with a
possible future endlessly jumping over flaming barrels, I'd
like something a little more substantial.

This book refers to the psychological impact of games, or rather, it tries to. Author Steven Poole even admits to not enjoying playing games, so what business does he have writing a book about them? Somewhat informative, but very dry. Print quality is also average--The pictures look as if they were photocopied in a convenience store.

                      3 out of 5 stars Doesn't go far enough.......2002-07-23

An intelligent, broad ranging discussion of videogames. Poole is right to regard videogames as a medium, and one that needs to be evaluated on its own terms instead of compared with books or movies. He brings in an intriguing array of references on art, semiotics, literary theory and other topics to the discussion, and his writing is accessible and smooth.

The flaw in this book is focussing too narrowly on twitch games, mostly the combat/exploration games like Tomb Raider or Metal Gear Solid. Poole can't be bothered with god-games like Populous or Sim-City or pure exploration-puzzle games like Myst, and says as much. He misses out on a huge realm of other styles of game and playing experience. This is a shame, because Poole looks like he has the intellectual chops to write a comprehensive book on this subject.

Pool is on to something in the last chapter, when he theorizes that the next frontier is making the player feel responsible for his decisions in the game world. You might feel bad when Aeris buys it in Final Fantasy VII, but it was in a cut scene so you don't feel responsible because it was beyond your control.

For the reasons Poole discusses earlier, this is hard to do in an adventure-style game. If a character dies in a cut scene, it isn't your fault. If she dies in gameplay, you just keep playing it through until she lives. (Kirk didn't accept the no-win situation; why should you?)

However, this is where his distaste for god-games trips him up. Players of Civilization or other management games don't have easy replay buttons. Anybody whose sim-city burns because they under-funded the fire department knows all about actions and consequences. We care about a place if we build it. We don't care about a place if we just wander around shooting things in it.

Also, instilling responsibility in games may be a dead end. Arguably, the whole point of play is to avoid responsibility. Play is a separate realm in which success or failure don't matter in the rest of world. Creating consequences for our actions in a game world would make it too much like work.

This may be why some people find on-line games so addictive. They become like work, instead of play, because there are consequences if you don't play hard enough. You can let down the other players, and your enemies can attack what you have created.

Poole doesn't write about on-line multi-player games, because they barely existed when he wrote this, only a couple of years ago. I think he could write another intriguing book on the subject, if he would just take his eyes off Lara Croft and take a walk through Riven.

crostics. The puzzles and instructions are easy to understand but require a bit of detective work in solving them. The book is different from anything else I've seen-it was certainly worth purchasing.Nancy Vanstone.

If you're a mystery fan and like to do puzzles, you'll love DETECTA-CROSTICS! A whole book of word puzzles featuring your favorite fiction genre is a delicious treat. When my copy of DETECTA-CROSTICS came in the mail I grabbed a pencil and didn't move from my chair for the next three hours.

The 39 puzzles are hybrid-mixes of mystery trivia quiz, acrostics, anagrams, and various other wordgames. Puzzle themes cover the mystery spectrum: Agatha Christie, spy mysteries, horse themes, medieval settings, lesser-known vintage writers, etc. The challenge level varies depending on how familiar you are with a particular sub-genre. Some questions about unfamiliar books can be answered through logic and your store of general knowledge. For others, the extensive explanations on the answer pages prove fascinating reading all by themselves.

If you aren't a puzzle person yourself, DETECTA-CROSTICS would make a wonderful gift for a puzzle-solving friend who is also a mystery fan.

This isn't your typical book about finances and budgeting. Mary Hunt and her family recovered from devastating debt in the '80s--a debt incurred secretly over years of using credit card after credit card, compounded by the spectacular failure of the business she started with her husband. There's a strong religious component to her beliefs about money and responsibility, but she comes across as upbeat and modest, rarely dogmatic (except about the evils of easy credit). She encourages openness about money problems, and there's a sense of genuine caring in her writing that eliminates the distance between her and the reader--a quality she's put to good use with her Cheapskate Monthly newsletter. This is one of the best books you can buy--regardless of your gender--about the financial pitfalls of modern life and how to climb out of them.

1 out of 5 stars Mary Hunt's INCREDIBLE, but this is her weakest book........2004-08-20

I'm a HUGE Mary Hunt fan... her cheapskate lifestyle and debt-proof way of life has completely turned my finances around for the best! I've read nearly all of her books and love them so much I am quick to buy many copies and give them to others... EXCEPT THIS ONE. As a feminist, I found this book enormously patronizing. I felt that when she generalized women's spending habits, she made grossly inaccurate assumptions like I don't understand how a credit card works. If you don't know how a credit card works, read this book! I do not recommend this book unless you are a woman completely clueless about money. If you consider yourself financially savvy and trying to gain more tools, go with "The Complete Cheapskate." If you're married and trying to get a debt-proofed life, go with "Debt-Proof Marriage..." "The Gourmet Cheapskate" is also incredible! I also highly recommend her cheapskatemonthly.com newsletter, but the books are better if you're trying to make a personal change in your life with your finances. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Help is here for the financially challenged!.......2000-01-26

I found this book to be extremely helpful and informative. Mary Hunt offers practical advice in a manner that makes you feel like you're listening to advice from a good friend or relative who has been through it all. She also made me feel like I wasn't a freak for having bad financial habits but that I needed to learn how to break them. For those of you out there who are compulsive spenders (like myself), this book is a great way to start getting on the right financial track.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, funny, encouraging help from one who's been there.......1996-08-29

Mary really gave me hope! I thought this was just for women but discovered what she had to say applied to both me AND my wife. This book is a real answer to prayer and has given us a great leap forward down the road to getting out of debt...once and for all! Waytago, Mary! Hope you sell a million copies! -RPR, Franklin, TN
