Titan: The Life of John D. Rockefeller, Sr.
ASIN: 0823215598
Release Date: 1994-01-01 |
Book Description
Many biographies of John D. Rockefeller and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. have been compiled- some have used bits of the original correspondence presented here and tried to show opposing interests between John D. Rockefeller and his son. Still others were written without correspondence at all. This collection of never-before-published letters traces the history of the transfer of the Rockefeller fortune over the course of fifty years. It illustrates how the endowment was bestowed from Senior to Junior with respect, sound advice, and with a mutual trust between father and son. The letters also reveal far more than the business side of entrusting the Rockefeller fortune to the younger generation. The misives are filled with news of family matters and personal wishes constituting a record of the Rockefeller family values which, in turn, sponsored the philantrophies of Junior. Outlined in these letters is the conception for the Rockefeller Foundation, the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, and the General Education Board. Later would follow the realization of the Fort Tryon Park, the Rockefeller Center, Riverside Church, and the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg. Junior's holdings peaked in 1928 at 5 million and his dedication to public parks, and institutions around the world absorbed a considerable portion of his wealth. Ernst's introduction reflects on five themes which run continuously throughout the letters: the respect and love among the members of the family, a father's precautions to his maturing son, the son's willingness to accept his father's precepts and examples, the son's conscious assumption of the responsibilities of the bequeathed fortune, and overriding faith in a benevolent God. These themes continually come together to form the outline of a philosophy of life behind the Rockefeller legacy, as when Senior writes: "I am indeed blessed beyond measure in having a son whom I can trust to do this most particular and most important work. Go carefully. Be conservative. Be sure you are right- and then do not be afraid to give out, as your heart prompts you, and as the Lord inspires you."

The Stunt 4-3 defense fell short this time... 2.5 to 3 stars.......2001-01-11
A book for any Michigan State Football fan who lived through the George Perles era. I was a student at MSU during George's era and liked him as a football coach and for what he brought to the University. In this book, I had hoped he was going to share his insight and perspectives on the games and the players he coached. What the book seemed to focused on was his battle with MSU administration and a calling to the NFL (Packers, and Jet).
The book starts by covering his early years growing up in Detroit and playing High School football. George then leaves the state of Michigan to play college football else where (can't let the cat out of the bag). He then finds himself in the Army surrounded by all his High School friends. The Book next focuses on his meeting with Duffy Daugherty and how that meeting affected his entire career... From his first coaching position to his days with the Steelers to MSU.. Book is good so far... Next we get into the mess with the administration and the downfall of the book.
I would recommend this book to any MSU grad or football fan (Steelers).... I would of given it a much higher rating if the book followed the teams he coached and the players

Why Docudrama?: Fact-Fiction on Film and TV
ASIN: 0240801954 |
Customer Reviews:
The ground zero of docudrama teaching.......2001-09-30
This is a wonderful and highly readable book, which does a superb job of opening up a fascinating but hithertofore totally unexplored area of film and television. A must for anyone interested in the relations between fiction, reality, and drama and wants to know how to enter this fast growing script field and how to write punchy and dynamic scenarios. Absolutely five stars.
Book Description
In the novel tradition of Black Dog's How to Stay Alive in the Woods (rubber cover) and How Things Are Made (denim cover), Patents is covered in bubble wrap, one of man's more ingenious creations. It includes dozens of notable patents, from the airplane, brassiere, chain saw, and fire hydrant to the Internet, parachute, plunger, and zipper. The purpose of each device is explained in accessible language, along with background about the inventor, interesting sidebars and history, and an excerpt from the original patent application. The artwork throughout includes photos of original models and patent diagrams created by the inventors themselves, annotated to show exactly how each item works.

Your Library Will Love It.......2005-02-06
While much of the information can easily be obtained online for free, this book puts the most interesting of that information in a form that anyone with a pulse (not in unity with the computer) can understand and learn from. Inaccuracies contained within are allowed because this isn't a book to use as a reference on a graduate thesis. The explanations of each invention are so quick and concise (about a page) and filled with humor and annicodtes and small selections from the inventor's actual patent language that it would be impossible to rely on any of it for real accuracy. The descriptions are just enough to wet one's interest. Then again, so are the descriptions in my UNCLE JOHN'S BATHROOM reader, which devotes a few pages to the same information. Why then do I love this book? The cover is cool, the page design and layout are very clean and easy to understand. Choice of graphics (patent drawings) are good (although the pictures attached to the ATM machine could use some work). Choice of inventions are interesting and so are each of their stories (from Velcro to the nuclear reactor). Even the very few pages of "resources" at the end of the book are informative and well layed out - quick description of the three types of patents, how one obtains a patent, and website links if one wanted to learn more. Perfect addition to any library, but first it goes on my coffee table because that's really where a book like this belongs (and not next the toilet). The bubble wrap cover makes up for its un-coffeetable-book size.
Somewhat entertaining, but contains inaccuracies.......2004-11-13
This book does highlight some interesting or important patents, but just upon skimming it, I noted several inaccuracies. One statement implied that the civil war and reconstruction was part of the reason for the patent act of 1836 (a good score and a half before the civil war), and another part of the book stated that the formula for coca-cola, the most famous trade secret in the world, was patented. These inaccuracies made me question the accuracy of the entire work. In addition, much of the information is available on the PTO's web site for free.
fun, interesting, educational, and fun.......2004-05-10
The first thing that attracts you to this book is its cover, which is half ensconced in a thin layer of a laminated cushioning material (also known as bubble wrap, Patent Number 3,142,599; July 28, 1964 granted to M. A. Chavannes of Brooklyn, for a method of making bubble wrap). This book celebrates a few of the 6.5 million patents that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted since Thomas Jefferson issued the first one in 1790. For each patent, Mr. Ikenson provides that patent name, number, date, the person granted the patent (not always the inventor) and the assignee of the patent, if necessary. These are followed by explanations and drawings about what the item does, how it works, and then a statement in the inventor's own words.
Included in this book are dynamite, the artificial heart, the airplane (wright), camera (wolcott), helicopter (sikorsky), cotton gin (whitney, 1794), gas motor engine (otto), light bulb (edison, glowing filament in a glass globe), neutronic/nuclear reactor (fermi and szilard), penicillin production method (moyer), transistor (shockley), rocket (goddard), skyscraper steel (bessemer), and most importantly, the Lava Lamp (walker, 1971).
Along the way, you will notice how some of the corporate names now popular are based on companies that were created around the inventor and patent, such as rubber vulcanization (goodyear), frozen food (birdseye), door lock (yale, 1844)and corn flakes process (kellogg, 1919). Additional patents include ones for the chia pet (1994), traffic signal (1923), bra, astro turf, kitty litter, adhesive bandage (bandaid, assigned to johnson and johnson in 1958), zipper (1893), velsro (155), prozac, viagra, kevlar, pez dispenser (and how it works), slinky, roller skates , bar codes, and barbed wire, to name just a few.
A really fantastic read. Definitely worth the price!.......2004-05-08
I received my copy of "Patents: Ingenious Inventions" last week and have already flown through it cover to cover. It is just the right mix of intelligent information and humor to keep just about anyone interested. Another great asset is the numerous topics the book covers. My personal favorite was the chapter on genetic engineering, but there are so many I am sure others will have different favorites. I really recommend this book to anyone with an inquisitive mind and a funny bone. Enjoy!

An excellent book for beginners.......1997-12-13
The book covers the fundamentals of flying in an easy to read manner. Reading the book enabled me to unleash the power of my Microsoft Flight Simulator 95. The chapter on instrument navigation does a much better job than the fragmented online help. The final chapter of "Around the World in 80 hours" is guaranteed to give you more than 80 hours of fun. The Appendices contain a lot of pertinent data which makes this book a handy reference as well.
If you only have one book on the subject, this should be it........1997-08-14
This is an absolutely marvelous text on the dynamics of flying the Flight Simulator. Nick Dargahi wrote this book for MSFS version 5.1.
When he writes a sequel for later versions, I will
buy it, even if 80 percent is repetition. The
20 percent will make it worth while.

Authors Bart Farkas and Douglas Kiang are more concerned with making learning Flight Simulator fun than they are with the minutia of real-life aviation. Even so, the game's options for intense realism make it impossible to talk about the simulation with out teaching a bit of the real thing. Farkas and Kiang keep the fun level up with a light-hearted breezy style that encourages playfulness in the virtual cockpit. The book is loaded with useful tips for beginners and experienced players alike--as well as some devilish ideas no pilot would dare try in real life.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......1999-03-05
Without the availability of all the VOR and NDB frequencies shown in the book it is very difficult to fly from one area of the country to another. I use it daily for all my flights. I realize these frequencies are available within the FS 98 program but this is more convenient.
Completely useless book. Don't buy it........1997-08-01
I have the 5.1 Flight Simulator version of this book. That is indeed an interesting and stimulating book. I expected this one to be as interesting the 5.1 version and that was the reason for buying it. The Windows 95 version is a total deception. It offers virtually no interesting information, besides the one you can get browsing Flight Simulator's interface and help system.
Save your money. Avoid the book

Customer Reviews:
Old but still useful.......1997-12-02
Even though this book was written two years ago and Microsoft has since released two versions after the one this book was written for, the book is still quite useful. Taking you from the simple act of taxiing around the airport, to IFR navigation and low visibility landings, the information included in this book is usable with just about any version of MS Flight Simulator. Highly recommended.
This is one of the best book on Flight Simulator........1997-08-15
The book covers many additional information on flight. The two chapters on flight basics and radio navigation are even more comprehensive and clear than the new help in FS95, including some mathematics explanations. The only weakness is missing description on aerobatics and new scenery. But bear in mind, it is written for 5.1 version primarily. Anyway, the information is very usable to new FS pilot. If you want to buy a book for FS 5.1 or even FS95, I strongly advice you to buy this one. No doubt, it is good, much much better than the new edition

Customer Reviews:
Just say No to this book ... .......2007-03-16
If the title was AMATEUR Web Parts, maybe it would be worth something - to an amateur of course :-) First a professional wouldn't publish a search and replace "translation" from a VB code which was never ever even compiled, and amateur might. Then a professional wouldn't write a code for publication in VB in the first place, since he would know that potential reader of his book, being a professional programmer, has zero time to wade through VB-anything and needs working C# code on the spot - and amateur might.
Since Wrox was avoided publishing even a table of contents on Amazon, let alone a chapter etc. let me quote a little example of a completely amateurish thinking/writing : "think of full-fledged Web Parts as custom controls with superpowers" :-) What can a professional do with such "explanation"? Return the book and click on MSDN pages ...
very poor.......2006-09-19
Poorly done, examples are not clear and not completed. Do not buy this book.
The book sucks.......2006-06-13
The book does not flow from creating a project to finishing a project. It is haphazard. The examples from the website suck! None of the examples are complete, especially chapter 12 which is the one I wanted the most.
Poor Writing, Slow Progress, Good Examples.......2006-05-09
The writing is poor and doesn't make the points clearly. This subject is pretty easy so the examples can make up for the poor writing.
Do not buy this book.......2006-03-26
I'm giving one star to balance unfair author's 5 stars. Poorly written, examples have nothing to do with the content of the book. They are full of bugs and some do not work. The author is not an expert in the subject, he just barely figured out how this things work. It is not programmer to programmer, it's a businessman to programmer. I'm taking the books back to bookstore.
