Book Description
A new kind of woman emerged in the teens and twenties, one who believed that "with the right kind of face cream, or mouth wash, and a little aid from the beauticians, she will become a creature whom Dante would have loved and Casanova would have died for."Or so hoped the publishers of glossy magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Harper's Bazaar, who filled their pages with fashionable images of the New Woman and the glamorous Jazz Age society she inhabited. This book profiles a woman who helped to create the New Woman--Gordon Conway. Raye Virginia Allen follows the whole course of Conway's life (1894-1956) from her Dallas upbringing in a wealthy society family through her working years in New York, London, and Paris to her premature retirement and early death at the family estate in Virginia.
Customer Reviews:
A fashionable woman ahead of her time.......2004-01-15
A wonderfully told and illustrated life sketch of the inimitable Gordon Conway, "That Red Head Gal". Conway is a little known, but extremely talented fashion artist and designer from the early 20th century (Worked 1916-1936). Those interested in 1920's fashion and design history should consider including this fine volume in their library today.
An informative and interesting look at a cultural icon........1998-10-26
This is an indepth look into the life and times of a woman who was immensely talented. It is written by an author who obviously takes great pride in her subject and is quite thourough in her presentation of her subject. It would be a fascinating A&E special.

Customer Reviews:
Schneider Drops An Easy Pop Fly.......2006-09-28
To lead off, the author of the book was long-time Cleveland, OH, print media sports reporter/columnist Russell Schneider. When Schneider retired from his post at The Plain Dealer - still a major daily at the time - he wrote a weekly column for a minor weekly newspaper chain and turned his attention to a variety of book projects, including Covering All The Bases.
Boudreau was a legend in Cleveland as an all-star shortstop and player/manager - taking the helm at age 24. The 1948 team - one of the greatest in MLB history - went from world champions to the big screen, starring in a typical sports film at the time, The Kid From Cleveland.
The Hall-of-Famer was also known by millions of Cubs fans for his nearly three decades of work on radio broadcasts on WGN. Boudreau also had a brief stint playing pro basketball in the National Basketball League, the forerunner to the National Basketball Association.
With nearly a lifetime of professional baseball to reflect upon, it is surprising that Schneider focuses so much on Boudreau's statistics rather than drawing out anecdotes to highlight the achievements. Schneider does a good job having Boudreau comment on his controversial loss of collegiate eligibility at the University of Illinois for signing a letter of intent to play for Cleveland upon graduating, but there are really no journalistic high points afterwards.
A series of book signings in northeast Ohio were greatly scaled back due to Boudreau's worsening health problems. Though even more than a decade after the publication, there are still new autographed books available for readers who like to comb through bookstores in northeast Ohio.
For baseball fans who enjoy statistics over ruminations, Covering All The Bases is a hit. But Schneider could have done so much more to make Boudreau's career come to life.
A demi-god tells less than all.......1997-08-26
Few baseball players have had larger numbers of more devoted fans than Lou Boudreau, the great shortstop who played mainly for the Cleveland Indians from the late 1930s through early 1950s. If he had run for President, all of Cleveland would have voted for him. I may be his biggest fan still living. However, this autobiography, written with help from a ghost writer whose prose is no more than serviceable, leaves much to be desired. Boudreau is well aware of his icon status, and seems determined not to spoil it. We come away from this book knowing a lot of dates and statistics about his career as a player and manager, but not knowing enough about the man behind the facade. There are occasional flashes of drama, as when he discusses his dreadful relationship with his stepfather, who tried to ruin his athletic career by accusing him of violating his amateur status while at college. But by and large this is a disappointment. There was more excitement in a single Boudreau backhand stab on the edge of the infield, than in this entire book
Book Description
Focusing on youth cultures that revolve around dance clubs and raves in Great Britain and the U.S., Sarah Thornton highlights the values of authenticity and hipness and explores the complex hierarchies that emerge within the domain of popular culture. She portrays club cultures as "taste cultures" brought together by micro-media like flyers and listings, transformed into self-conscious "subcultures" by such niche media as the music and style press, and sometimes recast as "movements" with the aid of such mass media as tabloid newspaper front pages. She also traces changes in the recording medium from a marginal entertainment in the 50s to the clubs and raves of the 90s.
Drawing on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, Thornton coins the term "subcultural capital" to make sense of distinctions made by "cool" youth, noting particularly their disparagement of the "mainstream" against which they measure their alternative cultural worth. Well supported with case studies, readable, and innovative, Club Cultures will become a key text in cultural and media studies and in the sociology of culture.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent art work.......2007-07-23
I am currently coloring this book and greatly enjoying doing so, however, I think those considering purchasing this coloring book need to be aware it is very detailed.
In order to portray the house completely on each page along with foreground, the drawings are small.
A person needs a very fine-point marker or pen to do the coloring, and unless one likes small, detailed work, or has a great love for historic houses (I LOVE old houses), they might find it tedious.
While I like the book, it is challenging.
Definitely for adults only or possibly teenagers. It would be far too difficult for a young child.
AWESOME!!!.......2007-04-11
I just purchased these Dover COloring Books for my mother and she loves them. The detail is out of this world and the variety of colors you can use are only limited by your inagination. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Good Experience.......2007-05-22
I placed my order and was pleased to see that it was processed in a timely fashion and I recieved my book in the time predicted in the condition described by the merchant.
Has been very helpful. .......2007-03-12
Several years back, probably more than ten, I read one of the "for Dummies" books. It's been so long ago, I don't even remember what the book was about, but I do remember that I was very disappointed in it. For that reason, I've always steered away from this series of books. However recently, I found myself in need of WORD 2003 FOR DUMMIES by Dan Gookin. I have to admit that I have been shocked by just how good this book is.
I'm not a techie person by any means, and that makes me perfect this book. It is written in easy to understand terms and takes otherwise complex issues down to their basic level of simplicity. So far, I have turned to this book maybe half a dozen times and in each case, have mastered the subject with little difficulty.
If you're like me, this may not be a book that you read through, but it is certainly one that you will reference as the need occurs. To that end, I am very satisfied with this book. I have certainly changed my mind about this series of books. I know different people write these books, but my first experience was so disappointing, I judged all of these books by their cover.

Being one of the dummies, I managed to get everything I needed out of the book
Too Simplistic.......2007-01-09
I found this book to be too simple to be useful. It is truly for those who have not used Word, not for those who have some proficiency and are hoping to learn more about all the features of Word 2003. This is the first of the "Dummies" books I have purchased--and it will be the last!
