Average Effort.......2002-04-07
This is a study in an ego taken over. I view is that the games he played could almost be criminal. I would have liked more information for the company as the author does seem to set out to make Frank be the bad guy. I would also have liked more details on the business end of the airline industry. I thought the writing was above average, he moved the story along through some topics that could be considered dull, union negotiations etc. All and all not a bad book and if you find the airline industry interesting then you should read this book.

Excellent book, well researched and very well written. Accurately portrays the events that lead to Eastern's demise. I am no fan of unions. But, Lorenzo displayed a blatant calloused disregard for Eastern, it's people, and everything connected with it.
Another Labor Bashing of Frank Lorenzo.......2000-06-01
One of the most unfair treatments of the demise of Eastern Airlines ever written and the second worst book on the subject. Biased towards labor from the beginning, Bernstein paints Goya-like pictures of an evil Frank Lorenzo and his henchmen cackling over a cauldron late at night, thinking up ways to lie, cheat and steal Eastern away from the hearths of America. At the same time, Charlie Bryan is portrayed as some mythic hero who ". . .read Ghandi and Kahlil Gibran and even Sun-tzu. . .". Right. Bias shows in the fact that no Texas Air management are quoted; no personal attributes are ever given, making Lorenzo, Bakes et all appear as soulless corporate thugs, while the stalwart union defenders with defiant chins thrust forth, are given warm wonderful hearts and the purest of intentions. I'm surprised Bernstein didn't have pictures of Bryan petting a puppy and holding a baby. Of slight redeming value is the fact that the book does tell an accurate story. Eastern didn't have to die and maybe Lorenzo didn't have to kill it, but the interpretation and presentation are designed only to support an intransigent group of labor leaders in their refusal to see the reality of the world. This book is only marginally better than the worst book written about Eastern, "Freefall".
Good Review but ends to early.......1999-07-10
Overall this book gives an sufficent explantian on the events that led up to Eastern's Shutdown. However, it is bias toward the unions without exposing there arrogance. If you ignore this fact and simply rely on the facts given this is a fairly good book. And also, it ends before the shutdown of the company in January 1991. It does not show the final stage of the Eastern Airlines saga between where Frank Lorenzo loses power and the company shutsdown. 3 stars.
Bewildering and Suspenseful.......1999-06-25
I read the original publication in the early 90's. This book reads well and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The story is bewildering and illustrates a classic "old world" perspective of labor/management relations clashing with the modern realities of a deregulated airline market that would no longer tolerate labor friction.

Very Interesting on How To Make A Movie!.......2004-09-07
No, I've only read this script/commentary, not seen the movie. Mr. Auster's otherworldly script may not be completely original, but still has its stunning and bizarre moments, two of his trademarks. Perhaps most interesting are the interviews at the end of the book, where making and producing this movie are described. The whole effort seems to be one of great cooperation among just about all participants. If you're a striving screenwriter or movie director, you can do a lot worse than reading this book a few times!

I love the film. Now I can "take" the film with me
anywhere I want with this screenplay. I cherish
every word. I also love the fact that some of the
edited scenes are in the dialogue too. I just wish
the pictures could be in color. Other than that,
a must for any FAN of the film! "You can't live if

In a word, it truly stinks. The "twist" ending would be just passable in a student film; here, from the author of The New York Trilogy, it's a colossal embarassment. When Willem Defoe went into "Singin' in the Rain," I almost hid under the sofa. Ouch.

Paul Auster is an exceptional writer and capable of great work-- for example, all of LEVIATHAN, MOON PALACE, and THE MUSIC OF CHANCEare excellent novels. TIMBUKTU, his latest, has plenty to recommend it as well.
But he's also capable of producing dreck (for instance, his close-to-unreadable novel MR. VERTIGO), and this script is in the dreck category.
Has the man never read "An Incident At Owl Creek Bridge"? Well, Ambrose Bierce used the gag at the core of this film many, many years before Auster did. Borges used it, too. That by itself is fine -- the fact that Homer wrote about war doesn't mean no one else should ever again -- but seems to think his gag is clever, orginal, and not telegraphed, when nothing could be further from the truth. (Frankly, the only reason I was in suspense until the end was that I couldn't believe that Auster would [re-]use such an obvious gag.)
LULU ON THE BRIDGE is crap. Pretentious writing, familiar ideas. Don't be suckered.

I have not been able yo watch Lulu on the Bridge at the cinema because of an unlucky timing, but being an 'Austerian', I did not hesitate buying the screenplay out of curiosity and perhaps fanaticism. However, I still kept some distance in order to analyze properly the story itself. Despite all that, I have fallen another time under the charm of the story and the characters. As usual, the reader (and probaly the spectator)is sent in a world in which he (she) thinks he (she) has got the key of the mystery and finally has not. Things are never as simple as they seem to be. Paul Auster plays sometimes some tricks which he explains from time to time in order to dumbfound the reader(cf the French pun on 'Celia') but he mainly performs a magic show in which Izzy the ex-musician and Celia the actress/waitress are two engaging characters. The story is beautiful, clever, full of humanism and other symbols recurring in Auster's works (the dark room, the stone,the wall, the double,...)that one does not need to know to appreciate the story. Then, open your book, listen to the music, let the story unfold under your eyes and perhaps you will feel 'More...connected.'

Internet collaboration makes for better puzzles.......2003-09-02
Most crossword puzzles are the creation of a single person, and like all of us that person has strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, when a puzzle is created by a team, it is a near certainty that the quality of the puzzle will be higher. The seventy one crossword puzzles in this collection were developed by the CrossSynergy syndicate, a group of top puzzle constructors who create puzzles for the Internet. When a puzzle is created, it is passed through a peer review process, which invariably improves it.
Additional parameters of these puzzles are that they are "designed" to be completed in thirty minutes and each has a theme for the larger words. In tackling these puzzles, I found that thirty minutes was not enough time for me, generally because I got stuck on the last ten or so words. The theme was occasionally helpful, although in most cases I either got the word from the clue only or found that I was stuck, even when thinking along the lines of the theme.
Collaboration in any profession always improves the product and you can see it in these puzzles. They are challenging, yet doable, and I found myself unwittingly competing with myself trying to finish them in the advertised thirty minutes.

This is a good book for someone new to SPS or for someone creating content. It is not a technical administrator guide. I would have given it 5 stars if they had spent some more time on the architecture overview and provided any coverage on the integration with pre-2007 Office.
