Book Description
As CEO of General Electric for the past twenty years, Jack Welch built its market cap by more than $450 billion and established himself as the most admired business leader in the world. His championing of initiatives like Six Sigma quality, globalization, and e-business have helped define the modern corporation. At the same time, he's a gutsy boss who has forged a unique philosophy and an operating system that relies on a "boundaryless" sharing of ideas, an intense focus on people, and an informal, give-and-take style that makes bureaucracy the enemy. In anecdotal detail and with self-effacing humor, Jack Welch shares the big hits and misses that characterized his career.

Baseballs best tales from the ballpark .......2006-02-11
This book is about a bunch of stories of famous baseball players. Most of the players in this book tell about there memories during their careers, and how they felt about their memories. It also goes over what they did in their career. This book contains a lot of stories about a bunch of different people, but most of the stories are short. There was one story in the book where they talk about baseball players that are on very rare trade cards and how much they cost, it also had where to buy them at back when they first came out. This book doesn't just talk about trading cards it also talks about the players problems that they had during their season.
In this book I liked the fact that there was a whole bunch of stories and not just one story concerning on one idea. I like this idea because some stories that I choose to read are very boring and it is hard for me to find a book with a story I like. I didn't like that there were stories that were starting to get a little bit longer then usual because I couldn't keep my mind focused on it and still remember what I was reading. I did like it when other players played antics on rookies because they did some very funny antics. I didn't like it when the narrator would criticize the players because the baseball players worked at this sport very hard to get where they are at now.
I am giving this book three stars because it was very funny and it kept me reading, it didn't bore me like most books do. If you are a die hard baseball fan that likes learning about baseball players or just don't know much about the players and want to learn more about them then I would definitely recommend this book to you. Especially if you liked Tales from the Dugout then you should like this book also. That's it I hope you read this book it is a great book.
Simply put - a fun book!.......2001-07-03
TALES FROM THE BALLPARK is a quick read that contains poignant, funny, sad, and informative stories. All of the tales are short (one or two pages) and cover a wide range of subjects - stories about fans, the minors, umpires, old players and modern players.
If you are looking for an in depth book about baseball, this one isn't for you. But if you just want to be entertained for an evening, I would heartily recommend this book.
Very entertaining!.......2000-07-13
This book is very entertaining from start to finish. It's hard to put the book down once you start because the stories in it keep you glued to the book. The first book was great also. I just hope that Mike Shannon has a third installment in the works. There are a few glaring mistakes in the book that I must point out. Shannon refers to current Arizona 1st baseman Greg Colbrunn as "Colburn" and he states that Barry Bonds broke into the majors with the Pirates in '89 wearing number 24 when he actually entered in '86 wearing number 7, since Denny Gonzalez wore 24 back then.
two for two.......2000-05-09
Shannon has done it again. How often do we read baseball anecdote books, only to skip 3/4 of the stories, having already read them elsewhere. Well, it won't happen with Mike Shannon's books! It's clear that solid research has resulted in stories that are always unique and usually hilarious. I loved it, and you will too. Check out Tales From The Dugout, too. you won't be disappointed.
home run.......2000-05-01
Entertaining, well-written book. Vignettes range from poignant to the hilarious. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a passion for baseball and who can appreciate the author's mature and restrained style. A home run in my book.

Book Description
A complete, fluently-written overview of author Graham Greene's long association with the film world, covering the many cinematic adaptations of his novels and his roles as screen writer and film critic.
Book Description
Low-income housing programs and lesser-known initiatives have harmed those they were meant to help while causing grave collateral damage, Mr. Husock argues. He emphasizes the deep but unappreciated importance to American society of economically diverse urban neighborhoods, and he demonstrates the historic and continuing importance of privately built affordable housing.
Customer Reviews:
Food For Thought.......2006-08-10
Don't be swayed by ideologues who likely haven't read the book.
Husock does a fantastic job of deconstructing the various policies and programs that have contributed to our current state of affairs with housing issues in the United States. Not content to just stay within the realm of government/taxpayer sponsored housing initiatives: the author proceeds to analyze programs like Habitat for Humanity. He views Habitat as a wonderful catalyst to get aspiring homeowners to invest in their home and their community with a sense of ownership, versus a handout that leaves no sense of place. But, this is just one example, the book gives you many more.
If one did actually read this with an open-mind, not likely for some, you would take away different perspectives on what is good/bad about various programs, and how resources could be shifted to meet housing needs in the most economic and managebale manner.

America's Trillion Dollar Housing Mistake: The Failure of American Housing Policy
by Howard Husock (Ivan R. Dee, Inc., November 2003)
Housing policy in the U.S. is an issue within the urban planning, development and design professions (and beyond) that is as tough, as it is sensitive, as it is variegated, as it is unresolved. And arguably many of us, united in acknowledging some of its past mistakes, are divided by its future course. America's Trillion Dollar Housing Mistake is a collection of essays written from 1995-2003 on everything that Howard Husock, director of public policy case studies at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, thinks is wrong with U.S. housing policy. It is an unforgiving look at the history of 'failed' housing programs in the U.S., with such provocative chapter titles as "Don't Let CDC's Fool You" and "We Don't Need Subsidized Housing." Husock dedicates nearly all of his book to trying to discredit policies such as the Community Reinvestment Act, the Low Income Housing Tax Credit, Section 8, public housing in its many forms, and subsidized non-profit housing development. He also offers some solutions, including a "compassionate conservative housing policy," which would gradually dismantle public housing and subsidy programs. He also highlights what he thinks are successful models, such as time-limited public housing in Charlotte, NC, and Habitat for Humanity.
The experience of reading Howard Husock's essays is interactive. Along the way, you may find yourself yelling out counter-arguments, or giving Husock a mental high-five. And depending on which chapter it is and what your position is on solving the seemingly insurmountable housing problems in this country, you may even find that you do both. Whether you agree with Howard Husock or not, America's Trillion Dollar Housing Mistake keeps you on your toes and holds you accountable for your opinions, whatever they may be, on housing policy in the U.S.

****right-wing alert*****.......2004-12-30
I went into this book with a completely open mind hoping to be enlightened. I certainly agree with the assertion that the title makes, and so I was looking forward to hearing Husock's analysis. What a waste of time. I didn't find a lot of original ideas here, or clear thoughts, just your basic John Birch Society argument against "big government."
Sowell recommends.......2004-02-07
Haven't read it yet, but on Thomas Sowell's recommendation, I will.

Customer Reviews:
Can't Wait To Use This With The Grandkids.......2004-09-20
What a great idea, a book on backyard games! I wish we'd had this when our sons were growing up. But with one of them getting married next year, we're collecting material for a day (we hope isn't too far off) when we get to be the doting grandparents. In the meantime, our friends with children still in the nest are raving about it. It makes us a big hit at picnics and with the grown-ups, too.
Great Ideas.......2000-09-21
THis book is full of wonderful ideas for moms and educators. My daughter and her friends get bored sometimes and this had games in it that I had never played before, along with ones I recognized. The kids can play together for hours without arguing and whining about being bored. As an educator this makes a great book to have especially when you have new teachers or substitute teachers. It gives them great ideas, lets the children develop physical, intellectual, and social skills, and allows the teacher to learn right along with the children. It can even break the ice for the not so assertive teachers or first day jitters. This is a wonderful book and worth the money.
Book Description
The market for credit derivatives--financial instruments designed to transfer credit risk from one party to another--has grown exponentially in recent years, with volume expected to reach more than $4.8 trillion by 2004. With demand increasing from the private sector for finance professionals trained in the opportunities - and dangers - inherent in this fast-changing market, finance courses are already springing up to meet this need.Credit Derivatives is the first student-oriented text to explain this field to business students with a background in finance. Real-world examples are cited throughout, reinforced by end-of-chapter questions, and students can take advantage of links to pricing models on the internet. This concise book is ideal for instructors seeking to supplement traditional derivatives course material, as well as those looking to enhance their own understanding of this fast-growing area.
Customer Reviews:
I love this book.......2006-06-09
As a beginner for credit derivatives, I like this book so much! It gives a very clear introduction for credit derivatives.
Nice read!.......2006-04-26
This book explains the difficult field of credit derivatives
with ease and grace. Haven't found a so easy read.
Liked mostly the applicaton chapter 4. The pricing chapter 5 is also easy to follow. The Merton extensions could have used more meat (too much math).
waste of money.......2006-03-05
this book does not teach you anything beyond the very basics, and advertised web-based modelling support was something anyone can create in few minutes.
I was fooled by positive ratings as so often is the problem in Amazon. This book only to enhance author's nice lifestyle in Honolulu.
Finally...a book even I can understand!.......2005-02-25
Nice piece of work. Very informative. Highlight is chapter 4 with tons (almost too much) of practical credit derivatives applications. The pricing chapter 5 starts well with explaining structural and reduced form models in a straightforward, simple way, but the first time passage models could have used more discussion. Risk management chapter 6, which also covers the impact of credit derivatives on OP risk, should be helpful for practitioners. The free pricing models on the Internet, especially the trinomial Hull-White and LMM model, are valuable from an educational and practical point of view.
Suited for MBA level.......2005-02-20
The book is an easy read on credit risk and credit derivatives. It is more informative than the Tavakoli or Nelken book and less theoretical than Schoenbucher or Duffie/Singleton. The many examples and problems, and the pricing models provided on the Internet make this book an excellent choice for an MBA program.
