Book Description
Remember that success requires half luck and half brains Kemmons Wilson likes to say. It is one of his 20 Tips of Success the rules by which he made it big. In his autobiography Wilson illustrates those 20 Tips through the various episodes that shaped his incredible life story. Wilson offered the public a brand name it could trust in roadside lodging as big green-and-yellow Holiday Inn signs lit up skylines from Texarkana to Tahiti from Hong Kong to Casablanca. Wilson goes far beyond the epic of the most successful hotel chain in history. For the first time Wilson recounts his entire larger-than-life rags-to-riches story.

What Hershey Did For Chocolate.......2005-06-01
After spending seven nights in a Holiday Inn, I picked up a copy of this book in the hotel gift shop, where it was on sale for 79 cents. I wound up going back to the desk clerk and asking if I could extend my stay. Kemmons Wilson, the man who invented the idea of the "Holiday Inn" (or at any rate bought the rights from famed songwriter Irving Berlin), has written a book which rivals THE EDUCATION OF HENRY ADAMS for sheer insight and business acumen. Why are we drawn to the combination of green and yellow that makes up the HOLIDAY INN logo? You'll never guess! But that duotone color flash, with its "Vacancy" sign blinking underneath, lures travellers in the way flypaper lures a fly.
He was a wealthy man even before he coined the phrase (I mean leased it), "Holiday Inn," and making a lot of money hasn't changed his basic character. If people teased him about being called, "Kemmons," he did not take it personally but stored up the energy he might have devoted to getting even, and turned it around into a way to get rich. Okay, so the Holiday Inn isn't the Trump Plaza, still, it's a way for the ordinary person to experience a little bit of the comfort of home when they're out on the road or just looking to get lucky. Kemmons Wilson knows all these facts and lays them out in his now-famous "Twenty Tips" to prosperity.
Never underestimate the other fellow's taste. If you had thought of the green and yellow sign you too might be raking in the chips and clipping your coupons. He made it onto the cover of TIME magazine in 1972. What Milton Hershey did for chocolate, I think you will find, Kemmons did for the motel business. Thought of the customers first. Selling his life story is just part II. They were going like hot cakes in the revolving rack in the gift shop, the two clerks could barely keep them on the shelf. Well, 79 cents is quite a bargain even if the book was bad.
I can not put this book down.......2003-02-18
Excellent Read! This book starts with 20 tips for success. Kemmons' sucess examplifies those tips. He is so hardworking, never afraid of making mistakes. As he said, everyone makes mistakes only a fool makes the same mistakes twice but he himself made same mistakes twice. Even mistake pays.
He did not become rich in one night as those in the internet bubble. He was already a millionaire before the Hiliday Inn. Even after he retired from Holiday Inn, he was still creating enterprises.
Makes me want to act on my ideas.
You too can do anything you desire!.......2000-02-11
Excellent read! I enjoy good business bios, and this ranks up there with the best of them. After you read this book you'll know what the word persistance means!
EXCELLENT autobiography and business tome to boot!.......1999-05-02
This book not only chronicles the life of Kemmons, but expands upon the ideology behind the business of Holiday Inn and other ventures. Not only an enjoyable read, but an EXCELLENT guide for an entrepreneur such as myself. Exceptional in EVERY respect!

Interesting and insightful information from an insider.......2004-02-08
So you think a team trainer simply wraps ankles and takes care of injuries? Read this book and you will find that he does much more. The Packer Tapes: My 32 Years With the Green Bay Packers by Dominic Gentile informs the reader that he can also play the part of a sounding board to players and coaches alike, be a personal advisor, and even making personnel suggestions to the coaching staff.
The Packer Tapes contains interesting tidbits from someone who was as close to being a part of the team as could possibly be, but actually wasn't.
Hired by the legendary coach, Vince Lombardi, and employed by the Packers through Mike Holmgren's first season, Gentile, who obviously was also a diehard Packer fan besides being the team trainer, offers his opinion of both of those coaches as well as those who were sandwiched in between. He also sheds insight about many of the players that he worked with through those years and dispells some myths about a few of the players and the team.
For instance, many Packer fans probably thought that Sterling Sharpe was an introverted individual because he didn't speak to the local press. Gentile reveals that Sharpe was actually very vocal, outgoing, and even a prankster in the locker room. Another bit of Sharpe information disclosed was that he played with injuries and pain much of the time and still was able to perform at a top-notch level.
Reading this book approximately nine years after it was published (the book was published after the 1994 season; this reviewer read the book and wrote this review in February, 2004) provided - maybe inadvertently - some interesting and amazingly accurate observations. It almost appeared that Gentile could see into the future. For instance, his take on Brett Favre: He hoped that the Packers would stick with Favre because he thought that he was "something special." Favre went on to win three MVPs and has led the Packers to the Super Bowl.
On Mike Holmgren: Dom always felt that the Packers' head coaches after Lombardi -and until Holmgren - worked the players too hard in training camp and practice, leaving them with a low energy level for the games. He felt that Holmgren would have success that the preceding coaches couldn't achieve. Holmgren went on to win a Super Bowl with the Packers.
It's obvious that Gentile was very observant and a good judge of character.
In a nutshell: The Packer Tapes is an easy read, insightful, with viewpoints and stories from someone with the inside scoop, who probably knew the coaches and especially the players better than anyone. I don't know if non-Packer fans would like the book - they might. But Packer backers are sure to enjoy it.
Book Description
Teenage girls seem to have been discovered by American pop culture in the 1930s. From that time until the present day, they have appeared in books and films, comics and television, as the embodied fantasies and nightmares of youth, women, and sexual maturation.
Looking at such figures as Nancy Drew, Judy Graves, Corliss Archer, Gidget, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Britney Spears, American Sweethearts shows how popular culture has shaped our view of the adolescent girl as an individual who is simultaneously sexualized and infantilized. While young women have received some positive lessons from these cultural icons, the overwhelming message conveyed by the characters and stories they inhabit stresses the dominance of the father and the teenage girl's otherness, subordination, and ineptitude.
As sweet as a cherry lollipop and as tangy as a Sweetart, this book is an entertaining yet thoughtful exploration of the image of the American girl.

There are plenty stereotypes of 'stupid teen girls' and AMERICAN SWEETHEARTS gets to the bottom of these images by exploring them in American pop culture through teen narratives and the producers who created them. Chapters begin the study in 1930 and conclude in 1965, with each survey how social and cultural changes contributed to the evolving image of girls, from Nancy Drew to Gidget. American History, Popular Culture, and Women's Studies collections will be enriched by this survey.

Spirit 1 Karen.......2005-12-15
This deck is subtle and inspirational.
I love the art . It is worth having for gazing at the drawings alone.
Sasha has a way of conveying simple , yet powerful messages to contemplate and incorporate into one's daily life .
The messages are centering and focus on our relationship with all beings.
sweet and insightful.......2005-10-06
I just love using these cards. The beautiful artwork of the faeries is magical and inspiring. I've used many different sets of cards for divination and this set is has a very gentle and loving way of delivering the message that is meant for me to hear. I have found that the short inpirational message given in the booklet for each card, is simple for me to read and understand, but also delivers a much deeper heartfelt message which inspires me on a more emotional/spiritual level. The message is always kind and soft, and yet effectively directs me into action for my highest good. I would recomend this deck for anyone with a connection to nature and is ready to grow and understand their life in a clear and beautiful way

How I Passed.......2007-02-01
That should be 5 stars... Having zero financial background, I researched all the book reviews and decided to go with the book and CDrom available directly from Kaplan (purchased Dearborn). They sell their newest, second edition direct from their website as a bundle with the CDrom. I also used a book and audio CD set from "Pass The 7" (Robert Walker). I read each section from both books, then used the practice exams on Kaplan's CDrom to identify areas of weakness, and went back to re-read those topics. I listened to the audio CD's in the car constantly. I did full-length, 250 question practice exams each day for 10 days and went back to re-read areas of weakness. I studied part-time (about 2 hours a day on average) for 3 months (I have a busy life and a family) and ended up getting an 86% on the real thing in a little under 4 hours. I felt well-prepared doing it the way I did. 66% of test-takers passed in 2006 with an average score of 73%. I didn't do too badly :)
Just took the test.......2004-10-26
I have little financial background and needed to pass the test in about a month. Here is what I did with this book, the only book I have ever used.
1) read the book one time. Do all the chapter tests. Understand them as best you can. Read all of the material once.
I suggest 30-50 pages a night depending on what subject. Unfortunately the first few sections are a grind (Munis and Options are included) and take longer - make sure to read these to understanding.
Pay attentin to all "test topic" alerts in the book.
2) Buy the CD and take tests. Lots of tests. Lots and lots of tests. Take full section tests ( I took them in increments of 50 and 100) until you are getting 80% of them correct.
At the end of each section of the book - take multiple tests on that section on the CD immediately afterwards. AS you read more and more sections - combine more and more subjects into the tests you take along with taking some that are subject specific.
Take tests that include all of the subjects too - then find what sections and sub-sections you are scoring poorly on and take tests upon test of just those subjects until you know them.
The CD is a must. You HAVE to have it. I probably took 150 tests ranging from full 125 all subject practice tests (that are JUST like the real thing as far as form and questions) to 50 question tests focusing on subjects I was scoring poorly on.
1) study the book and do the tests in the book
2) get the CD and go to town like a madman. Take tests until you cant take any more tests. You cannot take too many.
I got 87 first try and finished the first 3 hour session in 50 minutes and the second 3 hour section in 1 hour and 15 minutes. Took under 2 hours total. About 30% of the questions were EXACT - the others similiar.
My only complaint is that the section on Order Entry/Confirmation/and Settlement sections. I was in the 60% range on the test for that section and was LOST during the test on q's regarding those subjects.
You can pass the test with a month, this book and the dearborn CD.
good luck
Here's how you pass the Series 7 Exam.......2004-06-27
Honestly, all the books out there (including this one) for the Series 7 exam are thick and filled with too much information. If you actually try to read the book from front to back, you are doing yourself a disservice. It is way too much information to retain. By the time you complete reading the book, you would have forgotten everything in the beginning.
My advice: Skip reading the book and jump straight into doing the practice exams. Read the questions and compare it to the answer. Only use the book as a reference. Do the practice exams over and over until you have a passing score of 80%+.
The book is actually pretty good if you insist on reading it. They explain the difficult concepts pretty well with the use of visual aids and Hotsheet summary.
Good luck! Get plenty of rest the night before. The test is long and draining!
Comprehensive Review to Pass Test.......2004-05-08
This is an excellent book. I recommend completing the book in 25 days ~30 pages per day. Get the CD and do multiple 100+ questions test. Also, the audio CDs are excellent.
Score: 92%
If you can get through the book it is ok.......2004-03-09
As one other reader mentioned, there are some mistakes which are a bit fustrating. My advice if you are going to get this book is to leave yourself plenty of time to take some online tests as well. I don't think it's manageable to go through this book as well as another one, but be advised that there are some items on the test that I didn't see in the book (i.e. money laundering). Study time (4 weeks + online tests). Score: 84.

Fully interactive, user-friendly, learner-oriented. .......2004-08-29
I bought the book thinking that it would merely be instructing in an traditional ways. However, I was totally wrong.
It comes with so many helpful features:
1. Test Topic Alert! --- This makes sure that you understand the most tested concepts and reminds you to pay more attention to certain topics.
2. Take Notes --- it provides more details and explanations on difficult concepts. It clears up common misunderstandings.
3. Example ---- Very detailed, helpful examples that contributes to good interpretion.
4. Quiz ---- they are not that easy, although they may sound like they are. Quizes enforces the reader to understand certain concepts before he/she goes on to next topic. All comes with answer and rationale, which is extremely helpful.
5. Lesson Exams --- Chapter test. Gives you a general idea how you did in that lesson.
6. Hot Sheet (Most creative and important feature!) --- it actually helps you to focus and literally have notes ready for each lesson. It is especially helpful during final review.
Happy reading. It's a must read if you are serious about taking the "series 7", a long 6-hour exam.
dearborn the best.......2004-06-23
Took my series 7 exam today (6/21/04)( 84%). I read Barrons, Arco and Dearborn.
Dearborn was clearly the best hands down. They had great studying tips, easy to read format, you CAN pass the test with this book alone. Just cover everything, answer every practice question, use the disc and there will be no surprises. Arco was OK, but compared to Dearborn it doesn't hold a candle. I was initially a bit worried because I had the 12th edition ( 3 yrs. old) but it didn't matter. Good luck to all...
GOOD ENOUGH TO PASS!!!!!.......2003-12-08
Dearborn is an outstanding company who writes superior material so you can pass the test you need. Myself failed this exam 3 times using Bisys Education material. I switched to Dearborn to study for my series 6, 63 and here just recently my 7 exam again. I passed each one the very first time using thier study books and cd roms. I passed the Series 7 with a 78% didn't even feel like I had any worries about failing when I turned in my exam. Passed no problem. I deffinatley reccomend this book to anybody wanting to pass the series 7 the first time through. Read the book once, pay attention, have it on hand for refreshers, and just pound the CD-ROM Drills hard everyday do at least two of them every single day. If you pound them consistently and wear yourself out on them you will have no problem passing. Good Luck and USE THIS BOOK TO PASS!!!!
Our firm uses this book exclusively.......2003-11-05
We are a broker-dealer (equities + derivatives + stock futures) and have found that, for our new employees, in comparison to all of the other Series 7 test prep books, this is the best...and by a very large margin. If you only bought one book, then this is it. None of the others even come close.
If you don't have the cash to take a "crash course" you can pass the exam with only this book. BUT...you really have to throughly study the chapters, and then honestly take all of the paper and CD based tests and then review all of your mistakes and research why they are mistakes and then continue to do so until you consistently get scores in the 80's then you will pass the Series 7 Exam.
Since, according to law, if you are required to take the "Series 7" then you are usually required to take the "Series 63" (State law) exam, we strongly recommend this publisher's companion book, the "Series 63 Exam" book. Yes, that book "blows away" its competition also.
Please refer to our review on this publisher's "Series 24" exam, not so much that you will immediately need to take the higher level, "Series 24" exam, but for the description about securities industry licensing and registration, as you WILL NEED your employing firm to sponsor you, in order to be allowed to take this exam.
Thus if you are un-employed, you cannot take this exam on your own inititiave, even if you think it is your ticket into the securites industry...so don't waste the money for this book and its companion book (Series 63) unless you are actually employed by a securites firm and they are willing to fill out all of the forms and to sponsor and approve of your taking of this exam.
Another thing.....don't even spend the money for this book, if you have ever been charged (note that the threshold is charged with , not convicted or dismissed) with any crime that in any way relates to money in the last ten years, since there is a very good chance that you will be barred from the securites industry (Federal Law), so take the time to check with your employer and the Federal "U-4" form that they have on you.

I don't think you will find better!.......2003-10-07
This is a very comprehensive and excellent manual. I read this book once, took the class, then spent a month doing the practice tests and practice finals. On the last two practice finals I got 86% on each. Today, I took the 7 and passed with an 84%. I found the questions on the CD ROM (which comes with the book) almost indentical to the actual exam, and even more difficult than the exam. If you read the book once, take the class, then keep doing practice tests and practice finals, over and over, scoring at least 80%, you will pass the Series 7 easily. There were absolutely no surprises on the test today, and there were only 2 or 3 questions that I wasn't fimiliar with. This is great material. Great! I am very pleased and will use Dearborn for the Series 66.
